The Wright Brothers #2

Pulling Doubles

Rate this book
All Devyn wants – besides a tall, fine husband and eventually a few babies to fulfill her “about to turn thirty, running out of time, cute black family” dreams – is to finish her yearlong internship at University Hospital. She’s excited about the experience, eager to learn, glad to help wherever she can… it should be easy, right?

Well, it would be… if it weren’t for arrogant, know-it-all, always-got-something-to-say Dr. Joseph Wright. Devyn can’t stand him, and if his attitude is any indication, the feeling is mutual… or is it?

Joseph doesn’t “do” doctors. Or nurses. Or patients. Or anybody else who has anything to do with the hospital, for that matter. University Hospital has infiltrated enough of his life, and the last thing he needs is a blurring of the lines between professional and private.

… until smart, sexy, sassy Nurse Devyn Echols comes along, and stomps all over those lines.

When you’re pulling doubles with the person you hate to want so bad… something is bound to ignite.

I had such a good time with this one, despite it including my least favourite trope: drama with an ex. We get two of these idiots in this book.

I mean, they played a role so I wasn’t too mad about it. Neither did it overshadow the romance.

But back to our beautiful couple.
I loved them! Their dynamic was so good, their chemistry palpable. I loved that they both worked in the medical field. The whole story had a little Grey’s Anatomy situation going on, which speaking of, I need to get back to that show. It’s been years!

Their hang ups about relationships ended with them entering an enemies-with-benefit situation. And because they couldn’t commit to more. Till the benefits got too damn good. 🥰

Once again, the narrators were amazing and I couldn’t stop listening to the audiobook.

Jumping in straight to the last book!

Trigger warnings for a narcissistic and emotionally abusive ex.

I read the first book in Christina C. Jones ‘The Wright Brothers’ series and I couldn’t wait to read the second. I mean, the oldest brother is a doctor and this is a work place romance- for this Grey’s Anatomy fan I had the highest of hopes! I liked both of the main characters, Devyn and Joseph a lot, but I felt like this one ended so abruptly. Honestly, it was a 4 star most of the way through for me, but I wanted so much more out of how it ended. Hoping we get some more of this couple in the next book of the series and will definitely check out more from this author!

While I didn't love this one as much as book one, it was still such a fun romance! It's enemies to lovers and an office romance. I really loved how fierce Devyn was and how she was working hard to be a Nurse Practitioner and demanded respect at her job. She could definitely hold her own with Joseph, who was the doctor she was learning from at work. He acted like he hated her, but he was just trying to cover up how much he liked her. I loved seeing the characters from the previous book and I really loved Devyn's brother! I really hope he has his own book!

Ya'llllllll I just want to eat up everything that Christina C. Jones has written. Like nothing has been a disappointment yet.

Pulling Doubles is the second book in the Wright Brothers series. This book specifically follows Devyn and Joseph. Devyn is close friends with Reese and we get to meet her in the first book. One of the best things about this book is that it takes place in a hospital. I'm definitely looking for more Black love romances that take place in hospitals so this hit the spot. I think that this is good for fans of Greys Anatomy, but it's not as toxic. The banter between Devyn and Joseph was great. I'm convinced that my love for a romance book soars when a writer can give me great banter between the characters. Devyn and Joseph are NOT fans of each other, but it was great to watch their relationship grow. There is also some great representation in this book including disability representation.

I know that a lot of people didn't enjoy this story as much as the first book, but honestly I think I enjoyed this one a little more because I found the inclusion of the medical aspects of the story really interesting. This book ends kind of abruptly. I did want more in terms of plot development. It's not that the ending doesn't make sense; however, I think that we should have had a little more build up and little more resolution. Nevertheless, if you like family saga romance books I think that this is a great one to check out. There are appearances from the characters of the first book. And once again readers get great characterization from CCJ. Joseph is prickly at first but eventually lets his walls down and becomes such a great support system to Devyn as she deals with a not so great ex. The side characters were just as amazing! There is definitely a clear set up to what characters we are going to see in the last book of the series. If haven't check out this series yet I highly recommend it.

I’m loving this series. The grey’s anatomy fanatic in me really enjoyed the hell out of this story. I just wished there was an epilogue to wrap up everything nicely because the ending seemed a little abrupt.

This should've been a 4 star or higher. I loved so much about it: both Joseph and Devyn were well developed characters, the hospital setting was great, the past relationship drama wasn't annoying or overdone (Malcolm can choke tho), ELITE banter...seriously this was so well done. I can see CCJ being an author I go to for rom coms because I've loved the humor in the books I've read by her. Genuinely funny, not at all corny. The side characters were great too, loved how CCJ gave us a peek into the development of Jay and Reese's relationship in a way that didn't feel forced. There was just so much to like.

