The Earl's Betrothal

Rate this book
Out of the war and into another, Captain Lord Anthony Hargreaves finds the politics of romance to be as uninviting a battle as the one that nearly cost him his life in Badajoz, Spain.

Wounded both mentally and physically from the Peninsular War in 1812, Anthony returns home to find that his older brother has died, placing Anthony next in line to inherit the estate. But he’s not ready for such responsibilities. And when Anthony’s dying father pleads with him to marry and produce an heir to preserve the family title, it nearly sends Anthony over the edge; nevertheless he dutifully faces a long line of hopeful young ladies who await him. No one grabs his attention, though, like Amelia Clarke, his mother’s stunning companion, who is off-limits for the earl. But when Anthony unwittingly puts Amelia in a compromising situation, he dedicates himself to protecting her reputation.

But the horrors Anthony faced while away from home have left him feeling broken and tormented. And Anthony finds himself drawn to Miss Clarke, the only one who can chase away his demons, but he must overcome the hostility of a society driven by class, a jealous duke bent on revenge, and himself—for could Amelia ever really love a haunted man?

I've enjoyed the contemporary books Ms. Tuft writes and was curious when I saw she was dipping her toes in the Regency genre. I think she's really found her niche, I really loved this book!

I liked Amelia, she's positive, kind and is able to stick up for herself. After loosing her parents she has to become a paid companion. She quickly becomes one of the family, as much as her station would allow anyway. Lord Anthony is presumed dead, but surprises everyone when he shows up alive and well. Sparks fly right from the start with Anthony and Amelia, but their different stations in life mean nothing can come from the chemistry the feel for each other. Lord Anthony felt like the perfect Regency gentleman to me, same with his friends. He's the type Hero I like reading about and rooting for. Acts with honor, is charming, a bit broody and treats his lady love with respect. It was fun watching these two come together, they really balance each other out well.

This was a delightful regency, it deals with some serious issues like Anthony's PTSD, but never gets too heavy. I loved that parts take place out in the country and the rest in London. It really has a very traditional regency feel to it, which I loved. I liked Anthony and Amelia quite a bit, enjoyed the scenes when they're together and trying to figure out how these two could get their happily ever after. I enjoyed the supporting characters (hope some of Anthony's friends will get their own books), the settings were fun and was well written.

I feel satisfied when reading stories where the characters have misunderstandings, assumptions gone awry, compromising romantic situations, and love that's not recognized. It's kind of weird because there's no way I'd want to actually have one of those situations happen to me, but I love reading about them. I can't help but to have a smile on my face.

Anthony was thought to be dead in the war, but is only a physical and emotional wreck. Since his older brother, the heir, died while he was gone, he's now got a lot of responsibility to shoulder and his father demands that he marry within a month. So much pressure! I don't know if I could handle it--I would take the first person that I met, but he's very meticulous in his choosing.

Amelia, now orphaned, becomes a companion to Anthony's mom through a connection of a friend. She can't help being intrigued by Anthony and seems to be conveniently around when he needs a friend. She's such a sweet and likable girl and just the kind of person anyone would want for a true friend and confidante.

There is a definite attraction between them and I looked forward to their interactions, banter, and romantic interludes. Each is fiercely loyal to the other and willing to do whatever it takes to protect the other--all without even realizing it. The London ton can be quite brutal, which isn't surprising. I always enjoy the day-to-day activities of the era and catching a glimpse into the lives of the well-to-do in Regency London. It fascinates me, captures my attention, and I really adored this story.

Content: mild romance. Clean!

Ooh, I really loved this book. That's always a good way to start out a review, right?

The characters in this book felt real to me and I really liked them. They had so many good attributes that it was easy to settle in and enjoy them.

Amelia is kind. She is at the mercy of others for her welfare and she knows it, yet she conducts herself with dignity and decorum. She is smart and she knows how to stand up for herself without appearing arrogant or rude. I love the quiet strength she has.

Even though Anthony is struggling with the awful events of the war he was involved in, he is also a kind person. He shows respect to others. He is a very duty conscious person and his desire to protect others is so admirable.

