Uno de mis hijos
Un elegante joven circula una tarde de otoño por Nueva York cuando una desesperada niñita reclama su atención y le suplica que entre en la lujosa mansión de su familia, pues su abuelo se ha puesto repentinamente muy enfermo y necesita ayuda. Anna Katharine Green

She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. Born in Brooklyn, New York, her early ambition was to write romantic verse, and she corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson. When her poetry failed to gain recognition, she produced her first and best known novel, The Leavenworth Case (1878). She became a bestselling author, eventually publishing about 40 books. She was in some ways a progressive woman for her time-succeeding in a genre dominated by male writers-but she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and she was opposed to women's suffrage. Her other works include A Strange Disappearance (1880), The Affair Next Door (1897), The Circular Study (1902), The Filigree Ball (1903), The Millionaire Baby (1905), The House in the Mist (1905), The Woman in the Alcove (1906), The House of the Whispering Pines (1910), Initials Only (1912), and The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow (1917).

Przyjemny klasyczny kryminał. Na tyle krótki, a jednak szczegółowy, by się nie nudzić, chociaż nie ma tu nic wyjątkowego. To raczej nie jest jedna z tych książek, przy których czujesz jakieś silne emocje, ale jeśli lubisz stare kryminały, to możesz sprawdzić tę pozycję. “Kto winien?” dało mi trochę vibe “Siedmiu śmierci Evelyn Hardcastle”, jeśli chodzi o tę tajemniczą warstwę – tu też zdezorientowany główny bohater zostaje wrzucony w fabułę, która go nie dotyczy (akurat u Evelyn okazało się, że go jednak dotyczy, ale uznajmy więc, że przynajmniej początkowo jest to ten sam vibe). Czy dało się odgadnąć mordercę? Mam wrażenie, że jednocześnie tak i nie – raczej nie, jeśli skupilibyśmy się na dowodach, raczej tak, jeśli skupilibyśmy się na intuicji.

This is written in the first person by a Mr. Outhwaite. The opening is of his walking down Fifth Avenue when a little girl calls to him to come into the house, her grandfather wants him. He offers a mild protest as he doesn't know her grandfather who must have meant someone else. No, her grandfather told her to bring in the first man she saw and she will get in trouble if he doesn't come. Mr. Gillespie, the grandfather, collapsed and died shortly after Outhwaite's arrival. When the police - followed by the coroner - are on scene, Mr. Gillespie is determined to have been poisoned.
I was fully primed for a Mr. Gryce/Caleb Sweetwater investigation. Yes, they are the investigators, but they play only a small role in this one. Instead, the narration of Outhwaite leans toward the melodramatic. For sensation fiction, I'd rather read Wilkie Collins or Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Neither of them do detective fiction as well as Anna Katharine Green and I wish she had stayed with what she does fairly well.
As things go, this was enough of a mystery that it kept me reading. Of course I thought I knew who had done it, and for awhile so did Mr. Gryce. We were all wrong until Caleb Sweetwater put his mind to it. I had thought this might be a high 2-stars, but the solution pulled it up into the bottom of the 3-star group.

Jestem okropnie zawiedziona ale niestety wynika to z mojego niedoinformowania. Nie spodziewałam się, że będzie to książka napisana 120 lat temu. Myślałam po tym opisie, że będzie to super przyjemny młodzieżowy kryminał na jakieś 400 stron, a była to 140 stronicowa historia która dawała mi vibe Przedwiośnia. Styl pisania starszych książek niestety nigdy nie był mój i chyba już nie będzie, a sama historia była nieźle pokręcona. Jestem mega zawiedziona ale to też trochę niestety moja wina. Nie powiedziałabym nigdy po tej odkladce i opisie, że to będzie tak wyglądało.

- La autora repite esquema de obras anteriores ("El caso Leavenworth", "El misterio de Gramercy Park"), lo que, para quien tenga la costumbre de analizar la estructura de las novelas que lee, hará que sea demasiado sencillo adivinar lo que va a suceder, y no solo en cuanto a la identidad del personaje que comete el crimen, también la de algún otro.
- Los habituales flashbacks para relatar cosas del pasado, el escaso protagonismo de Gryce, cuya aparición es tan episódica como irrelevante, siendo el protagonista Arthur Outhwaite, quien lleva todo el peso de la narración en una primera persona tan aburrida y monótona como convencional (nada que ver con el humor y la acusada personalidad de la señorita Butterworth en "Gramercy Park").
A mí me ha aburrido. Bastante.

One of my sons is another great mystery by Anna Katharine Green! A wealthy man dies at the hand of some one living in his household. Sure looks like it was one of his three sons. I didn't know until the end of the book!

Another interesting book by this writer. A right mystery until the very end with every son being accused of murder. The one who solves it all was someone who accidentally got involved in the matter. Interesting reading and easy to understand even though written in early 1900s.

