Ethan & Wyatt #2

Boyfriend Material

Rate this book
Physically, it’s easy for Ethan and Wyatt to be together—well, if “easy” means stolen moments when Ethan’s roommate is away, or sneaking away to a hidden nook in the library. Privacy is hard to come by in a dorm, but finding ways to connect is half the fun.

Emotionally, though, that’s a different story. Wyatt isn’t sure if a relationship is something he can make last—years of having to hide his emotions have left him with a shaky sense of self-confidence. And when it’s time to head home for the holidays, their steamy on-campus connection may not translate so well to the real world…

About the author

K.A. Mitchell

43 books1,111 followers
K.A. Mitchell discovered the magic of writing at an early age when she learned that a carefully crayoned note of apology sent to the kitchen in a toy truck would earn her a reprieve from banishment to her room. Her career as a spin-control artist was cut short when her family moved to a two-story house, and her trucks would not roll safely down the stairs. Around the same time, she decided that Chip and Ken made a much cuter couple than Ken and Barbie and was perplexed when invitations to play Barbie dropped off. She never stopped making stuff up, though, and was surprised to find out that people would pay her to do it. Although the men in her stories usually carry more emotional baggage than even LAX can lose in a year, she guarantees they always find their sexy way to a happy ending.

Awesome!!!! Truly spectacular, the way the author binds us to the emotions of the characters by using some well-placed words. I am so glad I got more of Wyatt's POV. And thank you for changing the font of the text messages. It really used a lot of my brain power to figure out where a text started and where it ended in some cases in book one.

My favourite line:

It made me crack up sooooo freaking hard! I still can't stop laughing after reading it.

And there's going to be a THIRD book? Oh God, kill me now!! I can't wait!!!

First, let me just say that I really loved both Ethan and Wyatt from book 1 and was thrilled to get more of their story.

In the first book, Ethan's eternal positivity was so "glass half-full" that you could feel his hope for what he and Wyatt could have dripping from the pages. It was completely contagious. You have lemons? Great! Ethan's all for making lemonade and I loved him for that.

However, in this continuation, told from Wyatt's point of view, it's just the opposite. Yes, I realize that he's been dealt a fairly shite hand at the table of life, but at a certain point, when the person that you're with has consistently shown you nothing but beauty, loyalty and kindness, you really have to grab it with both hands and hang on.

The entire way through this story, up until the last few pages, the feel of the story was " this is great, but temporary and Ethan is going to dump me, so I shouldn't dare to hope for more ," which felt disheartening and overly emo.

I loved getting more of Ethan and Wyatt, but to be honest, I felt that the focus on Wyatt's hesitation to accept the gift that he'd been given, Ethan's love and boundless optimism, were being squandered here.

The book does end on a hopeful note for their HFN; however, I still felt that their relationship was one built on loose sand, with Wyatt 'wanting' to stay, but not going 'all in' due to his fear of abandonment or betrayal.

I'd rate this one 4 stars for Ethan and 3 stars for Wyatt, so around 3.5 stars overall.

Without a doubt, I will be reading book 3, but I really hope that it has a much more positive vibe than this story and ends with a significantly more solid HFN, if not an actual HEA.

Eh, it was okay.

Ridiculous that this story drags out over 3 books. And there's a huge wait time between books.

It's a little immature.

And Wyatt kind of drives me a bit crazy.

Yet I still seem to want to see where things go between them.

Go figure.

This sequel to Getting Him Back follows Ethan and Wyatt as they navigate their new relationship and begin dealing with bigger picture things, like where to spend the holidays and meeting the family.

I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the first story. Getting Him Back was told through Ethan's perspective, whereas this story was told solely through Wyatt's. Where Ethan was a bit more goofy and fun-loving, Wyatt is a pretty moody, the world sucks ass, kinda guy. His POV was grittier and therefore less enjoyable, but props to the author for creating two very clear and distinct voices for her main characters. I'm still glad as hell we got a glimpse into Wyatt's mind. I love the guy and just want him and Ethan to get their HEA without too much drama.

Again, Ethan and Wyatt burn up the sheets with their sexual explorations. K.A. Mitchell writes some fairly delicious and realistic sex scenes which - for this perv - is the highlight of this particular series.

Ethan and Wyatt's story continues and this time it's told from Wyatt's POV. Oh and I had so many feels for him. Really, this guys needs an HEA. He's alternating between waiting for the other shoe to drop and just wanting Ethan and him to be happy together. That's all I want too. I just adore these guys. This ends HFN but sadly it looks like we have to wait for next spring to get the real HEA!

