It took me awhile to get through this one. For a BDSM/romance book it's fairly long at about 400 pages and I lost interest here and there. Despite the abysmal book cover and the unflattering, in my opinion, name "Mistress Bonita" I think on the whole that this was an okay read.

For the flavor of BDSM this is pretty hardcore. I've read some BDSM books that are lighter versions of it, involve only spanking, or are more about a domme/submissive power dynamic without the toys and pain. This is not those. Mistress Bonita has a lot of experience and a full playroom of contraptions and implements that she happily uses.

The premise is that Rachel, a woman who's never been involved in the BDSM world at all, is seduced by a domme when Rachel DJs one of the BDSM masked parties. After she's seduced, the domme reveals her identity and Rachel is aghast to discover that "Mistress Bonita" is in fact her nemesis from college who acted as the president of their sorority. However, the taste of this new world and Mistress Bonita/Emma are too alluring to deny so Rachel dives in head first and instalove and BDSM scene upon BDSM scene ensues.

If you're interested, the story is from Rachel's point of view as a submissive.

What's good is that the scenes themselves are written in a way where they flow. There is some decent writing here in that respect and the book focuses on the emotional side of being in the domme/sub world in addition to the erotica aspects. Both characters, Rachel and Emma aka Mistress Bonita are depicted solid enough and I felt like I had a good handle on them.

I'm assuming the BDSM rules and scenes are fairly accurate and the book in some ways acts as a "how-to" manual. There's a variety of different types of domination scenes as well as a mix of Rachel with Emma vs Rachel with Mistress Bonita. There's also a difference in Rachel's personality between when she's being a submissive vs being out in the world. Different prejudices, assumptions, and good dommes vs bad dommes vs good dommes that screw up sometimes are explored.

I will say that though the erotic scenes are written pretty well they do become repetitive.

We do get instalove which is somewhat forgivable since they did share time together in college, though that's not a complete free pass, either. But the characters also have some conflicts that they always quickly resolve because they DO communicate so that's a plus. These are two happy love birds, for sure.

For issues, yes there are quite a few grammatical errors but what bugged me more was that the story definitely felt more like a fantasy than real life. Rachel's career, their house hunting, their falling in love are just magically perfect and successes occur right away. The "I love you"s are said right away, laid on thick and said frequently.

Rachel is also a natural born submissive even though she's never been in the BDSM scene and goes from 0 to 60 as the most amazing submissive ever right out of the gate.

There's also this odd thing where Rachel's friends are roped into the BDSM scene because they are so curious about it, though their reactions are a spectrum and not just super happy like Rachel's. But, it's almost like whoever they come in contact with will end up being a sub and, yes, one of the friends is brought into Rachel and Mistress Bonita's love nest for a threesome.

I'm still not sure why Emma chose her domme name to be "Mistress Bonita". Maybe she said so in the book but I can't remember. I associate "bonita" with Spanish and Mistress Bonita is described in a way that matches a blonde haired, blue eyed barbie doll from an all white world so it seems like an odd choice to me and never really fit her.

And lastly, there's a villain-like domme character to the story that is referred to as "the Butch". I'm not sure how to take her. I don't think the author is saying butches are bad but, good lord, the woman was called that 39 times. There's no good butch or any other butches described in the book as a counter balance so, I don't know, that could rub some people the wrong way. But, and this cracked me up, "the butch" is given the most non-butch name ever: "Mistress Patty".

Yeah, so the book has some good but also some "eh".

It's a Kindle Unlimited read so if you want some BDSM erotica with a romance on steroids this may work.

I had no idea I would really like this.

I liked the story and the characters, it is really fascinating. I have read other stories like this one and found myself relating to the characters. It’s like I was understanding their feeling and that they’re just ordinary people. I highly recommend this book.

It's between 3 and 4. I'll give it 4, because I did read it faster than I thought I would, so that has to count for something! But it's one of those reads where one chapter feels like 5 stars and the chapter after feels like 2 stars. A rollercoaster experience if you will.

The story does have all the elements that you'd want. All the right ingredients are there.

The main characters are excellent. The supporting characters are fine.
The loving girlfriend relationship is relevant and has a story progression on its own.
The BDSM relationship is born of desire and wanting, rather than a traumatic past or sadistic mind.
The sex scenes are well-written and hot.
The D/s relationship is deep and explores more than mere handcuffs and spankings, which is great.
The plot of exploring a girlfriend relationship alongside a Mistress/slave relationship and making that dynamic work is great.
The writing in general is excellent, and the dialogue flows naturally.

It's all there. All that stuff is 5 stars easily.

But then there's also all the stuff that you wish wasn't there....

The main characters often come off as smug and feeling superior, even seeking to humiliate others. There are some scenes at the BDSM clubs where it feels as if they're trying to stage their appearance so everyone else will look at them and be jealous. Such character traits just make you want to punch them in the face, which is annoying, because they're otherwise great characters with many likeable traits!

