Alternate cover edition of ASIN B01EJZKAX8

Izara Torvik thought her life was over the moment that her father sent her and her twin brother to a boarding school in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. She soon discovers that the school is not as ordinary as she thought and finds herself thrown into a battle against her inner demons that only have one desire...the desire to kill.

Once my body stopped trembling, I picked myself up. It felt strange, my feet seemed to fall much lighter on the ground than normal. My head also felt a bit fuzzy. I turned and froze as I caught myself in the reflection of a full-length mirror. I glided forward to get a closer look. My eyelids had sunken into my skull and my eyes were red! I reached up to touch my pallid skin only to gawk at my hands. My fingernails had been replaced with dark, black claws.
“I’m a monster,” I hissed.
My eyes flashed up to meet my reflection once again and soon my clawed hands were the least of my worries. Two black, very large things were moving ever so slightly, blocking the reflection of the rest of the room. I looked over my shoulder to find large, black feathered, wings...

Sometimes it's nice to take a break from my horror books. This book was YA, and more fantasy, but it also had demons and stuff. So that's cool.
I found this book in a Facebook Group. I joined the Facebook Group for this book for a giveaway, but stayed for the entertainment. I don't read this genre often, but after taking the online quiz to find out what my sign was, I had to read this book. (Sidenote: I m a Sapphire/ Philosopher if I remember correctly).
So YA can be fun. Reading about teens. I was a teen many, many, moons ago. I recall what it was like waiting to be asked to a school dance and all that jazz, so I found that part of the book to be fun.
In this book, we get to know twins Iz and Kain. Both likeable, at first. They discover the have 'powers' which I won't detail because spoilers. Then they keep it secret. They tell nobody. I found that crazy. If I had powers I would rant and rave about them until I was deemed mentally unwell and institutionalized. But that's just me.
Then lots of story happens. And I don't want to say too much, but by the time the book ended,I absolutely hated one of the main characters.
Fantasy is a nice escape from time to time. If fantasy is your thing, I recommend you join the Facebook group, take the quiz, and read this book

Which is worse dreaming you are a monster or dreaming you killed someone? Imagine putting them together...

Strange things begin to happen when twins Izara and Kain go to boarding school in this young adult supernatural suspense novel. Things start off a bit slow but pick up and the ending will knock your socks off. (a wee tad bit of a cliffhanger - ***scoots off to look for the next book)

There is so much packed into this novel from normal teen angst to mystery & intrigue and of course a smidgen of love. 4/5 stars

There is more to Izara and Kain than meets the eye. These twins are just learning about powers they both possess, but can’t even begin to understand.
To make matters worse, they are also learning that there is much more to their boarding school than meets the eye. It has a dark past, somehow linked to the twins’ powers.
Izara and Kain must learn more about their powers and their school if they are to survive...but their quest for knowledge may prove lethal itself.
This is Tabi Slick’s debut novel, and in subtle ways it shows: there is a bit of repetition here and there, for example. These are only minor issues, however. The author does a brilliant job of creating this world, and her vivid descriptions bring the characters to life. The pace of the story starts slowly, but it builds to a crescendo, leaving the reader wanting more!
Tabi Slick is certainly an author to watch: this is a strong debut, and there is certainly even better to come!

I really enjoyed this! I originally discovered author Slick through her Beaumont Bros Circus Mysteries (which are fab), and decided to take a chance on her YA work, as well. And I'm do glad I did! The mysterious school in the middle of nowhere, the teenage drama interspersed with dark, otherworldly powers? Yes, please. Overall, a fun read that will keep you turning pages!

This is an interesting start to a series with a lot of mystery!

The Writing:
I quite enjoyed the writing!
We read from Izara's POV all time but at the same time it didn't felt that way.

The Story:
This story was much darker than I spected, much scarier if you want and mixed a bunch of things.
If you like:
•Demons/Angels stuff
•Superpowers
•Story played between past and present being in both times
•Romance but not being the main thing
•Mysteries
•Strong family relationship
Then I think this is for you because this book has all that.
I just think this is a book you need to discover and whatever I might say may be a hint of something.
I enjoyed the story, I thought it was quite original and I hope in next books we can see more of the world as well as understand everything more because the author left some mysteries to be solved...