But. I was just so disappointed at how fast the ending wrapped up, especially because the buildup was excellent. Idk I felt kinda cheated when I flipped to the last page. Also the random ass out of nowhere??? Not a dealbreaker but it was another addition to an unsatisfying ending I didn't like. It was only the last like 10-15% of the book so I can't knock it too much...but it immediately dropped it below the first book imo.

Ending aside, I definitely need more CCJ in my life and thankfully she has an insane backlist.

Ugh, writing this review hurts my soul! This second book in the Wright Brother series follows the brother that is a doctor and I was excited to read it. As it started I was enjoying the elementary school boy-girl antics that were happening between Joseph and Devyn. The N-word was dropped in conversation, then a character was introduced that I was annoyed with, the treatment of characters drove me up a wall, and by the end I kind of checked out. I didn't feel like I received resolution for one of the main issues that was thrown into the storyline and once again ending was abrupt.

This specific video review will be included in the September 2019 wrap-up.

"I've wanted to peel you out of your lab coat since the first moment I saw you."

I loved Pulling Doubles! The writing was very easy and pleasant to read. Devyn and Joseph were wonderful narrators, with distinct perspectives, and it was a lot of fun to read about them interacting at work.

The story didn't have major conflicts, which is always a positive point for me. The focus was more on humor and the relationship between Devyn and Joseph. They started hating each other and the feelings grew from there and I really enjoyed the development of their relationship. The steamy scenes were a wonderful bonus as well!

I also really liked that Jones dealt with diabetes being a point in the plot. I almost never see it being dealt with in books even when it's part of many people's lives.

And the end! I was not expecting the revelation that happened and I found it very sweet. My only complaint is that I wanted more pages about Devyn and Joseph's romance story.

I thought I was going to hate or at least be neutral but I am quite enjoying this. I usually don't like when they have sex too soon, but somehow they managed to keep the tension.

I liked the mature natural progression of thier relationship. I don't like the surprise baby troupe but I liked it as a conclusion in this. The reveal to Joseph was hilarious.

Pulling Doubles was a fun read! It's a workplace romance between Dr. Joseph, an OB/GYN, and Devyn, a nurse practitioner who is at the hospital on an internship so she can be fully certified. These two act like they don't like each other. Joseph is always antagonizing Devyn, and Devyn rightfully puts Joseph in his place. Of course, all of this "hate" just hides the intense chemistry between them, and one thing leads to another in the hospital storage closet.

I liked that a lot of the book actually took place at the hospital because sometimes we see books classified as a medical romance but the characters are barely seen at the hospital. You can tell the author did her research with the various procedures/visits in the book. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well (particularly the other Wright brothers and Joseph/Devyn's coworkers), because they added a humorous element to the story.

I would've liked a little more at the ending, as it ended a bit abruptly, but I would definitely recommend!

TROPES: workplace/medical romance (doctor hero; nurse practitioner heroine); “dislike” to lovers; black MCs (OWN voices); older MCs

THREE POINT FIVE STARS

Pulling Doubles is a romance set in a hospital.
♦ Medical professionals
♦ Enemies to lovers
♦ Dual pov

Back in the day, I loved watching nighttime medical dramas. Grey's Anatomy was on the top of my favorites list. I enjoyed watching the romance between coworkers and seeing how they would try to hide it from their colleagues. The sly flirting while trying to save a patient's life.

So far, the Wright Brothers are finding some great, confident women. These women aren't afraid to stand up for what they believe in. I'm looking forward to seeing who the next brother picks for his love interest.

PULLING DOUBLES is the 2nd book in The Wright Brothers series. It can be read as a standalone. Lovers of enemies to lovers.

Nurse Devyn Echols is finishing up her training to become a Nurse Practitioner, but her internship position means she has to work with Dr. Joseph Wright, a man as frustrating as he is handsome. Their personalities clash but Devyn soon finds out it is because Dr. Wright is very very attracted to her.

I really enjoyed the interplay and banter between Joseph and Devyn, and we get to see some of the characters from the previous book that I fell in love with too! Workforce dynamics are explored as well. I really need a story with Devyn's brother who starts dating her pregnant coworker!!!

Listened to on audio to fufill the Ripped Bodice Bingo Square "Health Care Professional"

There are some plot points I would like to mention for those who need the CWs:

Abusive ex-boyfriend character who is fatphobic, physically assaults Devyn, violates HIPPA, and slut shames
Pregnancy (of side characters and at the end)
Medical gore (surgery/blood/injections/fainting)

Super sweet and funny hate to love workplace romance. There is a accidental pregnancy, so if that ruins the book for you, maybe skip. The main character had diabetes. I love the Wright brothers, can’t wait to find out more about the older brother in his book, next.

I am really enjoying these Wright boys and their path to true love. Their appreciation for a woman comes from seeing it first hand from their parents, and family is a key part of these books. Joseph seems so uptight at the beginning, but wow, maybe he really isn't. Devyn is a wonder: hard working, centered, smart, and won't take crap from Joseph no matter how he hands it out. This book will certainly satisfy those who like the enemies to lovers trope. It was downgraded for me because the ending was so abrupt. Lots of time spent on the enemies portion, with great verbal sparring and secret longing, a good amount of time spent on the lusting, but hardly any time spent at all on the loving. I actually thought maybe I lost the final chapters. However, I will be reading the next book so I can get a glimpse of what is going on with these Wright boys and their ladies.

