Knowing the Living God is the first book in Paul David Washer's Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith series by Media Gratiae. This workbook can be used as a 13-week study for individuals, families, Sunday school classes, small groups, and churches. Only the truths of Scripture, understood with the mind and communicated through doctrine, can provide that sure foundation upon which we should establish our beliefs and our behavior and determine the validity of our emotions and experiences. The study of doctrine is both an intellectual and devotional discipline. It is a passionate search for God that should always lead the student to greater personal transformation, obedience, and heartfelt worship. Knowing the Living God is primarily a biblical study and does not contain much in the way of colorful illustrations, quaint stories, or even theological expositions. It was the desire of the author to provide a work that simply points the way to the Scriptures and allows the Word of God to speak for itself. The great goal of this study is for the student to have an encounter with God through His Word. Founded upon the conviction that Scripture is the inspired and infallible Word of God, this book has been designed in such a way that it is literally impossible for the student to advance without an open Bible before him or her. Paul Washer's previously published work, The One True God, has been massively expanded, revised, and modified--with about one hundred pages of additional material--to become the first book of his Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith series by Media Gratiae. Paul David Washer became a believer while studying at the University of Texas. He completed his undergraduate studies and enrolled at Southwestern Theological Seminary, where he received his Master of Divinity degree. After graduating, he moved to Peru and served there as a missionary.
Paul ministered as a missionary in Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. HeartCry's work now supports over 165 indigenous missionaries in over 26 countries throughout Eastern Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society (www.heartcrymissionary.com). He and his wife Charo have three children: Ian, Evan, and Rowan.
At first, it appears that Washer's approach in creating this study is overly simplistic. There is a great deal of repetition and there is a temptation to think "I already know this." However, as I forged ahead, what I discovered was that the structure of the study demanded meditation on the various, albeit not exhaustive, characteristics of God. Washer devised a workbook that truly helped my walk and spiritual growth...so much so that I believe, in time, I will desire to return to this study and start it again.
This is an amazing Bible study for personal use (could be used in small group, but the workbook style makes it great for individual use). There is no other Bible study that helps you see who God really is, taking you through many Scripture references.
We have used this book in our men's bible study group, I would highly recommend. This book takes you to a deeper and more awed fill reverence of God and all his characteristics and attributes.
New Christian, mature Christian, or any Christian in-between will benefit from this exhaustive study of God's character that barely scratches the surface! Really fantastic small group study. Thank you, Mr. Washer!
All four ladies in my small group were annoyed by the fill-in-the-blank type questions and answers. The teaching was great, the workbook style was not.
