Fires of Fate #1

Under the Dragon's Spell

Rate this book
Coming from a broken home, Adrian’s biggest dream in life has always been to find a loving partner and start a family of his own. But when his boyfriend kicks him out, it’s starting to look like that’s never going to happen. Worse yet, he has to move in with his brother to keep from living on the street, and the prevalent bias against men with the ability to carry children keeps him from finding a job of his own.

He’s about ready to give up hope when he finds a job offer in the newspaper searching for someone to produce an heir for a rich dragon shifter. Having a baby with a stranger, even if he’s enigmatic and hot as hell, is not his definition of happiness, but when he finds himself falling for the dragon, he starts to hope again.

If only it wasn’t for the competition…

Stand alone story with no cliffhangers.

This had too many words and they weren’t very good words. Has to be the most boring dragon book I’ve ever read and it lacked heat and chemistry.

I’m legit super surprised I even finished reading it..... BOOOORE-ING

I am consistently surprised and fascinated by authors’ world building. I can't begin to imagine having these people, places, concepts, and ideas running around in my head, much less putting it down on paper. 'Under the Dragon's Spell' is written by a new-to-me author but was recommended, and so I decided to jump in and take a chance. The description intrigued me and I had a very strong feeling that I was going to fall for Adrian.

Yes, I fell. Within a few pages. I couldn't help myself. Adrian is an omega, meaning he can bear children, and he's been in a relationship with Rory for five years and they've tried to conceive all that time. Adrian knows it isn't him as he had himself checked out. But to come home and be faced with your lover, the person you thought you'd have forever with, handing you one small suitcase of your belongings, telling you it's over and to get out, and then, THEN, telling you he knocked some other guy up down at the bar. My heart broke for Adrian. All he's ever wanted is a family, children, and a loving partner.

Adrian thinks it's a joke when he sees the ad wanting a human omega to mate with the heir to the Dragonfang Clan and produce children. The dragons rarely leave their island, so he's stunned as to why they want a human to mate with. Adrian doesn't want to have a baby with a stranger, but his brother's continued nagging and his lack of luck at finding a job (apparently omegas don't make strong leaders), results in Adrian submitting an application. He has an interview with Tyrel that doesn't go well. Adrian can tell Tyrel is using some sort of magic on him and Adrian gets mad and leaves. Unbeknownst to Adrian it's very rare for a human to be able to not fall under a dragon's compulsion.

"Humans bored me, exactly because they were so easy. Mindless critters, all of them. My mother told me I needed an attitude adjustment. I told her where she could stick that opinion."

Tyrel made me laugh. He's so unrepentant in his attitudes. He's fascinated with Adrian after their first meeting. Tyrel can't believe a human can withstand his magic and the fact that Adrian isn't just a tool relieves Tyrel's mind in terms of potentially having a baby with the man. Of course, Tyrel truly believes that Adrian is only after money as all the other applicants are, but Adrian doesn't care about that. He wants a partner to love and cherish him that Adrian can take care of and they can have a bunch of children together. Tyrel never expected to feel this way about a human but something inside him recognizes Adrian as his mate.

There were so many twists and turns in this story that I wasn't expecting. I love that! The world building was good although the author only let information slip through here and there. I loved discovering that human male omegas came about because of a crossing with female dragons in the past. I really enjoyed Adrian and Tyrel definitely grew on me. If you like a good mpreg, then this is definitely one I can recommend.

I read this quickly, and liked it enough to want to continue the series, but I can't help but wish there had been more to the romance between Tyrel and Adrian (I mean I get they're fated mates, but I still want a little romance). And I wish there'd been a little more in-depth background, etc. about dragons, because what's here feels extremely "surface".
"I love you,” he whispered, like it was a secret, even though it wasn’t—I could feel it in his gaze when he looked at me, and I wasn’t afraid of anything he might do to me.

Enjoyable overall, and an interesting start to the series. I'll definitely check out book two.

