I imagine this is the first of the series, mainly because it seems as though Detective Sam Berger has left the police to become a private investigator, with his partner who helped to work this serial killer case of disappearing 15 year old girls and because things are left hanging in a major way suggesting only part of the case is resolved. This is a twisted and dark Scandi-Noir featuring a melancholic Sam Berger who leads a team into a farmhouse thought to be where a missing girl, Ellen, is being held. The scene becomes a nightmare as the place is booby trapped with knives that seriously hurt a police officer. Ellen is not there although there is evidence she was tortured in the basement and a tiny cog is the only clue. Sam is convinced there is a serial killer on the loose but cannot convince others, like his boss, Detective Superintendent Allan Gudmundsson.
Sam has an ex-wife, who took their two children, Marcus and Oscar, out of Sweden. He has a traumatic backstory from his schooldays that still haunts him today. He is obsessed with timepieces, clocks and expensive watches, such as his Patek Philippe 2508, which was stolen. The police procedural that this novel begins with shifts considerably as Sam and his partner find themselves forced to work the case off the grid. It becomes apparent there are a string of 15 year old girls deemed to have been victims of the serial killer. However, when it comes to tangible evidence, it is all a case of ghosts in the machine, nothing can be proved. In a case that tests Sam and his partner to their limits, as it becomes clear that the killer is tracking them and has them in his sights. This is a story of revenge, the security services, and a killer determined to settle scores.
Arne Dahl has written a dark, disturbing, thrilling and fast paced novel with some terrific twists. It is well written with an intricate and complex plot. The narrative is gripping, full of suspense and tension. His central character is haunted, with enough darkness and complications to sustain a series. I loved the major role of clocks and watches in the plot, both gruesome and interesting. I found the book highly entertaining and absorbing as a read. Highly recommended to readers of crime fiction. I’d personally put this as a suspense, investigator kinda series.
First book in a new series (I’m late reading this and others are already out) it opens well.
Loved the main character and how he was developed with his past demons being brought to the fore, giving him a good realistic 3D personage.
Twisty.
Rounded.
Fast paced.
What more do we want.

I am not having any luck with books at present, this sounded good but a very slow burn that didn’t keep my interest just was not my idea of a police procedural.

This book had one of the most unique and unexpected twists to it, that made me stop reading and really think to myself how did I not see that coming.
That is testament to the author who's writing is not only addictive but also totally brilliant, totally give my emotions and mind a good shake up,compulsive read,highly recommend it.

UPDATE 17TH OF MAY 2025: I MET ARNE DAHL!!! Guys, he's so funny and kind, and the way he tried to pronounce the Serbian title of one of his novels (coincidentally this one) was so adorable. I'm glad I met him.
The review:
So I basically started this the day I was going to meet the author, I only got my hands on a copy two days prior and didn't have enough time to read the whole thing, but the section I did manage to get through helped me to follow the discussion at ThrillerFest.
There were some spoilers for the series mentioned there, and I've wiped them from my brain. Poof. But honestly, even if I did remember them, I wouldn't have minded, because this book was just SO GOOD.
The atmosphere with the constant rain really set the tone for the story, I could tell early on that I was going to love it, even if the beginning chapters took some getting used to. And when you add all the little clues, twists, and intriguing characters, well, that's a winner right there.
Now I see why Arne Dahl is considered the King of Nordic Noir, the story was incredibly gripping, every reveal shocking, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, not knowing who to trust. And when that ending hit...
Listen, I'm glad the rest of the series is already out, because I wouldn't be able to sleep if it had ended like this and I couldn't grab the next one immediately. Arne Dahl has a reader in me for life.

At each abandoned crime scene, there is a hidden clue, a tiny metal dog, almost invisible to the human eye. Someone is sending Detective Sam Berger a message. Someone who knows that only Sam will understand the cryptic trail. When another teenage girl disappears without trace, Sam has to convince his superiors that they are dealing with a serial killer. As the police continue the hunt for the latest victim, Sam is forced to unearth long-buried personal demons. Sam has to understand darkly personal messages before time runs out.
This is an exciting, fast paced book that has an intricate plot and a strong character base. I quite like reading Swedish police procedural books and this one did not disappoint. As usual, there are plenty twist and turns. It has a gripping plot line and I was not expecting the cliffhanger. This is a very well written book and I have no hesitation recommending this book.

Το ''Watching You'' ήταν μια πολυαναμενόμενη νέα κυκλοφορία καθώς ο Arne Dahl (κατά κόσμον Jan Arnald) θα δοκιμαζόταν σε ένα καινούργιο είδος γραφής, εντελώς διαφορετικό από αυτό που συνηθίσαμε στις -αγαπημένες- σειρές Intercrime και Οpcop. Σε αυτό το βιβλίο συναντάμε έναν ''αγνώριστο'' Dahl, στον βαθμό που εάν το διάβαζα δίχως να γνωρίζω από πριν τον συγγραφέα, δεν θα υπήρχε περίπτωση να φανταστώ ότι δημιουργός του είναι ο Σουηδός λογοτέχνης. Πρόκειται για ένα 100% police procedural μυθιστόρημα, με έντονες επιρροές από το -αμερικάνικο- hardboiled ύφος και με πρωταγώνιστή έναν χαρακτήρα, με τον οποίο υποθέτω ότι θα γνωρίσουμε καλύτερα στα επόμενα βιβλία της νέας αυτής σειράς, τον επιθεωρητή Sam Berger, συνεπικουρούμενο από την αστυνόμο στο τμήμα της ασφαλείας, Molly Blom. Οι δυό τους ρίχνονται στο κυνήγι ενός στυγνού και συγχρόνως πανέξυπνου καθ' έξιν δολοφόνου και απαγωγέα, τον οποίο, όπως αποδεικνύεται κατά την εξέλιξη της έρευνας, γνωρίζουν από το σκοτεινό τους παρελθόν τόσο ο ένας όσο και ο άλλος. Το προσωπικό στοιχείο που στην αρχή μοιάζει αρκετά μακρινό, ασαφές και θαμπό, δυναμώνει κατά την εξέλιξη της γρήγορης πλοκής και διαπλέκεται με την αντιπαράθεση των δύο κεντρικών χαρακτήρων με την επίσημη αστυνομία, καθώς και σφράγίζει την μοίρα τους στο αρκετά ικανοποιητικό φινάλε. Από το βιβλίο απoυσιάζει το whodunit στοιχείο, αφού μαθαίνουμε από αρκετά νωρίς το όνομα του δράστη, ωστόσο αυτό δεν μειώνει στο ελάχιστο το ενδιαφέρον και την αγωνία του αναγνώστη, ο οποίος σε πολλά σημεία του βιβλίου μένει άναυδος με τις -εξαιρετικές και αληθοφανέστατες- ανατροπές που τον αναγκάζουν να αλλάξει συνολικά την προοοπτική από την οποία έβλεπε την εξέλιξη της ιστορίας. Επιπλέον, ο Dahl μοιράζει στις σωστές τους αναλογίες την περιγραφή, τους διαλόγους και την δράση με αποτέλεσμα να υπογράφει ένα αρτιότατο αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα και να αποδεικνύει ότι ενας καλός συγγραφέας μπορεί να επιτύχει εάν τολμήσει να αλλάξει το ύφος που τον έχει κάνει εμπορικό. Όσοι περιμένουν ένα μυθιστόρημα που θα θυμίζει αυτά της ''Ομάδας-Α'', που έκαναν γνωστό τον Σουηδό στο ελληνικό αναγνωστικό κοινό, θα βρεθούν σίγουρα προ μιας -ευχάριστης- έκπληξης. Μόνο και μόνο γι' αυτό το στοιχείο της αλλαγής, το ''Watching Υou'' αξίζει, για εμένα, ένα αστεράκι παραπάνω στην τελική του αξιολόγηση.

