The author argues that Chinese military theory is closely related to the socio-economic conditions of Chinese society. He bases the historical and contemporary analysis on primary documents and a thorough and complete search of all available materials. The author also locates Chinese military theory in the present strategic situation of Shine and speculates about the direction and future of China's development.

I felt very differently towards the different sections of this book.

The writing and organization is mostly clear, direct and of a high calibre throughout. Moreover, I felt the material in Chapters 1-4 was especially informative, in-depth, well chosen and to the point. However, from there the quality seemed to slip; Chapter 5 was decent, Chapter 6 had (in my opinion) too much focus (with too many pages dedicated to it in the overall book) and finally, the last chapters have simply become outdated.
