A great start to a new series. The Firefighters of Montana.
Tracy Solheim is a new to me author. I will read more of her works. I like her lovely writing style.
This is such an engaging story and a perfectly paced contemporary romance revolving around hot smokejumpers.
For some reason which I’m not entirely sure why but Chris Hemsworth came to mind when reading about the hero, Sam. I don’t mind, he is one hot dude as is our Sam 😂
Within minutes of meeting there was a romantic attraction between Captain Cowboy aka Sam and Laurel. Sizzle sizzle. Little Tyson was adorable, he almost stole the show. Yeah, I see you Chris, errr I mean Sam 🤣 I did say almost 🤣
Good fun reading and learning about smokejumpers. An unusual and interesting line of work.
Tis a great little big romance. Go check it out, this book will have you swooning.
This is a great start to a fabulous new series about smoke jumpers these guys are strong and determined they work hard and fast to stop fires and save lives and they are just what every girl needs in their lives if you can cope with the danger. This is from a new to me author Tracy Solheim and I loved it and will be looking out for more of her stories.
Ex Army ranger Sam Gaskill has arrived in Glacier Creek Montana from Texas to take on the captains role at the smoke jumpers he as arrived with his late wife's horse Tabitha and has her boarded at the local Whispering Breeze Ranch where he hopes that the owners can bring a wish to fruition for his wife and that is to have Tabitha win the finals at the quarter horse championships Sam has a lot of issues from his past and wants nothing more than to get on with his life but I think this is about to change when he meets Laurel Keenan daughter of the owners of the ranch the spark between them could start a fire.
Laurel Keenan is a single mum and lives at the ranch works hard she has been through what she thought was love with an champion snow boarder and getting involved with someone is not what she wants her life now evolves around her 5 year old son Tyson but she cannot deny the pull that she has when first meeting Sam but of course Laurel is known for speaking before she thinks and this has Sam on his toes. What is in store for Laurel will she be able to overcome her past and get on with the future?
This is a sizzling story for two people who had both been burnt in the past there is a lot of emotion flying of the pages and neither of them can deny this spark this lustful passion that shoots between them can they overcome their pasts together? This is really a beautifully written story that gives Sam and Laurel the chance to find love again it is fast paced emotional and a thoroughly enjoyable read that had me turning the pages I do highly recommend this one.
Smolder by Tracy Solheim Firefighters of Montana series #1. Multiple authors collection. Contemporary romance. Sam Gaskill is starting a new life in Glacier Creek, Montana. He’s accepted a challenging job of captain for a group of smoke jumpers there as well as selling his late wife’s horse to a trainer. He has no intention of starting a new relationship let alone fall in love, but Laurel Keenan and her son are irresistible. Laurel is pressured to take on the training of the new horse. She has the skills and experience but is skittish herself to the commitment. She knows people don’t stay and a dangerous job is just another way of leaving. Sam and Laurel are draw to each other but neither want more than casual. But feeling grow and the question needs to be asked. Can they make it work?
I can’t imagine how hard it would be to have family away for long periods and not know if they are safe and well. I do believe you need to live in the moment. Sam and Laurel have scars to overcome so the story has drama and angst and a wake up call before they know what they want. The child and her ex ramp up the drama but also add depth to the overall relationships. Warmhearted romance. Plus a firefighter hero.
I was happy to find this book about smokejumpers. To me, they are the ultimate hero. Jumping out of planes into forests to put out fires is dangerous work that only the most skilled firefighters can do. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Sam was the new captain of the smokejumpers in Glacier Creek, Montana. It's a big change from his life as a Ranger and coming from Texas but he's up for the challenge. Wanting to fulfill his late wife's dream, he took her showhorse with him, boarding her at Whispering Breeze Ranch. While she was there, they were to work with her so she would be ready to compete at the highest level and hopefully win the world title.
