Je leeft maar 1 keer van Fausto Brizzi is zijn tweede humoristische en hartverwarmende roman. Met als originele titel Si mi vuoi bene, letterlijk: als je van me houdt. De 46-jarige advocaat Diego uit Rome bevindt zich in een midlifecrisis. Als je 46 bent en niemand kijkt meer naar je om – wat kun je dan doen? Diego besluit om andere mensen te gaan helpen en zet de mooiste plannen in gang: hij herstelt de ruzie tussen twee vrienden, helpt zijn beste vriend beroemd te worden en bezorgt zijn zoon een vriendin. Wat hij ook doet, alles heeft idiote gevolgen. Het leven lijkt steeds somberder te worden. Toch heeft elke miskleun uiteindelijk een verrassend resultaat.

Fausto Brizzi is een populaire Italiaanse tv-producer van bittersweet romantische comedy’s. Zijn debuutroman Honderd gelukkige dagen werd een bestseller en de rechten werden aan 21 landen verkocht. Je leeft maar 1 keer zal met zijn aansprekende thema’s weer vele harten veroveren.

Op mijn bookazine stond dat dit een feelgood was. Ik miste eerlijk gezegd grotendeels het feelgood gehalte omdat meer dan de helft over de depressie gaat van het hoofdpersonage. Het stemde mij daardoor niet vrolijk haha! Ik vond het al met al een oke verhaal, maar ben blij dat ik hem uit heb.

Wat een helse vertoning! Wat een lelijke aforismen en uitweidingen. Als je schrijft over een overduidelijk belangrijk moment, kan je beter niet ook vertellen over het beste ijsje in Rome. En wat een oppervlakkige karakters. Eerlijk, het boeit me niets wat ze doen met hun leven.

Op de achterkant staat: uiteindelijk zouden we allemaal vrienden willen zijn met de hoofdpersoon. Nou ik niet.

Misschien denkt u nu: waarom dan niet 1 ster? Uk heb bedacht dat de regel is dat alleen boeken die ik niet uit krijg 1 ster verdienen. Maar boeken die ik niet uit krijg kan ik niet goed over oordelen en dat zal ik dus ook niet doen. Daarom zult u nooit zien dat ik 1 ster geef. Maar goed, dat dit boek me deze regel liet bedenken zegt genoeg.

Een lastig boek voor een review. Een boek over depressie de verschillende aspecten van depressies en een persoon die een depressie heeft. Je zou denken dat het een zwaar boek is en toch valt het mee. Ergens voelt het als een feelgood boek maar dat is gek om te zeggen over het onderwerp.

Il fallait oser se lancer dans un roman sur la dépression, sans craindre de sombrer dans le désespoir. Fausto Brizzi a contourné les pièges en concoctant une lecture généreuse et débordante d'espoir. Il y a du vrai dans ce livre, du touchant, du concret, de l'émotion et des questions, mais surtout il y a de l'humour, de la dérision, du revival et de la culture pop. J'y ai donc trouvé ma dose homéopathique pour me sentir guillerette ! À prescrire sans retenue, à déguster sans modération.

Lettura senza tante pretese.
Indicato da leggere sul tram, in treno o in coda alle Poste.
Non riesce a trasmettere il dramma "vero" in cui si vive quando si soffre di depressione...il protagonista sembra solo tanto triste e niente più.
E poi come nelle migliori commedie ecco che arriva l'Happy Ending...Evviva!

Fausto Brizzi (born 1968) is an Italian screenwriter, producer and film director (with about 17 directing credits, depending on the source). He's also published about half a dozen novels, none of which appears to have been translated into English yet. (Edit: His "Cento giorni di felicità" has actually been translated into English "100 Days of Happiness.")

I just finished reading "Se me vuoi bene" (2015) which I see was made into a film of the same name (2019) which he also directed.

This is my first encounter with one of Brizzi's works.

I enjoyed reading the book a good deal. It was light and breezy and feel-good and life-affirming. It was well-written, fast-paced, full of humor and pathos, populated by likeable characters.

The lightness of the story belies the nature of the subject matter: depression and suicide. Depression is presented fairly honestly, almost clinically, but never gets really depressing for the reader. Suicide is investigated, also almost clinically.

