“Oh my goddess,” I whispered, releasing a breath. I had such a sense of foreboding.”
This was a YA fantasy story featuring elves.
Thea was an okay character, and I didn’t blame her for having reservations when she was told that she was really an elf. She did take the time to listen to people though, and she seemed quite happy to try and help the elves in their plight.
The storyline in this was about Thea learning about the elves and what was going on in their kingdom. We got quite a fast romance and a bit of a love triangle, and a bit of sci-fi mixed in with the fantasy with the introduction of a mad-scientist sort of character. I did find the dialogue a bit stiff at times though, and it seemed to take a while for the book to find its flow.
The ending to this was pretty good, whilst leaving us knowing that the story will continue in another book.
Thanks to Fire Quill Publishing & Liz Keel for my copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book had so much potential yet I felt like Keel was just rushing her way through it to get to the end, don't get me wrong it was a good read but it was just so fast it was making me lose interest.
Thea's world is about to change forever, first, she loses her parents in a horrible car accident which leaves her with no one except her best friend Eli's family who take her in. Shortly after coming to terms with the accident she is thrust into the world of Faery which takes her by surprise (obviously). She learns that Eli is not just her friend but her protector as he is a royal guard who was sworn to protect and look after her in the human world until her return to Aroben to take her place as Queen. Only it's not that easy, the current ruler of the Faery realm wants nothing but to destroy Thea and all who steps in his path. In amongst all this Thea is also under watch from the mysterious guard Issac who quickly catches her attention, but who will she choose?
Ok so the book has a great plot like seriously it has so much to offer but there was also so much missing, the characters had a lot potential but it felt like it was rushed so they were never really built up. These are Elves from a different realm let me know them!! I wanted to scream at the book to slow down so it could all be digested, it was just jumping from scene to scene and to be honest if someone told me I was some princess from a different realm they would have a hard time trying to get me into the deepest and darkest parts of a forest, no thank you!!
Thea really had the potential to be a great leading lady but she manages to jump into being an Elf so easy to believing everything, being the best at everything and forgetting she was from planet Earth, even the way she spoke, hello?! What seventeen years old just stops speaking like a teenager and starts to sound like someone from another world? It got to the stage I knew what was coming and what was going to happen I just was like what? seriously? good old YA cliche.
I loved the twins! Bay is this sarcastic, cocky, cheeky type that you knew you would love being around, and Irwen just came across as pure and truly wanting to be a good friend. I felt the guards could have been built up on a little more as we never really knew them at all you only got a little glimpse as it was just rushing to get to the end, and once again Thea kind of made out that she was mourning and she should have everyone around her, what about the rest of them that had known each other forever?!
I can't stand the whole good ole YA I love you but don't know you thing, it totally puts me off a book as soon as it happens but I started to get back into the story near the end so if you are like me stick with it I know that parts painful but there's so much good in this book! I am excited to see where it goes and hopefully it slows down and lets us get a good understanding of the characters with a steady build up to the story.
"Thea," he said simply, as he gently laid me down and kissed my tears, eyes and then lips. "You are my life, the centre of my world. I love you, Thea."
2 Star Read: Enlightenment is the first book in The Driel Trilogy. I was drawn to the book because I fell head over heels for every story I have read that involves elves. However, I didn’t find myself covered in the warm fuzzes while reading. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t dislike Enlightenment nor I didn’t love it.
I felt short changed in end. The characters had potential to become something more but they were flat. I think I would have loved to spend more time on developing Thea, Eli, Isaac, and the other elves. I would have enjoyed building a connection with the character instead of the rushed pace push to move from one scene to the next.
Overall It was okay but didn’t like the book all that much. However, the characters were borderline from unlikable to a few exceptions some were likable at best neutral at worst the plot was a bit poor. The writing was much better than expected with a few exceptions. I developed some interest in the book but not enough to sustain me but I withstood d to the end. Being part of a series, at least one thing peeked my interest to continue (the hope of character and plot development). Even though the plot was somewhat original or had its own unique flair, the romance was for lack of a better description flawed on more levels than one. The male/female leads had forced to very little chemistry, etc. Everything was too easily predictable. Overall, ok maybe some redeeming value!

This book is very difficult for me to review. It was very hard for me to make it through this, honestly.