Laurel was the woman who would train the horse. I loved how she didn't have a filter, saying things before thinking. Her life revolved around her young son and she had no intention of getting involved with a man. Especially not a thrill-seeker like her son's father. She was surprised by the intensity of her feelings for Sam. It was much more than just appreciating his ass. Sam was just as surprised by his attraction to Laurel because that hadn't happened since he lost his wife. Will they let go of their pasts and move on?
This is a wonderful romance that had me sighing, smiling and biting my nails. If you like tension-filled romance, I definitely recommend Smolder.
Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. We have Sam and Laurel, to very stubborn people, who are attracted to each other and not sure if they are willing to put their hearts on the line again. I always love stories of firefighters, and military men, so right there it had one me over, I loved the rest of the guys, it was cute story, and kept me fairly interest, new series, hopefully will keep my interest, enjoy.
This was a smokin hot read with a red hot hero. Not a lot of depth but heaps of chemistry and a plot to go along with it. Steamy with a dash of charm. New author for me. A nice quick read.
Oh How I loved this book. I'm a sucker for soldiers and sucker for firefighters - so both in one man? I couldn't asked for more. Well written, sexy and good.
Starting over can be difficult under the best circumstances. But when starting over means carrying the ghosts of a guilt ridden past into the precarious and uncharted territory of a tenuous future. Forging bright and shiny new paths can be almost impossible.
Unless, of course, the man doing the impossible is former Army Ranger, Sam Gaskill. Whether making himself at home in his new role as captain of a highly skilled smoke jumpers. Or attempting to find a training facility for his late wife's beloved made. Sam is a man determined to do his duty, and make things right for all concerned. No matter the personal price.
Convinced that the thrill of fighting fires and saving lives will always be enough, Sam is completely unprepared for the effect that one bold, brash, and exceptionally beautiful horsewoman will have on his libedo. Or the restorative effect that time spent with her 5-year old son, will have on his battered soul.
At just under 150 pages, Smolder is a read that manages to pack a well paced, seamlessly crafted, and remarkably complex plot into quite a diminutive package. Further sweeting the already delectable story pot, is a cast of instantaneously relatable characters, intelligent and naturally occurring character interaction, and a romance that balances passion's heat with emotional depth.
While the rapid fire pacing of this story does put Sam and leading lady Laurel's attraction at the story's forefront, right from the start. The strong personalities of both our leading man, and his lady, make their frying pan to fire leap both an effortless and a natural one.
Not one to rest her story's success solely in the hands of fickle hearts. Authoress, Tracy Solheim, gives readers healthy doses of action, suspense, and drama at every turn. Clearly aware that 'the devil is in the details'. Ms. Solheim's thorough descriptions of every aspect of both Sam and Laurel's working lives, gives readers that front row seat. Thereby, elevating this book out of the realm of story, and into that of experience.
Not to be forgotten or outshone. Young Tyson proves to be quite the effective touchstone for both emotional and dramatic aspects of the plot. His youthful exuberance and openhearted innocence stand as both teacher and much needed balm to the jaded perspectives and wary hearts of his elders.
Reviewer's Note: I was provided with a copy of the above referenced literary work in exchange for my honest review.
Story of a single mother artist/former horse competitor/ studying to be CPA so she can support her son and a former soldier/firecaptain/widower with guilt who brings his dead wives horse to Montana from Texas to get her prepared to compete/be sold as well as to take on the job of chief of the "smokejumpers" who jump out of planes to fight fires. Whew. That's a lot of stuff going on and I left a few things out. This book reminds me of a Lifetime movie plot.
What I liked, the characters were interesting and had smoking hot chemistry. Her ex wasn't just a cardboard jerk and though not perfect, I liked how the author had him grow as a parent and that they weren't hateful to each other.
What it lacked for me: The characters don't spend enough time together and the sudden love didn't have the "feel". Secondary characters were interesting but there were so many it felt like this was a second or third book in a series. Not enough romance. Side plots that went nowhere. The author hinted at a strain in the relationship between the h and her father and also her subverting her desire to be an artist but they just fizzled out.
