Rate this book
Girls are t-terrifying... Sakamachi Kinjiro is a "normal" seventeen-year-old boy who happens to suffer from an abnormal fear of women, otherwise known as gynophobia. His phobia, which surfaces as an occasional nosebleed, has been kept more or less under control...until now. A fateful visit to the school bathroom turns Kinjiro's world upside down, as he discovers the dashing and popular Konoe Subaru is actually a girl?! What's worse, the principal's cruel and domineering daughter, Suzutsuki Kanade, has every reason to keep this secret from leaking out, and makes it her life's work to torment Kinjiro, while attempting to cure his gynophobia. Is Kanade simply sadistic or does she really want to help Kinjiro overcome his fears? It makes no difference to poor Kinjiro, because his life has just become a living hell.

The library did not havee V1 and V5 of this series in, as both were checked-out, so I'm reading those 2 volumes as scanslations. I will be reading the others as the Seven Seas releases.
--------------
I don't know why I kept passing this series up, except that V1 was always checked out at the library. Anyways, this series hops all over the place, and is fun to read. We have a girl who is disguised as a male butler. And, her secret gets found out by this unpopular guy. So, her master, who is the most popular girl in school decides to punish them both.

Then, we find out he's scared of being touched by girls, because his mother and sister are always beating on him. So, the popular girl decides to give him help curing this problem. That leads to fake dates, and to his sister falling for the butler girl. All sorts of weird things start happening after that.

Okay... I should have known that this wouldn't be my cup of tea because of the cover that shows a girl in some kind of state of undress. But I read it anyway. So it's kind of my fault that I read a manga with not very interesting characters and weird fanservice.

I got some volumes of this series in my big book haul on Saturday, but I didn't have this one, so I had to search for it.

And boy, I am so glad I got most of this series, because it is just hilarious. I love most of the characters (I just have one that I don't like, I will tell you soon who that is).

Say hello to Konoe Subaru, a butler, a boy, and also someone who has a big secret, and will do everything he can to protect that. Now, see if you can find out what is wrong in this sentence.

No? Well then, Subaru.... he isn't a he. He is a she. She is pretending to be male. That is her secret, and that is something we find out quickly in this manga when our MC goes to the bathroom and spots Subaru there (she forgot to lock her door), luckily she is fast, but he has already seen her underpants (definitely female). A struggle ensues, as Subaru is quite, um, well, determined not to let the secret come out. Only in turn she makes it worse for herself. Not only because he felt her boobs when she bounced against him, but also because he got a nosebleed. And he only gets those with.... yes, girls.

And thus the story is set. Jirou has to keep a secret, a secret that NO ONE can know. Not ever. Well ok, at least during High School. You will have to read on why Subaru has to keep this a secret, why she has to crossdress.

Along with Subaru we have her mistress, Kana-chan who looks like the typical cute princess-type, but actually has quite an evil personality underneath and will scheme and plot. Jirou quickly finds out that this girl is best to keep befriended. :P And even then he might fear her.

We also find out why Jirou has a phobia for girls, and boy, I just felt so sorry for the guy. :( Getting beaten up daily, who the hell does that? Why would anyone do that? That is just abuse, no other word for it, and I hated the mother and the sister for doing that to Jirou.

Yes, we come to the character I hate. We don't see much of the mom, but we do see a lot of the sister, and from the get-go I hated her. And I am not really hating her less, because with each page, with each violent tendency I just want to tell her to stop, to let her brother to be normal and at peace. Not only does she do violence, but she is also telling lies to people about her brother. And lies that could make him end up in jail if anyone would believe them. :|

Now back to more fun parts. The whole school believes Subaru is male, so what do you get when Subaru and Jirou do more and more together? Yep, people thinking they are dating. And thus we have 2 sides. On the one hand you have the fanclub that hates that Jirou is taking Subaru-sama away, but on the other side you have the BL-loving fanclub who is totally fine with Jirou x Subaru-sama, especially as they can see that Subaru-sama is getting happier and showing a few more smiles than before.

And even if Subaru dresses as a girl.... no one believes her, as they just think she is crossdressing. :P This ought to be fun when she is finally done with school.

There are a lot of hilarious situations, often based on misunderstandings, but more often just normal situations were stuff goes the wrong way.

