This is a 2 in 1. Both are great but the 2nd book is especially phenomenal. Story and pacing are superb. Gorgeous drawings and layouts. Coloring is fantastic and sets the mood and tone. Linework is mesmerizing, a style I really like (lots of marking but well-placed). Great action/adventure in the fantasy genre, I like the 2nd volume as it has Thorgal scaling an impenetrable cliff fortress to save his wife, and the drawings throughout this action sequence are one of my favorite sequences I've come across in comics (with some really neat perspectives). The bad guy is well done, sneaky and crafty. As I work my way further into this series I'm coming to realize how great it really is. It's awesome that Cinebook has been publishing these in English translation.

This volume includes a trip to the underworld and a castle siege. The underworld story is trippy and fun, but dark at the same time. The siege story has an antagonist that is unpredictable and creepy. Overall, this is my favorite volume of this series so far.

The third volume, the sixth regular story of Thorgal, and I'm still enjoying it. Yes, I'm starting to have a problem with the same pattern: Thorgal travels with his wife Aaricia, they are somehow separated (she's taken away, he's taken away, she's under a spell...) and Thorgal is trying to get them back together, usually in form of some trials. But still, it has a very nice touch to it and it's well-written. I really like the stories create subsequential series witch each adventure still working well alone.
After Aaricia's presumed death Thorgal becomes a lifeless vagrant, nursed by the one who actually started his torment by her jealousy. But there is a spark of hope so Thorgal will travel to Death itself (and hopefully back). It's a thrilling and nice adventure and this story is followed by The Fall of Brek Zarith, which feels more like extra "conclusion" chapter and it concludes the story and getting started in the second story in the previous (second) book. Either my childhood nostalgia is very strong, or there is something truly good about Thorgal's adventures. Yes, it's not modern fantasy or comics, but for me, it aged well. Thorgal plays on the same adventurous/mystic/mythology strings as Conan, and I love those tones. Especially if they're well played.

Fun, cosmic story. Thorgal travels through a primordial dinosaur swamp to reach Asgard and Niflheim, where he will save his beloved. There's a twist on Orpheus and Eurydice, but the twist isn't that great: Thorgal doesn't love the woman who's helping him save Aaricia, so it doesn't matter that she stays behind in Hel. Still, the art is always great in these books and I liked the swamp creature attacks.

"Beyond the Shadows" follows Thorgal's adventures from "The Black Galley" (as collected in Thorgal, Vol. 2: The Three Elders of Aran) where Thorgal is now a broken man, being cared for Shania, the woman who was the cause of his woes. Thorgal is approached by two men, Wargan and Galathorn, who offer him a chance to find his dead wife, Aaricia. Our hero is tasked with reclaiming the throne of Brek Zarith, a distant empire ruled by an insane king. Thorgal's journey to Brek Zarith takes him to the Second World, a conceptual version of the underworld. This sequence is brilliantly psychedelic, brought to vivid life by Van Hamme's endless creativity.
The second story in this volume, "The Fall of Brek Zarith", follows directly after "Beyond the Shadows". Thorgal accompanies Wargan and Galathorn to take the throne from King Sharder, the mad king who rules Brek Zarith. The kingdom is a vibrant mix of fantasy and Viking lore, creating a disconcerting and surreal feel to the story. The character of King Sharder is fairly complex compared to more archetypical characters Rosiński typically writes, marking a nice change in pace for the series.

The previous chapters had hinted several times that anything is possible at any moment, including the possibility that terrible things can happen. I won't spoil anything but this episode dives into certain consequences of past and future events, and follows through on every thread it introduces. It's nice to see nothing fall to the wayside as every little detail proves to matter in the long run. I enjoy this series a lot so far. The art is great, the story is emotional and the stakes are delightfully high. I am always concerned for everyone we meet, even the titular character. It's full of sorcery and tricks, but everything feels very grounded and true to life. Especially it is true to human nature, and that's what makes it exciting to continue reading. I'm all in!

The apparent death of his wife leaves Thorgal in a state of resignation and self destruction. Taken care of by the person that hurt his family in the first place, they both seek redemption and a new hope as evidence of Aaricia’s existence reach him. This part reads and feels like a middle chapter to the story, setting up things to come.

Best yet of the Cinebook volumes, this includes two linked stories, Beyond the Shadows and The Fall of Brek Zarith, where Thorgal goes on a quest to the underworld and beyond to find his missing wife and child. Gorgeous art, ideal for panel by panel reading on a nice bright screen.

This third volume in Cinebook's English publishing of Belgian writer Jean Van Hamme and Polish artist Grzegorz Rosinski's Thorgal series presents us with albums number 5 (Beyond the Shadows; original title Au-delà des ombres) and 6 (The Fall of Brek Zarith; original title La chute de Brek Zarith) in translation by Luke Spear.
As the first story opens, Thorgal is a wreck, believing his beloved Aaricia to be dead (following the events in The Black Galley in the previous volume). He meets Galathorn, rightful heir to the throne of Brek Zarith, currently usurped by his cruel cousin, Shardar the Almighty. Together with the girl Shaniah, Thorgal journeys beyond the shadows, on a quest for Galathorn, on which he also learns that all is not as hopeless as once he thought.
The second story, following in the footsteps of the first one, sees Aaricia in Brek Zarith and Thorgal’s joining forces with Galathorn, while still acting the lone wolf (to the benefit of all).
All in all, this third volume delivers on the promise of the series and offers two fine instalments. Warmly recommended.

Det här var en av de första fantasy serierna jag läste som blandade in science fiction i allt det magiska. Det var en ögonöppnande upplevelse som gjort det här en mycket minnesvärd serie! Har den åldrats? Absolut, men jag kan inte låta bli att älska den trots detta.