Tempó, na, az van. Nyugodtan ki merem jelenteni, hogy ha van erőssége a kötetnek, az éppen a tempó. Dahl már kezdésnek bedob minket a közepébe: egy potenciális gyilkossági helyszínen kúszunk-mászunk, vérfoltok a falon, halálos csapdák, miegymás - és a nemzetközi helyzet ezek után csak fokozódik. Egy merő rohanás a regény - egyfelől a nyomozók rohannak a gyilkos után, másfelől nagyon úgy fest, hogy a gyilkos is ott liheg a nyomozók nyakában, egy idő után meg még a nyomozók is üldözik egymást, szóval körbe-körbe, karikába szaladgál mindenki, éppen csak a Benny Hill Show zenéje hiányzik az egész alá.
Közben meg esik az a nyűves skandináv eső, mindenki csurom víz, de megszáradni nincs idő, mert a gyilkos odakünn vadászik, az áldozatok száma pedig egyre nő. Apropó áldozatok. Kevés krimiben éreztem ennyire, hogy az áldozat nem személy, hanem egyszerű eszköz, ami arra szolgál, hogy növekedjék a feszültség. Úgy tolja be a szerző az újabb és újabb eltűnt kamaszlányokat a cselekménybe, mintha zsetonok lennének egy pókerjátszmában, ahol a tétet folyton emelni kell. Ami azt illeti, ez jobban belegondolva hiányosság - ám sokáig fel sem tűnik a nyaktörő rohanásban. De úgy általában véve is: igazából nincs olyan hibája a regénynek, amit az író által megkonstruált sodrás ne tenne megbocsáthatóvá.
Annyit még megjegyeznék, hogy aki a függővéget kitalálta, annak kelljen nagyon pisilnie, de fogadja a nyilvános WC ajtaján egy "Rögtön jövök" tábla. Azzal együtt, hogy Dahl elég intelligensen alkalmazza ezt az eszközt: tárva hagyja ugyan a cselekmény kapuját, de azért le is zár bizonyos dolgokat, hogy ne egyen meg minket az ideg teljesen. Szóval esetében megelégszem azzal, hogy kinn van ugyan a "Rögtön jövök" tábla, de a vécésnéni tényleg rögtön jön.

Maybe I have grown out of reading Arne Dahl? I used to love his A-group series, but this one didn't hold me enthralled. I skipped pages to avoid the action in the final climax and what I perceived as tiresome banter.
I will try the next one, after all there was some serious cliffhanger in this one!

Swedish review
Ellen Savinger är femton år och har varit borta i tre veckor. Polisen Sam Berger tror att en seriemördare har tagit henne, men då ingen kropp har hittats är det ingen som tar hans teori på allvar. Men så får de till slut en öppning i fallet och i samma veva så hittar den den mystiska Nathalie Fredén. Men kanske har Sam tagit sig vatten över huvudet...?
Vad jag undrar är följande; varför har jag aldrig läst Arne Dahl förut? Han är en av min mammas favoritförfattare men jag har inte direkt intresserat mig tillräckligt för att läsa hans böcker. Det var innan jag fastnade för handlingen av denna bok och tillförskaffade mig ett exemplar. Och, wow, efter en smula förvirrande inledning, när det känns som om man damp ner i handlingen i en bok där någon hade tagit bort de första kapitlen så tog boken verkligen fart när Nathalie Fredén kom med i handlingen. Sedan var det full fart och vändningarna jag absolut inte hade förväntat mig genom hela boken. Och, så klart ett cliffhanger slut. Typiskt!
Utmarker är utan tvekan en av de bästa svenska kriminalare jag har läst. Den är välskriven, spännande och man kan knappt gissa sig till vad som ska hända härnäst när man läser boken. Jag ser fram emot att läsa uppföljaren till denna bok!

But, then they finally get an opening in the case and at the same time they find the mysterious Nathalie Fredén. But, perhaps Sam is in water over his head?
What I'm wondering is; why haven't I read Arne Dahl before? He is one of my mother's favorite authors. But, I have never really been that interested in reading his books. It wasn't until I read the blurb for this book and I felt that I really needed to get a copy of the book because the book seemed so interesting. And, wow, after an introduction that felt a bit confusing, like someone had removed the first couple of chapters, the book's story really took off when Nathalie Fredén was introduced into the story. After that, it was action all the way through the book with twists I absolutely never did expect coming. And, of course, the book ended with a cliffhanger.
Utmarker (a Swedish word for the outskirts) is one of the best Swedish crime novels I have read. It's well written, thrilling and you can hardly guess what will happen next in the book. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel to the book!

Pustoš je smešten u Stokholm i njegovu okolinu, a prati priču policajca Sama Bergera koji istražuje nestanak jedne petnaestogodišnje Elen Savinger. Iako ne postoji baš puno dokaza za to, Berger je ubeđen da je u pitanju serijski ubica, i pokušava da ovaj nestanak poveže sa nestancima koji su se desili pre godinu ili čak dve. U trenutku kada niko neće poverovati u njega, pojaviće se žena koja će biti prvi osumnjičeni u ovom slučaju, izvesna Natali Freden. Pojavljivanje Natali Freden će uzburkati ovu priču koja je sve samo ne očigledna.
Ono što Pustoš razlikuje od drugih trilera jeste atmosfera koju Arne Dal stvara, kao i njegov način pisanja. Da biste napisali dobar triler, nije bitno biti odličan pisac niti koristiti komplikovane narativne tehnike, simbole i motive. Dobar pisac trilera mora da posloži svoje rečenice da se lepo uklope kao kockice, jer to je upravo ono što čini triler. Žanr koji se sam po sebi oslanja na misteriju i jezu koju stvara ne zahteva maestralne veštine pisanja. Pisci trilera retko kada napišu nešto što izlazi iz tog žanra i što vredi pročitati. Situacija sa Arneom Dalom je potpuno drugačija. Njegove rečenice su zaista neverovatne, i to je prva stvar koja potpuno izbacuje ovaj roman iz koša klasičnih trilera. Ovaj triler je potpuno drugačiji prvenstveno jer mu je narativna tehnika dobra, ton romana, način na koji gradi atmosferu, i najbitnije – likove. Lik Natari Freden je ujedno jedan od najjezivijih likova koji su se ikad pojavili u triler žanru književnost.
Početak samog romana može biti malo konfuzniji. Naime, dok čitalac ne uđe u celu priču o detektivu Bergeru, roman će delovati vrlo čudno, međutim već negde posle prvih četrdesetak strana priča kreće, i spustiti knjigu je potpuno nemoguće. Čita se neverovatno brzo – ne zato što je napisano jednostavno – već zato što izuzetno drži pažnju. Osim pažnje, Pustoš budi veliku količinu jeze, saosećanja sa junacima, kao i neka pitanja koja ćemo pitati sebe a koja su vezana za našu prošlost.
Još jedan razlog zašto je Pustoš drugačiji triler? Retko koji triler ima tu neku lekciju koju želi da nam poruči. Ovaj ima, i to kroz junaka romana, detektiva Bergera. Slučaj nestale Elen Savinger će se vrlo brzo vezati za njegovu ličnu prošlost, i upravo tu nam Arne Dal pomaže da i mi sami trknemo do našeg detinjstva i vidimo šta smo i mi to radili drugima a nismo svesni. Nečemo ništa da otkrivamo ovde, ali roman bi svakako trebalo da se nađe u Vašim rukama.
Pustoš je smešten u Stokholm i njegovu okolinu, a prati priču policajca Sama Bergera koji istražuje nestanak jedne petnaestogodišnje Elen Savinger. Iako ne postoji baš puno dokaza za to, Berger je ubeđen da je u pitanju serijski ubica, i pokušava da ovaj nestanak poveže sa nestancima koji su se desili pre godinu ili čak dve. U trenutku kada niko neće poverovati u njega, pojaviće se žena koja će biti prvi osumnjičeni u ovom slučaju, izvesna Natali Freden. Pojavljivanje Natali Freden će uzburkati ovu priču koja je sve samo ne očigledna.
Ono što Pustoš razlikuje od drugih trilera jeste atmosfera koju Arne Dal stvara, kao i njegov način pisanja. Da biste napisali dobar triler, nije bitno biti odličan pisac niti koristiti komplikovane narativne tehnike, simbole i motive. Dobar pisac trilera mora da posloži svoje rečenice da se lepo uklope kao kockice, jer to je upravo ono što čini triler. Žanr koji se sam po sebi oslanja na misteriju i jezu koju stvara ne zahteva maestralne veštine pisanja. Pisci trilera retko kada napišu nešto što izlazi iz tog žanra i što vredi pročitati. Situacija sa Arneom Dalom je potpuno drugačija. Njegove rečenice su zaista neverovatne, i to je prva stvar koja potpuno izbacuje ovaj roman iz koša klasičnih trilera. Ovaj triler je potpuno drugačiji prvenstveno jer mu je narativna tehnika dobra, ton romana, način na koji gradi atmosferu, i najbitnije – likove. Lik Natari Freden je ujedno jedan od najjezivijih likova koji su se ikad pojavili u triler žanru književnost.
Početak samog romana može biti malo konfuzniji. Naime, dok čitalac ne uđe u celu priču o detektivu Bergeru, roman će delovati vrlo čudno, međutim već negde posle prvih četrdesetak strana priča kreće, i spustiti knjigu je potpuno nemoguće. Čita se neverovatno brzo – ne zato što je napisano jednostavno – već zato što izuzetno drži pažnju. Osim pažnje, Pustoš budi veliku količinu jeze, saosećanja sa junacima, kao i neka pitanja koja ćemo pitati sebe a koja su vezana za našu prošlost.