There is a bit of ecchi in the story, but not that much.

What more? Mm, I love the art in this manga, it is so much fun. Though I wish the artist had drawn Subaru, especially in the beginning, a bit more androgynous. Even without reading the blurb (or knowing the anime) it was clear to me that Subaru was a girl.

I also can't wait to see how it will continue, Subaru still has at least a year to go (plus the months of the second year), and she is growing fast. I do wonder how long she can hide her breasts without binding them too tight.

Plus I also love the backstories each character has.

Well, I can't wait to meet more characters, and also to see if Jirou gets over his phobia. Plus I am so rooting for Subaru x Jirou. Kiss! Hug! Go go!

Mayo Chiki is a manga that's as appealing as any fanservice senin manga starring a bland self-insert protagonist surrounded by moe-style girls. And I hate it.

Okay, those are strong words to pin on a story this mediocre. My hate isn't towards Mayo Chiki--not entirely. What I despise in stories like this is how the various love interests are sexualized without themselves having sexual agency and the main character is milquetoast.

When I say no agency, I mostly mean Subaru, the main girl who is passing as a boy throughout high school in order to be a butler. The half-naked girl on the cover of this book.

Ech.

I guess this wouldn't be as much of a problem if she wasn't
y'know
as squishy-looking as the other girls in this high school.

I can get behind a story where one of the love interests is a masculine looking woman. But no, this one's as soft as a marshmallow with none of its appeal. You can compare how the boys and girls are designed in this story and know immediately what's up. Subaru stands out because she has that baby-face that so many other girls in the story have, and I'm here wondering how no one suspects a thing. I guess the writer either wants me to--

a) Play dumb and wait for the reveal even though I know what it is just by looking at this kid. Because, c'mon. Look at that cover.

b) Accept that our generic protagonist is so dumb he doesn't suspect the guy who wears his hair in a ponytail is a girl (assuming hair length in school is as conservative in Japan as it is in my neck of the woods).

OR

c) Don't question it and put stock in the suspension of disbelief.

I'm not gonna do any of these and instead propose--
d) Demand more from the media I consume before I succumb to the monotony of this genre.

And I know I'm too old for this story when I see these girls in compromising positions and can't help but feel uncomfortable?

Like, after our main guy discovers Subaru's secret (by groping her while she's down on the ground, what a gentleman), the next time we see her is tied up in chains with a ball gag. Because her mistress, another high school girl, wanted to do that. I guess.

It's not my kind of fanservice. I don't think it ever will be. And the reason I'm pouncing on this series in particular in lieu of bigger offenders is because this is the series that's sitting at my work.
I have to look at this when I shelf read. I fixed this volume when the pages were falling out. It's my job to take care of damaged books, but I don't have to enjoy the content.

Of course, there's an audience for this kind of entertainment. There's something for every taste. But it's definitely not mine.

On the surface, this is another story that would not have happened if Japanese bathrooms had locks on their stalls. It's something that makes me wonder. Is it that they don't have locks, or do they trust that they will finish their business before someone else has to use it? As I have stated in numerous other reviews, I am an American Citizen and never went to another country. Is it something cultural?

Oh wait, they mention that they must have forgotten to lock the stall door. Well, that answers that question. It still comes across as a tired trope, however. I don't know how old this story is, though.

In any case, this is the story of a person with gynophobia. Our protagonist is a "healthy" seventeen-year-old boy. Sakamachi Kinjiro ate some expired food, got a stomachache, runs to the bathroom, and walks in on a popular "guy." The "guy" is a girl crossdressing due to some family tradition. As a butler to the Principal's Daughter, Konoe Subaru is not letting this secret slip.

The comedy arises from a girl-dressed-as-a-guy mistaken identity. Furthermore, the Principal's Daughter, Suzutsuki Kanade, is a terrible sadist.

The art is cute, and the story is entertaining. All in all, the first volume is well done.

Death by cuteness and comedy.

Having enjoyed the anime series: I wasn't sure what I would think of the manga adaption. The cover art suggested, and accurately so, that Konoe Subaru is rendered even more feminine / adorably, which kinda makes it harder to follow the plot line IMHO. But suspension of disbelief is a thing I guess.