This is more of a personal preference but exclamation points were used far too often. I also did not like how often ?! was used. I found it destracting and unnecessary.
I was not a fan of the love story here. The love triangle was completely and unnecessarily forced. I found the age difference between Thea and both Eli and Isaac quite disturbing with how it was portrayed. I also didn't like how Thea was so focused on how attractive they were when she should have been thinking about other things.
The pacing was a bit off for me. Too much happened in too short a time. I constantly felt like things were just being thrown at me.
This has potential, but too much of what would have made it an engaging read was glossed over. I know many people that I'm sure would enjoy it, but this turned out not to be a book for me, unfortunately.
Liz Keel's Enlightenment is the perfect fantasy story for young teenagers. Its fast paced, easy to read, action packed and a love triangle thrown in for the romantics.
In Enlightenment we are immediately plunged into the mystery and have to figure out a way to swim to the surface – that’s my kind of start!
The tone is rather light and the stakes are not too high, so younger readers will be able to enjoy it as well.
Thea is a bit immature at 17, often noting how handsome guys are, even when fighting for her life. But I find her behavior endearing because it makes her seem more "human" with all her flaws and mistakes. It gives her character a chance to grow.
Thea discovers that she is able to wield more than one element, making her stand out from the rest. Being able to control all the elements gives Thea an actual claim to the throne. She discovers that she has talents that could qualify her to lead. Whether she has the personality, maturity, determination, dedication, and honor that it would take to be a good leader is an entirely different story...
I would recommend this book to young readers who like books with clear-cut lines between good and evil and straight-forward designations as to who can be trusted and not trusted.
Enlightenment is action-packed, creative, and exciting -- and I absolutely need to know more!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
All Thea has ever known is the human world. She grew up in a loving home. A tragic car accident leaves Thea as the only survivor. Eli, her best friend, and his parents take her in so she can recover from this horrible event. Thea has always been drawn to nature. She can spend hours in the forest. Eli has always been there for Thea although she is beginning to suspect that he wants to come out of the friend zone. On their way to school Thea and Eli are attacked by creatures Thea never knew existed. Being in danger Thea suddenly discovers powers she never knew she had.
Eli has no choice but to take Thea back to their own world, the world of the Faey. Eli is a member of the Thill. The Thill will protect the royal family and every other person in the Faey realm if need be. Eli and his family are very proud that he was assigned to protect Thea. Eli will do anything in his power to keep Thea safe and he also hopes that one day they will become more than friends.
Thea is the princess of the Faey realm and her return means that she will take her rightful place as Queen. After her biological father and mother, the King and Queen, were murdered Thea was sent to the human world to hide. In the Faey world time went on as well and the elves are in need of their Queen. Every elve has its own unique gift, which are based on the elements. The gifts that elves are being blessed with are fire, water, earth, air and spirit. The counsil has a representative of every element but the man who has taken the crown, in absence of a King or Queen, has his own thoughts about who is valuable and who isn't. Thea only has four months to become ready. She has a lot of training to do and Thea also has to find out with which element she was blessed. It turns out she is even more special than she could have ever imagined.
Isaac is the head of the Thill. He has protected and watched Thea from a distance her whole life. Now that she is back he knows that she is the one for him. Their souls are connecting on a deeper level. Both of them feel the instant attraction straight away. Isaac can't bear the thought of losing Thea after losing her parents all those years ago, will she be safe? When the enemy is closer than they think everyone needs to be on high alert.
Thea is a young girl of seventeen when she finds out her true origin. Some of the decisions she makes can be attributed to her age. She works hard to accomplish what is asked of her and Thea is determined to be the Queen that everybody is longing for. Thea is smart and unique in her own way. She is also kind, loving and protective towards her friends, which are character traits of a worthy Queen.
Enlightenment takes the reader to a beautiful magical world. The way Thea describes the Faey world when she enters it for the first time made me want to go there as well. I loved the detail that every elve is given a unique gift, so that they would be united in their goal to achieve harmony, love and respect. Everyone has to work together to use their gift for the greater good. Liz Keel makes the characters come to life really well and she kept me on the edge of my seat while I was reading about Thea and her journey to become Queen. Enlightenment is a brilliant start of a new series with plenty of characters that are waiting to evolve. I wouldn't be surprised if this series would be made into a movie.