The author obviously knows about smokejumpers and the forest service but too much of that and not enough romance make it ok and entertaining but not a re-read for me.
SMOLDER was an entertaining and spicy read that helped me pass a few hours. Since it's the first in a series there is a lot of setup for future books and I'll admit I was a little overwhelmed by the number of characters being introduced, especially for a book that's only about 200 pages. That being said, Sam and Laurel have pretty good chemistry once they get over their initial antagonistic meeting. Of course, both are incredibly resistant to the idea of a relationship so they try to keep things casual instead.
While I liked Sam and Laurel together they weren't individually my favorite characters. Laurel has one of the worst cases of foot-in-the-mouth and she says some pretty bad things early on. But I did like her journey of accepting what she really wants in life and not giving up her dreams just because she's a single mother. Sam is pretty stoic and close-minded about getting involved with another woman. In the beginning Sam throws around the "my wife is dead" card a few times to push Laurel away and I wasn't crazy about that because he made it seem like he was grieving over a lost love when he really wasn't. Not to say that Sam didn't care for his late wife, but it's more complicated than it appears.
Overall, I enjoyed this while I was reading it but it just didn't make a lasting impression for me.
Start of the newest series of "Firefighters of Montana" Did not disappoint! loved it! Sam Gaskill former Army ranger starting over in Montana and as far away as possible of memories of his late wife. He takes on his new role of Captain Smoke jumper, boarding his late wifes horse with Laurel and her father. Laurel Keenan, champion horsewoman, couldn’t wait to escape her hometown after an unexpected pregnancy moves her back to her fathers ranch. Not really sure if she can risk or own and her sone=s heart on such a thrill seeker like Sam. A wonderful romance all about letting go of the past and starting over. Great charecter and setting
Smolder by Tracy Solheim Firefighters of Montana #1
Smolder indeed! Great book! I enjoyed it from beginning to end and recommend it to those looking for a fun way to spend a few hours in Montana.
After looking online I found that five authors have worked together to create this series of books that deal with sizzling hot men who work as smokejumpers but also as search and rescue patrol and live in a base camp on forest service land in Montana. Each of the potential men and women who will star in their own romance novels is introduced in this first book and I have to say I am intrigued by more than one of the characters and eager to read their stories if they are even half as good as this one!
So, in this book…Captain Sam Gaskill has been hired to be in charge of the team of firefighters and has recently moved to town. He has brought his deceased wife’s horse to be stabled and trained at the Keenan ranch. He meets Laurel Keenan and her son Tyler almost immediately and there is a strong pull between the two of them. With both being rather impulsive it doesn’t take much time for them to heat up the sheets BUT with both also being leery of commitment there are some things for the two of them to work through if they are to have a HEA.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tule Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
"Smolder" by Tracy Solheim is book one in the "Firefighters of Montana" series, which is a series that is written by multiple authors. First off, the cover is absolutely beautiful, and second, who doesn't love a story about a firefighter? Tracy did an amazing job with this book, and the characters were absolutely wonderful to read. Laurel is back home on her families ranch helping out, and Sam has his late wife's horse, Tabitha, that he wants to have trained. Laurel is the one that is taking on the training of Tabitha, and she falls in love with the horse. She is trying to keep Sam at arms length because she has already been burned by her, 5 year old son, Tyson's father. Sam is still getting over his wife's death and throws himself into his work as the new fire captain of the search and rescue team. One of my favorite scenes was when Tyson was out in the barn and showed Sam something that his mother, Laurel, drew. Tyson is so innocent and has so many worries that a little boy shouldn't have to worry about. The way that Sam steps up and comforts Tyson is absolutely adorable. I read this book in one sitting and would read it again.
Really quick read! Sweet story about loosing and loving again. About second chance at real romance. About family and friends. And about knowing when you a good thing, even if it takes a little bit.