That said however I freaking love the art work. I love how it can be deathly serious and painfully cute at the same time. Kanade's expressions are down right a delicious and Subaru will likely murder you with the cute. Mayo Chiki delivers well as a manga.

Volume I, for those also familiar with the anime, basically runs until the pool arc, which is my favorite in the anime. It's peppered with enough little extra bits and wonderful artwork to be well worth it. I foresee the rest of the manga likely to be in my future.

My first sight of Mayo Chiki was the animals which I really enjoyed, but as of most animals like that they finish with no ending, so if you want to see how the series ends the manga/light novel is the only option.

I read the manga online a few years back but recently I saw the entire manga and had to buy it cause I enjoyed it so much. I can remember little moments so this is a big refresh.

Each character in this series is so interesting, I love to see the slowly developing relationship between all them, the illustrations are really great too and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

I wasn't impressed for the first half. There you had your stereotypical protagonist who was afraid of girls. (The reason do was funny). It just looked like your average ecchi manga. I decided to continue anyway.

Luckily, after the first half it got beter. They foccused more on the story, characters and funny gags.

I am going to give Mayo Chiki! 2 a shot.

I purchased this on impulse probably over a year ago but have been reading other things. I should have read this sooner as it is super cute (but I do believe there is a right time to read a book). I love these characters!

How many harem manga begin with a protagonist who is morbidly afraid of girls and a few pages in is being smothered by them? Well, here's another that is not especially well done.

I think it's cute and silly. It's very much a shounen romance but I liked. It's not anything revolutionary but it's fun and sometimes you need that

If I had to say anything about this series, it's that I went into this knowing that there would be a high chance I wouldn't overly care for this manga. A few months ago I'd had the chance to see the first few episodes of the anime and wasn't impressed. So why did I pick up this volume? In a nutshell, it's the wonderfully drawn artwork. (And because I thought it'd be a fun series to pass on to my eldest nephew.)

If there's anything I'm a sucker for, it's cute moe manga girls and funny male characters with tons of expressions. This manga has them in abundance, but then that's one of the driving forces of series like these. As far as artwork goes, this volume doesn't disappoint. Sure there's fanservice, but the cover is pretty much as an accurate warning of what to expect here. It's relatively harmless, but if you're overly bothered by this sort of thing then you'd probably be better off with another series.

The story is where my love fest ends. The story is just OK. It's pretty much your standard "boy meets girl, chaos ensues" type of tale, but with butlers. It's not an awful story and Asano does make a good framework for the cutesy scenes, but there is the rub: the story is there to show cute girls in compromising positions. I'm not into this type of fanservice and while it didn't cause me to shake my fist or put the manga down, my lack of interest in cute girl fanservice was a big handicap here. If I were more into that sort of thing then I think that I'd have loved this. I can certainly see where others would.

I just really wish that the story wasn't so bland. If the writer had spent just that extra bit of time to have the story do more than shuffle the characters into your typical cutesy scenarios, I'd probably have liked it more. Even so, the artwork is cute enough that I was willing to overlook this for the most part. I debated giving this four stars because for many, this will be a four or five star read and after all, I was aware that I might not like the volume. It's just not my cup of tea, so I went with three stars.

In the end I can't hate this story for being what it is. I'll probably collect the future volumes for my nephew, but otherwise I'll skip on the rest of the volumes. I recommend this for people who love their fanservice to be well drawn, but if you want a grade A story to go with it then you'll probably want to read this at the bookstore or library first.

Beautiful art. Story wise it's an average high school scenario with over the top characters that cause ridiculous situations for the normal male to endure. I was surprised how quickly Subaru opened up to Jirou ignoring all of the physical beat downs. The series is a little Ecchi for my tastes but considering the "plot twist" (revealed in the first volume) is that Jirou is actually a girl I expected minor revealing scenes.

I give it one star because it was great art.
I'm not digging the story yet. Everyone has a phobia and they are just falling over one another to push them into one another's faces. I've ordered Vol 2 after that I'm not sure if I'll want to keep going with the series.

Super Cute! Story was good, it got better plot wise later on. And the relationship between Konoe Subaru & Sakamachi Kinjiro was adorable~♡ The ending was almost perfect for me. It made me laugh inside quite a bit. lol.
