Having loved this author’s previous novel, No Kiss Goodbye, and falling in love with the front cover for this book, I was very excited to read it, but at the same time a little nervous. I’m pleased to say that See Me Not is yet another at times somewhat tense and cleverly plotted psychological thriller that will keep you awake late at night, as you read just one more page, and another, and another…
I highly recommend this to fans of psychological thrillers.
This book had me changing my mind about the three main characters throughout. Initially, I wasn’t sure if I liked Emma. She seemed quite needy, and getting so annoyed at her husband, David for having to work long hours, had me feeling sorry for him. Being a military wife myself, a part of me wanted to shake sense into her and tell her how lucky she was to see her husband most days, even if it was only briefly. I desperately wanted her to give him more support. As for the third main character, Amber, David’s boss, she had me really intrigued. I do love a good manipulative character in a book, so I found her fascinating throughout.
This thrilling and emotional novel covers a number of sensitive subjects, but all are approached with care. This story felt very current with it also covering online stalking, and did actually have me checking through my own Facebook friends list.
See Me Not is a story of secrets, loneliness, rejection and guilt, and even had me crying at the end. Oh my, what an intense ending that was! I highly recommend reading the author’s message at the end of the novel too, as I think it is important to understand part of the heart breaking inspiration for this novel. Grab a tissue first though.
Told in multiple POV, 1st person, it can be read as a standalone. This was my first read by this author and unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as I expected it to be. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. They weren’t likable, especially Emma. The story dragged at some places and I skimmed toward the end. The twist didn’t wow me. Overall, it didn’t live up to my expectations but hope you enjoy it more than me!
See Me Not is a story told in the first person in alternating chapters by Emma, David and Amber.
Emma is quite a complex character. Even though she has what she wants in life, she is still a very troubled soul. Her life is about to get even more troublesome and it has her loved ones fearing for her sanity.
David, is Emma’s husband. There is no doubt how much he loves his wife. It certainly can’t be easy for him living with Emma as he constantly worries about her state of mind. He is such a lovely person though and is very much her rock.
Amber, I couldn’t work out to start with. I didn’t know where she fitted into it all and why she seemed hell bent on destroying Emma and David’s marriage. As the story goes on she becomes even more unlikable and I was truly dying to know why she was doing what she was.
See Me Not is a truly gripping read that I couldn’t put down. I was desperate for answers and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I loved the little twists and turns that the story took and it kept me guessing through out. A truly captivating story that by the end, had me feeling a mixture of emotions that I hadn’t expected to feel. Will certainly be reading more books by this author.
My thanks to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
This book started off quite well but the characters weren't likeable. Emma was a needy, self-centred woman. David was a weak, ineffectual man and Amber was just unbelievable. However, I suppose they had to be like this to fit the plot.
It gradually deteriorated into a rambling tale (why use one word when twenty will do). The story was absolutely unbelievable and didn't even rely on coincidence to make sense. Not wanting to give anything away , but random events just happened without any reason.
I got so bored about seventy percent of the way through, I skipped to the last two percent and it ended exactly as I thought it would. Nothing gripping about this book at all.
The final straw for me was the awful American words used. My bad, mom, gotten etc in Southern Ireland? I don't think so.
I realise I am in a minority but this just didn't do anything for me except bore me to tears.
For me this book was just okay. It started out good and then dragged in the middle. The end...I found myself skimming. I think it just may be my opinion of this author. I felt the same way about another book I read by her and everyone loved it and this one as well.
Jeez....I picked this up from my Kindle Unlimited and saw all the 4 and 5 star reviews, I must be way outside the norm here because I thought this book was just awful. Emma was an okay character, but having a sister with bipolar, I felt like so much more could have been done with her character. David was just unlikable, okay we get it, he loves his wife, he's afraid she'll harm herself, but he was a weak, sniveling character all around. Amber was a complete joke, really? I am supposed to believe her storyline? Again anyone who has been exposed to her particular drama doesn't shape up this way in a few years. Believe it or not the characters weren't the worst thing to me, it was the lack of plot development. Something terrible would happen and then the story would just go right on without acknowledging it again. For example, David is accused of sexual harassment at work, HR is on the rampage looking for him. And.....that's it! We never hear about him talking to HR, what if anything happens after that, he just continues to go to work in his boring hum drum way. This describes pretty much every event that happened in the book. Needless to say, I would tell you to save your time, there is no big twist, I saw it coming a mile away and no plot development. What waste of 2 days :(
It took me some time to get into this one. Emma had lost someone she had relied on and whilst struggling to come to terms with that she is assaulted by online nasty messages. She is struggling with a secret she has kept from her husband and feels her life spiralling out of control. I didn't warm to Emma to start with. She seemed somewhat self centred and needy & I felt sorry for David her hardworking husband. However as the story moved on I began to get more sympathetic towards her. David also has a secret but Amber, his boss, is not going to let him keep it. Amber is a real piece of work & even when the circumstances of how she became the way she is, I still couldn't like her!