The Characters:
Izara: I liked her though she sometimes was too impulsive I liked her.
Kain: He was I think the kind of mystery dark guy, moody that is good deep down but prefers to be alone. I liked him. He was more impulsiva than Izara sometimes but then roles would invert.
I just want to say I love these brothers. They compliment each other so well, when one is being impulsive the other is the reasonable voice; they helped each other; they protected each other; it was just a great relationship. I really value how important it is for both characters and for the story.
Lee: OMG! Can I have a Lee for myself? Such a sweet, intelligent, sexy pack! He was supportive and understanding. I just hope so so much that one day I find someone like him!
Kia: I liked her,I'm not really fond of her but I don't hate her.
Chuck: He was frustrating, annoying and easy to hate!

Overall, I enjoyed this book, I enjoyed the characters though I don't think they had a big character development; I enjoyed the story, thought it had many interesting line plots that I enjoyed; I would like to read more because I need to find out what happens!

Had we truly becoe the demons that hunted our dreams?

Tabi Slick's first entry into her Tompkin's School series is an engaging YA adventure that evolves into a kinetic mystery with powerful paranormal elements. After a somewhat tentative start in which Slick devotes a lot to establishing her cast, the story picks up the pace becoming quite epic in its scope with plenty of action.

Her protagonist, Izara Torvik, is a young woman who is at once vulnerable and wide eyed, having been thrust from a cloistered and privileged New York existence into a totally unfamiliar Oklahoma environment. Along with her twin brother Kain, she has to find reserves of strength and resourcefulness fairly quickly in order to face the powerful and violent forces that reside within the Tompkin's School. Her growth, in particular, is appealing and satisfying to watch.

Slick's grasp of tension and mood is attractive and she is able to infuse an unpredictability into her narrative that keeps you guessing right up to the climax.

Tabi Slick's series crackles with potential and I'm really keen to see where it goes in subsequent entries. Tompkin's School For The Extraordinarily Talented is a gem.

I think Ms. Slick has created a wonderful young adult work of fiction, with twists and turns aplenty. The characters are three dimensional, the plot has a continuous, steady, pace, and the imaginative element the author weaves into her story is unquestionably one of the most creative I have seen in a very long time. I especially enjoyed the strength of her female lead; Izzy, a great role model for young women today. I look forward to seeing more from Ms. Slick in the future. Congratulations on a job well done.

This was the first book I've read by the author, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the fantasy elements of the story, and how the main characters were coming to learn of their supernatural abilities. While I found myself cheering them on in their attempts to defeat evil, I couldn't help but be a bit mortified by the darkness that embodied them as well, which they seemingly had no control over. I know I'm showing my age here, but how can you not love a story that mentions Buck Owens? I must admit that this novel could use another edit as there are quite a few typos, and a few random sentences here and there that are in bold font (it didn't appear to be intentional as there was no rhyme or reason). That being said, it didn't deter from a pleasurable reading experience (some examples added to Amazon review). I'm looking forward to the next book in this series to find out what happens to the twins and those who are constantly trying to harm them.

Some of my favorite lines from the book:

"His pallid skin clung to his skull as if it were about to fall off..."

"I fell to my side as liquid bone slithered up my spine before hardening..."

Tompkin’s School For the Extraordinarily Talented is the first book in the Supernatural Academy Trilogy by Tabi Slick. This is a very intriguing young adult paranormal academy story, with fantastic world building, drama, mystery, and adventure. This is my first book by Tabi Slick, so I wasn’t really sure of what to expect going in- but have come out the end really happy to have stumbled on this wonderfully original pearl- it has left me really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
When twins Izzy and Kain are packed off to boarding school little do they suspect how much they are about to discover. There is so much more to them, and their new boarding school- their adventure has just begun. With plenty of supernatural elements, dramatic developments, mystery and suspense- Ms. Slick has cleverly blended them all into this captivating read!
The end of the book leaves us wanting for more- so I’m off to hunt down the next book!