Enlightenment was a fun, fast paced, fae fantasy. Lately, I have been looking for books with elves and this seemed perfect.
What I liked :
Characters Thea was the Chosen one in the story. She discovers that she is not only an elf, but the Future Queen of elves. She is thrust into a new world, surrounded by threats and forced to adapt. She worries about staying alive and the fate of the kingdom. But she exceeds expectations and transforms from teen to future queen by giving her best. Eli was her guardian angel, best friend and rock. He represented safety & familiarity in her life. Isaac was the unknown and Thea trained under him to prepare for her role as Queen. He was secretive and distant, which made Thea wary.
Elves The focus was on the elves and other creatures like trolls, goblins featured in minor roles. Each elf had an affinity for a specific element and this determined their abilities. I loved seeing Thea's abilities evolve, it reminded me of Pokemon at times.
Pacing The pacing was fast and the character and reader are plunged into a dangerous world. I really enjoyed this aspect and the editing was flawless. I finished this in two sittings and am waiting anxiously for the sequel.
Its not what it seems This is related to a twist in the last few chapters. This is a spoiler free review so all I can say is, the twist will blow your socks off.
What I didn't like :
Low emotional connect I was not really affected by the changing circumstances and felt like an observer at times. This allows the reader mental distance from the characters and their troubles.
No Downtime The characters don't get a break or any time to mourn, be shocked, laugh, relax or think about things. They are racing against a clock most of the time so it was justified. But due to this we don't get a chance too dig deeper into the psyche of the characters. At times I wanted to urge them to pause, take a deep breath and have some hot chocolate.
I am really curious to figure out what happens next and will definitely read the next book in the series. This is strongly recommended to anyone who enjoys YA Fantasy. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I had problems with the pace of the story and the writing. The sentence structure was a bit off at times in my opinion and it didn't flow. The plot moved lightning fast and the romance that develops was too unrealistic for me, especially the dialogue between those two characters. .
This book was interesting, it had some very good parts and some parts that weren’t so good. I don’t really know what to think about it.
Thea is the main character, along with her best friend Eli. In the past year, her parents were killed and she was pretty traumatized. At the beginning of the book, otherworldly creatures attack Thea and Eli. Eli decides this is a great time to tell Thea that she is actually an elf from a different realm. Elf royalty to be more specific.
Thea accepts all of this pretty quickly and follows Eli to the elf realm. This part of the story is the source for all of my negative thoughts on the book. Thea accepts this far too quickly and it’s just unrealistic. Imagine if someone, even your best friend, walks up to you and tells you that you aren’t human… would you readily accept it? This is a very short book, and instead of just rushing into the heart of the story, the author could have easily added another chapter or two about Thea coming to terms with these revelations before rushing to the other realm. It would have made the novel a lot better.
That’s really the only real complaint I have. Otherwise, it’s an entertaining book. It’s very easy to read and well written. I enjoyed Faey, the elf realm, a lot. The world building was subtle but good and the characters were well developed. The dialogue could be a bit stilted but not too bad. This book has romance, adventure, a bit sci-fi, and of course, the main plot is all fantasy. It would appeal to a wide range of people.
In Enlightenment, seventeen-year-old Thea wants nothing more than to be a normal teenager. She is anything but normal, though, as is revealed when she’s attacked by mysterious creatures she believed only existed in fairytales. Now she’s thrown into the realm of the Faey, where nothing is at it seems, darkness lurks around every corner, and she has no idea who to trust.
Oh my god, this book was amazing. Thea was awesome, just awesome. She had so much to learn, but instead of worrying, she just got right down to business. As usual in YA books, there’s a good deal of romance, and while the romance was a little fast for my tastes – I prefer the long, drawn-out build ups that can last for several books – I actually really liked the love interest and the chemistry he and Thea had in their scenes together. While all the characters were great, Thea and Isaac were my favorites. I particularly admired Thea’s courage and the great lengths she would go through to save her friends.
