The Best Book Novel I have read till date on Chstrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Unlike the others majority books, this book starts with coronation &has sad ending. But ot gives the insight of struggle & concerns of Maharaj as father & the King post Coronation. None the less, Must read & must to have in your shelve.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a god-like figure for all Marathis who was all-knowing, ever-powerful warrior-king. But, this demigod faced same household problems that we, mere mortals, face in the everyday life.
The book starts with Rajyabhishek ceremony of Chh Shivaji Maharaj. Main characters of his Ashtapradhan like Moropant Pingale, Annajipant Datto, Balaji Chitnis, Hambir Rao Mohite are really brought alive with very different personalities. It beautifully brings alive lively and royal scenes from the ceremony. This was the pinnacle of the professional success and personal happiness that Shivaji Maharaj had in his life.
Things kinda went downhill from here. The book depicts his struggles of coping with loss of Rajmata Jijau just 12 days after the coronation ceremony. The relationship between the Chhatrapati and Yuvraj Sambhaji kind of went downhill as well, which is shown as major source of turmoil for him. Yuvraj Sambhaji Maharaj is an adventurous young fellow who is impressionable. With death of Rajmata Jijau, the sobering effect that Rajmata had on him is lost. Kavi Kalash here is shown as an unsavoury influence on the Yuvraj, who leads him down the path of Tantric practices. All this leads to differences between the Chhatrapati and Yuvraj which ultimately culminates in defection of Yuvraj Sambhaji Maharaj to Mughals for a brief period.
The dichotomy between the father’s concern and king’s anger at this defection is beautifully illustrated here. Reader begins to feel the helplessness and dejection that Shivaji Maharaj must have felt. He, who built Swarajya from nothing seems overwhelmed by the tantrums of his teenager. The machinations of Soyarabai and her coterie brings more turmoil. The affection that Shivaji Maharaj felt in company of Saibai is sharply contrasted with detachment that he felt with Soyarabai.
The circumstances of end moments of the Chhatrapati fills reader with abject sadness. He, who brought down Mughals, Adils and Nizams to his knees, dies due to short illness of health and long malady of heart.
writing is good... But very different perspective written in this book, which is contrasting other books like chhava here, it is shown that, there is not good relationship between Shivaji maharaj and sambhaji maharaj Sambhaji maharaj always in tantrik pooja/havans, which shivaji maharaj doesn't like, then his misbehavior with Godavari(daughter of annajidatto) leads to frustration to shivaji maharaj; he shouts at him; and asks him to go to Shrungarpur, and he himself goes to South India!! he returns after 2 years to Raigad, samhaji maharaj doesn't come to meet shivaji maharaj, and keeps him busy in Tantrik poojas; later shivaji mahraj advice sambhaji maharaj to send to Sajjangad to meet ramdas swami; but from there samhaji maharaj leaves, and goes to Mughal! This is very big shock to Maratha empire; shivaji mahraj goes to help adilshahi; and later wants to go to Aurangabad to capture Muajjam, in between he loots Jalnapur and nearby mughali areas; but couldn't go to Aurangabad! and to avoid war with mughals, goes to Pattagad(Vishramgad); there he comes to know sambhaji maharaj coming back to panhala! after 8 days, he leaves for panhala to meet sambhaji; but doesn't meet him for 4-5 days. later sambhaji maharaj comes to meet shivaji maharaj and tells him everything, but maharaj doesn't talk with him. later he calls him and scolds him. and later keeps him in najarkaid and leaves to raigad; in between goes to sajjangad. after reaching raigad, there is wedding function of ramraje with prataprao gujar's daughter. and after that, he becomes ill