Thank you, Tabi Slick!

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Fantasy

My Rating: 4 stars

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Tompkin’s School: For The Extraordinarily Talented by Tabi Slick is a thrilling YA paranormal book. It follows the story of Izara Torvik when she moves to a boarding school in Oklahoma with her twin brother Kain. They soon discover that there is something sinister about the school and find something weird happening to them in the midst of it.

The book starts a bit slow but soon becomes very intriguing and mysterious. The writing is simple and good. I liked that the book was organized and well paced.

Plot

The history of the school forms the base of the plot. It is a very original concept and I loved it! The time-travelling bit was a bonus. It fits perfectly in the book and doesn’t distract us from the plot. I also liked how the supernatural element slowly starts to come in and the creatures are different than the typical paranormal. However, I found it weird that the characters got comfortable with the idea of killing so soon and were not freaking out.

The mystery is one of the key elements of the book. It made the book exhilarating and enjoyable to read. The things that kept happening to Izzy and Kain made me want to keep reading and know more. The pace of the mystery is good. The plot is unpredictable and the suspense keeps us eager to know more.

The book did seem a little cliche at some points. The romance felt irrelevant and present just for the sake of it. The book seems light-hearted enough in the beginning but starts getting dark and violent halfway through. It was sudden and felt a little out of place.

Characters

The characters were simple and cool. I liked the main character Izzy. She is confident and quirky, a contrast to her brother Kain. There is also a little bit of diversity in the book.

Conclusion

This book is overall a very enjoyable and exciting read. It had a lot of different elements combined and was different than any YA book I’ve read before. The suspense and mystery kept me reading. The book gets quite intense towards the end and ends on a cliffhanger that leaves the readers wanting more.

I would say that this is an excellent debut by the author. It is a good start to a promising series and I highly recommend it!

Izara and Kain are sent away from home by a father who apparently gave more credit to his new wife than to his own children. They are sent off to Tompkin's and this is the last we hear about the parental figures in their lives. Ok, I am ok with that... they make friends, they fall in love, they go to school, parties after and they discover a new side of their personalities. They discover they have a new type of connection, a pull towards the unnatural, even the evil. Here is where I got lost.

The story is very good, with a dose of mystery that keeps your mind connected to the twins' story. But at some point there are so many unnecessary paragraphs that break the link with what's really important. Just to give you an example without going into details: during the night, the twins do something unimaginable, but then they go to school and life goes on. I noticed that to the end of the book, the focus on the real action is more and more intense. And the ending? Unbelievable!!! What was that?? (Oh, I'm saying this in a good way absolutely!)

Except Izara and Kain, all other characters are either too normal or too mysterious. We have Lee and Kia who are in love with them; we have Amadeus and later on Chuck who are surrounded by a fog of uncertainty. I have yet to decide if these two, together with our main characters are good or bad. I am not sure who the good guys in the story are. I'd say for sure Lea and Kia, but who knows what the next book will offer?

Even if I am a bit frustrated by the ending and the fact that I don't have the slightest clue on how the story will go on, I loved it. It made me go to the next page and then the next one, it left me hanging till part 2. Which is good, after my standards. Read it, but by the entire series. Or at least book one and 2 so you won't feel as I did :)

Tompkin's School (For The Extraordinarily Talented Book 1) by Tabi Slick

Izara and her twin brother are sent to a boarding school in Oklahoma. It is very different than they imagined, and it will be an adjustment. Soon she discovers it is not an ordinary school, and there are secrets revealed. Izara finds herself in a situation that she never expected, never thought possible. Will she do the right thing even though everything seems to be going against her?

Izara is very likable, she is a teen trying to fit in to a new environment. Then she discovers the secrets the school holds and finds herself in an unexpected and unbelievable situation. Watching how she handles this, and what she must do was intense. A true page turner. Overall I found Tompkin's School to be a fast paced original story, with drama, danger, mystery, supernatural (forces) and a hint of romance. I recommend to Y/A and Adult readers as well.

