The townsfolk of Black Dog wrapped themselves in that sentiment like a security blanket. Being part of the tight-knit, small town shielded them from the horror that plagued the evening news.
And then something happened.
It happened fast. People got sick. People got violent. People died.
But the hunger lived on.
Day Three: The Smoker
Black Dog is sealed off from the world. The hunger has ravaged the town and left survivors in fear. Help has arrived, but are they there to help the survivors or to help hide the truth behind the disaster? And, oh yeah, someone is setting fires in Black Dog.
The Last Five Days is a five-part short story series that should be read in the following order: Day One: Luther's Diner Day Two: Evil Urges Day Three: The Smoker Day Four: Brothers Fight (Coming Soon) Day Five: Judas Kiss (Coming Soon)
Paul Seiple is a best-selling author of the Project Specter Mystery Series and the Great Dying Post-Apocalyptic Series. His roots are in the horror and thriller genres. Occasionally, he will take a wrong turn and end up in other genres like science fiction.
Outside of creating dark stories, Paul is influenced by Crystal Pepsi, New Coke, Van Halen III (The Gary Cherone Minute), and Windows Vista. He believes Paul Stanley’s ’78 solo record was the best and misses Saved by the Bell: The College Years tremendously. Paul would like for you to be in his Myspace Top 8, but sadly, he can’t remember his password. But all is not lost.
The living, uninfected population in Black Dog has diminished to a handful of souls including Winston Fleming and Melanie Carpenter, and it is only a matter of time before there is no one left. The power has failed and they are unable to leave the town to seek help. The town is quarantined.
The private military which has surrounded and contained the town, is under the direction of General Thomas Hendricks, and has imported some high-octane doctors and scientists to try and develop a cure for the deadly virus. What the new doctors don’t realize is just how deadly the virus is nor that it was deliberately developed by one of their own - Dr. Robert Salk – a biological weapon.
The victims of the virus, once infected, turn on their own friends and family in a violent rage which would create havoc in wartime with enemy combatants. The development of this new weapon was known as The Judas Project. The doctors do not realize that they will never leave Black Dog alive because the virus is mutating under its own volition to try and preserve its host (the body of its victims.)
This 3rd installment in The Last Five Days series reveals how and why Black Dog was chosen for destruction. The story is quite exciting, moving along at a fast pace with sympathetic, good characters and really mean, bad guys. I’m looking forward to the next part.