This was a quick read that picks up on the blossoming romance between Ethan and Wyatt. K.A. Mitchell wrote this story a little different than book one..there wasn't an awful lot of romance it was more of getting in Wyatt's head and figuring him out while Ethan just tried to make him happy.

In this story we get to see the normal strains that are put on a typical college age romance, the lack of privacy, the breaks and being apart, meeting the family, and even coming out to family. Wyatt gets to experience what it's like for his boyfriends parents to not think he is good enough for their son and the two deal with it best they can.

This book ends much like book one with a happy for now feeling and it makes you wonder will these two be able to survive the challenges they face in the upcoming months and plans they are making, can Wyatt ever get over his feelings of being inadequate and will Ethan even learn that he can't hide the truth from people just because it may be easier?

I really hope book 3 is published a lot quicker than book 2 was.. and here is hoping the author can bring home the series with a romantic story for our two main characters.

This is a fun series that I can recommend, you must read the books in order!

I struggled with this, the follow up to Getting Him Back.

In book 1, I really liked both Ethan and Wyatt. Book 1 was told from Ethan's POV and there was something...compelling...about the mysterious bad boy, Wyatt. I was looking forward to book 2 and watch their relationship progress.

Book 2 was told from Wyatt's POV. And I have to say...he was annoying AF. His insecurity bordered selfishness and there were times I agreed with Wyatt's concerns about why Ethan was with him in the first place.

And honestly...there was just too much sex. (whaaaa?) I don't know...it just bugs me when couples use sex to avoid talking. I start to get grouchy.

Ok...one last thing...there's a whole "lying" problem going on with Ethan...and I'm so not ok with this. I hope this is tackled in book 3 in a major "you're wrong!" way!

Book 2 is worth reading solely to get you from book 1 to book 3 (which I hope will bring this series back around!)

In this 2nd installment of Ethan And Wyatt, we're picking up right about where the first book left off.

Except, the entire book is told from Wyatt's POV, and thus his glass-half-empty, this-can't-last-anyway attitude permeates the book.

And thus the tone of the book is much more pessimistic than the first one. Wyatt spends most of the book not really seeing what Ethan is offering him, and certainly not giving Ethan enough credit or believing that what they have can last. Of course, Wyatt's experiences and the shitty life he's led so far do not lend themselves to being eternally hopeful and positive like Ethan, but I got the impression that Wyatt didn't even try.

Not when Ethan shows him every damn day they're together that he's all in, not when Ethan does that special thing and uses his own money to do that special thing for Wyatt, not when Ethan tries so very hard to make Wyatt happy - Wyatt just can't see what's in front of him and he expects it all to crash and burn.

If you go through life expecting the worst, you might just get what you expect. Unless you pull your head out of your, ahem, behind, and start listening to what your boyfriend tells you and maybe, just maybe trust that he means what he says.

This book was obviously darker than the first one, very much so, and that's primarily due to spending the whole time in Wyatt's head. His pessimism is exhausting, to be honest. I wanted to holler at him to just. For. Once. Believe!!

While we do get a promising HFN at the end, mostly due to Ethan's eternal hopefulness and willingness to do whatever it takes, I do hope that the third book, announced at the very end, will show us Wyatt in a better place, a more hopeful place, where he believes that whatever crappy hand he's been dealt isn't the final word on things. That his past doesn't have to define him, and that it's okay to have hope. To live fully, to strive for better, instead of expecting the worst all the time.

I'm not happy with Ethan's mom in this book, for how she acted, and I hope that she will take the time to actually talk to Wyatt, and not let her opinion of him be defined by what she heard from others, who don't have the inclination to portray him in a positive light. I would also think that she ought to trust her own son enough to make the right choices, when he hasn't given her any kind of reason not to.

Ethan makes mistakes, sure. He did in the first book, and he makes some here too, but his mistakes are because he's young and doesn't know the best way to approach subjects yet, and even when he makes a mistake, he's quick to admit it. Everything he does is with Wyatt in mind, and it hurt my heart when Wyatt would question his loyalty, even if it was only in his mind. He's also willing to lay his heart on the line, and tell Wyatt how he feels.

I liked Wyatt's uncle and his girlfriend - I hope they'll feature in the third book as well, because I think that Wyatt needs family who stands by him, so he can learn that some people can be trusted, and that his Waardenburg is just a part of him, and not the whole. Nor should he let it define him.

Looking forward to the next one. 2017?? Gah, that's a long way off.