U oktobarskom kišom okovanom Stokholmu inspektor Sam Berger vodi istragu povodom nestanka petnaestogodišnje Elen Savinger.
Iako Berger sumnja da je ovaj slučaj povezan sa drugima i da je Elen oteo serijski ubica, on je usamljen u svojim idejama, pa tako po svim pokazateljima nerješiv slučaj počne da se odmotava kada Berger odgovore potraži u svojoj prošlosti, iz koje će se pojaviti i njegova buduća saradnica Blum.
Kako dalje ne bih spojlovala radnju, osvrnuću se na dobre strane ove knjige, a to su likovi koji sa sobom nose svoje demone, požrtvovanost i predanost poslu, sumorna jesenja atmosfera glavnog grada Švedske i njegove okoline, opisi kiše koja skoro neprestano pada pet dana, te nepredvidivost raspleta.
S druge strane Pustoši nedostaje kvalitet u samoj priči, koja je na mnogim mjestima ''tanka'', iako je olakšavajuća okolnost da se radi o prvom dijelu trilogije Berger & Bloom, te čitalačka ravnodušnost prema počiniocu zločina i žrtvama.
U svakom slučaju Pustoš je dobar prvi korak nove izdavačke kuće ''Dokaz'' u objavljivanju skandinasvkih trilera, što je samo po sebi, zaista dobra vijest.

I loved Dahl's Intercrime series, but this book is far more conventional, even a bit tired. There are some great twists that are so out there that they're practically U-turns in the first half but then things settle into one of those tales where a traumatic event in childhood is played out 30 years later, a premise which always makes me sigh in disbelief.
What I loved about the Intercrime series was the slick plotting and, especially, the rounded characterisations of the team with their banter and individualism - here the characters don't stand out in any way, and there's no chemistry or humour to make them real.
Overall, I would describe this as solid rather than brilliant: it doesn't break the mould in any way but delivers a pacy and twisting story.

I loved this one – it was just the kind of twisty story I love with a couple of smartly drawn main protagonists, plenty of mystery, completely gripping and really right up my street.
It is a “serial killer thriller” that also sets up what I hope will be a long running series as I am at this point very attached to Sam as a character – and just as attached to his erstwhile partner in crime who’s name I won’t give you right now so as not to spoil the plot – but individually they allow for a lot of fun reading and together even more so.
The underneath mystery of it is shadowy and dangerous, I loved how the various strands came together slowly over the course of it, especially within the setting which was clearly drawn and atmospheric. It fairly raced along, perfectly paced, until those final fairly horrifying moments. A big bang of an end which made me crazy (in a good way) means that I will actually be willing to kill for the next novel…
This doesn’t have that usual feel that you get from Nordic crime, it has a quite individual tone that sits well between Nordic Noir and British based crime thrillers – this served to make me feel all the more at home with it, not sure how much kudos for that sits with the translator ( Neil Smith) but I’d guess it’s at least a bit so he deserves a shout out.
Overall an excellent thriller that will have me reading the back catalogue and indeed looking forward to all future books. Gripping, clever and unexpected.

I’m a long time fan of Scandinavian thrillers and of course Arne Dahl is one of my favorites. His books are not suitable for people who like an easy read. No, from page one on, you are thrown into the story and only slowly you will get a grasp of what is really going on. This story has almost as much layers as there are pages in the book, with the layers becoming more and more intriguing.
What’s so clever with Dahl’s writing is that you have to fill out part of the story for yourself. It’s not that every little part is explained in detail and most of all, Sam (the main character) doesn’t rely completely on computers and other technical stuff. He uses his own instincts, his own brain, and he needs both in this story. It is fast-paced but yet not the sort of pace that leaves you thinking ‘was this it’?
I really loved the very tiny pieces of information the author feeds us which so neatly lead us to the big story behind it.
And yes, there is a cliffhanger… So please Mr Dahl, I hope to find your next book soon!

Οκ, τα Σκανδιναβικά μπορείς να τα πεις μακροσκελή, περιττά, υπερβολικά Χολιγουντιανά, όμως δεν παύουν να σου υπενθυμίζουν πόσο σου αρέσει το διάβασμα.
Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο ξεφεύγει από τα κλισέ που ανέφερα παραπάνω, με ένα γαμάτο και απρόβλεπτο μυστήριο να καλύπτει τα πάντα. Ανατρεπτικό και πρωτότυπο, με στοιχεία πιο κλασικού νουάρ παρά του γνώριμου σκανδιναβικού μοντέλου. Αρκετές ασάφειες στο τέλος μου φάνηκαν να υπήρχαν μόνο και μόνο για να tease-άρουν ένα σίκουελ, όμως αυτό δεν με κάνει να ανυπομονώ λιγότερο.