This is a really good story with lots of twists and turns. I'm very keen to read the next instalment! The characters are relatable and very engaging. There are a few regular typos in the text, which I found annoying; they didn't really detract from the story at all, but I am a stickler for those things. Even so, I'm not going to let that put me off. I want more of Tompkin's Academy!

Tompkin's School For the Extraordinary Talented is a unique and super exciting YA. It follows Izara Torvik, a strong and funny girl who sees her life changing when she is sent with her twin brother to a boarding school in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma.
She quickly realizes that neither she nor the school are exactly what they seem to be. Izara will fight with her inner demons and with the deep desire of kill.

I must confess that in the first pages of this book I was a little confused. Aside from starting slowly, the initial events did not captivate me. However, when we begin to discover some weird things, everything becomes more interesting. It's a book full of plot twists that makes us suspect of everything. It is quite mysterious but always with his YA side that I like so much.
The story is much more "darker" than we are led to believe at first, but it is so well developed and worked that you will be very admired and intrigued with the course that the book follows.
The main action is undoubtedly a super original and interesting idea. I would never remember something like this, it is so different of what we are used to.
The writing is simple but it allows us to feel that we are there living the moment with the characters.

I was not expecting this to be such an addictive read. It was a great surprise.

I am very happy with this reading. I think if I had to change something in this book, I would only change the cover, which I do not like very much. I'm sure the book would attract a lot more people if the cover was other.

My rating is 4.1 out of 5.
I recommend this book to all who love suspense and paranormal YA books! It's a great choice!

MY REVIEW:
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the story of twin siblings, Izara (Izzy) and Kain as they discover their supernatural abilities at a boarding school in Oklahoma. It's told from Izzy's point of view. When they arrive, Izzy has no idea the changes they will go through, the challenges they will face, or the secrets they must uncover. They must juggle living a normal teenage life and coming to terms with their new, incredible, powers.

This is a unique story, and I'm intrigued to see how it all wraps up in the end. It's interesting to have, what seems to be, teenage anti-heroes in a genre that typically is saturated with nothing but glamorous heroes. I suppose that's yet to be seen, though.

Slick's writing can be a bit disjointed at points, though, and sometimes hard to follow. The vision and dream sequences are frequent and the reader isn't given a source or reason for them, so it begins to feel overwhelming.

This is a tale of transferring to a new high school, in a new place and let’s not forget that it is a boarding school as well. This tale starts with a landing plane and setting off to a new, unknown place and the one who pick’s the new passengers to take them to their new home, is none other than a local policeman who takes them to stay with him and his family for the night, before hitching a ride with his son to the new school the next day. While looking out of the car window, a realisation hits that the new school is in the middle of nowhere and that there will be nothing interesting there.

On arrival there is something a bit unusual and off about the new school and from driving up to the gates, the place and the people within it are astounding, but not all for the best reasons, being shown around, normality resurfaces with the meeting of roommates, finding out what the school year will look like and who the teachers will be.

As everyone at the school starts to settle in, that things are not as they seem and the people are not who they are perceived to be, and the fact that one of them has black wings and shifts into a demon on the full moon, is a lot to handle on top of everything else.

there are twists and turns in this adventure, but will the ties that they develop last the distance, or will this school break those bonds? There are discoveries to find, decisions to be made and mysteries to uncover, how can anyone still maintain who they are as they get through these new challenges and stay in control of the darkness within?

You can only find out by reading the book and it will keep you guessing about what will happen all the way to the end.

Description:
I thought my life was over the moment I was sent to this boarding school. I had no idea how right I was.
Now I've got black wings and each full moon I shift into a demon with some serious firepower. Oh, and did I mention something's trying to use my powers for evil?
I can feel the darkness surround me whenever I close my eyes, making me want to do the unthinkable. I have to resist. To defeat the shadows that threaten to destroy this school.
But how can I remain in control when my soul wants to be reckless?
If you like BR Kingsolver, Leia Stone, Jenetta Penner, K.F. Breene, and Krista Street you'll be thoroughly entertained by this original page-turner.
My Review:
This is the first book I’ve read by Tabi Slick. Tompkin’s School is about Izara and her brother Kain who are sent to a boarding school in Oklahoma because they clash with their father’s new mistress. At this point Izzy and Kain seem perfectly normal teens, but when they get to Tompkin’s school strange things begin to happen to both of them. I loved that the plot was so fast moving yet didn’t feel rushed, and I got to enjoy this thrilling ride with the twins and their friends. Can’t wait for the next one!

