Anna and her Naval Intelligence Agency, NIA, teammates have a new high-priority assignment: foreign raiders who are wreaking havoc within the United Alliance of Stars. They hit high value targets, have access to inside information, kill the security guards, and leave no witnesses. The NIA team soon discovers the raiders' system has been well thought out and has no weak links. The raiders prove arrogant, resourceful, and in no hurry to leave. So when the raiders discover the NIA team assigned to catch them broke the smuggler's organization, their solution's simple—kill them. With a Wanted-Dead-Only reward on their heads, the team finds nowhere is safe, even on a war cruiser, and realize the longer it takes to unravel the raiders’ complex system of communications, the more the odds favor the raiders succeeding. But the team has an ally who might just make the difference—a red angel.
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and joined the military right out of high school. I served twenty-two years in the United States Air Force as a certified internal auditor. While in the military service, I lived in seven states and two foreign countries, and obtained two degrees: a BS in mathematics and an MS in computer science.
After I retired from the Air Force, I secured a position with Digital Equipment Corporation, located in Bedford, Massachusetts, as a software course developer and instructor. I worked twenty-two years at DEC and held positions as a course developer, course development manager, software engineer, and software engineering manager.
Today, I’m retired and live in Tucson, Arizona, with my wife of fifty-three years. My daughter and two grandchildren live in Maryland. I began writing several years after I retired, when I was seventy. My first two attempts remain in my desk drawer—good ideas, but poorly written. Subsequently, I co-authored, with Jeanne Tomlin, three fantasy novels: Talon of the Raptor Clan, Scales of Justice, and All My Friends Have Wings (young adults). Talon of the Raptor Clan was sold to ePress-online Books and came out in July 2009. Since then I have written two additional novels: The Laughing Hounds (urban fantasy) and The Riss Gamble (science fiction).
My hobbies for the past forty years have been kung fu and tai chi.
Red was venomous this time!! *super happy* (Stop looking at me like that...he was "poisonous" throughout the first book, not venomous. It's a thing for me, 'kay.)
Anna progresses in her career as an interplanetary investigator, still hampered by her youth, but aware that her life will probably be shortened by her medical dependence on snake venom. Good to have a character take lessons and practice a lot before doing well in combat situations. The author chose not to have race and sexism issues in this universe, so cheerful, morally simple mystery solving and career building- very enjoyable easy reading.
A few thinks make me wonder if we're rooting for the wrong teem. Threatening suspects with family imprisonment is something you see in China or North Korea. "Your rights don't matter as much as..." is very dystopian.
It really makes me cringe when a character who uses the firing range, with instruction, weekly calling it a "Clip".
Anna and the Red God are a good team. Her relentlessness and his foresight makes their accomplishments seem almost magical. The espionage elements seem real and believable - can’t wait until the next book.
Nail-biting story, good action sequences and the storyline just seems to flow and read l0almost like a Sherlock Holmes story. I look forward to seeing what adventures lies in store next.
This is a fast paced action series with a great MC in the traditional C.R Daems style. I have now finished book 5 so will give a full review on book 5.
As with the previous book in this series, the intelligence part was interesting, if somewhat naive. But the many reiterations felt like the author had to achieve a certain word count.
I really like this author, I haven’t read a single book that I haven’t enjoyed and this book is no exception. The heroine has that blend of frailty and strength that I really like and she definitely has something that makes her different from your typical heroine. Also I like a story that keeps you interested, where you are never sure what might happen next. Will things go to plan or will something go awry. I have read several books recently where every new chapter is another disaster for the hero/heroine and after a while this becomes tedious and depressing to read. I like my heroines to, at least occasionally, be on top. My only minor criticism is that I felt there were loose endings that needed to be tidied up before the story finished, but I hope this means there is another book in the series.
The characters are not developing much but maybe that isn't so bad. A person with the main character's background might be the type who has trouble changing, so the lack of massive change may just underscore the character's traits...
The way naval intelligence is describes seems to be a bit simple minded. The constant explanations of the puzzles and clues, reminds me of Japanese writing. That is neither a compliment nor a criticism, merely an observation.
If you liked the first book, you will like this book.