January 13, 2021Αφήστε στην άκρη ότι κάνετε και ξεκινήστε τα τελευταία τρία βιβλία του Arne Dahl. Ναι ναι καλά διαβάζετε. Τρία στον αριθμό. Και διαβάστε τα με τη σειρά χωρίς τίποτα άλλο στο ενδιάμεσο. Μα όλα μαζί θα μου πείτε; Ναι όλα μαζί. Γιατί η τριλογία (που από ότι μαθαίνουμε θα έχει και τέταρτο και πέμπτο βι��λίο τελικά) του Σαμ και της Μόλι ή αν θέλετε του Μπέργερ και της Μπλουμ συνδέονται απόλυτα μεταξύ τους. Για αυτό δεν πρέπει να χάσετε ούτε κόμμα.
Ο κατά κόσμον Γιάν Αρνάλντ βάλθηκε να μας μάθει μαθηματικές πράξεις οπότε δώστε μεγάλη προσοχή σε ότι διαβάζετε γιατί μετά θα σας εξετάσει. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι πριν το 7-1, 6Χ2 και 5+3 το μοναδικό βιβλίο του Arne Dahl που είχα διαβάσει ήταν το Misterioso. Και θυμάμαι ότι με είχε εκπλήξει ευχάριστα η λογοτεχνικότητα αλλά και η ρεαλιστικότητα της γραφής του. Η οποία δεν χάνεται στην τριλογία των Μπέργερ και Μπλουμ αλλά σε αυτά τα τρία βιβλία σίγουρα ο αναγνώστης που έχει εντρυφήσει στα βιβλία του Dahl θα δει την αλλαγή του συγγραφέα σε κάτι ίσως πιο εμπορικό. Γενικώς αυτά τα βιβλία τα σπάνε που λέει και ο λαός…
Σαμ και Μόλι, λοιπόν, ή Μπέργερ και Μπλουμ. Κρατάτε ότι σας αρέσει. Ένα δίδυμο που μέχρι την τελευταία στιγμή θα αναρωτιόμαστε ποια είναι ακριβώς η σχέση τους. Ειδικά στο 6Χ2 μπερδεύονται τόσο πολύ τα πράγματα που στην αρχή αναρωτιέσαι αν έχεις χάσει κάτι από το πρώτο βιβλίο. Αν ήσουν αφηρημένος και κάτι βασικό σου έχει ξεφύγει. Αλλά όχι δεν έχεις χάσει τίποτα, δεν σου έχει ξεφύγει κάτι. Απλά ο μεσιέ Dahl είπε να παίξει λίγο μαζί σου. Παρόλα αυτά το δεύτερο βιβλίο (το 6Χ2 δηλαδή) θα έλεγε κανείς ότι λειτουργεί σαν παρένθεση ανάμεσα στα άλλα δύο (το 7-1 και το 5+3) θέτοντας τις βάσεις για τη συνέχεια.
Και μην σας μπερδεύουν οι μαθηματικές πράξεις. Ούτε να προσπαθήσετε να βγάλετε κάποιο αποτέλεσμα από αυτές. Σε κάθε βιβλίο αλλά και σε όλα μαζί οι απαντήσεις κρύβονται μέσα στις σελίδες τους. Ξεκινήστε να διαβάζετε λοιπόν και όλα θα σας αποκαλυφθούν αργά αργά και εντελώς βασανιστικά. Όχι μην φοβάστε. Δεν έχουν αργή γραφή τα συγκεκριμένα βιβλία του. Ο Dahl εδώ ακολουθεί κινηματογραφική γραφή και τα γεγονότα τρέχουν με ταχύτητα φωτός. Η δεξιοτεχνία του αγαπημένου συγγραφέα πολλών από τους λάτρεις αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων είναι αξιοθαύμαστη καθώς καταφέρνει να δέσει μέσα σε τρία βιβλία μια ολόκληρη ιστορία. Όλα συνδέονται μεταξύ τους και όλα αφορούν το σκοτεινό παρελθόν αλλά και το παρόν των δύο πρωταγωνιστών των βιβλίων Σάμ Μπέργερ και Μόλι Μπλουμ.
Στο 7-1 ο Dahl μας συστήνει με το δίδυμο των ηρώων του μέσα από μια υπόθεση ενός καθ’ έξιν δολοφόνου ο οποίος έχει απαγάγει, όπως όλα δείχνουν στην πορεία, εφτά έφηβες κοπέλες. Ακολουθώντας τα στοιχεία του νήματος καθώς ξετυλίγεται το κουβάρι θα ανασύρουν και οι δύο από τη μνήμη τους τα δικά τους εφηβικά χρόνια και τις «αμαρτωλές» πράξεις τους παρελθόντος. Ο Σαμ αλλά και η Μόλι παλεύουν με τους δαίμονες του παρόντος τους και εκεί που όλα δείχνουν ότι τους ενώνουν έρχονται άλλα τόσα για να τους χωρίσουν. Τα κουτάκια όμως που έχουν θάψει βαθιά στη μνήμη τους έρχονται να τους υπενθυμίσουν τι ήταν αυτό που τους επηρέασε βαθιά ως ανθρώπους αλλά και καθόρισε το ποιοι είναι στο σήμερα.
Στο 6Χ2 πάλι, και ενώ υποθέτουμε ότι έχουμε κλείσει όλες τις ανοιχτές τρύπες του προηγούμενου βιβλίου, ξαφνικά βρισκόμαστε σε μια χαώδη κατάσταση στα πρώτα κεφάλαια ξύνοντας το κεφάλι μας με απορία. Ο ευρηματικός Arne Dahl καταφέρνει να σπείρει την απόλυτη σύγχυση στους αναγνώστες οι οποίοι, είμαι σίγουρη, θα ανατρέξουν στο προηγούμενο βιβλίο ψάχνοντας να δουν τι είναι αυτό που τους έχει ξεφύγει. Αλλά μην ανησυχείτε γιατί όλα είναι μελετημένα με χειρουργική ακρίβεια από τον συγγραφέα και καθώς προχωράει η πλοκή του βιβλίου έρχονται σιγά σιγά όλα να δέσουν και φυσικά να βγάλουν και νόημα. Το 6Χ2 μέσα από τα παρανοϊκά μονοπάτια της πλοκής και της αφήγησης του οδηγεί στο τρίτο βιβλίο της σειράς, το 5+3, που όπως όλα δείχνουν δεν θα είναι και το τελευταίο τελικά.
Ο Dahl αποφάσισε να μας χαρίσει και άλλες συναρπαστικές στιγμές με τον Σαμ και τη Μόλι. Παρόλα αυτά στο 5+3 οι όποιες εκκρεμότητες υπάρχουν ανάμεσα στους δύο ήρωες λύνονται και στο τέλος επέρχεται η κάθαρση για όλους. Στο τρίτο βιβλίο οι αναγνώστες καθώς διαβάζουν θα ανακαλύψουν ότι συνδέεται απόλυτα με το 7-1 συνεχίζοντας την αφήγηση του από εκεί που σταμάτησε το 6Χ2. Ίσως το καλύτερο βιβλίο αυτής της τριλογίας με αλλεπάλληλες ανατροπές που κυριολεκτικά δεν θα πιστεύετε αυτό που διαβάζετε. Ετοιμαστείτε να ξεχάσετε ότι ξέρατε μέχρι τώρα για το ζεύγος Μπέργερ και Μπλουμ και να ανακαλύψετε πόσο διεφθαρμένος είναι ο κόσμος γύρω τους και πόσα παιχνίδια παίζονται πίσω από τις πλάτες τους. Προσοχή να μην σας αποπροσανατολίσουν τα μεσόνερα… Αν θέλετε να βρείτε την επιφάνεια θα πρέπει να ακολουθήσετε τις φυσαλίδες του οξυγόνου.
Ο Arne Dahl στα βιβλία των Μπέργερ και Μπλουμ κάνει στροφή στη γραφή του δημιουργώντας τρία βιβλία με police procedural πλοκή σε σχέση με τα πιο ατμοσφαιρικά μυθιστορήματα που τον είχαμε συνηθίσει στο παρελθόν. Παρόλα αυτά η ποιότητα της γραφής του παραμένει αναλλοίωτη και γίνεται ακόμα πιο εξαιρετική μέσα από την μετάφραση του Γρηγόρη Κονδύλη. Ο Dahl στήνει ένα ευρηματικό παιχνίδι κυνηγητού ενός κακού που απειλεί να κατασπαράξει τους πάντες και να σπείρει τις αμφιβολίες απέναντι στον Σαμ και στη Μόλι ο οποίος δεν την εμπιστεύεται απόλυτα σε κανένα από τα τρία βιβλία. Αλλά τελικά αυτή είναι η μοναδική σανίδα σωτηρίας του και ο άνθρωπος που θα στηριχτεί πάνω του για να καταφέρει να ξεμπερδέψει το κουβάρι της υπόθεσης.
Οι αναφορές στον Άμλετ του Σαίξπηρ και στην Οδύσσεια του Τζέιμς Τζόυς στο 5+3 ουσιαστικά αναβαθμίζουν ολόκληρο το βιβλίο στα μάτια των αναγνωστών προβάλλοντας για ακόμα μια φορά πόσο διαβασμένος είναι και ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας και πόσο έξυπνα έχει καταφέρει να στήσει την πλοκή του βιβλίου. Αν δεν έχετε διαβάσει άλλη φορά Arne Dahl ξεκινήστε με το 7-1, συνεχίστε με το 6Χ2 και τελειώστε με το 5+3 για να μπορέσετε να μπείτε και εσείς στο παρανοϊκό και άκρως μαγευτικό σύμπαν ενός συγγραφέα ο οποίος γνωρίζει πολύ καλά πως να επιλέγει την κάθε παράγραφο, την κάθε λέξη, το κάθε κόμμα αλλά και την κάθε τελεία για να έχει ένα συγκλονιστικό αποτέλεσμα.

