Cosey (real name Bernard Cosendai) is one of those creators who’s very acclaimed in the world of Franco-Belgian comics but is barely known to Anglophone readers. In 2017, he even won the Grand Prix at Angoulême – a sort of lifetime achievement award and arguably the most prestigious award in all of comics – and yet I've never once heard him mentioned by an Anglophone comic fan and none of his work seems to be in print in English.

I absolutely loved his comic Le voyage en Italie (which I believe at some point has been published in English under the title In Search of Shirley), a moving and melancholic work about middle-aged romance and PTSD. Unfortunately, Orchidea – the story of three adult siblings looking for their father, who’s disappeared from his retirement home – doesn’t do much for me at all. It’s clearly supposed to be a character-driven work, but the characters are all unbelievable, underdeveloped and just uninteresting. What’s more, the tone is all over the place, so I struggled to understand which parts were supposed to be serious and which meant to be light-hearted, which made it difficult to care about any of the conflicts. To top it off, the central plot is a bit ridiculous, the pacing seems off and the dialogue is often clunky and unnatural. The only real positive here is the artwork. As in Le voyage en Italie, Cosey is great at drawing landscapes, buildings and vehicles. There are some particularly lovely urban scenes at the beginning, though later on things become a bit less visually interesting, as the backgrounds become barren deserts.

After reading this comic, I do remain interested in Cosey – he has a few works I haven’t read that are more acclaimed than Orchidea – but he’s certainly fallen in my estimation. In any case, it certainly seems Anglophone readers aren’t missing out on much with Orchidea.

Cosey - Orchidea (Fibra)

Ellsworth Humelsine is a distinguished retired professor. When his children decide to surprise him to celebrate his eightieth birthday, they are notified of Ellsworth disappearance. Usually, he always returned within 24 hours. But another resident of Big Bear Resthome for the Elderly tells them about their fathers' Orchidea, a “story about stars and life in the universe”.

Virgil has eight children and a maid who can't do the job, Ruby is an unlucky actress and Seymour is an awkward hitch. Both are well established in their adult life, but only in appearance. As they look for their father, they ramble on each other's lives, share problems, relapses and their own self-centeredness. When they find Ellsworth, they notice him younger and get to finally meet Orchidea.

The story is beautiful but not brilliant and I ended up being a bit disappointed since the narrative make me suspect a different ending. Aesthetically it's appealing: the colour palette is dull, revolving around blues, browns and yellows, and there's a great visual description, with composite backdrops.

I do recommend it but, if you haven't read anything by Cosey yet, maybe you should start with Looking for Peter Pan, a comic about Melvin Z. Woodworth, a British writer who comes to seek inspiration for his third novel in the village of Ardolaz, in the Valesian Alps. It's a journey into the past, punctuated by quotes from Peter Pan by James M. Barrie.

I had some mixed feelings about this Cosey's story.
The main characters have their fair share of contradictions and are not very... likeable.
The apparently mundane plot walks and jumps ocasionally, nut keeps you guessing all the way till the end.
It's not a fairy tale, far from it, but you'll enjoy the end. Well, I did.

Tip: If you enjoy Cosey's narrative style and fancy Italy, try to find/read the 2-volume "Trip to Italy".
It's a small pearl.

Great story and detailed artwork about three siblings who travel to visit his father on his birthday only to find that his life is no longer as they expected. Captivating and entertaining, it is well worth reading.
