Is love in the signs for a Capricorn ex-Navy SEAL and the Aries out to capture his heart?

Capricorn Slate Claybourne, a former SEAL who has seen and done things in country no man should endure, returns to his bucolic hometown on Pieberry Island, desperate for the everyday routines he once wanted to escape.

Unable to be around people, his body still a lethal weapon when his night terrors wake him from sleep, Slate’s failed to keep the promise he made to the commander who died in his arms: to look after the older man’s baby girl.

But animated Aries Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be when she lands on the island to take over the decrepit Pieberry House, determined to turn it into an inn for summer tourists…and even more determined to yank Slate back into the land of the living.

First she crashes into him at the island’s Winter Festival, dumping a towering stack of pies at his feet, then she drags him off to a fortune teller against his better judgment.

Except for the sizzling attraction smoldering between them, they’re incompatible in every way.

But when a furious December nor’easter traps them together at Pieberry House, will Slate and Holly overcome their pasts and discover they are two halves of a whole?

Suffering from PTSD our Capricorn, former Navy Seal Slate, has more or less settled in at home. Living in a Lighthouse, lobstering and occasionally captaining the ferry he avoids socializing as much as he can. Much preferring the solitude to anyone knowing about his issues. He is also in an offhanded way keeping a promise to his late friend and commander by watching his daughter from afar.

His Commander's daughter Holly tracked him down because a letter from her father is to be opened with him. She fell in love with the island and purchased a dilapidated mansion with hopes of renovating into an Inn. She hadn't approached him but fate has a way of making things happen.

A bouncy determined Aries, Holly is determined to make this man smile and laugh again. The excerpt below is their meeting and one of my favorite scenes in the book.

He on the other hand wants to keep his distance, certain his friend didn't mean seducing his daughter as a way of taking care of her.

This is a fun read with lots of snark, quirky quotes and stubborn denial. It does have some scary points that can hit home for some. Be prepared to laugh and cry. This book will make you do both.

With the brutality of winter weighing on us I'm thrilled to have come across this short story long on charm and entertaining in its banter. Throw in emotional issues for veterans dealt with subtly and thought provokingly and it all culminates in a satisfying read courtesy of likable characters and a nice blend of humor and sensuality.

Small town boy Slate left an outgoing young man full of humor but after witnessing so much bloodshed he's now left with scars both inside and out, returning home lost and wanting to be left alone. A promise to the man he saw as a father though puts him in close quarters with the one woman with the power to bring him out of the darkness as both of them engage in a sensual tug of war that keeps readers enthralled. At story's start Slate just wants to be left alone out of fear over what he could do as he's suffering from PTSD. His symptoms are palpable and painful to see and had me aching for him and the darkness slowly consuming him. The temptation of Holly though gives him a glimpse of the happiness he could have if he just takes a chance and it had me rooting for him every step of the way.

Holly is a breath of fresh air from the very first time readers see her. She's full of energy but had losses of her own that have left her flitting from one place to another. Through her father's letters and photos she's found a connection with Slate and meeting him in person doesn't deter her from wanting more from him. Seeing his dark side, and the painful war he's waging with himself, has her using every weapon in her kindhearted and endearing arsenal to help heal him in a journey that's over too soon. Holly is an outspoken women whose interactions with Slate were teeming with sexual tension as well as humor as his bark never scared her away from what her heart wanted. She was the rock he needed to be brave against a faceless enemy and she stood strong beside him which had me liking her all the more.

This was an endearing and entertaining read over far too soon. I was drawn to the overall theme of the story, along with the book series concept, as well as the emotional issues of PTSD but wish they'd been dealt with more fully. I wish too we'd gotten to know more about Holly and Slate, a deeper look at things from their POV, which would've pulled me further into this story. Along with the likable main couple there was a small but colorful cast of secondary characters that added to the small town ambiance with all its charm and well-meaning gossip. Add in some decadent and fiery sexual interludes and I found myself caught up in this book's sensual haze that gave me an afternoon of smiles and sighs as Holly and Slate raced to their HEA. Readers wanting a bit of afternoon delight will get just that with this short story!

A steamy and incredibly well-written story!First of all, I loved this book. While I wish it was longer and the tension built up a little more between the characters, the actual writing was wonderful! The non-cliche words and phrases Taryn chose made the book flow in a steady rhythm and made it even more enjoyable!I liked reading Holly because she was no-nonsense. She didn't play games, but rather knew what she wanted and went after it.And she wanted Slate.Which was fabulous, because all Slate wanted was to be left alone. This dynamic made for interesting growth of the two as characters, and I liked reading how their feelings evolved in the time they were together.Slate was the definition of "tortured hero," and I absolutely loved him.And don't even get me started on the Happily Ever After scene! I was almost in tears it was so touching! All in all, this was a great book. The idea of the series is intriguing and I'd love to explore it (especially to read the one about my zodiac sign!). I'd definitely be VERY interested in reading more books by Taryn!***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

Holy wicked winds, batman! Slate and Holly have some serious chemistry going on here. She has no filter and he's so beaten down by what he's seen that they're like to opposing forces pushing against one another. Until they reach a point where they both give into their mutual attraction,.

Or until Holly forces Slate to realize that facing your fears with someone at your side makes you even stronger.

I'm a sucker for two people being trapped by inclement weather together. Seriously. It's a thing. That means I adored the idea of these two staring their fears in the face while being unable to escape the intensity they spark in one another.

*thumbs up*

Warrior with PTSD and promises takes on perky and persistent progeny of the OIC that died in his arms. Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be and he isn’t the fun loving prankster her father wrote to her about. But she is determined to bring him back to life. These two will out stubborn each other all the way to the alter. Her Captain is sweet, funny, sad and sexy. There is no way to read this without feeling something. A fantastic addition to this loosely connected series.
