Three People Who Lead Three Very Different Lives Are Looking For Answers. They Are About To Get So Much More.
At 30 years old, Owen is already an independently wealthy entrepreneur with a type A personality. Some would say that he has it all: A big house, plenty of disposable income and the kind of good looks that give him the pick of any woman he desires. And yet for all of his wealth, he lacks anything resembling true love. A long chain of one night stands can only satisfy his physical appetites, but his heart remains desperately unsatisfied.
Derek has the dashing good looks of a movie star, but he's got the self confidence of a depressed loner. While he's got a great job in advertising, he's still living with his parents at 29 and he's finally looking to make a change. Thankfully, his best friend Owen has decided to take him under his wing and coach him through the finer points of living well. When they meet a mysterious woman at a relative's wedding, Owen challenges Derek to put his newfound knowledge to the test.
After a slew of traumatic life experiences, Adelaide is making up for lost time. Although she's happy to engage in casual encounters, the last thing she wants is a committed relationship because that can only end in total misery. When she decides to randomly crash the wedding of an ex-boyfriend, she meets two gorgeous guys who have clearly been friends for a long time. However, it doesn't take long for her to notice a hidden dynamic at play between the two men, something that neither of them seem to be consciously aware of. When one of the men, Owen, asks her out, the proposition is far too compelling to turn down. Where's the the harm in tagging along with these two and seeing what might develop?
What originally started as an innocent bit of fun will turn into so much more as three people, each with their own baggage, must truly come to terms with their own demons in order to see that true love is right in front of them.
This is a standalone MMF Bisexual Romance Novel with an HEA ending and no cliffhangers!
Unconventional relationships are a new topic in romance these days. I have to say that at first, they weren't my thing, but I seem to be warming to the idea. Either that or this book just wasn't that bad.
Now, it did get bogged down in details that were distracting to the story itself. There were some places it dragged and got a bit boring. Many of those parts were skimmed easily to get to the meat of the story. The characters are what kept it alive.
It seems to have been written as a serial at first, and this book is a compilation of all the bits into one novel. The repetition of facts was distracting until I figured out what was actually going on. It would have been nice to know the serial part up front.
Although I don't see myself running out to buy more of these types of romances, I may pick up more of this author's work. I found I really rather liked her overall style, despite her overuse of the word "turgid."
I received this book for an honest review. Derek is 29, he still lives with his parents, plays video games and loves anime, when his girlfriend breaks up with him at his sisters wedding his best friend Owen makes him an offer to help turn his life around. Owen has his life together, he owns his home, has a great job and an endless string of women. The best friends meet Addie at the wedding and have a one night stand. This is a journey of self discovery and growth as they reconnect with Addie and Derek realizes he has sexual feelings for his best friend. Another great read by Nicole Stewart!
Derek is a terrible brother💀imagine dating the woman (she’s the ex of the groom) who crashed his sisters wedding?? Like wtff and then he said „i think my sister took it personal“ of course something like that is freaking personal💀💀💀💀 I liked the book idea. Derek‘s best friend (Owen) helped him to become the best version of himself and they found a love match for both of them on the way (poly relationship) All three characters are nice but the author’s writing style didnt really catch me. I skipped Dereks Worklife out of bordness😭😭 Bi trope was also not mentioned properly, derek said both men are not gay but they like each other and then they kinds just went with this statement. Adelaine was a really sexualized character. They mentioned that shes smart but just talked about her hotness all the time😭😭i liked her background story because she was the only character with a a coherent storyline that explained why she is the person she is now. (Commitment issues because she was a foster child)
“In my experience, hearts can’t be split in two unless they’re broken,” she murmured
For one thing, she's only had bad experiences with love, even if it wasn't romantic love, and opening up to someone was hard for her and then she's supposed to do that for 2 people?
I loved her statement. But it worked out for them:)
Becoming Derek is another great MMF menage book by Nicole Stewart and it is so hot, very sexy with a really good story line that kept me engaged all the way through. Derek, Addie and Owen are all very likeable characters and I liked that the story was told from Derek's POV. I feel this book may have been a series originally as it has four parts to it and at the beginning of some of the parts it reiterates the end of the previous part which is okay to refresh your memory when part of a series not so much though when put together and you just read the same bit the page before. However I did enjoy it very much and look forward to reading the follow on book Embracing Derek.
I was instantly sold on this book when I saw that it was an mmf romance. I sort of love those. They give me a big fat lady boner. So this was a no brainer. Derek is struggling to find his way. Living at home with his parents, skating by (barely) at his job and all around being a sort of loser. He’s not put together like his best friend, Owen. But that is about to change when Owen takes him under his wings and when they meet Adelaide and ultimately end up tangled in the sheets.