A bit too over the top with the ex(es) and I didn't like the trope at the end but overall I quite enjoyed this hospital romance.

First off I must say I’m enjoying the series! Love love love the Wright brothers! This story is centered around a OB/GYN doctor that would be Dr. Wright and nurse practitioner Devyn. Frankly these two can’t stand each other! Dr. Wright is arrogant and condescending when it comes to Devyn. A nurse practitioner Devon is not the one to pull those condescending words on. So they go at it all the time until they don’t. Hi Hildie and Joyce’s book definitely five stars

Re-read: 6/12/17 It feels good to re-read a book and like it more the second time around rather than less. Sometimes you read a book and the initial experience is bolstered by the excitement of a new story with new characters, but when you revisit those characters and that story, it doesn't really live up to the hype of the first read...That wasn't the case with this book. I pretty much read this book in one sitting BOTH times around and its because it's just THAT good.

Original Review

Why are they so shorrrrrttttt. I need MORE Christina. 170+ pages is literally JUST a tease. I could do with at LEAST 50 more pages of the Wright brothers and these Ladies I’ve grown to love already in just a single weekend.

BLACK LOVE and BLACK EXCELLENCE. That seems to be the theme for me this weekend.

Pulling Doubles is about Devyn who is a Nurse Practitioner, interning at University Hospital in order to earn her certification. She’s assigned to work with tall, chocolate, smart, handsome and arrogant Joseph Wright who seems to be doing everything in his power to get under her skin and she just doesn’t know why. It could be he’s just an asshole, maybe he doesn’t think she deserves to be around the likes of him, or maybe it's just a situation of playground teasing...pulling a girls hair because you like her. But Devyn doesn’t want to believe its the latter because we’re dealing with ADULTS here....right? lol

Christina definitely knows how to write swoon-worthy and feels filled novels. I mean CMON! This is the second book I’ve read by her where I couldn’t help grinning like a buffoon while reading it. I think what I love about the Wright brothers so much in these books, is that they’re these smart and successful men...but they’ve still got a little edge and swag to them. They aren’t posh, bourgeois men with degrees that think they’re better than anyone because they have Ph’D’s or bestselling novels. They’ll still get down and dirty with you if you come at them the wrong way and oh my God, is there anything sexier than the words “Do you think somebody is fucking playing with you?” coming out of the mouth of a Dark Chocolate man in a lab coat while he chokes up a misogynist pig who just blatantly disrespected and threatened a women. I’ll answer for you. NO!

There seems to be a pattern here with these men though. They come across these amazing, beautiful Black Queens and then start acting out like they don’t have any damn home training. They are 2 and 0 right now when it comes to being an ADULT about expressing their attraction for these ladies and its just like, ya’ll are GROWN! Stop portraying the adult version of a little boy pushing the girl he likes down in the playground. Get it together! But man is it still FUN as hell to watch. Banter and wit are one of my favorite things and Christina delivers that in spades in these books.

I seriously...SERIOUSLY just wish they were longer...or that there were at least more than two of these books at my disposal. Granted, she has plenty other novels to choose from, but in the short time that I’ve been reading these books, I’ve already grown to love the Wright brothers and the Ladies that they love. I’ve grown attached to seeing the respect, loyalty, and love they all have for one another as well as the strong image of family that is depicted. I need more!!! I already know the next book is going to be about the final Wright brother, Justin who is a bestselling author and the relationship he has...or lack thereof, with his ex-bestfriend Toni. I don’t even care what’s going to happen or how things will play out because I already know it’s going to be excellent and I just want it now!

BLACK LOVE!

Recommendation: I would absolutely read this book, not only is it super short (173 pages) allowing you to read it in a sitting, but its authentic, fun, punches you right in the feels and will have your lady parts all aflutter lol.

Unfortunately, this was a mixed bag.

What I enjoyed:
- The hospital setting: I am a huge sucker for medical dramas
- A take-no-shit heroine: Devyn is smart, ambitious, and damn good at her job and she will not tolerate any type of undermining
- The friend/family group: I definitely wanted to see more of Aviva and Eric!

What I did not enjoy/ What I found underwhelming:
- The initial interactions between Devyn and Joseph: I just could not get behind the whole "I choose to get under your skin because I like you" thing. Are we not adults? Can we not flirt and express romantic interest without the disrespect?
- The structure/ pacing: Some elements of the story seemed to be repeated over and over, while other parts seemed to come and go rather quickly.
- The ending: When I realized where the story was headed, I groaned internally. Given everything else the love interests endured throughout the rest of the book, I was hoping for a different conclusion.