When we left Ethan and Wyatt at the end of Getting Him Back, Wyatt had moved to a new dorm room away from the asshole who shall not be named and Ethan telling Wyatt he could thank him for the move help by coming home with him over Thanksgiving.

Poor Wyatt. I get why he doesn’t want to do family and have them question everything about his looks, his character and his intentions towards their sunshiny golden boy. Wyatt is having a hard enough time dealing with the constant revolving door of Ethan’s friends that the thought of dealing with the growing number of Ethan’s family over a few days becomes too much for him.

And then we have Ethan. Ethan is still Big-time, stupidly in love with a guy who was always going to need to be convinced that things didn’t have to suck, aka Wyatt. With this installment being told from Wyatt’s POV, we get to know a bit more of why the things are always going to suck.

I loved that they are still this young opposites attract couple who is trying to find their way as boyfriends. Ethan is still trying to not be clingy and while Blake was a total jerk, the sting of being dumped for just that still sticks in his mind. But all Ethan wants to do is show Wyatt how much he loves him and wants to make him happy.

Wyatt wants to be happy but he is still learning how. The boys have family issues to deal with over the holidays that put strain on their relationship but the small moments we get of growth with both boys, in and out of bed, were endearing, sexy and just the sort of romantic you could expect from boys in college.

Now this for me was way too short. I get that we are getting the boys and them over the holiday season and I guess I am just uber selfish because I want more from them than a novella.

So this was short but it was good. I will warn you though, it ends abruptly like the first did and promises the next book in the spring of 2017. Guess I know what I’ll be reading then.

Could he be boyfriend material or was he just fooling himself?

Thinking about breaking up with your new boyfriend, not cool. But Wyatt was shitfaced petrified. Terrified of the newest development, one his boyfriend was pushing: Meeting the dreaded parents. He'd do anything for Ethan. ANYTHING. So why was this time an absolute no?

Told from another view.

Book two of Ethan & Wyatt was the telling of Wyatt's story. And what a story. The guys were defining their relationship, both scared and excited. But as the holidays rolled around, Wyatt found himself pulling away from Ethan. Finding themselves away from each other hinders their new love and has them trying all over again to get it right.

We get to delve how why Wyatt became the person he was today. We met the family hinted at in book one and watch Ethan stand up for his man. Though not as exciting as book 1, it had a good feel to it.

This was pretty emotional and angsty. Wyatt has loads of hangups, which can be hard to navigate, but I thought they read true. I enjoyed the development of the relationship and I cannot wait to read the final book. Mich enjoyed and super hot!

Boyfriend Material picks up where Getting Him Back left off. We're switching POV's and barrel right into Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

We get to see how Wyatt handles being in his first relationship. The ups and downs of first love, college-living and meeting the parents.

It's a nice little installment and if you liked the first book I'm sure you'll have some fun with this one as well. Most of all the sexiness stands out (just lovely!) and how well written it is.

My overall enjoyment of the couple was a bit dampened by Wyatt being Wyatt.

I liked him well enough here but being inside his head was, surprisingly, a little less awesome as I'd hoped it would be. I adored him in the first book, which was told from Ethan's POV only (except for that 4 page Epilogue-thing).

I get that he's insecure and not thrilled about how Ethan handled some things, I really do, but I wished he'd been a little less prickly. Sometimes I felt bad for Ethan, though I get that not every relationship is smooth sailing. Guess they never are! So... yeah.

Ethan, god I adore him still. He's such a wonderful guy!

I'm a bit bummed that the book ends with yet another cliffhanger of sorts and I'll have to wait for another installment. Some books are awesome but don't need to be cut into three parts, in my opinion. It only dampens my overall enjoyment, the whole having to wait and forgetting what had happened in prior installments.

I mean, the story is rather simple and only cut into little pieces, it's not full of suspense or mystery or action. Just a sweet love-story between two college guys. I would have loved it to be just one big book, you know? :)

But hey, it also got me introduced to K.A. Mitchell and I'm going to check out some of her backlist.

Many, many thanks to the publisher who kindly provided a free copy for an honest and impartial review.

This was a harder book to read than the first but I still really liked it because it was about the every day efforts of trying to be together, to learning about each other, to making a relationship work. And it hurt seeing how uncomfortable Wyatt was with the idea of spending holidays with Ethan's family because you just want to give him that HEA. Well, he doesn't trust the idea of HEA and with good reason because OMFG I can't believe Ethan's mom.

(Damn, I'm finding that I might be just a little like Ethan...)