I loved how the characters circled and swirled around each other. There is chemistry and interest and it all just felt good. This will be going down as one of my favorite books for this month!

I'm so torn on this book! I thought there were a lot of cute parts, the story was a great idea, and the writing was good, but there were also a lot of things that I wasn't a huge fan of. First I feel that Anthony just uses Amelia to calm his "demons" (PTSD) and basically as a kissing buddy. I wouldn't have had a problem with her helping him overcome his guilt and experience he had in the war if only he had been more willing to get to know her on that same level, (***spoiler alert***) because she knew all his deep dark personal secrets and all he knew was that her parents weren't really her parents and that she could play the piano really well. In a healthy, balanced relationship there needs to be equal emotional sharing, which I felt did not happen in this relationship. Also there was a part where he shared something really big about his time in the war that I felt it got brushed over and accepted too quickly, when for me that would have been something that needed to be discussed thoroughly if not a deal breaker to the relationship. And maybe I misread that part? Something else that really bugged me was that he almost viewed her as an object a lot of time and I felt that the romance was pushing what was appropriate for the time period and what would be considered a clean romance. Then something else that kind of ticked me off is he never really comes out and says he isn't marrying her out of duty or that he loves her, even though that is the number one thing that she is worried about. She also counts him calling her "my love" (only twice) as saying he loves her. I think this was crazy, that him saying this short little endearment placates her after this was one of her biggest worries about agreeing to marry him. At least for me that wouldn't count. I think if he really knew her, which I felt that he didn't, he would know that she would need a little more than that.

I enjoyed this book. I did come to believe the characters loved each other. The book is about their growth, and healing his from PTSD and her from a lower societal standings. The villain was a tad over the top but that is what novels do is have good win over evil.

It's always great to read these stories by Karen Tuft and to encounter other characters from her other novels. I feel as if I am apart of the family. Not quite a series, but I am intending to read her other back titles so that I can read of the other characters to see them get their own HEA. Loved Anthony and Amelia's story.

I'm always on the prowl for a new to me historical romance book to grab me and this one did. Not because it was sensational or melodramatic, but because it had an authentic and understated quality to it that paired well with the smoldering attraction of the romantic pair in this story of class issues, post-war stress and guilt, grief, and a little mystery.

The story opens with the arrival home and 'back from the dead' of war torn Anthony Hargreaves, the new heir to his father after the tragic death of his older brother, Alexander, Earl of Halford. Anthony wants a quiet time of peace after the horrors he saw and experiences at Badajoz, but his father has different intentions. The Marquess has had a scare when he thought his family line was ended with the deaths of two sons. One is back and that one will get busy and make a match and give the Marquess an heir. The pressure is hard on Anthony, but he will do his duty even if his eye keeps straying to the serene and lovely Miss Amelia Clarke, his mother's paid companion.

Amelia lost her beloved parents and home all at once. She was desperate and still grieving when an old family friend gets her a position as companion to dear Lady Ashworth. She is there through Lord and Lady Ashworth's deep grief at losing their sons, one in a riding accident and one at war and then when Lord Ashworth's health deteriorates. They are like family to her now even if her status is now woefully below theirs. She wants to rejoice when the rumors of one son's death are false, but Anthony unsettles her. She is attracted and he is never to be hers. Amelia watches as Anthony has all the eligible ladies paraded before him, but it is the desolate sadness in his eyes that makes her reach out to offer comfort. Amelia knows about grief and loss though his nightmares, terrible memories, and struggles can be a little frightening.

An accidental compromise changes everything for both of them. They might muddle through to something good if the situation hadn't created a strong and powerful enemy.

As I said earlier, I loved the feel of this story. The author blends a feel for the style of classic authors in this Regency era historical with some slightly spicy romance. I might be stretching it, but I could sense a blend a few authors and famous classics of the past.

The class differences and the mystery of Amelia's past are the source of most of the conflict for the pair. They are surrounded by an array of social climbers, well-meaning family, and a couple of greedy enemies.

I was taken with this story and it was definitely a case of right time and right book. I will be watching out for more from this author. I would recommend this one to those who enjoy slightly spicy Regency Romance.