Un clásico de la novela negra que atrapa desde la primera página!
Como detalle, decir que la autora fue pionera en el género en su época, siendo admiradores de sus libros Conan Doyle y Wilkie Collins.
Aunque sin ser como Agatha Christie, de la que soy fan absoluta, Green sabe introducirte en la historia sin que te des cuenta. Es una novela para disfrutar y entretener, totalmente recomendable!
PD: La edición es una maravilla, así da gusto leer libros!!

Jestem prostym człowiekiem: jak widzę kryminał napisany na początku poprzedniego stulecia, to nie zadaję żadnych pytań i od razu biorę się do lektury. I w takim wypadku mogę zrobić nawet wyjątek dla wydawnictwa, które bywa moim nieświadomym nemezis (MG miewa w zwyczaju wydawać klasykę w starym tłumaczeniu - co czasem oznacza tekst niepełny).
Ale do rzeczy - co to jest , kto to napisał i jakim cudem słyszę o tym po raz pierwszy?
"Kto winien?" to jedenasty tom serii o śledczym, panu Gryce'u. Sam cykl rozpoczęła powieść "The Leavenworth Case" w 1877 roku, a ich autorka - Anne Katharine Green stworzyła bohaterów, których możemy nazwać prototypami Poirot czy panny Marple.
I faktycznie - podobieństwa gdzieś tam są. Śmiało powiedziałabym, że "Kto winien?" najbardziej przypomina powieści Christie przez oddanie pierwszych skrzypiec osobom zainteresowanym, a śledczych przesuwa do roli komentatorów, ale niekoniecznie aktywnych uczestników. Pan Bryce czy Caleb Sweetwater raczej obserwują wydarzenia niż starają się samodzielnie rozwiązać zagadkę.
Oczywiście, taki zabieg powoduje, że książka popada w melodramatyczne tony. Kryminał dzieje się niejako przy okazji, a nie jako wątek główny. Może to być irytujące, szczególnie jeśli zapomni się jak dawno napisano tę powieść. To dopiero prototypy kryminału, pierwsze wstawki zanim gatunek na dobre się rozwinął, ba! napisane jeszcze przed powstaniem "Dziesięciu przykazań..." Knoxa.
Czy da się to jeszcze czytać? Tak. Z pewnością przydałby się tu jakiś wstęp redakcyjny dający kontekst do lektury (ale, cóż, tego raczej nie oczekiwałabym od wydawnictwa MG), bo przeciętny czytelnik może się zagubić albo zupełnie może go ta książka odrzucić.
Czy polski czytelnik dostanie po polsku pozostałe powieści Green? Cóż, na początku XX wieku wydano po polsku jeszcze cztery inne powieści Green, więc można mieć nadzieje na ich wznowienie (na resztę bym raczej nie liczyła, bo finansowo się to raczej nie opłaca - ale cóż, obym się myliła). Ja zamierzam tak czy siak sięgnąć po inne jej książki, choćby i po to, by prześledzić jak kiedyś pisano kryminały.

Honestly, I had never heard of this author who lived from 1846-1935. I saw a story about her in the news and learned that she was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America who has been called "the mother of the detective novel."
Being a mystery genre lover, I had to try one of her books and this one was highly recommended. What fun! I love the vocabulary and terms of speech of the day. The lifestyle of the wealthy in the period was so interesting. Multi-generational, all living in the same household in what I envisioned as a mansion.
The story itself was so intriguing and I loved how things were laid out for the reader. Clues, many of which turned out to be red herrings, were fun to run with for a while and perfectly plausible. The characters and the interactions between them was so interesting to see, especially in the period in which the story takes place.
I would definitely recommend this book and I for one will be picking out which of the author's other books to read next!

Leído entre marzo y abril de 2017. "Uno de mis hijos" es una novela para leer con tranquilidad y disfrutar de cada una de las palabras que la componen. La historia está contada en primera persona desde el punto de vista de un joven abogado que de manera inesperada presencia el fallecimiento de la víctima. A mí lo que me ha gustado de la edición es cómo los editores de "dÉpoca" han destacado las letras capitales con las que se inician cada capítulo y las notas a pie de página con las que siempre se aprende alguna que otra anécdota u hecho histórico de interés. to powieść, na kartach której bohaterowie mierzą się z rozwiązaniem kryminalnej zagadki. zmarły w tajemniczych okolicznościach ojciec pozostawia dość spory majątek, który powinien przejść we władanie jednego z trzech synów. sytuacja pozornie prosta fabularnie przynosi jednak pewne zaskoczenie - mamy tu do czynienia z wielowarstwową refleksją na temat winy, jej zakorzenienia w pojęciu rodziny i psychologiczne napięcie. narracja kojarząca się z klasyką kryminału zagłębia się w psychikę każdego z bohaterów, uwypuklając również społeczno-zewnętrzne skutki ich osobistych problemów. w tak niewielkiej objętości zmieściło się tu mnóstwo dobrego!