The world building was excellent. I want to know so much more about the world of the faey now, and I can’t wait to find out! The writing was wonderful, and I simply couldn’t put this book down. If you enjoy YA fantasy, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
Absolutely magical! Thea lost her loving parents in a car accident and was taken in by her best friend's parent to recuperate and deal with her grief. After being attacked in the forest by a dark being, she's quickly thrust into a hidden magical world of the Faey. She discovers she is in fact the elf princess of Faey and the rightful queen. Her best friend Eli and his family are part of the Thrill- tasked with protecting the royal family and will do anything to protect her. As she comes to terms with her newfound latent powers and throne, she must also adjust to her feelings for both Eli and the one her heart pulls to- Isaac. While a love triangle never really developed, she still must get her emotions under wraps as well as trying to figure out which powers she was imbued with. The descriptions of the Faey realm were absolutely magical and vivid- making me clearly see them in my own head and yearning to journey there myself! The characters were pretty complex and each and their own unique personalities. I absolutely enjoyed this fast-paced adventure and found myself unable to rip myself away until I finished it! I can't wait to see what the sequel may bring!
I found this story to be filled with action and adventure. Throw in some romance with a love triangle, and you have the beginning of this trilogy. Thea, our heroine is a person you can really identify with. Did I mention there are 2 good looking Elves - Eli and Issac who are both vying for Thea's affection. I have mixed feelings on who Thea will choose. Be warned the book has a lot of action and you need to pay attention to detail. Overall it is a very promising start to a trilogy. I am glad that I discovered this author. I would also like to thank this author for gifting me with this book for an honest review. This is a series to read !
I received a copy from the author, in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Liz Keel for the opportunity to read your book. This was a good read. I thought Thea was an okay character. Also, I found her to be a bit annoying at times. The story tended to get boring at some places. I did like how Thea stood up for the bullied. That was my favourite part. However, I did not like the switch in POVs near the last quarter of the book. I thought that dragged the book out. Can't wait to see what happens in book 2. Overall, an okay read.
First off, this book is about Elves. Which is a genre I enjoy reading. There isn't a dull moment with this tale. It's full of conspiracy and twists, great humor, romance and action packed. This fantasy novel is very creative and exciting for young readers. Fans will find the story well defined between good and evil plus direct designations as to who can be trusted and not trusted.
Just a heads-up the book will draw readers in with the action remember pay attention to detail.
Liz Keel has a very infesting story idea, but unfortunately the story did not work for me.
Thea, the protagonist, is very quickly thrust into a new world, where she learns that not only is she an elf, but a royal one as well.
The pacing is, in my opinion, rushed. There is not a lot of time for character development, which ultimately makes the characters come across flat. I would have liked to see Thea’s world fleshed out a bit more. The love triangle is introduced somewhat early in the story and the romance felt hurried as well- she fell a little too quickly for it to be relatable/understandable. There was not enough time to get to know this new world or these characters as well as I would have liked. Events happened really quickly, with not much of a breather in-between.
The words felt stiff as well, at some points coming across rather redundant. I also didn’t enjoy the ?! symbols that were scattered through-out the novel.
The story does have potential, but it needs to be slowed down and fleshed out.
Personally I have mixed feelings for this book. I'm giving it 4 stars because I can't do 3.5 and it doesn't deserve a 3. This was an easy read, and while I wasn't broken up about putting it down to get other things done I also didn't find myself looking for things to do as an excuse to take a break from it.
The plot line is one I've seen before but I'm curious to see where Liz takes this, if it follows the more traditional path or if she'll go a new route. Fingers crossed for something a little new and exciting.
My only complaint is the instalove. I think if done right it is fine but this one just felt off to me.
All in all, no regrets about picking this book up and I'd be open to reading the next one but probably won't look for it.
In a mystical world with magical beings like elves, Thea finds herself surrounded by a life, a destiny, she didn't know about. Entering this world, she discovers that many realms, worlds, are connected, and the wellbeing of all is threatened by one who is controlled by greed, and a hunger for power. Thea, and her family of new friends are on an odyssey to fight against the impending evil. In this intriguing tale, written by Liz Keel, it also shows how the lack of humanity can have devastating consequences for those in the mystical world. A well written book of fantasy with food for thought. I enjoyed The Journey that also symbolized hope, the importance of working together, and never giving up. I would recommend this novel, Enlightenment, to anyone.