The plot tends to have many weird ups and downs and it's difficult to know what end you're reading towards. They fairly quickly establish the ideal relationship as girlfriends and Mistress and slave, so the book could end there. It doesn't. Then the friend-who-doesn't-get-BDSM is introduced and you think after she's been converted and seen the light that's BDSM that the book will end there. Nope. Not even half-way through. It's too much feel-good and it doesn't feel as if the ending is particularly end-worthy.

The BDSM relationship errs way too much toward the flimsy symbolism and pocket psychology for my liking. The need to establish ownership by saying: "You're mine!" a thousand times gets dull. The need to psychoanalyze every orgasm and shudder as having some deeper meaning in regards to submission, and the meaning behind everything a collar represents....that all gets a bit annoying after a while, at least for me. But if you like the symbolism-heavy BDSM where a collar isn't just a piece of leather with a buckle, then this is that.

The sex scenes are hot, my dick can vouch for that. But they're also repetitive and there's a lot of them. I feel as if less would have been more. By the end there's a particular hot scene that involves something done to the main character that's out of the blue, and you wonder why the book doesn't explore more of that. It's definitely in the more extreme end of BDSM, but at the same time it stays within the areas of comfort with restraints, punishment, and pleasure. It doesn't really ever go off the deep end, which is a bit disappointing I think.

And then there's some annoying grammar and spelling errors littered throughout the book. Not so many that it takes away from the otherwise excellent writing and dialogue, but enough that you notice and it becomes annoying.

And then there's the cringe-worthy stuff. It has some scenes that just makes you cringe so hard. A particular butch domme who is so one-dimensional that it's embarrassing, followed by a battle between mistresses to make the slave submit to them, which sounds as stupid as it is to read.

So yeah, it's a mixed bag of nuts!

I will however say that in the genre of lesbian BDSM books that also explore a feel-good loving relationship, this is definitely one of the better ones I've read. It balances the romance and BDSM quite nicely.

well well well…

What can I say? This was a wonderful story. It was a bit long and I am surprised I am saying that. Especially, since there wasn’t much angst in the way of the two MC’s coming and staying together.

There was one part that worried me. It wa when Kristen showed up. Emma’s best friend and a former friend of Rachel’s. Both of them crushed on her. And I knew trouble would be afoot. Everything else followed the “mine” theme until then. I think that was a scene that shouldn’t have happened. It did not add anything to the story to me. And then was quickly forgotten. Same with Harold and Ava that visited while Kristen was there. The lame rationale that Emm gave just didn’t work. It broke the story and the singularity of which they came together to add that week in. It was still unnecessary. It made me not as firm a believer in the whole “mine” profession. Perhaps that’s why the author dropped that whole affair afterwards never to be spoken of again.

Sometimes I forgot just how young both of these ladies were. They were both mid 20’s. Although they seemed older, except when they used the occasional “dude” which I really didn’t like. But not too many times.

If you’re into BDSM you will find loads of it here. There was more time spent on scenes than almost anything else. 3/4 of the book was devoted to it. The author did not disappoint. You also saw the progression of the relationship. You actually did feel and the see the love between Emma and Rachel.

I hope for a follow up

This is the best novel I have read to date. I will search out more by Ms Norton as she's a very talented writer.

Damn. I need to find a woman like that.

Awesome. Really great look into how a relationship like this can be. Not too heavy or just touchy-feely, but real connection between two people. A nice intro to the scene without going overboard on the details, so it doesn't feel too hardcore.

Informative

I really liked this book. I've read other books about BDSM relationships but this one was much more in depth. It delved deeply into the emotional aspects of a Domme/sub relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

A D/s HEA story

A book for those curious/interested in the D/s culture. I am not very knowledgeable of that culture, so will not give my opinion on how well the book adheres to the culture. The story was enjoyable and had a HEA.

An imaginative and spicy read. Good explanations of the D/s relationship. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is just the excessive number of typos and some missed formatting. I stuck with it though the reading errors because the story is good enough to want to finish it.

I don't think I can fully express how much I enjoyed reading Mistress Bonita. I absolutely loved Emma and Rachel's relationship, even though they did fall serious very quickly. The way that they were always able to communicate so well was wonderful to see. In particular, I appreciated how Rachel's submission was explained and the balance she maintains in her life. It was also interesting to see subspace described as I don't see it portrayed often in most of the BDSM fiction that I read. All of the sex scenes were extremely hot and well-written. I sometimes get a bit fatigued when there's a large number of sex scenes, but each encounter felt exciting to me.

The only slight issue that I had was the lack of larger conflicts. I would have liked to see them wrestle with maybe one more substantial issue, whether it be an large argument or some event outside of their relationship. Overall though, this was an extremely enjoyable read with refreshing accuracy regarding kink lifestyles.