This was a quick read as I had to find out how it ended. Thanks to the author and THE Book Club for giving me the chance to read it.
After reading the brilliant No Kiss Goodbye by Janelle Harris I was over the moon when she asked me if I would like to read an ARC of her new book. Emmas story had me hooked right from the beginning but I have to admit I flitted back and forth with annoyance and sympathy for her. While struggling with her own demons Emma discovers her confidant and father figure Danny died suddenly. Why would Danny kill himself when he spent so much time convincing Emma to live hers. While grieving the loss of Danny Emma discovers she is being stalked by her husbands work colleague Amber. Why has Amber decided to follow her and what does she want? The story follows Emma and her aim to take back control of her life while trying to save her marriage and keep Amber at bay. Another great read from Janelle who I know wrote this story from experience and straight from the heart which most definitely reflects in her writing
I was absolutely thrilled when I received a message from Janelle asking if I would like to review 'See me not' before its release day on 24th November. Having read Janelles first book 'No Kiss Goodbye' and absolutely loved it, I was beyond excited to read this one.
Well what can I say apart from this book was fantastic, fabulous, unputdownable. It was one of those books where I kept trying to figure out what was happening only to find I was completely barking up the wrong tree ! The characters in the book are strong and well developed, some I liked better than others but all of them came across really well. The message at the end from Janelle herself was heartbreaking and how she found the strength to write this book I really don't know but I admire her deeply for this.
Once again my thanks to Janelle for allowing me to review this superb book which was a definite 5 star read from me.
I loved No Kiss Goodbye by Janelle Harris. It was an amazingly refreshing change for a book to feature such a family drama like no other I had read up until that day. So it was always going to be a difficult act to follow but See Me Not has a pretty good try!
The story is told from the viewpoints of a husband and wife David and Emma and also from Amber, who is David’s workmate. Emma is distraught by the death of her friend Danny, a railway worker who saved her life 14 years previously. The fact that it looks like he has committed suicide seems to affect her badly. She is keeping a secret from her husband but it looks like he is also keeping secrets from her and someone is determined to mess up their lives with their knowledge of those secrets.
Emma was a difficult character to take to initially as I found her rather needy and erratic. But as the book progressed my thoughts started to change and as the plot started to unravel my allegiances also started to switch around. This is quite a twisty character driven psychological suspense and I thought I had worked out where it was going but I didn’t quite have all the threads pulled together. It’s quite an emotional read at times and I could tell the author had put her heart and soul into her storyline.
Whilst I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as No Kiss Goodbye, this was once again a heartbreaking fictional account of how mental health issues affect relationships within families as well as the person themselves. And if I hadn’t been emotional enough at the end, then the authors note definitely finished me off. Be prepared.
Many thanks to the author for my review copy of See Me Not.
Promising start that completely lost the plot (if there ever was one). Emma was clingy, needy and annoying. David was self absorbed and weak. Amber was too ridiculous to be believed. Convoluted and rambling, this story was a mess that still managed to be predictable.
I started this a little warily as I had tried one by her in 2016 and jacked it in as it was a bit fanciful and had a lot of mistakes in. I'd not realised I'd downloaded another in error. However, I thought things may have improved. The storytelling had for sure but the mistakes still did for me at 26%. The proofreader is proudly mentioned at the start and, if I was in her shoes, I'd keep my head down and trap shut, I'm afraid. She does a terrible job. Sorry, Jenny Sims, but take a look at what I happened across and I'm NOT an editor or proofreader. The author keeps writing about so-and-so would text her back, for example. But uses it as people do when they speak so "David still hasn't text me back"....as opposed to texted. She has a habit of writing Just. Like. This which can be effective, but not when it's getting overused as it is here. There are the usual e-book apostrophe mistakes, she uses flitter (more than once) instead of fritter, there are the odd words missed from sentences (....with car's sudden change of direction). One big old ouch was using omitted in place of emitted and this sentence just left me confused, "I can hear him walking closer to me, and I know to suspect him sitting comfortably at the kitchen table"......huh' ???? We had inapt used and not inept, diva like needs a hyphen and I reached weirdo spelled as werido and I'd seen more than enough. I will not be downloading anymore by her. Emma, our main character irritated me. She's an utter flake and that, coupled with her incessant drinking, just made me want to slap her one !! The story was sounding most intriguing, though. However, I can't be doing with wading through 300+ pages presented so badly.