After finishing the book, I looked up the author and was entirely unsurprised to learn that he is a film director. This novel reads like a film adaptation. One of those modern films that's not bad, that you enjoy, but that fades away to nothing not long after you leave the theater. That's how I feel about this book: it was perfectly fine, enjoyable, but nothing particularly remarkable that will stick with me. None of the characters was really unusual or unforgettable. Nothing surprising happened. A lot of generic wisdom and good advice and motivational messages are to be found, but nothing new or fresh (at least to me) was presented.

One example of dozens (from page 44 of the edition pictured):

"I dopo, in realtà, sono sempre migliori dei prima, almeno fino a quando non diventano a loro volta prima."

I would definitely recommend this book to Italian learners looking for authentic content that's fairly accessible to someone with a grasp of basic grammar: The prose is straightforward, most of the idioms are clear from the context, the language is modern and real (and useful, unlike what you often encounter in "classic" literature) without being excessively slangy, and there's a good deal of contemporary Italian culture conveyed throughout. I think this novel would be a good choice for someone who's completed a basic study of the language and is looking to improve their vocabulary and fluency.

I think it would also lend itself to group discussion, be that in a book club or in a classroom.

Unfortunately there is no English translation of this Italian book. It wasn't a 'waw'-read to me. The intention of the book was good and I thought it would be a humoristic book, as it was presented like that. The focus of the book was for a big part set on Diego and his depression and a bit less on the humor part. Okay, the events and what Diego tried to do for his family and friends and the happy ending with Loredana added to the happiness part of the book, but still there was much focus on Diego's mental state, especially in the first part of the book. So, that was hard to get through at some points. The second part of the story, was a more lighter part.
But, the book had some interesting sentences and funny events. So, that made the rest okay.

Le meilleur souvenir qu'il me restera de ce livre est qu'une jolie Italienne m'a abordée dans l'autobus, toute contente de voir qu'un auteur de son patelin avait traversé l'Atlantique. Sinon, c'était bon, sans plus - j'ai interrompu la lecture de plusieurs jours, c'est jamais bon signe; par contre j'étais peut-être pas à la bonne place dans ma vie pour lire une histoire de dépression..! Les missions finales étaient un peu tirées par les cheveux. Mais j'ai quand même eu du plaisir et je décrirerais donc ce livre comme "ben correct".

Secondo libro che leggo di questo autore e ho davvero amato ogni parte di questo romanzo. Non è mai facile parlare di depressione senza cadere nel troppo professionale o nel troppo scontato ma Brizzi riesce a raccontarci momenti difficili di una malattia infida con una delicatezza e anche un pizzico di ironia che sicuramente fa volare queste poco meno di 250 pagine in un soffio e anche con qualche risata al momento giusto.

The main character of this book battles with depression, but the read isn't sad at all. I like the straightforward writing style; the story itself grew on me. It's refreshing to read a story about a heavy topic written in such a down to earth way. However, it's not a book I wanted to devour, which is the reason I didn't give it 4 or 5 stars.

Avevo amato Cento giorni di felicità e mi ritrovo qui ad amare nuovamente lo stile assolutamente riconoscibile di Brizzi. Non è da tutti parlare di depressione con leggerezza, ma lui ci riesce e fa pure ridere, senza però mai sottovalutare l'argomento. Un finale abbastanza prevedibile ma comunque dolce, un libro perfetto per farsi tornare il buonumore.

Dit boek ligt in dezelfde lijn van "100 mooie dagen", niet alleen in stijl en verhaallijn maar ook in omgeving (Rome), kleinigheden (een liefde voor donuts en weetjes) en zelfs personages (de praatjeswinkel!). En ik dacht dat ik deze keer niet ging wenen maar toch!

Bijzonder boek! Heel anders dan wat ik tot nu toe heb gelezen. Het eerste stuk gaat over het depressief zijn van de hoofdpersoon, daar moest ik me even doorheen worstelen. Bij het tweede deel had ik steeds vaker een lach op mijn gezicht en af en toe een traan. Heerlijk geschreven met humor.