As melodramatic as Green's romances are, there are always keen shades of realism to her fancy. Dispite the bones of the romance that entangles this novel's plot being sheer nonsense, simultaneously, there is something so poignant about her depiction of loving an addict, who can't love anything more than the drugs. Her forgiveness for human frailty feels genuine and uplifting, filled with Victorian charity, much missing in our modern Era.

What a story! Perhaps a bit old fashioned, but it was fascinating. I enjoyed watching the detective work moving through the story, and seeing the characters drawn throughout the writing.

I found this story much harder to get into than other books in this series. It was much longer before I was pulled into the story. Its written well and the ending is good. But not one of my favorites of this series.

I always enjoy Anna Katherine Green. This tale is as expected, well written and interesting. Although it is a bit 'heavy handed' with the melodrama, so says this old guy.

Primera vez que leo algo de esta autora y primera vez que leo algo de la editorial deÉpoca. Y tengo que decir que me ha gustado muchísimo esta editorial y todo el trabajo que hay detrás de sus libros, porque me ha parecido un puntazo que los libros vengan acompañados de un marca páginas y de una postal con las imágenes de las portadas del libro. Y porque se nota que es una editorial de calidad.
Respecto al libro decir que en un principio yo lo que buscaba leer era un libro de Agatha Christie, pero luego recordé que tenía desde hace muchísimos años este libro ,y cuando vi que a esta autora se la consideraba la predecesora de Christie en el mundo de las novelas de misterio, fue que opte por este volumen. Como novela tengo que reconocer que me ha resultado muy irregular, ha tenido cosas que me han gustado mucho y cosas que me han decepcionado, puesto que me esperaba mucho más de este libro.
Para empezar, las primeras tres cuartas partes de la novela se me han hecho muy difíciles de leer porque me ha resultado muy, muy lentas , excesivamente para mi gusto. La prosa de la autora me ha parecido, a ratos, muy lenta, quizás porque tenia que estar pendiente de muchos detalles, lo que me parecía que la relanzantizaba aún más la narrativa de la novela, que tarda bastante en despegar pese a lo prometedor de su argumento. Además la cadena de hechos y descubrimientos que componían la historia me ha parecido, en muchos casos, muy poco creíbles , ya que sucedían de forma providencial para hacer avanzar la trama y la investigación.
Además me han faltado (o fallado) la caracterización de la inmensa mayoría de los personajes, no me ha sido fácil conectar o sentir simpatía real con casi ninguno, solo con uno de ellos, y con el propio narrador de la historia, Outwhite. También me ha escamado un poco que al igual que la narración, la mayor parte de la investigación recae en Outwhite. Realmente de los dos investigadores que aparecen en esta historia, solo uno de ellos resulta decisivo en la trama por lo que descubre, y esto solo ocurre hasta el final. Por último señalar que el desenlace de la historia resulta de lo más tópico y convencional, el/los culpable/s no resultan para nada sorprendentes.
Pero no todo es malo en esta historia, ni mucho menos. La prosa de la autora es muy depurada y elegante. El último cuarto de la historia es realmente adictivo de leer y en general, el ritmo narrativo de la novela tiene muy buen pulso y esta muy bien construido, con abundantes giros de la trama que mantienen al lector pegado a las páginas del libro. Todo lo contado tiene sentido, cada detalle encaja con la misma perfección que el mecanismo de un reloj, sin que queden cabos sin atar cuando se termine la historia. Por último, es muy interesante el prologo que hay al inicio de la edición española, donde se narran los orígenes de la novela de detectives.
“Uno de mis hijos” es una novela que resulta interesante de leer para los amantes de la literatura de detectives y misterios. Es un libro hijo de su tiempo, ciertamente, pero también es pionero en ciertos aspectos esenciales para las novelas de crímenes e investigaciones tal y como ahora las conocemos. Solo por eso, pese a sus fallas, es un libro recomendable de empezar.

El último cuarto de la historia es realmente adictivo de leer y en general, el ritmo narrativo de la novela tiene muy buen pulso y esta muy bien construido, con abundantes giros de la trama que mantienen al lector pegado a las páginas del libro. Todo lo contado tiene sentido, cada detalle encaja con la misma perfección que el mecanismo de un reloj, sin que queden cabos sin atar cuando se termine la historia. Por último, es muy interesante el prologo que hay al inicio de la edición española, donde se narran los orígenes de la novela de detectives.
“Uno de mis hijos” es una novela que resulta interesante de leer para los amantes de la literatura de detectives y misterios. Es un libro hijo de su tiempo, ciertamente, pero también es pionero en ciertos aspectos esenciales para las novelas de crímenes e investigaciones tal y como ahora las conocemos. Solo por eso, pese a sus fallas, es un libro recomendable de empezar.
