In 1889, on the beautiful Mizen peninsula lives a young woman called Ellen. Although the daughter of a simple fisherman, she is no ordinary woman. Ellen is a healer, with a heart and spirit as wild and free as the Atlantic Ocean she lives beside. She devotes her life to helping others, often in secret. But when a stranger, in the fine clothes of the landed gentry, is washed up on the sand in front of her remote cottage, she is fearful of helping him because of the trouble he could bring to her and those she loves.Trying to stay faithful to a warning her grandmother passed on to her, Ellen has to do all she can to protect herself and her home from this stranger. But perhaps it s the stranger and his heart that needs protection from her
I hadn't read a physical book in 4 years. I just couldn't find any book that captured my interest in the first 2 chapters and then this book took me by surprise. This author has it. The ability to engage and capture you within the first pages. Try reading this book, its full of hope and if you don't fall in love with Ellen there is no hope for you. As a 53 year old man this swept me off my feet. Maria Murphy, thank you. Hollywood should buy the rights to this book
Without doubt, the most engaging book I have read in 10 years. The mix is eclectic, the tension between spirituality and religion, between connection to body and spirit. Ellen is fascinating. If this book doesn't evoke beauty and intensity, then I'm lost. Against the backdrop of hungry mouths and yearning hearts, this is a page turner and the writer crafts situations and words with such beautiful simplicity
First time reading this authors work and I loved it. The subtle twist, the loveable characters and descriptive writing had you wrapped up in the book from the offset.
I enjoyed the book, however the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars was due to the editing - typos etc which any good editor should have picked up. A lovely light read and step back in time.
Not as good as 'Martha', which was a lovely read. Rescued is a bit predictable, it tried too hard to be 'popular' with themes around the lesbian couple and having a go off the clergy etc. In trying to bring current themes, it lacked authenticity and didn't have the originality that her first book had.
