মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য ১৯-শতকীয় বাঙালি কবি মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত কর্তৃক অমিত্রাক্ষর ছন্দে লেখা একটি মহাকাব্য। এটি ১৮৬১ সালে দুই খণ্ডে বই আকারে প্রকাশিত হয়। কাব্যটি মোট নয়টি সর্গে বিভক্ত। মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য হিন্দু মহাকাব্য রামায়ণ অবলম্বনে রচিত, যদিও এর মধ্যে নানা বিদেশী মহাকাব্যের ছাপও সুস্পষ্ট।

Michael Madhusudan Dutt, or Michael Madhusudan Dutta (Bangla: মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত) was a popular 19th-century Bengali poet and dramatist. He was a pioneer of Bengali drama. Madhusudan is widely considered to be one of the greatest poets in Bengali literature and the father of the Bengali sonnet. He pioneered what came to be called amitrakshar chhanda or blank verse (Bangla:অমিত্রাক্ষর ছন্দ). His famous work, মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য, is a tragic epic. It consists of nine cantos and is exceptional in Bengali literature both in terms of style and content. With its publication, the Indian poet distinguished himself as a serious composer of an entirely new genre of heroic poetry, that was Homeric and Dantesque in technique and style, and yet so fundamentally Indian in theme.

From an early age, Dutt aspired to be an Englishman in form and manner. Born to a Hindu landed-gentry family, he converted to Christianity as a young man, to the ire of his family, and adopted the first name Michael. He dreamt of achieving great fame if he went abroad. His adolescence, coupled with the spirit of intellectual inquiry, convinced him that he was born on the wrong side of the planet, and that conservative Hindu society in early nineteenth-century Bengal (and by extension Indian society) had not yet developed the spirit of rationalistic inquiry and appreciation of greater intellectualism to appreciate him. He believed that the "free thinking" and post-Enlightenment West would be more receptive to his creative genius. He composed his early works—poetry and drama—almost entirely in English. In later life he regretted his attraction to England and the Occident. He wrote ardently of his homeland in his poems and sonnets from this period.

বহুকষ্ট করে ডিকশনারি ঘেটে ঘেটে শব্দ গুলোর অর্থ উদ্ধার করে যখন এই মহাকাব্য পাঠ করেন তখন এর প্রকৃত মজাটা মন ভরে উপলব্ধি করবেন। বাংলা সাহিত্যের এক কালজয়ী রচনা। এটা না বুঝলেও পড়ে শান্তি। তবে এখন অনুবাদ কিংবা শব্দগুলোর অর্থ সংযোজিত এই দুই ধরনের সংস্করণই বাজারে পাওয়া যায়।

This book had been on my tbr ever since we read 'Bivishoner proti Meghnad' back in 2018. Fondly remembering the late Atik sir who explained the poem so nicely and made us love it. I don't think I understood it that well on my own, but still it was a good read. Glad I finally picked it up and finished it. Revived the nerd vibes with looking up meaning of words and writing pencil notes and what not!

Well, I really haven't read this book - that is, this translation. I have read the original Bengali - seems that is not listed in goodreads, so adding this. The "epic" was revolutionary in content at its time (and probably still is, given the regressive steps Indian society has been taking in the recent past), and the language and organization in the original was never attempted at before Madhusudan, and was never equalled after him.

মনের খুশীতে ঠ্যালায় ঘোরতে ভাল্লাগে এইজন্য পড়ছিলাম কিন্তু কিছুই বুঝি নাই সব মাথার উপর দিয়া গেছে আর পড়তে গিয়ে কয়টা দাঁত যে ভাঙছে হিসাব করতে পারতেছি না তাই ৫ এ ২ দিলাম। তবে যারা বুঝবে তাদের কাছে হয়তো ভালো লেগেছে!

বড় অসময়ে পড়লাম মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য। বাংলাভাষার মুকুটমণি। মাথার উপর যখন কয়েক টন কাজ জমে থাকে তখন মুকুটমণি খুটিয়ে খুটিয়ে দেখা খুব কঠিন। প্রচণ্ড একটা খচখচানি বুকে। কিন্তু মাথায় ঘুরছে শুধু মেঘনাদ-প্রমিলার প্রেম। কী অসাধারণ প্রেম! প্রেমিক যুদ্ধে যাবে তাই শত্রুশিবির পাড়ি দিল প্রেমিকা। যুদ্ধংদেহী প্রেমিকার বীর্য, সৌন্দর্য আর প্রেমে বিমোহিত শত্রুশিবির! ভীষণ বিদায়ের কঠিন সময় প্রিয়তমা প্রমিলাকে কাঁদতে দেখে মেঘনাদ বলল, "এমন সুন্দর চোখ বিধাতা কি কাঁদার জন্য সৃষ্টি করেছে?" কী অসাধারণ! কী অসাধারণ।

আমি নিশ্চিত বহুকাল মনের গভীরে বাজতে থাকবে, "সৃজিলা কি বিধি, সাধ্বি, ও কমল-আঁখি কাদিতে?"

তৎসম শব্দ বেশি থাকার কারণে বুঝতে কিছুটা সমস্যা হইছে। রামায়ণের কাহিনী যথাযথ না জানাও একটা কারণ। নাম থেকে যদিও জানা যায় মেঘনাদ মারা যাবে তবু তার মৃত্যু আমাকে কষ্ট দিয়েছে।

এই কাহিনির সাথে ট্রোজান ওয়ারের খুব মিল পেলাম। এটা কি আসল রামায়ণের কাহিনির সাথেও সাদৃশ্যপূর্ণ কি না আমার জানা নাই।

বাংলা সাহিত্যের ছাত্র না হলে এটা পড়া হতো নাহ। বই এর মধ্যেই প্রতি চরণের অর্থ বর্ণনা করা ছিল তাই শান্তিতে শেষ করতে পেরেছি। শব্দার্থ বেশ বেশ সাহায্য করেছিল সেবার

I have read the Meghnadbod Kabya in Bangla and can recite the 6th verse from memory. Despite all that, I always found the work to be a difficult read because of the complexity of the form of Bangla that Michael Madhushudhan Dutta uses. Unless you know Sanskrit very well, some of the sentences are hard to understand. the original in Bangla is an amazing piece of literature that is akin to Shakespeare rewriting the Iliad while keeping some of the original words in place. Madhshudhan's Meghnadbod is a twist on Valmiki's Ramayana written about 500 BC and is written from the villain's point of view. Here the villain is the hero. The words flow with elegance and paint such splendid images. This is the only English translation of the epic poem despite the fact that Michael Madhushudhan also wrote in English and was a respected poet in the London literary circles in the late 19h century. I started reading this translation by Clinton Seely today and I am already impressed.