I really enjoyed "No Kiss Goodbye" and I wondered if this book could match it, I am pleased to say it almost did. The story is told from three perspectives, Emma, David and Amber. Emma and David are married and Amber works for David. Emma has suffered from mental health issues and is about to take her own life at a train station when Danny, a railway worker intervenes. Soon they become friends and Emma has a new confidante. Not long after Danny is found dead and Emma is distraught, she cannot not believe that Danny would take his own life after saving hers. David worries that Emma will begin to self harm again and is extremely worried about her after Danny's death. Amber makes herself part of the family trying to help Emma but does she have her own agenda and what really are her motives? A very good psychological thriller that will keep you engrossed throughout.
This book was very good . The stranger was a look about him. Emma was a Nasty person . This book was really totally read for. I enjoyed this book by the book club xx
This book has so much going on, every chapter has you on a knife edge. I couldn't put it down, I was drawn in and swept along desperate to know the outcome and the reasons behind the lies and deceit. I can highly recommend this book I thought it was a brilliant phycological thriller. I was moved by the author's poignant and moving message at the end of book. Thank you for the ARC.
See Me Not is the author's second book and I was delighted to be asked to read it as I loved her debut No Kiss Goodbye. This is a tense and gripping page turner which left me breathless in places. If you like your psychological thrillers full of devious and twisted characters, with an underlying feeling of paranoia and dread then you will love this book.
I devoured this book in a little more than a day ... a couple of sittings! Loved it! Dealing with mental health issues myself I could very much relate and it touched my heart. It kept me wondering what the heck was going on and who was lying and who was not. I loved loved loved the ending! A great psychological thriller with a relatable story line!
I love psychological thrillers and this story - a psychological tale with a focus on mental health issues such as bipolar and depression and set in Ireland - kept me interested and absorbed without giving me that chilling, tingling, hand over mouth, heart beating too fast, what is going to happen next? edge of my seat, can I bear to read on? feeling.
I had to suspend disbelief as some aspects I found didn't ring true for me. Would it be realistic that a teacher could really get away with putting her head on her desk with a hangover while her class of 35 small children watched a DVD? And a high flying professional business woman with staff and clients relying on her - how could she spend so much time away from the office stalking?
I wished I warmed more to the main character but she did drink and fall apart rather a lot. There were also a lot of coincidences and I felt uncomfortable about Danny being described as an old man with his life behind him when he was just about 70 .. Not old and past it in age terms really.
I so wanted to be gripped and shocked by the secrets and The twist but wasn't particularly surprised or shocked at all. David, although a bit wet, came across as a saint to put up with all he did. Do men like him exist in real life?
An enjoyable read which I enjoyed. The story held me but didn't grip me. Maybe I have read a few too many of these kind of stories.
I think this book should come with a trigger warning. So here it is - there is a recurrent theme of suicide in this book. It is NOT an overt theme but is carried on throughout. And the author's notes at the end? They were like a punch to the gut for me. Having a teen child who has been struggling with mental illness for years, it hit me in a way I did NOT see coming. Having said all of that, I enjoyed the book - mostly. I found the characters to be less than likable - which is OK. There is no rule that says characters have to be likable to be relatable. The premise was extremely good and timely too. And while it didn't quite live up to the hype of the "preview," it was an enjoyable read. I did figure out most of the major "surprises" well before the book was over but there were enough that I didn't see coming to make it worth the read. All in all it was a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
A great psychological thriller full of twists and turns . Emma is holding a secret but someone out there knows and is watching her every move .. but why ? A real page turner that will have you guessing all the way . My thanks to tbc on fb for the opportunity to read and review
What impact does a secret you have carried since a teenager have upon your adult life and those who you love? This book gives you an insight in to this, especially when someone learns the secret and threatens everything you hold dear. Should you question your own sanity or does the person who knows this secret, toy with you in such a way that those you hold dear question it too?