Mega points for highlighting how much Ethan takes the "easier" route (even in his relationship with Blake), and then having him deliberately choose otherwise because he loves Wyatt and is willing to make more of an effort.

(...In which I am, in the end, nothing like Ethan. *sigh*)

I loved Ethan and Wyatt just as much here as I did in the first book. Ethan is still just as bubbly and sometimes clueless and sweet as he was in Getting Him Back and Wyatt is just as broken, and anxious and in love with Ethan. The thing I love so much about New Adult is how much growing characters do, especially when it's in a continuation like in Boyfriend Material. Ethan has been spoiled and sheltered his whole like and it affects the way he sees the world, and especially how he views Wyatt. It was nice to see him begin to stand on his own two feet. And poor Wyatt, he's trying so hard to see the good in a world that hasn't treated him very well so far.

These two are so much fun and I'm looking forward to book 3!

I loved reading more about Ethan and Wyatt.

We met Ethan and Wyatt in Getting Him Back. While that book had an HFN Author K.A. Mitchell has come up with another taste for us in Boyfriend Material. Like the first story, I enjoyed this one a lot. Unlike the first one though, this one felt a bit more like a cliffhanger which I usually don’t like. A third and final book is promised for spring of next. While you could probably read Boyfriend Material as a stand-alone I really think you should read Getting Him Back first. It’s a great book and will give you a lot of background that will enhance your enjoyment of Boyfriend Material.

Getting Him Back was told from Ethan’s point of view (POV) but Boyfriend Material is told from Wyatt’s. Wyatt never really had much to say in Getting Him Back so I thought it was a great choice to have him tell this story. We get a lot more insight into the backgrounds of both characters and I think it helped me to understand them better, especially Wyatt.

Wyatt had it rough growing up and that definitely affects the way he reacts to Ethan’s desire to introduce him to his family. Boyfriend Material pretty much centers on that theme – how Wyatt and Ethan function when they are not at college.

Like book 1, this story was really HOT! The physical chemistry between the two characters is never in doubt. Ethan’s desire to make things easier when Wyatt meets his family backfires, though, and their relationship is jeopardized.

As someone on the far side of 50 I’m still kind of amazed at how much I enjoy reading NA (new adult) stories about college life and personal relationships. Ms. Mitchell does this genre extremely well. While I wish I didn’t have to wait so long for the next and final book in Wyatt and Ethan’s story I can’t wait to read it. I’ll definitely be reading more books by this author.

I suppose at 92 pages, this would be considered a novella, and it definitely read fast. However, it wasn't a problem with Boyfriend Material because this is actually the second book in the Ethan and Wyatt series. You definitely should read that first, because it's a full novel that details the history of how these two came together, as well as important information about their background. Once you get to Boyfriend Material, it was nice to have an established couple that you already knew. It meant the story could explore other aspects of their relationship and Mitchell definitely did that!

The book takes place mostly during the holidays, starting a little bit before Thanksgiving. Ethan wants Wyatt to come to his house for the holiday, but that would mean meeting a lot of Ethan's family. Wyatt is quiet and not used to a lot of attention, so he's not too keen on the idea of being surrounded by a lot of people he doesn't know. Instead, he opts to visit his uncle for the holiday. The short time away just shows that Ethan and Wyatt both really love each other and all seems well...until Christmas approaches and the two have to then figure out what to do over a much longer break.

I enjoyed this one, because I do like when couples are already established but you understand how they came together. We get both because this is a sequel and that's a big deal for me because m/m novels tend to have companion books with a new couple instead of another book with the same couple in the forefront. And guess what? There will be a third too! Despite knowing the couple already, sometimes the physical nature of their relationship felt a bit much because the book was so short. It would have been nice if they had communicated more, though they do comment on the fact that Wyatt has a difficult time with this and Ethan is a fan of taking the easy way. Regardless, it was still a good novella, and I'm curious to see where Mitchell takes the boys next!

I really enjoyed the first book and if anything this one is even better.
This is a really quick read but I loved that we got Wyatt's PoV. Ethan is as adorable as ever, even if he does resemble a steam roller most of the time!
I adore Wyatt's social awkwardness and how he tried so hard to give Ethan the words he needs.
The author has a way of making it all so real and bringing the emotion to life for the reader.
Together, they make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Surprisingly, I missed Ethan and Wyatt and was excited to catch back up with the boys, see how they’ve grown and matured. Unfortunately, not much has changed and Wyatt is still in his shell and Ethan is still trying to show his love without pushing him away. I totally get why Wyatt is the way he is, I totally understand the need for the long bangs, the hoodie, and just all around trying to remain invisible. But…Ethan is his boyfriend, he has proven himself, over and over again in my opinion, and it just irked me that Ethan was constantly left walking on eggshells. Wyatt needed to step up or let go. Fortunately, this is a short story and after many miscues, he finally steps up.