Ξεκινήστε να διαβάζετε λοιπόν και όλα θα σας αποκαλυφθούν αργά αργά και εντελώς βασανιστικά. Όχι μην φοβάστε. Δεν έχουν αργή γραφή τα συγκεκριμένα βιβλία του. Ο Dahl εδώ ακολουθεί κινηματογραφική γραφή και τα γεγονότα τρέχουν με ταχύτητα φωτός. Η δεξιοτεχνία του αγαπημένου συγγραφέα πολλών από τους λάτρεις αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων είναι αξιοθαύμαστη καθώς καταφέρνει να δέσει μέσα σε τρία βιβλία μια ολόκληρη ιστορία. Όλα συνδέονται μεταξύ τους και όλα αφορούν το σκοτεινό παρελθόν αλλά και το παρόν των δύο πρωταγωνιστών των βιβλίων Σάμ Μπέργερ και Μόλι Μπλουμ.
Στο 7-1 ο Dahl μας συστήνει με το δίδυμο των ηρώων του μέσα από μια υπόθεση ενός καθ’ έξιν δολοφόνου ο οποίος έχει απαγάγει, όπως όλα δείχνουν στην πορεία, εφτά έφηβες κοπέλες. Ακολουθώντας τα στοιχεία του νήματος καθώς ξετυλίγεται το κουβάρι θα ανασύρουν και οι δύο από τη μνήμη τους τα δικά τους εφηβικά χρόνια και τις «αμαρτωλές» πράξεις τους παρελθόντος. Ο Σαμ αλλά και η Μόλι παλεύουν με τους δαίμονες του παρόντος τους και εκεί που όλα δείχνουν ότι τους ενώνουν έρχονται άλλα τόσα για να τους χωρίσουν. Τα κουτάκια όμως που έχουν θάψει βαθιά στη μνήμη τους έρχονται να τους υπενθυμίσουν τι ήταν αυτό που τους επηρέασε βαθιά ως ανθρώπους αλλά και καθόρισε το ποιοι είναι στο σήμερα.
Στο 6Χ2 πάλι, και ενώ υποθέτουμε ότι έχουμε κλείσει όλες τις ανοιχτές τρύπες του προηγούμενου βιβλίου, ξαφνικά βρισκόμαστε σε μια χαώδη κατάσταση στα πρώτα κεφάλαια ξύνοντας το κεφάλι μας με απορία. Ο ευρηματικός Arne Dahl καταφέρνει να σπείρει την απόλυτη σύγχυση στους αναγνώστες οι οποίοι, είμαι σίγουρη, θα ανατρέξουν στο προηγούμενο βιβλίο ψάχνοντας να δουν τι είναι αυτό που τους έχει ξεφύγει. Αλλά μην ανησυχείτε γιατί όλα είναι μελετημένα με χειρουργική ακρίβεια από τον συγγραφέα και καθώς προχωράει η πλοκή του βιβλίου έρχονται σιγά σιγά όλα να δέσουν και φυσικά να βγάλουν και νόημα. Το 6Χ2 μέσα από τα παρανοϊκά μονοπάτια της πλοκής και της αφήγησης του οδηγεί στο τρίτο βιβλίο της σειράς, το 5+3, που όπως όλα δείχνουν δεν θα είναι και το τελευταίο τελικά.
Ο Dahl αποφάσισε να μας χαρίσει και άλλες συναρπαστικές στιγμές με τον Σαμ και τη Μόλι. Παρόλα αυτά στο 5+3 οι όποιες εκκρεμότητες υπάρχουν ανάμεσα στους δύο ήρωες λύνονται και στο τέλος επέρχεται η κάθαρση για όλους. Στο τρίτο βιβλίο οι αναγνώστες καθώς διαβάζουν θα ανακαλύψουν ότι συνδέεται απόλυτα με το 7-1 συνεχίζοντας την αφήγηση του από εκεί που σταμάτησε το 6Χ2. Ίσως το καλύτερο βιβλίο αυτής της τριλογίας με αλλεπάλληλες ανατροπές που κυριολεκτικά δεν θα πιστεύετε αυτό που διαβάζετε. Ετοιμαστείτε να ξεχάσετε ότι ξέρατε μέχρι τώρα για το ζεύγος Μπέργερ και Μπλουμ και να ανακαλύψετε πόσο διεφθαρμένος είναι ο κόσμος γύρω τους και πόσα παιχνίδια παίζονται πίσω από τις πλάτες τους. Προσοχή να μην σας αποπροσανατολίσουν τα μεσόνερα… Αν θέλετε να βρείτε την επιφάνεια θα πρέπει να ακολουθήσετε τις φυσαλίδες του οξυγόνου.
Ο Arne Dahl στα βιβλία των Μπέργερ και Μπλουμ κάνει στροφή στη γραφή του δημιουργώντας τρία βιβλία με police procedural πλοκή σε σχέση με τα πιο ατμοσφαιρικά μυθιστορήματα που τον είχαμε συνηθίσει στο παρελθόν. Παρόλα αυτά η ποιότητα της γραφής του παραμένει αναλλοίωτη και γίνεται ακόμα πιο εξαιρετική μέσα από την μετάφραση του Γρηγόρη Κονδύλη. Ο Dahl στήνει ένα ευρηματικό παιχνίδι κυνηγητού ενός κακού που απειλεί να κατασπαράξει τους πάντες και να σπείρει τις αμφιβολίες απέναντι στον Σαμ και στη Μόλι ο οποίος δεν την εμπιστεύεται απόλυτα σε κανένα από τα τρία βιβλία. Αλλά τελικά αυτή είναι η μοναδική σανίδα σωτηρίας του και ο άνθρωπος που θα στηριχτεί πάνω του για να καταφέρει να ξεμπερδέψει το κουβάρι της υπόθεσης.
Οι αναφορές στον Άμλετ του Σαίξπηρ και στην Οδύσσεια του Τζέιμς Τζόυς στο 5+3 ουσιαστικά αναβαθμίζουν ολόκληρο το βιβλίο στα μάτια των αναγνωστών προβάλλοντας για ακόμα μια φορά πόσο διαβασμένος είναι και ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας και πόσο έξυπνα έχει καταφέρει να στήσει την πλοκή του βιβλίου. Αν δεν έχετε διαβάσει άλλη φορά Arne Dahl ξεκινήστε με το 7-1, συνεχίστε με το 6Χ2 και τελειώστε με το 5+3 για να μπορέσετε να μπείτε και εσείς στο παρανοϊκό και άκρως μαγευτικό σύμπαν ενός συγγραφέα ο οποίος γνωρίζει πολύ καλά πως να επιλέγει την κάθε παράγραφο, την κάθε λέξη, το κάθε κόμμα αλλά και την κάθε τελεία για να έχει ένα συγκλονιστικό αποτέλεσμα.

At first I found the unrelenting pace not to my liking but as the story evolved and the complexities developed and ticked away, like the mechanics of well oiled Patek Philippe 2508, I began to settle into an enjoyable and clever thriller. In total 7 girls have disappeared and on searching through photographic evidence Berger notices that in a number of pictures, from separate crime scenes, a lady on a bicycle is always present. Her name is Nathalie Freden and if the detectives can successfully trace and connect her to William Larsson, the supposed killer then surely the case can reach a swift and needy conclusion....not so dear readers for in the hands of a very accomplished author nothing is what is seems. Very soon life for Sam Berger is turned upside down and the search is on for a sophisticated killer that stretches back many years where the skills of a murderer are honed and perfected in the seemingly innocent world of a school playground. Kada sam započela čitanje Pustoši, bila sam u dilemi da li da odustanem ili da nastavim. Naravno, desilo se ovo drugo, jer mi roman nije dozvolio da ga ispustim iz ruku. Ovaj kriminalistički nordijski triler je nešto sasvim drugo u odnosu na triler romane na koje je većina nas navikla. Uz sasvim drugačiju atmosferu, pripovedač prati dvoje policajaca, koji tragaju za istinom. Postajući frilenseri, otisnuli su se u nedozvoljenu akciju spašavanja sedam otetih petnaestogodišnjakinja. Sve aktere povezuje neobičan događaj iz prošlosti.
Roman obiluje fantastičnim motivima i simbolima. Kiša – preko koje se očitavaju unutrašnja stanja junaka i dalji sled događaja.
Jasika – treperenje njenog lišća se može posmatrati kao simbol nagona za životom i borbe protiv smrti.
San – vremenska mašina preko koje se osvetljava prošlost.
Junaci Sam Berger i Moli Blum su veoma podrobno okarakterisani. Sviđa mi se način na koji autor „ulazi u svoje junake“ i na svakoj novoj stranici postepeno otkrivamo ponešto novo o njima.
Sa mnoštvo obrta, neočekivanih događaja, likova koje ćete zavoleti i dobrih dijaloga među njima, ovo definitivno postaje jedan od mojih omiljenih krimi-romana. Sa nestrpljenjem očekujem da pročitam nastavak.