Dual POV, dragon shifter Mpreg romance, with a HFN.

Spoiler Ahead This was a pretty good book that I enjoyed reading. Adrian’s boyfriend Rory kicked him out of his house turns out Rory cheated on him and got someone else pregnant after years of trying to conceive this left Adrian hurt and homeless so he moved in with his brother. Tyrel is a dragon shifter whose mother is threating him to produce an heir so he can get his inheritance so she places an ad in the newspaper looking for an omega. When Tyrel first meets Adrian he knows that their is something about him and when he uses his magic on him it doesn't work he wants him even more. I didn't like Tyrel's mother she was mean and rude to Adrian. I did like his friend Luca she was totally on his side. Adrian is sure that he blow his chance with Tyrel until he is called and invited to his house for a week with four other guys like a competition. This was a pretty good love story of sort Tyrel's mother didn't want him to pick Adrian because she couldn't control him turns out they are fated mates and when he gets pregnant Tyrel has to help him because the twins are killing him slowly so Tyrel goes to his father who he hasn't seen in years to learn how to mate with him. This was my first time reading this author's work but not my last as I have already downloaded to next book. The book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of mpreg, and I love the dragon shifter craze that seems to be going on at the moment as well. I also enjoyed the first book I read from this author, so I was looking forward to getting this one!

If I could, I would rate this 3.5 stars (curse you, GR rating system!) I thought the last third of the book was much stronger than the beginning. I liked that the way that Adrian and Tyrel became fated mates was unique and different that just a typical bite on the neck. I enjoyed them getting to know each other, all the dragon "magic" and the mpreg itself.

I will say that it took me a while to warm up to them as a couple, I think due to the nature of Adrian having to compete with others to be the baby-maker. It made it harder for me to buy into the attraction between the two MCs at first I think, but I was on board by the end. And I felt that there was some unevenness to his brother (pay the bills! I'm gonna be an uncle! I never knew if he was genuine closer to the end) and with everything going on with Tyrel's family...for me as a reader, it made it feel a bit jumbled there in the middle.

I will definitely be on the lookout for more from this author, I think a second book in her Mercy Hills Pack series is next! I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a new-to-me author, but I think I'm a new fan. This is one of those stories I like to read to evade reality. My guilty pleasure are Alpha & Omega books, but this has a little more plot behind it.

It's not a smut fest and the characters, including the secondary, are nicely developed. Plus, the author did a good job setting up the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this one. This is a new author to me. I enjoyed Adrian and Tyrel once they got together. This is MPreg and we get to 'see' the birth, I was happy about that ;-) I'm going to look forward to the next book in the series.

This one wasn't for me. When I say it was implausible, it's not the man turning into dragon or man having a baby thing that I'm talking about (which ought to make me question my life choices probably ;). The characters themselves were implausible to me - shallow, surface only, so their actions seemed mostly petulant. None of their decisions made sense to me and, even in books where you need to suspend disbelief for the whole premise, that's important to make for an enjoyable read. It wasn't just the two main characters, but the parents, siblings, the doctor, the butler, the other men at the house - they all failed in this regard.

Your mileage may vary but this one was (not even) just okay for me, dawg.

I'm a sucker for a dragon story. I liked this book even though it had a lot of similarities to other dragon books, fated mates, dragon control magic things like that. I was worth the read and I'll see how book 2 goes.

"...wouldn't raise a fuzz..."

Just like this book doesn't raise a fuzz. In any way. Nothing spectacular here, just mediocre writing, mediocre storytelling, and sometimes hilarious mistakes. Like someone's shirt being "bottomed" the wrong way, two men standing "eye in eye", something being "run-off-the-mill", a guy "blending" something out, and Adrian having not "gone down" with anyone since he was still with his ex.

Maybe this was run through Google translator?