I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

The Hargreaves family has been in deep mourning. The heir to the Marquessate, the Earl of Halford, has been killed in a horseback riding accident. His father has had a heart attack over the news. And then the final blow came when the youngest son, Anthony, is declared to be a casualty of war. It seems the family will never truly recover from their misfortunes.

But then, there's a knock on the door, and Anthony is there, returned from the dead. He'd been shot and in the weeks it took to nurse him back to health, he was erroneously reported dead. But now he's back and his family is overjoyed. Anthony is glad to be back with his family, but he is still haunted by what happened to him in the war and he wonders if he could ever be truly happy or feel peace. And then he meets his mother's paid companion, Amelia Clarke. He's drawn to her, but knows it can never be, until an unforeseen event forces them together. Can they truly find love? Or will misunderstandings and the gossip-wagging elite of the ton always be between them?

I really enjoyed this author's writing style. This was my first book that I've read of hers and I thought she did a great job with the depth of characters and really giving them layers. The tortured hero, Anthony, was very sympathetic and easy to love and Amelia seemed his perfect match. I loved that they were both insecure at heart, but with each other, found strength even in the most trying of circumstances. The setting was true to the period and allowed the reader to get lost in the societal rules and restrictions of the time while not losing the emotion of the story. There was a little mystery that was solved right at the end that felt rushed and confusing in its explanation (I had to read it twice and I'm still not sure if I actually got it) and the villain didn't receive the punishment I would have wished, but the love story is where the author really shone in her talent and readers will close the book with a sigh of happiness. Karen Tuft books will definitely be on my to-buy list in the future!

This is a delightful regency book. I liked the characters from the moment they were introduced in the story. Amelia is a down to earth woman who is ahead of her time. She was raised by pastor father who taught her the importance of thought and education. She is articulate and loves the people around her.

From the moment Amelia meets Anthony, the son who unexpectedly returned from the War against Bonaparte, there is an undeniable attraction. The problem is that socially she is his inferior. The dialogue between the two is full of banter and teasing. I loved every minute of it.

This book has everything that I hope for from a regency novel. I love a couple making things work despite society trying to rip them apart. The story kept me turning the pages and waiting to see how it will all work out. Karen Tuft kept the pacing of the book steady and did a wonderful job at laying down her plot and describing the environment (physical, political, and emotional).

This is a clean regency romance that would be appropriate for readers of all ages.

A sweet, historical tale of romance combined with the effects of war on the human mind.

I enjoyed the plot twists and historical references, and I consider myself a great suspender of disbelief, but I found some of the plot to be implausible. However, the writing was very good and I did enjoy the love story.

If you're in the mood for a Regency sweet romance with depth- in characters and in content, then The Earl's Betrothal is a book I recommend for you! Amelia is kind and compassionate, feeling grief not only for her own losses but the more recent losses of the family she now serves. I admired the strong foundation of faith that sustained her and helped her stand up in the face of society's disdain.

Anthony struggled with the darker aspects of war- the abuse of the citizens of Spain by his own soldiers, especially the women who suffered at their hands in the aftermath of battle. He has a soft heart for the women in his life and Amelia's presence in the family allows her to slip right under his defenses and offer what he needed most- acceptance.

I particularly enjoyed Anthony's friend Lucas, who shared wartime experiences with him and was in the unique position of providing support simply by knowing what he had been through and encouraging him to work toward forgiving himself.

The story doesn't follow a typical timeline for the developing relationship which was a bit refreshing, and kept me on my toes to see what twists would keep the plot moving forward. There are pleasing details of some fashion and dresses, balls and society gatherings, but it never distracted from the drama- instead the author used them as opportunities to develop and show the personalities of her cast.

Without revealing any spoilers, one particular twist in the story seemed out of place and incongruous with the rest of the book, adding a level of melodrama I didn't think was necessary.