I’m a huge lover of Scandinavian crime so I was thrilled to be approved to read Watching You. I had no expectation as I’ve not read anything by him before, so I was hoping for greatness!
Watching You started out really well, as you would expect with a solid and gruesome premise. There were plenty of twists and turns along the way, some that were more shocking than others. There is a great sense of momentum at the beginning of the book and I was intrigued right from the beginning.
I really liked Sam. Typically, he is a flawed and tormented lead detective. I’m drawn to characters like him so I definitely enjoyed his journey during the course of Watching You. I also loved the camaraderie he shared with one of the other characters in the book.
I found that towards the end I was less interested though, It seemed to become detail-heavy and lost its way a little for me personally. In saying that though, it’s an enjoyable read. Nothing new in the Scandinavian crime genre, but still a good read.
Recommended if you’re a new convert to Scandinavian crime thrillers!

Το νέο βιβλίο του Arne Dahl κυκλοφόρησε πριν λίγες μέρες από τις Εκδόσεις Μεταίχμιο. Πρόκειται για το πρώτο βιβλίο μιας νέας σειράς και φέρει τον τίτλο “Επτά μείον ένα”. Ένα καθηλωτικό αστυνομικό θρίλερ που κόβει την ανάσα!
Η Έλεν είναι ένα δεκαπεντάχρονο κορίτσι που έχει εξαφανιστεί. Ο Σαμ Μπέργερ είναι σίγουρος ότι έχει πέσει θύμα απαγωγής, όπως και δύο άλλες κοπέλες στην ηλικία της Έλεν. Με λίγα λόγια υποψιάζεται πως πρόκειται για έναν καθ’ έξη απαγωγέα και εν δυνάμει δολοφόνο. Οι συνάδελφοί του, και ιδιαίτερα το αφεντικό του, δεν πιστεύουν το ίδιο. Ο Σαμ όμως έχει λόγους να το πιστεύει, καθώς υποψιάζεται ότι ο δράστης κρύβεται στο παρελθόν του.
Όλα τα στοιχεία της παράλληλης και μυστικής έρευνας που κάνει ο Σαμ δείχνουν στο ίδιο σημείο. Τα πράγματα δυσκολεύουν όταν στο παιχνίδι μπαίνει ένα ακόμη άτομο από το παρελθόν και φέρνει τους φόβους του Σαμ στην επιφάνεια. Γιατί ο απαγωγέας αφήνει στοιχεία πίσω του για να τα βρει ο Σαμ; Που οδηγεί όλο αυτό; Η Μόλι Μπλουμ από την υπηρεσία ασφαλείας θα βρεθεί στο πλευρό του, έστω κι αν αυτή δεν ήταν η αρχική της επιλογή και μαζί θα προσπαθήσουν να ξετυλίξουν το κουβάρι με τα ερωτήματα.
Όπως καταλαβαίνει ο αναγνώστης πρόκειται για μια νέα σειρά βιβλίων, με το συγκεκριμένο να είναι το πρώτο αυτής και τα οποία φαίνεται να έχουν σαν βασικούς χαρακτήρες το Σαμ Μπέργερ και τη Μόλι Μπλουμ. Είναι ένα καθαρό police procedural που όμως συναρπάζει με τη λογική που ακολουθεί και την πλοκή που δε σταματά να εκπλήσσει. Ο συγγραφέας μα δίνει ένα πολύ δυνατό αστυνομικό θρίλερ δύο διαστάσεων.
Από τη μια έχουμε την υπόθεση που ερευνά ο Σαμ, αυτή της εξαφάνισης της Έλεν, που μάλλον είναι απαγωγή και μάλλον συνδέεται με τις εξαφανίσεις δύο άλλων κοριτσιών. Τα στοιχεία που ενώνουν τις τρεις υποθέσεις δεν είναι ξεκάθαρα στον αναγνώστη, φαίνεται όμως πως είναι αρκετά ξεκάθαρα στο μυαλό του ήρωα που σιγά σιγά δίνει κάποια στοιχεία μέσα από την εξέλιξη της ιστορίας. Δεν είναι ότι δεν ξέρουμε ποιος είναι ο δράστης, αφού ο ήρωας τον έχει ήδη στο μυαλό του από την αρχή και άλλωστε το μαθαίνει και ο αναγνώστης αρκετά νωρίς. Το ζητούμενο είναι να χτιστεί έτσι η πλοκή ώστε να γίνει πιστευτή η επιλογή του δράστη, κάτι που γίνεται από την αρχή και μέχρι το τέλος του βιβλίου, αν και ενδιάμεσα, οι ανατροπές είναι τέτοιες που κάνουν ακόμα και τους ήρωες ν αμφιβάλλουν αν τελικά έχουν τον σωστό άνθρωπο στο στόχαστρο.
Από την άλλη έχουμε το προσωπικό δράμα του ήρωα, που αχνοφαίνεται από τους εφιάλτες που τον βασανίζουν και από τα μυστικά μονοπάτια που ακολουθεί η σκέψη του για να τον οδηγήσει στα δικά του συμπεράσματα όσον αφορά στο δράστη. Ο αναγνώστης δεν μαθαίνει για το παρελθόν και τα όσα βαραίνουν τον ήρωα, παρά μόνο όταν αυτό εξυπηρετεί την πλοκή της ιστορίας. Μέχρι τότε λαμβάνει ψήγματα μόνο των όσων πραγματικά συνέβησαν και όσων θα μπορούσαν να έχουν σημαδέψει το Σαμ. Η αδυναμία και η δειλία του είναι αυτά που προκαλούν τις τύψεις και ενισχύουν τους εφιάλτες που συνεχίζει να βλέπει. Τι όμως οδήγησε εκεί, είναι ένα τελείως διαφορετικό θέμα.
Το γεγονός ότι οι αστυνομικές αρχές δεν πιστεύουν ότι στη Σουηδία υπάρχουν καθ’ έξη δολοφόνοι, είναι το στοιχείο που βοηθά απίστευτα στην πλοκή της ιστορίας. Μόνο έτσι θα μπορούσε να ενισχυθεί αρχικά η επιλογή του Σαμ να ξεκινήσει μια παράλληλη μυστική έρευνα. Τουλάχιστον μέχρι του σημείου που αποκαλύπτονται οι φόβοι για το παρελθόν, τον δράστη και πως αυτός συνδέεται με τον Σαμ. Πολύ μεγάλο θέμα να πιστεύει κανείς πως η χώρα που ζει δεν κινδυνεύει ή δεν μαστίζεται από ολότελα τρελούς ανθρώπους που θα μπορούσαν να κάνουν κακό κατ’ εξακολούθηση. Εδώ τίθεται το ερώτημα του πόσο ασφαλείς νομίζουμε ότι είμαστε αλλά και πόσο ασφαλείς είμαστε τελικά! Όταν δε αυτή η άρνηση έρχεται από τα σώματα προστασίας του πολίτη, τα πράγματα χειροτερεύουν. Οι ειδικοί θα έπρεπε πάντα να έχουν ανοιχτό μυαλό και πιο ολοκληρωμένη άποψη.
Θέλω να μιλήσω και για το άλλο μεγάλο θέμα που θέτει ο συγγραφέας και ουσιαστικά βάζει το σπόρο για σκέψη, αλλά πολύ φοβάμαι πως θα παρασυρθώ και θα αποκαλύψω κομμάτια του βιβλίου που συμβάλλουν στην πλοκή και δεν θα το ήθελα. Θα πω μόνο ότι αφού το διαβάσει κανείς, μπαίνει σε σκέψεις. Πράγματα που μπορεί να θεωρούμε αθώα ή με όχι και τόσο μεγάλο αντίκτυπο, τα τελευταία χρόνια έρχονται στην επιφάνεια σαν πολύ κακές καταστάσεις που φέρουν πάνω τους τα δεινά όλου του κόσμου. Ας είμαστε λοιπόν λίγο πιο προσεχτικοί στη συμπεριφορά μας.