Lovely sweet story of Adrian replying to an add for an egg carrier for a big dragon family, little did he know how his future would change

Giving it a big fat Ehh. If I could review it without a rating, I would. Was going to do 3 stars, but the extensive grammar errors were enough that I had to back track and reread some lines. Whole words missing or duplicates or similar words as if spell check suggested a different word by accident that kind of thing.

I read this after a personal recommendation, and it's just not my thing. Like at this point I tolerate mpreg at best so a pro baby making plot centered entirely around getting pregnant and then giving birth really wasn't my jam. If it's yours, then I'd recommend it if you're into a bachelorette style selection process with some good old mother in law drama and fated mates.

But hey I read something outside my comfort zone. So there's that. Have a nice day everyone!

MC1: Adrian Human Omega
MC2: Tyrel Dragon Shifter

Okay I am one of those readers you know, the ones with a dragon fetish and I was sooooo in the mood for a dragon love story but its very difficult to come by a decent dragon shifter mm book.

Then I saw this cover and it just called "Read me now!!!" So I did...

It's not perfect but it made me happy and I could venture into my happy place of fantasy and dragons.

This definitely have potential and I can't wait for the next one

2.5⭐️

A competition to find an Omega capable of providing the dragon king a child, a bit of a lottery and Adrian isn't quite sure he wants to be here. I'm not much into dragon tales, although I have tried a couple. It was the Omega and pregnancy side that drew me in, so I knew this was a bit of a gamble.
Don't let my words make your decision, it's a well written tale with a rather compelling plot just not my thing, although I did finish it, with a little skimming her and there.

The story started out rather weak but finished much stronger but I liked it enough to get the next book in the series.
One of the first things that bothered me was the way omegas were viewed as incapable holding down a well paid job due because they were able to kept pregnant. Whilst I can accept a world where this is possible, I would also expect to see women viewed the same way in such a society. It simply didn't make sense.
I also was confused by Adrian's brother Jackson who somehow magically morphed from bigoted, money hungry a-hole to being quite caring and supportive. Tyrel's mother had similar issues as her personality and motives wer all over the place.
As for Adrian's decision to apply for the job as a baby bearer, that was the weakest idea of the lot. Why on earth would he even consider it when he knew that he couldn't get pregnant. Sure he was desperate but being hired wouldn't have done him any good when he failed to produce. The writer should have looked for a more convincing way to get Adrian on the island that him behaving like a con artist.
Wow! Writing this review has made me realise just how much was wrong with the book. It didn't bother me a the time though so it was more engaging than I've made it sound.

2020 = 3 stars
2021 = skimmed to write review

A dragon-shifter / omegaverse / mpreg romance

Tyrel is a dragon-shifter, who needs an heir to get his inheritance. His mother has him place an ad in the newspaper for a human omega.
Adrian is the omega who Tyler chooses.

The first half is the omega selection process.
The second half is all about Adrian's troubled pregnancy. Tyrel has to find a way to save his life.

The story was good the first time I read it, but it didn't hold up well to a reread. I had to skim to finish it. There's barely any physical descriptions. One of the MCs is briefly described, while the other isn't described at all. That annoyed me to no end. How hard is it to describe the main characters? 🙄

I felt a little of the love between the MCs, but definitely no passion. There's one semi-steamy sex scene, one brief BJ, and one brief handjob. This author doesn't write sex scenes very well. I did like the MCs' relationship, even if it felt like superficial love.

Recommended for fans of sweet & simple mpreg, that has low steam and low angst.

I totally loved Adrian. I was disappointed that we didn't get a little more in-depth on Tyrel. I didn't really get the feeling about his commitment to Adrian until very late in the book.

I did like the explanation of "Fated Mates" for dragons and why so many dragons didn't like the idea.

Loved the HEA.

Better than average effort about a dragon looking for a mate. An ad is placed and our MC applies - and how the family goes about figuring out who is going to be the one being impregnated was a lot fun and a little bit of a bummer. The dragon and his boy get along, have some challenges, and are hopefully off to a bright future.
