Beryl Madison answers her summons to teacher Terry Goodson's second-grade classroom to defend her nephew's "odd behavior" like an avenging angel. It seems poor little Duncan "is having some type of fantasy ideation"--he's been telling some of his classmates that his aunt is a superhero.
When Beryl shows up in a yellow catsuit with orange flames, a mardi gras mask, and red stiletto boots, Terry thinks he's the one having the fantasy ideation now. Come to find out, Beryl is merely in her work clothes. One of her jobs is playing "The Flame" for a local television station's morning children's show.
The next day Terry goes to the Internal Revenue Service for an audit of his personal income tax return and learns all about Beryl's other job. While auditing the return, Beryl suspects that the attorney who handled Terry's late uncle's estate has swindled several clients.
As they work together to bring justice to those swindled by the seedy attorney, they learn that the spontaneous combustion each sets off in the other is more than a physical attraction. Could this once-in-a-lifetime explosion be the love they both want? Or will they wind up blowing their relationship to smithereens?
Gayle is a Southwest Virginia based author who is working on the Daphne Martin Cake Decorating Mystery series. The first book in the series, MURDER TAKES THE CAKE tells the story of Daphne Martin, a forty-year-old divorcee who returns to her fictional hometown of Brea Ridge, Virginia to start her life over. She has left behind an ex-husband who is in prison for an attempt on Daphne's life, a dingy apartment and a stale career. She has started fresh in a new home with a new career, Daphne's Delectable Cakes, a cake-decorating company Daphne runs out of her home. She is thrilled to be living closer to her beloved niece and nephew, although being close to other family members brings up lifelong resentments and more than a couple complications. Daphne is also reunited with childhood friend, Ben Jacobs, a full-fledged HAG (hot, available guy). Daphne's business hits a snag when her first client turns up dead."

"The Flame never backed down from a challenge. Wherever there is a wrong to be righted, an injustice to be overcome, an oppression to be liberated, an egg to be fried, or a burger to be grilled, The Flame will be there. She alone can scorch evil, char cruelty, sear tyranny, ignite fear in the hearts of even the coldest of criminals…and burn even Minute Rice ®.
Beryl Madison has an awful lot on her plate. She's guardian to her two small nephews after an accident that claimed their parents. Her Mom and Dad are dealing with long term illness. Her job at the IRS is difficult. And, she gets to "play" The Flame in a local children's show done on a shoestring budget at the TV station.
Hey, who would turn down being a superhero? We've all thought of it at one time or another haven't we? The Flame probably lights the fire (TMI) of a lot of people within the area. And when Beryl arrives at school to meet with her nephew's teacher, she begins to feel her own fire light.
Told in a format reminiscent at times of an old TV show, the story of Beryl and her family will light your imagination and warm your heart. Gayle Trent writes wonderful stories that stay with you after they have ended. Highly recommended.
The Flame by Gayle Trent is a warm book, funny at times, loving and protective of the young nephews fate has given her to raise, and even romantic at times. It is a book that put a smile on my face and allowed me to relax when I read it. It is not a tense and stressful book in spite of a mystery that needs solving along the way. Yes there is some danger, but I felt that generally the loving and protective nature of the characters over-ruled any tensions. (Ok MOST tensions-there were moments...) I confess I never put much thought into the possibility of having to raise someone else's children or the sacrifices involved. However, after reading this book, I have a lot more respect for people who are in this position! Ms Trent writes in a thoughtful style, balancing reality with dreams and wishes. If you want a book that will make you feel good and stay happily in your mind after reading it, then this book is for you! I give it 5 stars. It is totally different from other books by this author. Give it a try, you will be glad you did!