So this isn’t your typical MMF read. There was a bit more story to this one, sort of taking it out of the purely erotica genre. Adelaide was a sort of messed up girl who, as I discovered, I struggled to get to know. She remained a mystery through most of this book. And although there was some attraction between all of the characters, this was simply a love story that only fit when there were three of them involved.
As I stated above, this wasn’t just erotica, and I did enjoy that aspect. I enjoyed the story – I do wish it was a bit sexier, but sometimes you can’t get both aspects. Though at times it steamed up my kindle, it wasn’t an off the charts hot read, But the story was still solid.
I enjoyed this MMF story. My one complaint is the reader never gets inside Owen’s head to understand his desires and motivations. The story is told from Derek’s point of view. We get details regarding Derek and Adelaide’s backstory; but I would have liked more details regarding Owen’s backstory. Of the three characters, Owen is not as three dimensional as Derek and Adelaide. This book ends with a HEA that is more of a HFN ending. I think the reason for the way the story ended is because there is a part two...Embracing Derek. I look forward to reading Embracing Derek to see how these three work everything out in this steamy MMF.
This is an entertaining hot read about a young man who is having a difficult time knowing himself. He is best friends with a together guy and they meet a young woman who has interested both men. Each of them must come to conclusions about themselves and each other. Enjoy I did.
This is the first book I have read by Nicole Stewart. I'm not sure the description does the story justice but the title is certainly a fair indicator of the journey.
Derek is 29 and still lives in his parent's basement. He is going to lose his job. His girlfriend breaks up with him. He's in a bad, bad place. His best friend, Owen, offers to be his life coach. Together they help Derek become who he was always meant to be. His journey is long! At the beginning of the story I did't feel sorry for Derek. I thought it was pretty clear that he was using every excuse possible to not grow up. As the story progressed I realized that all of the bad things happening to him had to happen so he could see the error of his ways. Owen has a journey of his own because he realizes he is attracted to Derek and Adelaide. Adelaide needs to learn to trust loving someone.
One of the things that drove me crazy about this book were the instances of repetition. I hate it when an author feels like the reader needs to have story elements summarized from time to time so the reader doesn't forget them. If they don't help forward the story, they are useless and annoying. Derek had a LOT of growing up to do and I felt like he embraced and maintained the changes instantly and that bugged me a bit. I wanted the story to take place over a longer time frame so he would have the chance to backslide and learn from his mistakes. Also, at the beginning of the story Derek is told a lot of terrible stuff about Adelaide but he chooses to pursue her anyway. Eventually, Adelaide tells him her version of the story and Derek believes her version of the story totally without really questioning it. In life there is always a bit of gray space but this part of the story was handled as black and white. Finally, I didn't love the end but it makes a lot more sense than what I had in mind so I'm not counting that against the book.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. As in life, you don't get all of the answers and people don't have snappy comebacks for every situation. In fact, there was a great moment when Derek's father tells Derek he always thought Derek and Owen were a couple and Derek really has no response. Yeah, that's about how real life works. In the end I enjoyed the story and I liked the characters.
I would recommend this book to anyone who reads MMF stories with contemporary settings. If a reader is not comfortable with alternative lifestyles, I would not recommend this story.
Quotes:
She marginally lowered her tone. "You think like is a joke. Nobody's laughing with you. They were laughing at you, but the punch line is getting older, and it's not funny anymore. You're the punch line, Derek. It's sad because you have so much potential! You happen to have a great job, to have a lot going for you! You just don't apply yourself." loc 86
"I'm trying to give you the opportunity to bad mouth the hell out of yourself one good time, so I don't have to keep hearing this crap. Have at it," said Owen. His full lips curled upwards in a grin, but it was hard to spot through his facial hair. His dark eyes twinkled teasingly behind his glasses. loc 332
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the story of Derek transforming his looser life into a success story of which his menage relationship with Adelaide, an attachment phobic woman and his best friend Owen are only part of the tale. The story mostly worked for me, as I enjoyed seeing Derek defying expectations and succeeding both in work and love. The relationship development was sufficient, although none of the three really wanted to discuss anything so the whole thing ended up being rather vague and bereft of any emotionally intensity. The sex scenes are somewhat varied, with roughly half of them occurring only in Derek's dreams.
The writing is schizophrenic, so much so that it is hard to believe that this was actually written by a single person. The first third of the book uses a lot of British slang and the rhythm of the dialogue is decidedly British. American expressions are used occasionally, but they are either dated, or not right for the characters or situation. The rest of the book seems to have been scrubbed of the British word choices, although they occasionally pop in and at one point a character actually states they are in America. The dialogue is at times fine and at other times really awkward. The beginning of the book over uses adjectives and adverbs, often incorrectly with unintended humorous results, sounding like it was written by someone who didn't speak English as a first language for example: "Derek wheezes with arousal as silky saliva dribbles down . . .). Most of the sex scenes are full of purple prose and strange word choices. Oddly the last third of the book is very well written. There is also a strange tendency to repeatedly summarize events that have just occurred making me wonder if this might have originally been serialized.
