In 2031, an unprecedented event known as the Great Catastrophe ushered in a new era of scientific discovery, revealing the truth about life and death—at the cost of 7.4 billion lives. Those who remained found themselves endowed with special abilities, ones that enabled perception above and beyond the physical world, leading to the discovery that death is an eternity trapped between universes. Sometimes, the truth is better left unsaid.

It is now 2095. Raile Alton is the government’s top scientist, and his talents are as prolific as his rage. He’s developing technology to destroy the dead, who, trapped in limbo, wield power over the living on Earth. As the living work to evade death with a genetically flawless replacement for their physical bodies, the dead have teamed up with an army of living sympathizers plotting revolution. When a mysterious entity crashes a government raid, Raile stumbles upon the only survivor, Eethena Twenton, an alluring scientist turned revolutionary. He forces her to join him, but soon she has Raile questioning everything he’s ever known.

And Raile’s not the only one realizing that nothing is as it seems. The revolutionaries have been infiltrated. A top government official has a dark agenda. Even the dead can be suborned. What starts as Raile’s quest to destroy the dead becomes a journey of discovery: devastating loss and a heinous truth. But will Raile achieve victory against the dead, or will the truth erode the frail foundation of belief that he’s built his life upon. And as the lines of battle shift, will he find solace, or simply shift the crosshairs of his rage?

I loved this book! The characters have depth, the plot is suspenseful with twists, and the way the author describes environments and situations you feel like you are there.

Raile is the main character of the story and he's kind of a dick. He works for the government developing the technology to destroy the dead. The government has also found a way to keep the living from dying. The resistance, which is lead by Erna and her son Donny are trying to stop the government from developing these technologies. The lies the government is peddling to the public about death needs to be stopped. If anyone can stop them it's Erna. I would not want her as my enemy, but damn she is funny! The plot takes you through discovery (both scientific and personal), betrayal, and new found alliances. This book kept me engaged from start to finish. I highly recommend it.

I received this book for free as part of the goodreads first reads giveaway. I'll admit, this book took me a while to get into, the main character is a jerk, and there were a few words I kept getting confused with others, fortunately there is a glossary in the back. I'm glad I stuck it out though, this is a great story, the characters are very well written and the pace is perfect. I would recommend this book to fans of scifi and postapocalyptic books.