Opinion: Alright readers, today I present you with book 1 in The Driel Trilogy, and unfortunately for all of us, book one just came out on April 18, 2016. So now we all must await the second and third books, which will hopefully be out soon?! FINGERS CROSSED! This is another take on the fantastical Faey and elvish creatures that we so love to read about, but keep in mind that this is quite a fast paced book.
Soon after Thea loses her family in a car accident, and is taken in by her best friend Eli’s family, her world changes forever. Not only must she cope with a tragic loss, but she also learns about an entire mystical realm that she was taken away from as a child in order to protect her. Not only is Thea actually an Elf, but she is the princess of a king and queen that mysteriously perished when she was a child. While she once thought that Eli was just a close friend that was very protective over her, she soon learns that he is a royal guard that was sent back to the human world in order to protect her. Now as threats from the Faey realm have come to the human world to try and kill Thea, she has no choice but to return to a place that was once her home called Aroben. But upon arriving in Aroben, Thea comes across another guardian named Isaac who quickly captures her heart. Now Thea must find a way to not only become Queen of Aroben, but to stop the current ruler who may also be the reason for her parent’s deaths.
Okay, so I finished this little gem yesterday and was actually feeling a bit wishy-washy about it. The story-line is great, I like the characters, and I enjoyed where the author took it. BUT, man does this book move FAST. From the beginning, the author just rushes you through a whole bunch of valuable information, and by the second or third chapter the main character is already being told she’s an Elf. I have seen a few books start out like this, literally jumping right into the premise of the story, so I wasn’t too perturbed by it. However, this fast pace continues throughout the ENTIRE read. It just feels like the author is completely rushing through everything to get to the end. I mean it keeps you enthralled, but where is all the “downtime”? As a reader, you will feel like you have a basic understanding of these characters because, let’s be real here, they are pretty much like every other character we have read about in a fantasy trilogy. A young female lead character with a tragic past but a purpose in life, a young man who is always by her side ready to protect her, another young male who is potentially the “badass” or “bad boy”, and an evil character who just tries to kill everyone and everything for power and just because he is a weirdo. See? Pretty much every character you already know. Here is what is bugging me; the author had a chance to really make these characters different and unique, but instead just rushed over their character development. I will say though, I am QUITE fond of how this love triangle thing turned out. Although, this is only book one. Don’t disappoint me Liz Keel!
Apart from all of that rambling above, today I have found my full appreciation for this story. It doesn’t have werewolves and vampires, or any demons. It purely focuses on one fantasy aspect, and that is Elves, and maybe the occasional dragon and goblin or two. Though I would have preferred if the author slowed down a bit during the writing, I can honestly express that it kept me very interested and I refused to put it down. I am very excited to see what book 2 will bring, and what will happen with the character of Thea. Hopefully the author puts a bit more detail into the characters and writing, but we shall see.
This book and trilogy would be suitable for young adult readers and adults alike. If you are buying this for a younger teen, please keep in mind that there is a bit of swearing and lusty moments that are strictly PG…maybe PG-13 depending on your level of modesty.
**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for honest review.**
What would you do if you woke up one morning and learned that you were secretly royalty of a fantasy kingdom in another realm? Or that your best friend is really a highly trained guardian that has been hiding you from your enemies? What about the fact that you have magical powers beyond your wildest dreams?
That is precisely what happened to Thea. Leaving to catch the school bus one morning, she finds herself being attacked by grotesque creatures bent on killing her. Discovering magical powers that she didn't know she had, Thea fights to escape, along with the help of her friend, Eli.
But then Eli drops a significantly shocking secret into Thea's lap. She is actually an elf and the princess of a kingdom in another realm. Oh, and that they were leaving right away to return to said kingdom so she can finally reclaim her throne and become the queen.
Thea handles this revelation well, I think. Considering, in most instances...
After arriving in the new realm, Faey, Thea meets several more of her kingdom's protectors, including the head guard, Isaac. She feels immediately drawn to him, despite his icy demeanor. This eventually causes a dilemma for Thea, as she hasn't even sorted her possible feelings for Eli, at this point.
Her return to the realm does not go without its challenges. In order to become the queen, Thea must complete training that she hasn't even started yet, and only has four months to do it. She must learn fighting, weapons, history, and magic. And all the while, she has to avoid her evil nemesis who wants nothing but to see Thea fail.