Overall I really enjoyed the book. First person narration is difficult to pull off well but I think the author did a pretty good job with it and keeping me engaged where it didn't feel a challenge.

The readability and pacing was good, and there was lots of mystery. The boarding school in the middle of nowhere appeals to my inner Harry Potter fan, and I liked the choice of such a unique setting for a school (since usually it's England, the northeast, California, or not even in our world). The character interactions felt pretty good and none of the characters came across as a Mary Sue. I also liked the twist of the heroes are the monsters/demons (or are they?). A unique and fresh approach to topics that are fairly common in YA.

I think my biggest frustration is that I would have liked more answers at the end of the novel. You get some, but you're learning along with Izara and Kain, so you still don't quite have a solid idea of what's going on or what they need to accomplish (besides fighting whatever their inner/literal demons want). I would have liked a better understanding of the history of the world and how it's led to where Izara and Kain are now in this book, although I expect it's coming in future books.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

“Tompkin’s School” was one of those books which you can’t stop reading once you pick it up. Twins Izzy and Kain, having just lost their mother, have seemingly lost their father’s affection as well as both are now sent to a boarding school deep in Oklahoma. None too thrilled with the forced move, brother and sister soon experience a strange feeling of belonging to a new place, but that’s only the beginning: once they turn sixteen, the oddest transformations start taking place and Izzy and Kain need to get to the bottom of this and fast.
I loved that the plot was so fast moving yet didn’t feel rushed, and I got to enjoy this thrilling ride with the twins and their friends. Brooding, gothic atmosphere, an outstanding setting, intriguing characters and mysterious history of the establishment made me turn pages faster, yet I didn’t want the story to end. And of course, I got extremely attached to Izzy and her brother and I love it when books do that to me, make me feel like I personally know characters and can root for them. A great read, which I would highly recommend to all fans of the genre. And I can’t wait to start book 2!

Tompkin’s School: For the Extraordinarily Talented (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 1) by Tabi Slick
4 Stars

What happens when you find out that your nightmares are actually real? This becomes true for Izara and Kain when they are sent to a boarding school in the middle of Oklahoma. The twins soon realize that the school is keeping a deadly secret, it is not everything that it claims to be. Powers emerge that they didn’t know they possessed. They need to unravel the mysteries of the school if they want to stay alive and time is running out.

This is a debut novel for this author and I think it’s a good start. There is some fine tuning that needs to be done but I think that she is an author to look out for in the future. I found the story to be unique and intriguing. The author never really explains exactly what the twins are and this is one of the things that kept me interested. I liked the characters a lot though I think there needs to be a little more character development in book two. I believe this will be an interesting trilogy and I’m looking forward to reading part two.

What can a pair of twins do in the country side of Oklahoma when sent to a school far from home? They can find a truth about themselves that will change their world forever in Tabi Slick’s book “Tompkin's School- For The Extraordinarily Talented”!

Oklahoma is so far from New York City for a set of twins, a boy and girl, who lived their whole lives in the urban sprawl, now need to adjust to the wide open plans of the Tompkin’s School. But this school hides deadly secrets the siblings find themselves caught up in. Supernatural forces come barreling into their lives creating a fantastical change that there is no getting away from. Will they survive it, will others survive them now that the other worldly forces have taken ahold of the twins?

Slick creates a world of fantasy that has the reader experiencing such wonders not found in other fantasy reads. Her imagination is fantastical and brings to life characters and settings that keeps the reader enthralled with the story. This is the first book of a trilogy and my expectations are high for the remaining two books. I recommend readers to pick up this first book and start enjoying it!