Overall, the exchanges between Amelia and Anthony as they seek to protect each other are the best parts that stand out and had me reading swiftly to reach their next interaction :)

I absolutely adore regency romance novels and Karen Tuft’s The Earl’s Betrothal was a new and delightful read! Off fighting in the war Captain Lord Anthony Hargreaves returns home from battle to discover that his family all thought he was dead. His return is quite a shock, but brings about much excitement. Upon his arrival home though much has changed, his mother has a pretty, talented, and well-spoken companion, Amelia Clarke. His sickly father also wants him to marry and produce an heir quickly, adding to the intensity of his problems. When Captain Hargreaves is unintentionally caught in a compromising situation with Ms. Clarke, he announces that they are engaged in order to save her reputation. But although, Captain Hargreaves is home and soon to wed, he is still haunted by what he saw and witnessed in the war. With social hostilities against Amelia intensifying, and the demons of the war still haunting Captain Hargreaves, will they be able to find love? Karen has written a beloved, sweet regency romance. With enjoyable characters and a page turning story from beginning to end. This novel is full of wit, humor, compromising situations, war demons, and perhaps even love. This novel is one that every regency romance reader will not want to miss.

When Lord Anthony Hargreaves returns to England, he discovers his family had been informed he was dead. His father was nearly killed by the news. In his desperation to see the family name continue the Marquess commands his son to marry right away and present him with an heir within a year.

The Earl is not ready to consider marriage. He still has living nightmares that torment him at times during the day and as he sleeps each night. He finds himself attracted to his mother’s companion though. She is also attracted to him. His admiration leads to a hasty engagement. Can Lord Anthony and Miss Clarke overcome all the objections around them including their own?

I very much enjoyed this sweet and clean romance. It was refreshingly charming, witty, and unexpected. I loved each of the characters and that a couple of them are adorable toddlers. There were a couple moments when I wondered how historically accurate some aspects were but it did not mar the experience. I love that it depicted the traumatic effects of war so realistically. It was healing to read about the characters dealing with the burdens of guilt and self doubts. I particularly enjoyed the way religion naturally formed an important part throughout the book as characters prayed to God for help. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!

I prefer a slower build to the romance, there was entirely too much kissing too early in the book. It could have been stronger without the despicable, evil villain, as there were already sufficient barriers to the romance. Also, I usually am not bothered by such details but after reading many, many romance novels with a regency setting the vitally important dinner scene, where the ire of the villain is first raised, should never have happened at least not without explaining why the conversational rules of the day were not being observed. I am also getting a bit tired of an epilogue showing a happy husband and wife contemplating the arrival of a child, It rarely adds anything important to the story and was completely unnecessary in this instance as we had already had a wedding.
However, all that said, the hero and heroine were very likable, I really wanted them to get together and the book as a whole was an enjoyable if not perfect read.

I really enjoyed this sweet clean regency. The writing was good and the characters were the base and flow of this book. I loved how much time and dialogue there was between the love interests. There was a lot of the side characters too that made me think there would be other stories. You get interested in the other lives and want to know what happened to them. This book had a small religious undertone, but the kisses were sweet and passionate. I look forward to more:}

The Earl's Betrothal is going on my favorite's shelf with my other well-loved regencies. Not only is it well-written and compelling, but I fell in love with the characters immediately. Anthony and Amelia are the kind of characters that I thoroughly enjoy reading about. Anthony arrives home from the war in Spain to discover that his older brother, the heir to the Marquess of Ashworth, has been killed in an accident and he is now the Earl of Halford. But haunted by his experiences in Spain, he struggles with nightmares and feeling worthy of his new position and the responsibilities it entails.

Amelia, the untitled daughter of a vicar, works as Lady Ashworth's companion. Her kind temperament, yet educated mind intrigue Anthony from the moment they meet. The attraction between the two is clear from the beginning, but the obstacles between them are legion. Amelia works for the Ashworth's for one thing and little is known about her background and family. Anthony promises his father he will marry quickly in order to carry on the family line, but is reluctant to burden any woman with his past. But a moment of temptation leads to the two becoming betrothed. But opposition and scandal as well as the pair's own past experiences threaten to derail the relationship.

I found this book a quick read but also a story to relish. For those who enjoy clean regency romances, I can highly recommend this one. The plot has more than enough twists and turns to be satisfying along with plenty of romance.