I flew through this book. I didn't want to put it down. I think the author did a fabulous job of portraying Thea's experience of learning her true identity and falling into this new world. The pacing was fast but I had no problem keeping up. The romance was a bit 'quick' for me, but I've come to expect this in YA novels. The "I love you's" tend to come earlier when dealing with teenagers, so I tried to ignore the cringe I felt when I saw them. We eventually do get to see a couple of chapters from Isaac's POV.
The fight/action scenes are descriptive but don't drag on and on like is done in some fantasy novels. My only big critique is I wanted more description as far as the characters go. We get to "see" the surroundings and scenes much better than the actual people inside of them. I finished the book and couldn't even remember what color hair Thea had. But I knew exactly what the inside of the caves/tunnels looked like.
In closing... A strong beginning to what I expect will be a good fantasy trilogy. 4 suns!
I received a copy of this book as a buddy read and review opportunity.
Honestly, this book was bad. It had potential to be spectacular but it fell really flat.
I'll explain more later.
Liz Keel, you have potential, but this could have used a lot more work. Give yourself time. Talk to other authors about story telling. You had all the right elements and changing sentence structure and you did what you were supposed to do to make a book plot, but the execution just really needs work. Slow down. Find your voice. Relax. Tell a story out loud to someone and watch theirs eyes as you build suspense. Then write. Those are my suggestions.
Thea is a 17 year old girl trying to move on with her life after the tragic accident that killed both her parents. In the year since their death she has been living with her best friend Eli and his family. On the first day of their senior year, Thea and Eli are attacked on the way to school. After escaping the attackers, Eli tells Thea the hidden truth about who she is. Thea is the princess of the elves, in hiding in the human realm since her family was murdered by Minen, one of the stronger council elders so that he could rule in their place. Now that she was old enough, Thea needed to return to Faey and take up her role as future queen to right the wrongs done to her people in her 16 year absence.
The return to her homeland has brought many changes in Thea. She is learning to accept and embrace who she is. She is aware of Eli’s affection for her but after the instant connection with Isaac, the leader of her guardians (the Thill), Thea is struggling to decide who she wants to be with. She is also struggling to master her abilities in the short amount of time before her coronation. Add in the fact that she knows Minen must be up to something, the disappearance of so many earth-wielding elves, and potential attacks that mean she probably isn’t safe, and things are more than complicated in Thea’s new life.
This was an interesting story. I enjoyed the world that the author created and Thea was a very likable character. I was glad that she did not immediately accept that she was a hidden princess and gladly follow Eli off to stake her claim. Though she did accept it quickly, there was a more logical progression that made more sense than many similar story lines. The land of the elves was not described much but was stated to be similar to the human realm that Thea was used to. I liked that idea as most elven stories have a more medieval description than modern, though I would have enjoyed a more in depth description of the location.
The characters were well fleshed out. Most of the main characters had depth to their personalities and motivations that made sense. Though I felt like little was actually known about Isaac, which may be a part of why I did not embrace him as a romantic prospect. Which leads me to the romantic aspect of this story; I sincerely believe this story would have been better without the romance. They were contrived and made little sense. I am never a fan of the instant love that trumps the life long connection story, but this one actually almost ruined an otherwise excellent story for me. The relationship made no sense and the intimate scenes were actually very awkward, from the description to the characters’ conversations. Scenes that should have felt exciting felt embarrassing. Luckily the rest of this story was well done and fascinating enough that I would be interested in continuing the story in the next book. I received an ARC copy of this book to review.
This book took me long to read even though it was a short one. I think that it has a lot of potential, I was really into the whole elves thing, but the book was going way too fast for me to really get in it and don't let it go.