Tompkin's School: For The Extraordinarily Talented (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 1)
By Tabi Slick
5 out of 5 stars

The story Tompkin's School: For The Extraordinarily Talented (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 1) by Tabi Slick is a wonderful book that I loved reading. It hooked me in from the beginning and I didn’t want to put it down until I had read the final page. The main character finds that they can shift into a demon and that someone is trying to use their powers for evil. The book has mystery and danger. The story is written in such a way that I could feel the emotions and conflict that comes from the main character. The author does an amazing job of weaving a tale that had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. In addition to the main character, there are also secondary ones, each with their part to play. There are those with an evil agenda and also those who are helpful and friendly. Don’t miss out on a story that is interesting, intriguing, and entertaining. I would highly recommend reading it.

I came across the box set for this series through an ad and thought it looked intriguing, so I picked it up. This review is for book one.

Tompkin’s School: For The Extraordinarily Talented starts with twins Izara and Kain shipped off to boarding school in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma after a falling out with their father. Soon after, they begin having strange, horrifying dreams that breach reality, as they manifest powers they never knew they had.

I’ll admit there were times I was a bit confused on who exactly the bad guys were (them or the secret society hidden within the school, or perhaps all of them?) judging by Izara and Kain’s actions and emotions towards the things they’d done—some of which was jaw dropping. But still, I found the story interesting and continued to turn the page in my quest to figure out exactly who Izzy and Kain are, and what is ultimately going on. All in all, it’s not a bad read, and I’ll be continuing on to the next book to further delve into the mystery behind the school and the twins.

Tompkin’s School: For The Extraordinarily Talented (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 1) by Tabi Slick

5-Stars

Tompkin’s School: For The Extraordinarily Talented (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 1) by Tabi Slick was an extraordinary read. First off, I loved that the setting for this story was in Oklahoma. The author did an excellent job of bringing it to life in this fictional novel. She gave the various scenery great detail and made it easy to visualize.

Secondly, I loved main characters Izzy and Kain. Their names were unique and easy to use. They were both fun and I loved their sibling bond. The story was told more from Izzy's point of view but she allowed both characters to really shine. I enjoyed watching them grow and develop as the storyline progressed. They endured quite a lot after moving to the Academy. If you are looking for an excellent paranormal/young adult novel, this is it. I highly recommend it.

Tompkin’s School for the Extraordinarily Talented (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 1) by Tabi Slick

This book is the first in the supernatural young adult series about twins, Izara and Kain, as they enter a new boarding school in Oklahoma. Secrets unfold and there are secrets uncovered about the school and those that attend it now, as well as those in the distant past. This book had a little of everything. There were supernatural abilities, mind control, shape shifting creatures, inner demons, time traveling, mystery, drama, danger and a bit of young love. The story was original and not what I expected overall. The author described the characters environment, thoughts, powers, and feelings in great detail. There was a lot going on to keep you interested and turning the pages.

Tompkin's School: For the Extraordinarily Talented by Tabi Slick is the first book in A Supernatural Academy Trilogy. Welcome to boarding school for twins Izzy and Kain and their new lives. This is a book with supernatural, paranormal, and a story of growing up. I really enjoyed the story, but the ending left a lot of unanswered questions which I hope to see answered in the other books in the series. I am always trying to find books to recommend to a younger audience and I think this will do well to capture their attention and keep them wanting more. I enjoyed the twins as well as other characters in the book. They are realistic but also a bit compelling as they develop in the book. I like the twins have their own stories and an overlap. They are developed individually and this could lead the series in interesting directions. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I knew the moment I saw the cover of this novel that I just had to read it and find out what this world is all about. I found out this is Tabi Slick’s first novel after I had finished it and I must say this is a very good and well thought out, exciting, and adventurous read that you would think that this is an author who has been writing forever. I am so excited to run and check out the other books in the series now!

In this novel we meet Izara and Kain, twins that are figuring out that their world is not what it seems and that their magic is only just beginning to come to fruition. These two are settling into a boarding school and start to discover things that may be dangerous to uncover. This is such a fun read and I am so excited by the premise that I literally can’t wait to get my hands on more!