This is a great example of a regency romance! I loved the whole thing!

I loved Amelia, she's working as a companion to Lady Ashworth who has lost both of her sons in the last year and her husband appears to be on his deathbed as well. But fate changes things when Lady Ashworth's second son, Anthony, walks through their door and back into their lives. It seems he wasn't really dead after all. I loved the way Amelia felt an instant attraction to Anthony, but because of her low-born station, she doesn't feel that there's any way that attraction will ever lead to anything else.

Anthony...his character was great as well! I loved that he was able to continue on, even though he was thrust into his older brother's position as soon as he got home from his part of the war. I loved the sweet way he interacts with his parents and the way he treats Amelia from the very beginning.

And I love the way that their love story comes about, and just how hard the whole thing is for both of them. There were parts that I just wanted to cry because things were so hard for them! Such a great story and book!

Anthony has returned from war wounded, both physically and emotionally. He saw and did things that continue to torture home. As soon as Anthony walks through the door, he notices Amelia. Amelia is an orphan and a paid companion to Anthony's mother. Amelia is quiet, yet strong. She provides Anthony with the room and strength to heal.

This book started out a little slow but soon picked up and got to the point where I had to keep reading so I could find out what happens! The romance is clean, but the kissing starts pretty early in this book, which is fun but unusual for this type of book. There are flashbacks where Anthony is taken back to war in his nightmares and thoughts, and while we understand that bad things happened, it wasn't overly graphic, which I appreciated. Since Amelia was a vicar's daughter, there is mention of prayers, and that vengeance belongs to God, but nothing preachy.

If you like clean regency, I bet you would like this book!

I could not seem to read this book fast enough! It just grabbed me from the get-go and never let my interest go! I am a new reader to Tuft and now I will be reading all future books from her! I loved both Anthony and Amelia. Each had their own problems to overcome, each doubted their self-worth and each had to learn to accept themselves. I really loved the drama, the gossiping ton, the danger, the drama and the love story! A must-read regency novel, The Earl's Betrothal will keep you reading until the very last page!

3.5 - I liked the storyline and how the author showed Anthony's troubles with post traumatic stress after fighting in the war. It did have the common, "Im not good enough for him - how could he possibly love me" theme which gets tiring after a while.

I’m really starting to like the Regency Romance books! They speak of a different time of kindness, chivalry, being respectful and trying to avoid scandal. They had their scandal’s too as one of the characters had a mistress. But overall, I love it!

The Earl’s Betrothal has 2 POV’s by both Amelia and Anthony. The story telling is well written. I was totally engaged throughout the book. The descriptions made it easy to see what was going on in my head. The characters were easy to understand and to either like or dislike as some of them were!! I also loved Lucas! He is a good friend. Maybe we will get a story on him???

Amelia is now living with the Ashworth’s after her parents died. She has no other living relatives and her father told her on his death bed to seek out Lady Walmsley. She did and was recommended to be the companion of Lady Ashworth. Amelia works hard and cares even harder for those in the household.

Then the second son of the Marques comes home after being declared dead during the war. They were mourning the loss of both sons but now they have something to celebrate. The father was doing very poorly and is recovering some after his son, Anthony, returns. Anthony now the Earl of Harlford has returned but he seems to suffer nightmares and nausea from some of the experiences he witnessed. He is mostly recovered from a gunshot wound as well. He wants peace and solitude. His father demands of him to marry soon and produce heirs.

When Anthony and Amelia first meet, they are attracted to each other. But it is not acceptable for them to ever be together with their different social classes. But sometimes, the heart wants what the heart wants.

This is their story of struggle with their attraction to one another and some stolen kisses that were eventually caught by others. Now Anthony will marry her to keep her reputation intact. But it isn’t that easy and there is an enemy keeping them apart as well as society and Anthony’s own demons to name a few.

Anthony will need Amelia to help him heal. Amelia will need Anthony to help her navigate in his world. The little things they do for each other are oh so sweet! Okay, I am totally swooning!

It is a beautiful love story in a far gone time. The ending will make you cry and sigh!