Thea is an ordinary girl from our realm, human world, and suddenly she discovered that she was actually a princess from the elves realm. And that was it. She panics for 10 minutes and then she just accepted her new life. Just like that. She started acting like she has been living there her whole life and also talking like she was older so sudden that it didn’t look authentic or at least it didn’t fit that much for me. She didn’t let me know more about this new world. She just rushes on them and that was it. They are elves with awesome powers, and an amazing natural environment that was capable of heal them, they also have great personalities and big parties. C'mon!!!! I wanted to know more. But it felt like she was trying to make the book short and not too complicated. The other thing is the insta love with Isaac that just freak me out. That kind of things put me out of a book reaaaaaally fast. She saw him and she was immediately crazily attracted by him. And he was this alpha irresistible male who looks really dangerous and was also attracted to her. The good thing is that the love triangle didn’t get much in between, because she didn’t let the situation grow. And well as I said before was too fast. In this book, everything was way too fast, it happened in 4 months that she wrote in less than 150 pages, a little bit to much cliché and well, I started to predict what would happen. The main characters were absolutely great at everything and such an excellent guys that it didn’t felt as good as it should. I didn’t get attached to them. At least not to Thea or Isaac.
The twins in the other hand were just amazing. They made me want to keep reading. Bay was cocky, sweet and charming and Inween was just sweet, tender and a really loyal girl. They were such a good characters. I was really worried about them and Kyla. Oh Kyla. The ending was good. Really good. Actually I didn’t expect this to happen. It gave a new perspective and it looked more mystical for me. It has this thing that drives you to the next one.
Over all I think that this book has a great plot and that if she managed to develop it better it could be an awesome story. It was entertaining and I enjoyed it. 3/5 Stars

This novel totally and utterly blew me away, I couldn’t put it down and it started with the cover, its perfect!! The mystery and intrigue behind Thea’s expression as well as the slightly moody background were enough of a reason to make me want to find out more about her story.
Whilst I’m normally more into paranormal books, I like to read the fantasy genre as well which is why I chose this novel. I also got this ARC on Net Galley as I said I’d give an honest review so here I go…
Liz Keel I love your writing style and I’m now waiting on tenterhooks for the next installment! The rest of you may be asking why? Let’s start with the plot: The story, which deals with the struggle of those who want to defend their right to exist in a modern and/or future society is right up my street. Thea (who had been living in the human world and only recently found out she is an elf) learns how important she is in this struggle as she finds out she is the sole survivor to the throne and needs to go back to her kingdom to fight the injustice led by an elf called Minen.
Whilst back home in Aroben and before she can become queen, Thea has lots of tasks to complete including reaching enlightenment all while her guards try and protect her from the evil that stands in her way. Minen obviously doesn’t want her to succeed especially as he has been ruling the kingdom in her absence. He’s a nasty piece of work throughout because he expects elves to be treated according to their element, earth, air, fire, water and spirit. I don’t want to give too much else away at this point but with everything she faces you will be cheering Thea on one minute and wanting to cry with her the next.
I loved the hidden plot twists which kept me intrigued and overall I felt the story was exciting, fast paced, interesting and with a hint of romance. The characters were developed and had great arc. Each were unique and with realistic personalities. I loved reading the development of their relationships, including between Isaac and Thea which goes from distrust and frustration, to trusting, friendship, caring and then love. In my opinion you can’t beat having an alpha male who is protective and a little possessive and this, Isaac has in abundance in his need to protect her at all costs.
This book I’d wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who loves action, bravery, a little romance, and a ton of adventure.
Enlightenment has an exciting premise featuring 17-year-old Thea whose life is turned upside down when she discovers that she is, in fact, an elf from the realm of Faey.
There were so many interesting characters in Enlightenment that had so much potential, but unfortunately I felt that they seemed to lack development. Things just happened too quickly to give them proper time to develop who they are as characters, and because of this I never felt as connected to them as I hoped to be. Despite this, they were still very lively and their roles in the story were strongly defined.
The romance angle was exceptionally enjoyable to me because it initially appeared as though it would become a love triangle, but it never became a true triangle! The romance is not necessarily what you might expect, but it was rather satisfying to see something somewhat out of the norm. However, my big problem with the romance was that it also developed way too quickly and I felt like the characters went from being total stranger to soulmates way too quickly.
What was interesting to me - and what I loved most about this book - was the magic system, and I wish that there had been more thoroughly explained. I always enjoy magic systems where different people have different powers that sort of builds a sort of hierarchy (whether the hierarchy is intentional or not), such as in Enlightenment: the elves have power over earth, water, air, or fire. I found it interesting to see how these different groups create their own hierarchy which thus creates tension.