I think this was a pretty well rounded story. I felt like there was a ton of details packed into it, but it didn't feel like too much! The drama factor was understandable, nothing too far fetch, but it didn't drag on for too long.
I think Solheim did a great job with character development with such a short story!
HEA, some spice (2.5-3 out of 5), animals and love. What more could you want? lol
The thrill of danger helps him forget the pain of loss. Can the love of a good woman help him learn to live again? Sam is a man on a mission. Start over and leave the past behind. A new town and an adventurous job should be just what he needs to escape the helpless guilt and grief that has been his constant companion. What he doesn't count on is finding a second chance at love. Smolder is as intense as it's title, but the beauty of Ms. Solheim is she can deliver breathless romance while crafting a heart-stopping thrill.
i am hooked on this series! the romance itself was kinda meh. there was more internal angst than i like. the whole guilt over the wife and her death and the never again with a risk taker actually detracted from the story for me. i don't think you could have gone with out it, but what drew me in was the reclaiming of passion. not just the passion between 2 people, but Laurel and the horses, Sam and his team and being a leader and doing a job you love. and the budding relationship with Sam and Tyson. Hell Tyson makes the book, lol. he's totally adorable.
Book one of the Firefighters of Montana Great start to a new series This was a new to me author Quick entertaining and spicy read Looking forward to reading the next in the series
My Review: The mountains are my happy place so I also have a happy place for smokejumpers. We lived in the mountains for 3 1/2 years and seeing those exhausted, dirty crews always gave my heart a twist. It's a hard life, but the job they do is incredible. So when I heard about this new series coming out with a couple of my favorite authors writing on it, I was bouncing in my seat with excitement.
This is the first book in the series and it's the PERFECT place to start the series. This book is about Sam. He's the new captain taking over the smokejumpers after their other captain died in a bad jump the year before. It's a new job, a new crew, a new home for a guy who's already had a rough year. When the story begins he's just arriving in MT and settling in his dead wife's horse at the ranch where she will be boarded. His wife died just under a year ago. As a soldier and smokejumper who wasn't home enough, he's harboring some deep-seeded guilt...a lot of it tied up in this champion horse that he gave her to make up for his absences.
For Laurel, she was a risk-taker in another lifetime...before her son was born leaving her a single mother. There's no where in her life for risks any longer...Tyson has to take her priorities. Falling for a smokejumper is right up there with her affair with the Olympic snowboarder that got her pregnant....NOT a good idea. But with Laurel taking care and training Sam's horse, it's hard to avoid the enigmatic man or their incredible chemistry.
The setting really makes this book. I loved the backdrop of the smokejumpers and this little Montana town that revolves around them and ranching. This isn't an easy situation that Sam is stepping into. The whole team is still mourning their last captain and having an outsider coming in to step into his shoes isn't comfortable for any of them. I liked how aware of that Sam was and how he really tried to respect and earn his team's respect in turn.
I also really loved Laurel's ranch and the menagerie her son has created. There's a lot of depth there...both in her history between herself and her ex as well as the situation with her parents, especially her mother. This could have very easily turned into a longer, deeper novel, but as is it's a pretty quick read that gave me a happy place to escape to for a few hours.
It's a great start to the series. Now I need to see about going out and buying the rest of them.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
2025 has become a year of firefighters for me as this is the 3rd romance, I have read this year with a Firefighter MMC. Smolder has Sam as he moves to a new small town to become the captain of their smoke jumpers and as he moves his horse to a barn owned by the father of single mother Laurel.
I liked Sam and Laurel quite a bit. They both had interesting backstories, and I liked the way they clicked together. I really liked that Sam wanted to bring out the best in Laurel - he reminded her that she isn't just a mom and that she can be a good mom while still doing things that bring her joy. The highlight of the book was Laurel's son Tyson and his crew of animals; they all had so much character. Learning more about wildfires and smoke jumpers was really interesting, and you could tell that Tracy did research into the job and respected what the real-life men do.
