Guillermo Thorndike lo escribió tras oir a actores y testigos presenciales de los sucesos, tras recorrer los lugares donde se produjeron, inspeccionar archivos, agotar documentos, cotejar versiones disímiles y múltiples. Riguroso y veraz, no es este, empero, un texto de historia; es un relato vivo, una reconstrucción animada de personajes, ambientes y sucesos, tan cálida y subyugante que no fuese ficción sino realidad.

La primera edición de este libro fue lujosa y carísima. Esta segunda es, por eso, la primera que lo pone al alcance de todo lector. Para una mejor apreciación de los hechos que Thorndike se refiere, este volumen recoge, en un apéndice, el testimonio que dejó, poco antes de morir, Luis A. Flores, Ministro de Gobierno en 1932; es decir, en el año de la barbarie.

Guillermo Thorndike Losada was a Peruvian journalist and writer, who helped to found several important newspapers within Peru. Thorndike helped to found La República, one of the country's main national dailies, and was the founder of Cronicawan, the first nationally circulated Quechua language newspaper in Peru's history. He has been called one of the most important Peruvian journalists of the past 40 years.

A classic novel from the same period covered by my second historical novel, "Blessed Assassination."
It was written some 35 years after the dramatic historical events that marked Peruvian politics and society for decades. Thorndike was a masterful historical novelist and journalist.
The edition available at retailers like Amazon probably includes the transcript of a television interview with a key protagonist of the period: Luis A. Flores - a key character also in my historical novel "The Titans of the Pacific."