Όπως καταλαβαίνει ο αναγνώστης πρόκειται για μια νέα σειρά βιβλίων, με το συγκεκριμένο να είναι το πρώτο αυτής και τα οποία φαίνεται να έχουν σαν βασικούς χαρακτήρες το Σαμ Μπέργερ και τη Μόλι Μπλουμ. Είναι ένα καθαρό police procedural που όμως συναρπάζει με τη λογική που ακολουθεί και την πλοκή που δε σταματά να εκπλήσσει. Ο συγγραφέας μα δίνει ένα πολύ δυνατό αστυνομικό θρίλερ δύο διαστάσεων.
Από τη μια έχουμε την υπόθεση που ερευνά ο Σαμ, αυτή της εξαφάνισης της Έλεν, που μάλλον είναι απαγωγή και μάλλον συνδέεται με τις εξαφανίσεις δύο άλλων κοριτσιών. Τα στοιχεία που ενώνουν τις τρεις υποθέσεις δεν είναι ξεκάθαρα στον αναγνώστη, φαίνεται όμως πως είναι αρκετά ξεκάθαρα στο μυαλό του ήρωα που σιγά σιγά δίνει κάποια στοιχεία μέσα από την εξέλιξη της ιστορίας. Δεν είναι ότι δεν ξέρουμε ποιος είναι ο δράστης, αφού ο ήρωας τον έχει ήδη στο μυαλό του από την αρχή και άλλωστε το μαθαίνει και ο αναγνώστης αρκετά νωρίς. Το ζητούμενο είναι να χτιστεί έτσι η πλοκή ώστε να γίνει πιστευτή η επιλογή του δράστη, κάτι που γίνεται από την αρχή και μέχρι το τέλος του βιβλίου, αν και ενδιάμεσα, οι ανατροπές είναι τέτοιες που κάνουν ακόμα και τους ήρωες ν αμφιβάλλουν αν τελικά έχουν τον σωστό άνθρωπο στο στόχαστρο.
Από την άλλη έχουμε το προσωπικό δράμα του ήρωα, που αχνοφαίνεται από τους εφιάλτες που τον βασανίζουν και από τα μυστικά μονοπάτια που ακολουθεί η σκέψη του για να τον οδηγήσει στα δικά του συμπεράσματα όσον αφορά στο δράστη. Ο αναγνώστης δεν μαθαίνει για το παρελθόν και τα όσα βαραίνουν τον ήρωα, παρά μόνο όταν αυτό εξυπηρετεί την πλοκή της ιστορίας. Μέχρι τότε λαμβάνει ψήγματα μόνο των όσων πραγματικά συνέβησαν και όσων θα μπορούσαν να έχουν σημαδέψει το Σαμ. Η αδυναμία και η δειλία του είναι αυτά που προκαλούν τις τύψεις και ενισχύουν τους εφιάλτες που συνεχίζει να βλέπει. Τι όμως οδήγησε εκεί, είναι ένα τελείως διαφορετικό θέμα.
Το γεγονός ότι οι αστυνομικές αρχές δεν πιστεύουν ότι στη Σουηδία υπάρχουν καθ’ έξη δολοφόνοι, είναι το στοιχείο που βοηθά απίστευτα στην πλοκή της ιστορίας. Μόνο έτσι θα μπορούσε να ενισχυθεί αρχικά η επιλογή του Σαμ να ξεκινήσει μια παράλληλη μυστική έρευνα. Τουλάχιστον μέχρι του σημείου που αποκαλύπτονται οι φόβοι για το παρελθόν, τον δράστη και πως αυτός συνδέεται με τον Σαμ. Πολύ μεγάλο θέμα να πιστεύει κανείς πως η χώρα που ζει δεν κινδυνεύει ή δεν μαστίζεται από ολότελα τρελούς ανθρώπους που θα μπορούσαν να κάνουν κακό κατ’ εξακολούθηση. Εδώ τίθεται το ερώτημα του πόσο ασφαλείς νομίζουμε ότι είμαστε αλλά και πόσο ασφαλείς είμαστε τελικά! Όταν δε αυτή η άρνηση έρχεται από τα σώματα προστασίας του πολίτη, τα πράγματα χειροτερεύουν. Οι ειδικοί θα έπρεπε πάντα να έχουν ανοιχτό μυαλό και πιο ολοκληρωμένη άποψη.
Θέλω να μιλήσω και για το άλλο μεγάλο θέμα που θέτει ο συγγραφέας και ουσιαστικά βάζει το σπόρο για σκέψη, αλλά πολύ φοβάμαι πως θα παρασυρθώ και θα αποκαλύψω κομμάτια του βιβλίου που συμβάλλουν στην πλοκή και δεν θα το ήθελα. Θα πω μόνο ότι αφού το διαβάσει κανείς, μπαίνει σε σκέψεις. Πράγματα που μπορεί να θεωρούμε αθώα ή με όχι και τόσο μεγάλο αντίκτυπο, τα τελευταία χρόνια έρχονται στην επιφάνεια σαν πολύ κακές καταστάσεις που φέρουν πάνω τους τα δεινά όλου του κόσμου. Ας είμαστε λοιπόν λίγο πιο προσεχτικοί στη συμπεριφορά μας.

Evo jednog kontroverznog mišljenja, ali meni je ovo super.
Shvatila sam da mi ovaj žanr jako leži trenutno i ne znam samo što sam toliko dugo čekala da probam knjige Dokaz izdavaštva iz ove edicije.
No, na stranu to, činjenica je da bi neko ovaj roman nazvao laganim ili trivijalnim, ali meni se upravo zbog toga, a ne uprkos tome, dopada. A kako mi je ova čitalačka godina u neku ruku katastrofalna, svaka knjiga koja me imalo zabavi, ne dosadi mi u sred dešavanja i drži mi pažnju zaslužuje visoku ocenu, pa nek je ta ocena malo i poklonjena.
Generalno, mogu ovo da zamislim kao neki triler film koji bih gledala neke kišne večeri u novembru i zabavila se, ali vrlo brzo verovatno zaboravila na njega. Mislim da je to dovoljno dobra slika radnje i atmosfere ove knjige.
No, da ću nastaviti sa ovim serijalom - što pre!

Savršena stvar za maglovite novembarske dane. Pustoš je odlično napisano djelo koje tiho korača triler žanrom i stvara jednu jezivu atmosferu.
Moram da priznam, prvih nekoliko poglavlja su prilično teška za čitanje i sve to zbog manira pisanja koji dolazi od toga da autor ovom djelu pristupa iz nešto drugačijeg ugla na koji nismo navikli u ovom žanru, ali nakon toga pisanje je ono što ovaj roman čini tako mračnim, pametnim i zanimljivim.
Stvarno mi se dopao lik glavne protagonistkinje koji je toliko zanimljiv da ovu knjigu ne možete ispustiti iz ruku tek tako.
Ostao sam pozitivno iznenađen djelom i mislim da ću rado nastaviti da čitam druge nastavke u serijalu.