The book seemed to end just as the threesome were finely starting to admit that they were in a relationship and things were starting to get interesting between them. The ending was OK, but I personally won't classify as entirely happy.
Book review by: Kristy Dean Title: Becoming Derek Author: Nicole Stewart (Arc for an honest review)
Authors writing style: I fell in love with Nicole’s work about a year ago. Most of her stories will give you an eye opening experience as the characters explore a new lifestyle. I have reread several of her books. The stories are detailed and take you through a lot of emotions. Don’t be surprised if you see things in a new light too. Overview: Derek is struggling through life. He has not found his grove. He loves where he works, but things are still not up to par. First he gets dumped by his girlfriend at his sister’s wedding, then he is about to lose his job, and his parents are kicking him out of their basement. That was until he decided that his best friend could be the key to a new Derek. Derek asks Owen to help him be a better version. Owen decides to help him and coach him on how to better himself. First part is a one night stand with a beautiful woman named Addie. The two start off laughing and drinking with leads them to a one night stand between the three of them. You would think that was enough until Derek 2.0 decides to add more, and Owen tries to help as best as possible. But Derek decides he wants to see Addie again but Owen tries to tell him that it might now work out. Derek is also dealing with his job as he is trying to find a balance between work and personal. This story has a few great twists and turns along the way as Derek, Owen, and Addie grow and explore.
Nicole Stewart doesn't let you down with this one, she keeps you in suspense with one of the characters Addie, although Derek is struggling with his life in more ways than one, he finds himself on the end of things with discovering that he has a desire to be with Owen his best friend more than a friend. After his sisters wedding and he ends up with Addie and Owen his desires seem to take over. Owen is trying to get Derek to become more outward I guess the word would be, he is changing the way he lives, dresses and attitude. You see Derek is living at home, same job for 5 years no raises or promotions, doesn't get excited about much but video games and anime. Owen is self assured, dresses well, has attitude to spare and tries to change Derek to be more like him.
After the party is where the story takes you on the journey as he (Derek) finds himself. You find out more of the other characters with Addie towards the end how her life ended up like it did. You also find out what makes Owen tick (I think)....
MMF romances are becoming more and more popular and Nicole Stewart is setting the bar pretty damn high for other authors coming into this genre. I good quick read to me and I think if you like this genre you will enjoy it. I must say though I did like her Phoenix series better and is she is new to you as an author try that series first in my opinion.
Title: Becoming Derek Author:Nicole Stewart Genre:MMF Bisexual Romance
Becoming Derek from Nicole Stewart was a great 5 star read.
Derek and his best friend Owen have two completely different lives. Derek is still living at home and is not hugely experienced in sexual encounters and suffers from low self esteem. Owen seems to have it all, great job, great car his own home.
After Derek's girlfriend breaks up with him at his sister's wedding, he finds himself going to Owens with Addie for a very hot encounter. "Very steamy"
Owen agrees to be Derek's life coach to help him improve his life. In the mean time Derek can't get Addie out of his mind and wants to see her again. What will happen when they find Addie again? How will Derek deal with his developing feelings for Owen?
This story is great and I loved taking the journey with Derek, Owen, and Addie. It was really captivating watching them grow and help each other work through their issues. I have to say that this is one of my favorites from Nicole so far and I hope that we will get to see some more from these three. Thank you Nicole Stewart for another great 5 star read.

To paraphrase Robert Frost: "Committed to one, he wanted both". That's where Derek's story begins, and it is a story filled with hot scenes (of course!), growing pains, and in its own way, damn good life advice. In one corner of Derek's life is Owen, his best friend and secret crush for forever and a day. In the other corner is the newcomer Adelaide, bursting with sexuality and unashamed of it. Derek wants both of them, but more, he wants to be worthy of them. He doesn't think that's possible because he has yet to see his own worth. Thanks to his friend (and a much needed boot to the ass at his job), his desire to grow up finally exceeds his fear and the story takes off from there! I enjoyed this story immensely. Sensual exploration without judgment is challenging, and Derek's journey is one that kept my interest and rooting for him to finally accept who he is and believe he deserves what he wants. I'll definitely be reading the author's next work, and I hope she keeps the great writing coming!
Loved!! I am never disappointed with a book by Nicole Stewart and this one is now at the top of my list! I immediately loved all three characters; Derek, Owen and Adelaide. Derek starts his journey, coasting along, not trying and he gets a wake up call that things just need to change. I like how he was willing to listen to Owen and embrace that he needed to snap out of it and work to move forward. Meeting Addie brought these two best friends together in a completely different way. Their story is so hot, so full of caring emotions that builds and builds while tip toeing around secret desires. I love how they grow together, the deep connections and the amazing heat they have! Getting a glimpse of the future was perfect! This is a must read!

