Adventures Ahoy!

Even cleaning up is an adventure when Sardine comes to town!  Roaming through the galaxy with her space-faring friends, Sardine’s always up for vexing vile villainy and thwarting terrible tyranny -- leaving a little time for baking and bedtime stories, of course!

Ten of Sardine’s wacky and wonderful adventures are told in simple, scribbly artwork in this sixth volume of the Sardine in Outer Space series by Emmanuel Guibert.

Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor’s Daughter with Joann Sfar.

In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.

Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world and soon to come from First Second books, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980’s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefèvre.

Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.

Sardine in Outer Space 6 is another fun-packed collection of short stories starring Sardine, L'il Louie and Captain Yellow Shoulder aboard their ship the Huckleberry. As they foil the plans of Supermuscleman and Doc Krok, they fight the evil that threatens their universe. To tell the truth, Supermuscleman and Doc Krok aren't really all that bad because they are too stupid to be truly evil. They will make kids laugh.

Early Chapter readers will love these quick stories. The colors are bright and vibrant and the translation from French to English is spot-on. The stories all all extremely different and kids will be entranced by Sardine always outwitting Supermuscleman and Doc Krok. The artwork is mediocre at best and if this was improved, the feel of the book would be awesome. It is too bad that Fabrice Parme is not drawing this book. His work on Tiny Tyrant is absolutely brilliant.

Girls will like the strong lead character in this book. Sardine is always ready to lead the charge to bust Supermuscleman and Doc Krok. She knows what she wants and knows how to get it.

Overall, Sardine in Outer Space 6 is another great collection of short stories that Early Chapter readers will read again and again. I give these books to the middle school where I work and the kids are always clamoring for more. They will be very happy to receive this book tomorrow. So, if your Early Chapter reader is struggling with traditional Early Chapter books, pick up a copy of one of the Sardine in Outer Space books. Who knows? It may just start them on the path to loving to read.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.

As a woman in my 30’s, I had to use my imagination to appreciate the humor in the graphic novel Sardine in Outer Space. If I were 8 or 9—and most likely a boy—I’d find the silliness and potty humor particularly appealing. The short chapters and exciting, vivid illustrations make each story easy to follow, so it is also a great introduction to graphic novels for tweens. The characters in Sardine are outrageous (Space Indians AND Cupid in the same chapter--what?!?) and that makes it a wild ride for the reader. I’d suggest this for younger rather than older tweens.

It is sad to think that there are no more Sardine's to read to the children (although there appears to be another in French, which is motivating Louisa to learn the language). But this one kept up the high standards of the previous, with the drawings slightly worse than 1-4 which were done by Joann Sfar and the plots increasingly meta. Lots of fun.

Somewhat disappointingly, this volume doesn't pick up where 5 left off. The further adventures of Sardine, her uncle Yellowshoulder, and the rest of the gang of misfits are sure to entertain both young and old! In this volume: Doc Krok attempts to write a book, Yellowshoulder tells a story of how he lost his eye, and the whole gang presents a lesson on how to care for a sick planet!

This graphic novels series is new to me, I look forward to recommending this series to kids who are Wimpy Kid fans. This series is funny, filled with action and adventure, and great characters! Kids are going to love the unfolding stories in this series.

So far the person in charg of the kids is telling the story of how he lost his right eye. I think it is all a lie.