Utisci nakon prvog čitanja:
Još jedna knjiga u izdanju Dokaz izdavaštva i još jedno oduševljenje! Toliko hvalim njihove knjige kao da je u pitanju moja izdavačka kuća. Ali sada mogu da tvrdim kako definitivno vode računa koje će knjige objaviti, vode računa o dizajnu korica, prelom teksta u knjigama je dobro odrađen. Sve je na najvišem nivou!
Što se tiče ovog romana - jezivo dobar roman. Više puta sam se naježio, nekoliko puta i zgadio. Ali to je valjda odlika dobrog trilera, kada u tebi probudi mučninu ali si isto vremeno i željan da vidiš šta će da bude dalje. Nekoliko nepredvidljivih obrta i karakteristični likovi su upečatljivi i roman se ne ispušta iz ruku.
Ono što je zanimlijvo u vezi sa ovim romanom, jeste to da on počinje u momentu vršenja istrage nakon zločina, tj. praćenje jednog traga. To na početku možda deluje malo konfuzno, ali ubrzo saznajemo zašto su policajci tu i dobijamo detaljniji uvid u zločin koji je počinjen.
Roman je uzbudljiv, lako se čita i definitivno je vredan pažnje. Blum mi je posebno zanimljiv lik - od jezivog do veoma zanimljivog. Tako nešto nisam skoro doživeo. Definitivno sve pohvale i sve preporuke!
Utisci nakon drugog čitanja:
Kako je izdavačka kuća Dokaz vrlo skoro izdala treći deo serijala Berger&Blum, rešio sam da pre nego što pročitam njega pročitam prva dva dela. Da ne bih pisao posebne utiske o ovom romanu, samo ću dopuniti prvobitne utiske. Nekako imam potrebu da ponovo pišem o ovom romanu.
Kao što sam već spomenuo, serijal se zove Berger i Blum. Međutim, način na koji dolazimo do Blum je zapanjujući. Zaboravio sam da treba da bude još jedan glavni lik. Čak me je i čudilo zašto Blum, kada se Bergerov partner zove Dir. I to je samo jedan od pokazatelja koliki je Arne majstor svog zanata.
Roman je prepun obrta, neočekivanih momenata. Taman kad mislite da ste nešto shvatili ili povezali, on vam izokrene čitavo razmišljanje naglavačke. Počev od Blumove, pa sve do rasvetljenja zločina.
Već na prvim stranicama autor nas uvodi u veoma gadan zločin, odnosno mesto zločina. Time nam pokazuje da nas očekuje jedna vrlo neprijatna i mučna vožnja. Ali nas ujedno i interesuje za nastavak. Roman sam „gutao“ i jedva sam čekao da saznam šta će biti dalje. Kako sam ga čitao relativno davno, sećao sam se samo pojedinih detalja. I baš ti detalji mi nisu kvarili užitak ponovnog čitanja. Na primer, za Blum sam skroz zaboravio.
Moram priznati da imam osećaj da sam pod mnogo jačim utiskom nakon drugog čitanja. Mislim da to nema toliko veze sa samim romanom, koliko sa mojim ličnim raspoloženjem. Ovih dana mi je baš trebalo nešto da mi ljulja kefalo i da me „muči“ na taj način. Zaista, ovaj roman okupira vaš um u potpunosti. Baš je jedan od onih romana koji jedva čekate da uzmete u ruke nakon posla samo da saznate šta se dalje dešava.
Tandem Berger i Blum je vrlo zanimljiv. Čini mi se da niko neće nadmašiti Kormoran i Robin dvojac (romani Roberta Galbrajta). Ipak, moram da priznam da mi je Blum veoma draga. I od nje u nastavku očekujem dosta akcije. Sa druge strane Berger mi je veoma zanimljiv lik. I ta misterija zašto se toliko fokusira na satove i opise mi je bila zanimljiva. Naravno, do kraja romana dobijamo odgovor, ali prosto mi je bilo zanimljivo da se i to spominje. Deluje kao neka sitnica, a zapravo je jedan vrlo zanimljiv hobi.
Pustoš je roman čiji je tempo radnje brz, konstantno se nešto dešava i prosto nema pauze. Stalno dolazite do novih zaključaka, dešavaju se novi obrti i prosto nemate vremena ni vazduh propisno da udahnete. Definitivno su mi se utisci o ovom romanu popravili i Arne Dal ima moje simpatije. Nije da ga ranije nisam gotivio, ali nekako mi se činilo da mu fali još nešto da bi bio najbolji. Ipak, ovoga puta utisak se popravio. I slobodno mogu da kažem da sa velikim nestrpljenjem čekam da čitam nastavak romana.

I hadn't head of Arne Dahl before this book had been offered to me. Turned to be a really nice surprise.
A young girl disappears and there is no trace of her anywhere. Other 15 year old girls have disappeared also and it's a case that Detective Sam Berger and his team are cased to solve. One night whilst entering a farmhouse it becomes clear that the place is booby trapped and a man goes down. It's a shocking moment that leaves the police officers nervous as the farmhouse is searched for any clues that might lead to the missing girl.
As the investigation goes on events lead to thoughts of a serial killer being on the loose. Berger is convinced that this is the case though he has a tough time convincing his superiors. So much so that Berger, together with a partner, has to move away from the rest of his policing team and effectively work alone in tracking down the killer. Dahl has written a frantically paced, stylish thriller that totally had me hooked. Yes, it was a little over the top at times and well plausibility was somewhat stretched but that didn't matter as I really enjoyed it and couldn't stop reading for the most part. I loved Berger's character and that of his sidekick (I won't say who, find out for yourselves!) and the way they worked together. Second guessing one another's moves and trying to preempt what the other will do. And the tie in with clocks and timepieces was fascinating.
Watching You is a high octane thriller that had me ..... well..... thrilled. I'm very much looking forward to the next instalment in what could potentially be a great series. Highly recommend.

Mit dem Einstieg in das Buch habe ich mich eher schwer getan, denn man landet ohne große Erklärungen mitten in dem Fall. Man weiß nicht so wirklich worum es geht und die Personen kennt man erst Recht nicht. Meiner Meinung ist das bei einem Thriller nicht so geschickt.
Es hat gut 100 Seiten gedauert bis ich mich in dem Geschehen zurecht gefunden habe und dann auch mal ein wenig Spannung aufkam. Hier hatte ich dann wirklich Hoffnung, dass mich das Buch nun endlich gepackt hat, aber leider war die Euphorie schnell wieder vorbei. Es gibt leider so wenige Spannungsmomente, auch wenn mich die Handlung öfter mal überraschen konnte.
Über weite Strecken dominierte bei mir leider die Langeweile und die Geschichte konnte mich einfach nicht packen. Zu den beiden Ermittlern konnte ich auch keine Verbindung aufbauen und so richtig haben die beiden für mich nicht funktioniert. Außerdem war mir vieles in der Geschichte zu sprunghaft und ich hatte Probleme manchen Abläufen zu folgen.
Dies war mein erster Dahl. Ich bin leicht enttäuscht und hatte mir doch ein wenig mehr versprochen. Da der Schreibstil jedoch generell gut zu lesen und der Fall an sich auch interessant, würde ich wieder etwas von ihm lesen.

Wauw!! Ik had dit boek in 2018 al gelezen (tijdens een leesdip) en vond hem toen echt niet zo goed, zeg maar 2 sterren. Toch besloten hem nu opnieuw te lezen en ik ben heel blij dat ik dat gedaan heb. Wat een goed boek!! zo zie je maar dat je geen boeken moet beoordelen als je in een leesdip zit.
Wauw!! Ik had dit boek in 2018 al gelezen (tijdens een leesdip) en vond hem toen echt niet zo goed, zeg maar 2 sterren. Toch besloten hem nu opnieuw te lezen en ik ben heel blij dat ik dat gedaan heb. Wat een goed boek!! zo zie je maar dat je geen boeken moet beoordelen als je in een leesdip zit.

Εξαιρετικός Dahl για άλλη μία φορά.Με πολύ ανανεωμένη γραφή,μας συστήνει δύο βασικούς νέους πρωταγωνιστές και δύο (τουλάχιστον) πολύ ενδιαφέροντες συναδέλφους τους,οι οποίοι μπλέκονται σε μια ιστορία μεγάλου πόνου,ψυχικού και σωματικού,αλλά και μεγάλης προδοσίας-με Π,όπως λέει και ο Σαμ Μπέργερ.Στους φίλους (και οπαδούς τολμώ να πω,του συγγραφέα)θα πρότεινα να το ξεκινήσουν χωρίς να διαβάσουν αναλυτικές κριτικές-για να μπουν σελίδα σελίδα σε αυτόν τον παρανοϊκό κόσμο,και να χτύπησει η αγωνία κόκκινο χωρίς καμιά ιδέα για το τι ακολουθεί.