I'll admit I didn't know what MMF stood for initially when I read this book but I quickly figured it out. This book is not your traditional love story as it involves an intimate relationship between 2 male best friends and a female. If you are open to nontraditional romance novels you will enjoy this book. I found it very intriguing and quite sexy. I think many people will relate to this book as it covers many adult topics such as love, career, growth, abandonment issues, betrayal and much more.
I'm looking forward to exploring more MMF novels as well as other books that Nicole Stewart has written.
I received this book for an honest review. All you MMF fans are going to love this one! Derek and Owen are best friends but opposites. Derek seems to be the loner as where Owen tends to get whatever he wants without trying. At Derek's sister's wedding, he is dumped by his girlfriend. As he's at the bar, Owen walks in. Owen plans on lifting up Derek's spirits and expand his horizons as he engages a conversation with a stranger in the bar. These 3 are right for each other although they all have issues to work through. Great read!!
This story is about the lives and relationship between three people with the primary focus on Derek. I can honestly say that I never knew what was going to happen next. Derek, Owen and Addie all have some pretty big faults but the story unfolds in a way where they grow and you fall in love with them faults and all. It took me most of the story to warm up to Addie but I got there. I like how there were secondary stories that intertwined and were resolved within this one book. It was an enjoyable read.
First off I have to say that I enjoyed this book. BUT, I had a hard time getting into it. The first fourth of this book was too much about clothes and setting Derek on the right path and teaching him stuff. The author could have done that in not so many many words. Now, after I got past that, I enjoyed it. It's a ménage story about 2 guys and a girl. That part was well written. It just kind of bogged down at the first of the book. Would I recommend this book to a friend? Yes but with the explanation that it really doesn't get good til you are about 25% into it.
I really enjoyed this menage. It was a little bit of a slow start for me, but I really liked who Derek became as a person. I loved his friendship with Owen that turned into something so much more. Adelaide completed Owen and Derek. Although sometimes I did feel like it was more Addie/Derek and Owen was kind of a third wheel. But I think they developed something real that worked for them. The sex was hot and the story was good. Love a good menage.
Gifted an ARC for an honest review.... Who would have thought the immature, kind of a loser type would turn out to be the mature one by the end!!??! I love the dynamics between characters in this book. It was well paced, had compelling characters, just a fun, sexy read. I still love The Ink For Three series the best and look forward to more of them. Nicole is my one of my favorite authors and does not disappoint with this book.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book is an awesome read. I'd recommend it to anyone. It hooked me from page one.. I absolutely loved following Derek on his journey of self discovery to becoming the man he wanted to be. And to watch as his best friend helped him along the way was truly great. But best of all was the way Adelaide helped them come together and become a family.. The three of them make great team. Thanks for another great read, Nicole Stewart.
Yes, I loved this one. Regular people falling in love. I loved everything about Derek, I don't think he gave himself enough credit before Owen jumped in to #reshapeDerek. His turn around was to sharp and swift. He had it in him all along, just needed that little bit of confidence boost. Addie is a spit fire and I wish to see more of her spunk like at the amusement park. Owen, I want more Owen. I want to get to know him better. I have a feeling he has loved Derek for a LONG time.
Very good story of unconventional love in a modern world. I'm all for 'what goes on behind closed doors is no-one else's business' and that is exactly how these three play it. I have read several menage/polyamory based books. Some have been very good, some not so good. This one dealt with the range of emotions, the 'what if's' and the practicalities of being in this type of relationship.
Nicole Stewart does it again! Great story filled with new discovery and drama about life and self, that wouldn't let me put it down. Sucked me right into the lives of those involved and kept me guessing.
I made through this book hoorah. Parts were enjoyable others got boring long and drawn out. Basically it was about Derek, his best friend Owen and Addy a young woman with commitment issues find there way into and around a relationship.
2.5 stars The story itself had promise, but the Epilogue was so confusing, it didn't make sense. The wording use for body parts and sex seemed to have come from one of those old romance novels, way over the top.
3.5 Stars from me. I wasn't a fan of Addie and did not connect with her at all. For some reason I didn't trust her. I also didn't get the connection between her and Owen. I loved Owen and Derek and wanted more of the two of them. Great seeing Derek improve his life.
I enjoyed this book so much. It is well written with great chemistry between these characters. I really liked how they become this thing, but don't want to put a name on it. Which in this day and age is what really is going on...
Loved the plot of this story. Was very interesting when Derek and Owen finally hooked up together after being friends for so long. Would recommend this book.
