Ciara makes another appearance, four years after her abduction and torture and near death in SCAR TISSUE (BK 1).
She is still seeing a therapist as the panic attacks and nightmares continue. Her relationship with David is on hold for now ... she doesn't want him to see her scars .. the ugly words that were cut into her skin.
She has a small scar on her brain, and that has caused Ciara a 'gift'. When she touches the flesh of a dead person, she can see the last few minutes of that person's life. She's still not sure if it is a gift or a curse.
Now living and working in New York City, a new serial killer is making the news. Young blonde teenage girls are being abducted .. but not for ransom. They are held for days, even weeks, while the killer slowly bleeds them to death.
Ciara knows she shouldn't, but she calls one of the detectives that worked her case. These killings in so many ways are very much like what happened to her. She wants to help even though her therapist has warned her not to get involved.
In helping the police, more people will learn what her secret is .... but will this help identify the killer? Will the killer set his eyes on Ciara and make her a victim again?
This is a terrific follow up to SCAR TISSUE. The characters are solidly written. I really liked that Ciara speaks more about what's going on in her head. David is a good match for her. He's willing to wait even though her obsession over scars doesn't bother him at all. And I really loved how he proved this to her. Cynthia Nanos, as the detective who believes in Ciara's talent is tenacious, and willing to do what it takes to solve this case... even if it means the end of her career.
There is no hint of other books to follow, but I do hope to see more in the future.