This is a page turner. If I didn’t have to be sociable I would have read this in one day. The story unfurls at a good pace, allowing enough time for the characters to develop and for you to develop your own thoughts in relation to what is happening and why. Although you get different characters perspectives and take a journey through this story with them, the pace of revelation and understanding of why this is happening is such that you never want to put this book down.
At first I was not sure I liked Emma. Despite what happens early on in the book I felt that there must be so much more to her and you are not disappointed. I had such admiration and respect for the journey that Emma had travelled by the end of the book, she was by far the best character in this. The interplay between Emma, Danny, David, Amber and Kim’s stories, their perceptions of each and the evolving story show such a depth of understanding of relationships and the difficulties secrets and lies have.
This book is not a just a story, it is an education without you even knowing it. It challenges your own perceptions and tolerance of mental illness, the effects on those around you and also those decisions we make that we believe are correct at the time but on reflection they shape your whole being.
I would suggest reading this alone from 94%, the enormity of the ending and the feeling which emanate due to your investment in the plot, the characters and their outcomes leaves you emotional and I must confess I ugly cried for quite some time. Not only the ending but the honesty of Janelle Harris in the end message from her. It makes you reflect and realise the enormity of the effects upon people who find themselves in similar situations to what you have read.
I believe I have read everything published by this author and no two books are the same. I could not pigeon hole her if I tried. Her writing grows, makes you reflect and the stories are so real you feel you are there. Each time she has me in tears because you believe the characters that you read and you invest in their story.
This book is a five star read, I would give it more if I could. I hadn’t known what to expect and I would say disappointment and Janelle Harris do not feature in the same sentence at all. This exceeded anything I could have imagined.
This books 3 main characters, David, Emma and Amber, alternate chapters through the book, which are written in the first person. The story seemed to take a little while to get going, but once you get to know the characters, the story begins to move.
I had mixed reactions to both David and Emma. They seemed to talk to each other without really listening or paying attention to each other, and some of their reactions to what the other said didn't seem realistic. This played into the hands of another character though, and led to some very chilling passages of writing.
Focusing on mental health issues made the story as a whole an interesting one, as did the use of social media – although I don't understand why Emma did what she did with some of the texts and social media posts.
I have ended up in two minds about this book. Parts were engaging and chilling, and these are what kept me reading, but there were others that weren't as strong, where the language and grammar let the rest of the book down. Thanks to TBC for a review copy of the book.
I received an arc for an honest review. I loved it. The emotion, the sensitivity. Everywhere you read ,it was just full of questions, and answers. Slowly building, and when you thought "aha" , it twists. I was never confused and followed it easily, without it giving anything away. When I thought I had figured it out, I was wrong. This book was suspenseful, interesting, and emotional. Ms. Harris never has let me down. I truly enjoy her work. I have recommended her to many friends.
A reasonable idea but spoiled for me by the characters; Emma - I wanted to shake and say get on with your life, David - grow a pair and support your wife and Amber - who came over as completely ridiculous. Add in very slack editing (people do not "grown" even in pain) and you are left with a what could have been story.
A compelling psychological thriller readers of Ruth Ware and BA Paris will relish.
From the first page I was drawn into the characters. While the storyline started off slow and steady with the death of Emma’s train station friend, the pacing picked up when her husband harbors a secret that could destroy their marriage. But the drama only begins when Emma gets messages from a stranger who knows more about her life than she does.
With the revolving first-person narrative, each character comes alive. As we get to know Emma and David (and the eerie Amber), we feel their anxiety, their struggles, and their intentions. The chilling outsider who is watching them adds to the drama, though the real intensity of the plot doesn’t pick up until further along. We know some of the secrets, but there’s much to be discovered, especially as Emma wonders about the circumstances of her friend’s suspicious death.
It’s a twisty enjoyable read that delves into psychological depths. While the pacing is slow and steady, it evolves masterfully into a tale that fans of Ruth Ware and BA Paris will enjoy.
A cleverly written book that keeps you guessing the whole time. Emma receives message but she doesn't know from who. She befriends a railway worker at her local station and she confines in him. Her husband David has been head hunted, but his new job takes him away a lot from Emma. Soon Emma starts believing she's being followed; but by and why her. One business trip weekend away changes everything for David. Can he stop his world from caving in?
