Still reeling from the death of President Glass, Deputy Marshal Mason Raines finds himself working for the New Colony. Using his unique skills as both lawman and soldier, he leads an elite team tasked with retrieving critical supplies for mankind's last survivors. While delivering goods to an independent food supplier, known only as "The Farm," Mason uncovers a secret that goes against all that it means to be human. Refusing to join their ranks, he soon finds himself the target of a man willing to do anything to keep that secret from being revealed.
Hundreds of miles away, Tanner and Samantha investigate a cryptic call from the Watts Bar Nuclear Facility. There they discover a menace so great that it threatens to leave the surrounding area forever uninhabitable. When Tanner is captured by a militia group, Samantha is faced with not only surviving on her own, but also finding a way to secure his escape.
With Tanner and Samantha away, Issa secretly departs for Mount Weather to share the exciting news of her pregnancy. Armed with an elephant rifle and her two trusty blades, she discovers a band of men trafficking in those who have been afflicted with the virus. It is then that Issa must decide where her loyalties lie, as well as how much risk she and her unborn child can endure.
Events have made me who I am, neither a hardcore survivalist nor an all-trusting soul. I am a Boy Scout in the truest sense of the word—dedicated to family, country, and good citizenship. As you may already know, an enabling element of those ideals is being prepared.
It took the horrific events of 9/11 to wake me from my routine complacency. In one single moment, I came to realize that our world is not as safe as we would all like to believe. We have no guarantee of safety in this world. Disasters occur on an almost daily basis all around the globe. Major events in recent years have included the devastating tsunamis striking Japan and the coast of Sumatra, the rash of tornadoes that swept across the U.S. in 2011, Hurricane Katrina, the deadly earthquake in Haiti, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to name just a few.
I believe with all my heart that we have a duty to prepare our families for the dangers they face. I started my preparation by reading nearly every disaster preparedness book currently available. If you check Amazon, you will see that I am the #1 reviewer for many of these books. Even with all the material out there, I could not find a single book that offered a complete, well-reasoned approach to practical preparedness. As a NASA engineer, I took up the challenge by conducting very careful research – disecting fact from folklore. Three years and many thousands of dollars later, I have finally released a handbook that offers well-researched advice that can be put into practice in the real world by normal families.
I wrote this handbook for my own family, but I would be honored to share it with yours. If you are not fully satisfied with the Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family, send it back, and I’ll refund your money, no questions asked.
The Survivalist series continues with “Dark Days (#8). Although not as strong as some of the other entries in the series, the author has perfected an enjoyable mix of adventure and action in this post apocalyptic American landscape.
We find Deputy Marshal Raines and his team scavenging supplies for survivors. Delivering these supplies to an outpost known as The Farm, Raines uncovers some horrific details regarding the food the camp has been serving to the colonists. The leader of the compound, Locke pleads his case to Raines and asks him to join forces in an effort to prevent future problems, train his rag-tag forces, and continue to retrieve supplies as he had been doing. Raines cannot abide what is going on within the compound and must refuse the offer. Locke is way too accommodating and Raines doesn’t trust him as far as he can throw him. Tanner and Samantha are up to their ears in trouble following up on another of Sam’s ideas, this one involving cats and witches. Once that detour is taken care of they continue their mission to recon the local nuclear facility. They rescue the operators that were left to care for the facility and were being held captive by a militia group bent on doing dastardly deeds. Meanwhile Issa heads back to Mount Weather to tell her peers about her pregnancy. Issa believes this news will brighten their outlook and bring hope back into their lives. This has been a great story with lots of action, great characters; well-developed and very likable. The narrator, John Farrell, has done a great job throughout the series. Did I say it was great?
Another interesting set of adventures for the Raines's. Sam and Tanner throwing themselves into the deepend of trouble and causing all manner of mayhem while it seemed that Mason had started to find a place to settle in one of the new colonies.
There's plenty of action, all around and more than a bit of misdirection which adds in nicely to the events.
The only issue I have with the books so far is that the "Teams" that President Pike sent out in Book 1 have not been encountered since and seeing as they were all required to be incommunado for six months, and with the amount of travelling that our heroes do, they should have come across them more than the one occasion that Mason did outside of Boone.
Overall, a good book with lots of useful information wrapped up into a good story.
Another great book in The Survivalist series. Bradley continues to create an enjoyable book with a great plot filled with plenty of adventures. For some reason, I thought there were only 8 books in the series. I was ecstatic find out there are actually 12 books. I can't wait to see what else happens to the characters and where the next plot will take them. I thoroughly enjoy Bradley's style of writing. He is witty, funny, and filled with knowledge when it comes to survival skills. I have learned so much from reading these books. I also love the occasional illustrations. I wish there were more. I highly recommend this series.
I appreciated the author's vigorous attempt to envision the danger of nuclear plant meltdowns where the grid has failed...and play out the confrontation at the nuke plant scenario with the misguided militia group. One of the best of the series.
I really enjoy the story line, the characters are great and I love the ribbing that Samantha and Tanner give each other. Keep up the good work. Always hard to put the book down.
Dang I could not put it down, again! I think that I like this one the best of all but, I also think that the author should have finished the story of the wife.
I love this series more with each book! With the craziness going on around us today, I often think are we close to this? I definitely want a Tanner, Mason and Samantha on my side. Looking forward to more of this series
Everything Bradley writes is excellent. He places: you the reader where you feel you are an observer in the action. As if you were part of the characters. I've come to identify with them. Also the different events they find themselves in. Waiting for # 10 to roll off the press.
*Note: This review was based upon a complimentary copy of the novel tendered by the author.*
I was pleasantly surprised with the way the previous novel in the series tied up the metanarrative that ran through the first seven books and was cautiously optimistic about the direction that our beloved characters would take in future iterations; Dark Days proved to be not merely a worthy beginning to their new adventures but an all-around enthralling read. I felt like the pace was consistent throughout and, though understandably lighter on the action sequences than its predecessors, the novel still provided plenty of punch when the opportunity presented itself.
If you were a fan of the first set of novels then I would wholeheartedly encourage you to continue along with the gang as they pursue new avenues of action and adventure. A great read through-and-through. Can't wait for #9 Freedom Lost.
Here is another fantastic read in the Survivalist series by Arthur Bradley! I love his stories of Marshall Mason Raines and his family survival. If you haven't started reading this series, now is the time. You won't be sorry!!!
I am not disappointed, just when you thought things might settle down and maybe things could start to find some normalcy, more trouble is found. Tanner and Samantha's relationship is by far one of my favorites in all the books I have read. I could read their interactions all day. Even in the most for of situations, they make me laugh, and in the version of the World their in, that says a lot. Extremely excited for book 9.
What an awesome series have enjoyed every one and looking for book 9. Surely didn't see the twist coming in book 8, expected that character to remain. I found these after book six, and like Krispy Kreme donuts couldn't put them down. Well done Mr. Bradley keep them coming. You think Hollywood could make a series out of these?
THE STORY OF REBUILDING AND DESTROYING CONTINUES IT DOES..
Hello, these is a really good series. This one, however, did not hold the luster of the previous books. Not bad, just not 5 stars like the previous ones. Thanks.
Just as the earlier chapters, his one reads like an action movie. The only bad thing about it, was that I finished the book and that I am looking forward to read the next
Love these books but they need to be longer. I keep having to remind myself to slow down. These are great character driven stories with useful facts worked in seamlessly. On ly one book left. What will I read then