Sweet & moving story, with two characters from opposite places in society, that break the rules and fall in love. Regency romances are my favourite, and I've read a lot of them. Sometimes you can get the feeling that you've read this plot before. In 'The Earl's Betrothal', in the beginning you could be forgiven for thinking that. However, as the story develops it really comes into its own. Anthony, second son of a Marquess, is home from war, and surprises the family as it was thought he had died. He is now the heir, as his older brother met an early death in a riding accident. With the weight of responsibility on his shoulders & suffering with the mental trauma of his experiences in Spain - his father is anxious for him to marry & wants him to travel to London, possibly also to consider Lady Elizabeth, the daughter of a Duke, who was betrothed to his older brother. However, Amelia, paid companion of his mother, and living in the family home, crosses his path frequently and the compatibility of these two becomes obvious. She is kind, well mannered and sensitive to Anthony and knows he is in need of support and help. I what starts out as a caring friendship, the attraction between the two is hard to deny, and despite crossing obvious social faux pas, they seem to be perfectly destined to be together. Things do not go as they hoped and difficulties and troubles ensue.

There's a quality to the writing that I see in other established authors of this era, and it had a very natural flow to the storyline. Unhurried, at a easy pace. There's plenty twists & turns along the way to keep the excitement and attention of the reader.

I fully enjoyed this story, the characters, of which there are many, but they are easy to keep track of. I would love to see a story about Elizabeth & Kit, who I had a feeling should be together. A fantastic read that I would recommend to all those who love a clean regency romance.

Thank you to Netgalley & Covenant Communications for the digital galley in return for my honest review.

Romance, clean, period; some descriptions of war, and crime so PG-13
Amelia and Anthony's story was even better on a second read. Interesting back story with Anthony almost being a casualty of war, and thought dead, and Amelia being an orphan, and a companion to his mother. Their attraction gradually building with Amelia's way of helping others, speaking her mind, diplomatically, and with care for her circumstances, and the Earl's broken spirit, suffering from the war and flashbacks, his tiredness for machinations and women after his name and title, and not himself. Amelia's kind, genuine nature, her beauty along with her intelligence without cruelty, and her perceptive nature with regard to Lord Hargreaves flashbacks and war memories, along with lack of sleep while trying to fulfill his duty (in so many myriad ways) made for a compelling story. The side stories, both of their families, his father's illness and brother's death, the fiancee that might be, the conflicts, misunderstandings, and of course, their sweet moments together made for a lovely read. Sweet romance, but there is some tension with some war crimes described, and another attack later in the novel, so not perhaps for a tender heart, but still so compelling to draw to Anthony as a character as he struggles to acclimate back to life outside of battle and injury. This was told from alternating points of view, and thoughtfully done. I loved the honest, hurting hearts in this story, the main characters that had such strong core values, side strong side characters that were so well drawn, and such an important part of the novel and of course, the sweet and tender romance that grew between the two main characters. Gorgeous cover a plus!
I received a copy from Net Galley in exchange for a fair and honest review, my opinions are my own.

Clean regency romance

This was a great regency romance! It hooked me from the beginning and I wanted to keep reading. It had a lot of obstacles to the romance that weren’t lack of communication, which can be too common in books. Great first read for me by this author. 4.5 stars.

This was a decent historical romance. It had all the elements one expects from a book in this genre. It was a "clean" romance with only kissing to be found but that did not keep it from being passionate or romantic. The romance slowly builds nicely and sweetly. The main characters are nice and fleshed out. The few problems I have with this book are that I felt there really was no true conflict in the plot even with the mystery of parentage and I felt that the writer added some unnecessary nonsense and unrealistic cruelty toward the end to move the plot along to conclusion. That point in the book felt odd and unbelievable in so many ways. It was obviously used to hinge the rest of the story on but it was oddly done. The conclusion to the parentage issue after being the main problem of the story was resolved only at the end and in a very silly way and very quickly. Almost like an afterthought.

Despite the obvious issues I had with it, it was one of the more enjoyable historical romances that I have read this year.

I received this from NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review.