I wished that the book had been longer or more time had passed within it. After reading it, I did join a talk with the author, and she even said that she wished she had been able to make it longer, so I was happy to learn that I was not the only one who thought that.
E-Galley provided by author for review. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinions presented herein are my own except as noted.
This is the first in a series about Montana “Smoke Jumpers.” Future books in the series will release over the next four weeks:
SCORCH by Dani Collins releases 6/14 IGNITE by Nicole Helm releases 6/21 HEAT by Karen Foley releases 6/28 FLAME by Victoria Purman releases 7/5
If they match the heat in Tracy’s book the series may just burn up the internet.
Tracy’s book offers a sort of full circle to the reader: A man whose late wife thought he should stop with the dangerous Army Ranger Smoke Jumping gig but he keeps the profession after she passes away. When he takes up a job replacing a Smoke Jumper leader who died when his chute hit a tree it puts off the woman he is interested in who is training his late wife’s horse to perform in the nationals.
I thought Laurel was driven to create a good life for her son, but that having had him young, missed out on a lot of her youth. Sam’s background, on the other hand makes him focused and serious about whatever he tackles. He doesn’t want a woman who can’t handle his career: been there, done that, it sucked.
What will end up bringing them together, outside the bedroom where they come together quite well, is learning about each other from the ground up. Sam softens and comes to really like her son, dad and disabled mother. He understands why she is aloof for a while and that when she is all in she is all or nothing.
Tracy does an excellent job developing characters even though she has fewer pages than usual and also has to set up an entire series. She ties up all her loose ends very carefully and packs the chutes for the next book in the series.
4.5 Stars!!! Smolder is the first in the Firefighter of Montana Series written by different authors. I love Montana and I love firemen. They are so brave and sexy. This first in series was written by Tracy Solheim. I loved it. It started off with some tension and my curiosity was piqued. Sam and Lauren both had their issues, both of which were realistic. I was rooting for them all the way. Both H/h were written with good personalities, the sexual tension was strong and yet the love scenes were written well. I wanted Sam :). After Sam and Lauren fought their respective demons, they were able to show their love for each other. All though there was interaction from the beginning between the two, and yes, even sex, it took the length of the book for the angst to be worked out. I will say that I did not feel this book was boring or dragged on. I read each page with eager anticipation. I have already pre-ordered the rest of this series which releases, one per week, and am looking forward to the next book which features related characters from Smolder. Highly recommend if you are a fan of anything released by Tule Publishing.
Sam Gaskill is starting over in Glacier Creek, Montana at the new captain of the smoke jumpers squad. He's not looking for entanglements. They only end badly for him. In fact that is the reason he's at the Whispering Breeze Ranching that will house Tabitha, a horse that he had gifted to his late wife, He's here to make sure his wife's dream is fulfilled, Tabitha competing at the national level. Only his attraction to the woman who's going to be training the horse hits him deep in the gut.
Laurel Keenan had dreams of her own, but an unplanned pregnancy threw a spanner in the works. Now she is following a career that is a smart choice but not who she is or what she needs. She's had a bad enough experience with her son's adrenaline junkie father. She cannot give her heart to someone who loves the thrill of danger more than he loves her.
But neither is prepared for the intense heat of their feelings for each other. So now they must decide if they want to fan the flames of love or put it out once and for all.
Smolder by author Tracy Solheim was a spitfire, quick read, full of entertaining characters who grabbed this readers attention. The scorching moments and fiery characters together made for a not to be missed read. The chemistry between Laurel and Sam sizzled and the challenges for both characters throughout the story was some great reading. This book did not disappoint and was a red-hot series starter. Review copy received from Tule Publishing for an honest rating
I absolutely loved this story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Sam and Laurel have a hot romance that captured my heart from page one. Tracy Solheim did a great job describing the life of a firefighter and the beauty of Montana.