Overall, I have to say that the biggest problem I had with Enlightenment and what prevented me from giving it more stars was simply how fast-paced this story was. There was very little time for true development to happen for characters, plot, or even world-building. One second I was being introduced to a new character, the next I was being introduced to a brand new world. I also noticed quite a few grammar and structural problems that did hinder my enjoyment and understanding ever so slightly, but this is something that can easily be cleaned up and is not a reflection of the plot of the story itself.
I absolutely frickin loved this book, it was an awesome read!
This story is a really different read, i haven't read anything like this before! It is such an enjoyable read! I read this in a day i enjoyed it that much, i couldn't stop turning the pages, a little obsessively just to find out what happens next in this action packed fantasy book. It is filled with magic and the elements as well as so many different emotions from the twists and turns the storyline gives you. There really is so much about this book i loved, i am trying to be very conscious of not giving away any of the storyline!
Thea is such an inspiring character, although she is young in age it's like she has got an old soul, she seems to be able to take thing in a lot quicker than most, not to mention how well she takes to certain aspect of her new life, she is so courageous even though she doubts that she can take it all on. She has a huge heart and when she loves, she loves fully, its lovely to see her confidence build up throughout the book! I loved Isaac's character, he is so protective towards Thea and will do anything to protect her even if she doesn't agree to his plans. Reading their interaction was so realistic and like a conversation you would hear not one from a book and this is due to how it is written. The other character that was written in such a realistic and real way was Eli, he is also extremely protective of her, his feeling spilling out a lot even when he hasn't said anything and i hope he gets his happy ending. There are a few more characters that i would love to gush about but really don't want to ruin anything.
I couldn't believe how amazing this storyline was, i was seriously hooked on every page, this is such a brilliant read and i really would suggest for everyone to read this book!! There is so much to it and i so hope that there is a second book to this in the making! This author is extremely talented and the world should know how good she is! A definite 5* rating without a doubt!!!
I received this book for free in exchange of a honest review as part of the Read It and Reap program ongoin in the Shut up & Read Group
I'll start by saying I'm a Fantasy addict. I signed up to read this book only to remember later that Goodreads kept on recommending me to read it and I have to admit it did a great job. Thank you!
I totally recommend this if you like fantasy, you like new original setting, if you like love triangles. It's a light reading. Action kicks in really fast which works really great for me since to me the most important thing in a book are plot & action. I'm always looking forward to know what's going to happen next. The plot is great and I'm curious to find out where it's headed. We have a villain with a plan which kind of reminds me of Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices.
Talking about characters and relationships, I'd like to see more character development and love relationships were rushed. I want to see more of Irwen and Logan, with Bay trying to keep his "little" sister safe. The main three — our newfound princess Thea and her two love interests Eli and Isaac — are (obviously) part of a love triangle. I'm happy that I didn't get to hate Thea. She's lovely, but I'm usually attracted by the unlucky side in love triangles and I knew this was going to be painful for me since I met Eli (I'm still rooting for you, baby!). I'm all in for sweet, loyal, more-than-a-bff kind of guys.
So I hope we'll get more introspection into character feelings (all of them), deeper dialogues and more interactions between them.
Enlightenment, a fantasy phenomenon of a book, is the first novel in the Driel triology and will grip you from start to finish with its mystery, excitement and brilliance! This wonderful book is about a young girl called Thea; she thinks she is human but, when walking in the woods with her good friend Eli, she is attacked by non-human-like creatures. Then Eli reveals she is not actually human, but an elf ! Not just any elf though, she is the daughter of the murdered king and queen and the only one who can overthrow the evil elder of the Elf council [Minen]. However, each Elf has an element which they can control, but Minen, hungry for power, is trying to create a super race of elves using Earth Elves. To his delight, Thea iscaptured! But then she is saved and sets all the other Earth elves free. Minen has many more of these places though, so she has to stop them now she is queen of the Elevish kingdom and hopefully she will in the future books!
I recommend this book to people, who love thrilling, heart-pounding novels and persons that enjoy reading fantasy thrillers. On the age side of things, this book is aimed at 11+ because of some words used in the story. As well, its contains quite a complicated plot which younger readers may not understand.
Personally, I think this wondrous fantasy book is a must-read and excites, saddens and impresses those who are privileged enough to read it! Its emotion grips you from start to finish and I think Liz Keel could become the next J.K Rowling!
