BEFORE life wasn’t perfect. Peyton Parker was grieving the loss of her father. Brodee Fisher was battling for control over his future with his father. But every summer, their families came together to rejuvenate and lose themselves in the salt air of Cape Hatteras. Nothing could put a damper on the sun, sand, and surf.
Mindy is the youngest of six children and grew up in San Diego, California. After graduating from Brigham Young University-Idaho, she discovered her passion for reading and writing. Mindy lives in Summerville, South Carolina with her husband and daughter.
She is the author of the Faylinn novels and the Willowhaven series; as well as the standalones, Stain and The Day That Saved Us. Mindy is also the co-author of the Paper Planes series and the Backroads Duet, which was co-written with Michele G. Miller as Mindy Michele.
I am conflicted right now. I decided I wanted to read this book ever since I read Paper Planes and discover Mindy, I knew Michelle from the Wreckage.
This story started out great, young best friends who discovered they were in love right before their life is about to change. What happenes with their parents changes things even more, I understand it, but I didn't like Peyton's reactions or the way she treated Brodee after. The book continues their life and we suffered with him, she was kind of mean in my opinion and at the end her reasons for staying away weren't good enough for me. They get their happy ending but I believe she wasn't good enough for him after all she said to him.
Brodee on the other hand is handsome, funny and loyal to the extreme. He deserves all the happiness in the world. He loves Peyton with his whole heart and never gives up. He's just amazing. The secondary characters are great too. Overall it was a great story, it's just the book spends most of it with a constant drama and the ending then felt too rushed.
Not really one to read young adult novels, I somehow stumbled upon this in KU and thought why not? It was a clean YA story with adult themes and I felt like it was probably targeted more toward the adult audience due to the heavy subject matter. It was definitely a great story and the angst and drama kept me interested. I admit it pulled at my heartstrings toward the end, given I could relate to the feelings that Peyton was having when dealing with her health issues. This is my first book from this author and I liked how well written it was, as well as her writing style. Definitely will check out more of her books when I'm in the mood for non-smutty books.
Definitely a romance book (or a diary?) with a soap-opera-ish feeling to it.. um... that's it. The author uses direct characterization which made the whole thing quite boring. The protagonist seems like a stalker who knows every freaking detail about her crush, which was creepy. The other main character gives off the image of Barbie Ken.
From the book: "For some reason with Brodee, everything he does is cool. The way he handles himself and can make anyone laugh. The way he casually paces a room when he gets a little anxious. The way he treats others and doesn’t allow others to be treated. He really doesn’t care about what people think. He’s endearing without even trying."
Me: I don't know about you but it seems like a male version of Mary Sue to me.
I’ll be honest, I judge books by their covers. I had purchased this book for two years ago for my kindle but it never said read me. I don’t know why I didn’t because I have literally loved everything by Mindy. I finally decided to start this book while up with midnight cuddles and feeding with my infant. I have few regrets in my life and waiting two years to read this book is one of them.
This book instantly hooked me. The character development had me so engrossed that I have to take a break because I was emotional upset when it wasn’t going my way. This book spends multiple years but does it so seamless it’s like all the times has passed with no time passing.
This is a book that I wish I could read for the first time many times.
In a few words from my favorite movie and from a highly recommended book, “don’t cry shop girl”
I just adored this book. Mindy Hayes is one of my new favorite authors I discovered this year. And I found I already had a couple of her books on my tablet already. Bonus.
Peyton and Brodee have been best friends since birth. Their families do everything together. So you know how it'll pan out in the end. But a big obstacle to-do occurs that really throws Peyton for a loop, especially. Which is why the 4 star rating because she drove me nuts refusing to see what I saw. But I still love her and I love Brodee. Great story. Wonderful writing.
"There's beauty in a new beginning. It brings the opportunity to create something more, sometging better."
I loved this book so much. What a beautiful story. I loved Brodee so much, and it was like I was feeling all of his pain. I sobbed like a baby, I laughed, and I got very angry with both Brodee and Peyton constantly, but this book was amazing. Their story was beautifuk. I loved every second of this.
I loved the main characters - I liked how their relationship grew and changed. I really loved how the perspective changed half way through the book and that it wasn't with the character you would probably initially think should be telling the story at that time.
- After resolution at the end I wish there would have been more about them and their future...cause ya know, a good book always leave you wanting to read more.

I’m so mad at myself for having waited so long to read this. So mad.
This book brought out every emotion in me. I laughed, I cried, I raged, I cried, I raged a lot more and then cried some more. I always know I’m really enjoying a book when I start talking out loud to the characters.
I really like how Mindy Hayes writes and this book doesn't disappoint. Loved how Mindy portraits so many different emotions in the characters and how they all struggle and have difficult times just as Life is. Great work!
I really enjoyed reading this book and didn't want to put it down. I went from loving the characters to being frustrated with them. This book has many ups and downs. But also has lots of laughter. ☺️
I really loved this book but it would have been better in a trilogy or two parter. The beginning on the book develops well but then things started to feel rushed. It covers such a long period of time I felt as though we needed to have more of the story. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking because I enjoyed the characters so much! It’s a cute best friends to lovers YA set on the beach. Much better than Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty series in my opinion.
I choose a 5 star rating on this book because there weren't more stars to give it. The store of Peyton and Brodee is more than a romance. Best friends since childhood, they find themselves feeling more than friends their last summer before college. But right before they are able to get used to these feelings, their family's have news that turns their lives upside down. Even best friends may not get through it. Mindy has found a way to make the reader care for these 2 characters as much as they care for each other. I cried throughout the book, loving every word. I recommend this book to anyone who has a best friend they love.
I enjoyed most parts of this book. there were parts in the middle during Peyton's pov that felt very redundant and I got annoyed with some of the characters during some parts of the book. the ending I enjoyed, I could really feel the love that the was between the two friends. all in all it could have been worse and it could have been better. it was definitely not one of those books I can read more than one time
This was really good but sad in allot of ways. At times I wanted to roll my eyes(and I probably did) because of the naive girl Peyton was. I mean poor Brodee the guy did nothing but run after her and she found one excuse after another. It's like she wanted to be unhappy, but I guess the heartache she endured in the beginning who wouldn't. There was some grammar issues but I had worse, I just went with it. All and all it was a book I couldn't put down...
Cute story line! It was a little hard to figure out the timeline of the book because it was 5 years ago for half the book and then 4yrs later and then 5 yrs ago and then 4 yrs later and then 2 years ago and on and on. Also would have liked to have more flirty moments between the two not always super serious