I was not as invested in this book as I was in the first story, Getting Him Back. It almost seemed like this was a long epilogue to the first book and I struggled to stay involved. I know, I know, it’s K.A. Mitchell, one of my all-time favorite authors, but it just wasn’t all that new or different, and I was left a little disappointed. I think I will chalk this series up to it being me, not you, because I’m getting older and the players are getting younger. I’ve come to realize that is not working too well for me anymore. So if new adult, college age, and learning to be an adult in a relationship is something that works for you, then I would recommend this book and regardless I always highly recommend this author.

Overall Impression: I liked it

The Holidays with Ethan & Wyatt

This book switches to Wyatt’s point of view. We get to feel his insecurities and desires. A perfect bridge to the final book in the series. We get some family introductions too. I’m Enjoying this journey. Angst set to medium - so it’s not crushing me. Maybe that’s saved for book three. 3.75 for little pharmacy bags.

I note in my review of the first one that I mentioned that we only get Ethan's pov and Wyatt remains an enigmatic character. Ha! This one gives us Wyatt's voice and is remains un-forthcoming, even in his own head!

He is damaged by his upbringing, mainly with how other people perceive him. He wants to feel secure with Ethan, but he hindered by his own low self esteem issues and his defensiveness.

Who can blame him? Not me. I liked the pull and push between this pair as they try to work out a way to be together. In this book, we spend a lot of time having smexy times. I can't remember how it was with the last one, but here, their physical attraction keeps them together. They really love, and lust for each other. It's pretty steamy!

I found this great. I loved both boys. I will be back for more.

After Ethan's whirlwind narrative, I must admit I found Wyatt a bit boring...
The story just didn't grip me, there was nothing driving it forward except Wyatt's fears that Ethan would maybe dump him.

3.5 Stars. This is the second book in a contemporary New Adult/ Upper YA M/M romance series and likely best enjoyed when read in order.

Ethan and Wyatt are boyfriends on campus. Wyatt is a little older, been there for a couple years. Ethan is a freshman. The first book, which isn't recounted at all, is all about them getting together. This book is all about the challenges of them building a relationship.

Wyatt is a "bad boy" in that he assisted in a large theft, in a stolen vehicle, when he was a young teen. Like 14-15. He was caught, tried, convicted and served 2 years in juvie. He's from a Nowhere West Virginia Small Town where everyone is poor, and has been raised by his mother alone for his whole life. Ethan's an only child from an upper middle class family. He's honest, kind and patient, comfortable in his skin and sexuality, while Wyatt is reserved and mostly ashamed of many aspects of himself and his life. Wyatt has little experience with men, because he wasn't sure he was gay, and didn't want to become a bigger target by revealing his homosexuality. Now, with Ethan, he's willing.

Ethan wants Wyatt to come home with him for Thanksgiving. And Christmas break. And, probably forever, but Wyatt is reticent. He knows/believes that he's not boyfriend material, and doesn't want Ethan's family to reject him.

So, as far as the story goes, it was okay. I was a bit lost on some of the beginning, having not read the first book. As a devout serial reader, it is a pet peeve of mine when there is nothing to orient the reader to certain salient parts of the past in the new book. These are novellas, and a few sentences would go a long way to bringing fresh readers in, without too much repetition of the first book for those who've read that. Especially as this novella is told from Wyatt's POV, and what a big switch that is, apparently, from the first book. Like, I have no idea what Waardenburg syndrome is--and I've got a Really Big Degree that certifies me to teach medical physiology. Wyatt suffers from it, and I barely got even a cursory description of what that meant, or how it affected his life. Heads up: it's a genetic disease and means Wyatt's partially deaf, and he has two different color eyes and brilliant white hair. His uncle has even greater penetrance and is totally deaf. Wyatt's sensitive to his appearance, and how it affects those around him. He doesn't want to be a curiosity, which is why he shies from contact with people, and hides behind a hoodie. All the time.

Ethan's this sunny, "glass is nearly full" loving young man. He recently broke off from a relationship with a boy from his hometown--one who goes to significant lengths to make Wyatt feel uncomfortable--and he wants to crow out his good fortune at finding Wyatt, and getting Wyatt to love him. He is charmingly naive and starry-eyed. I'm glad he loves Wyatt, because Wyatt NEEDS someone to love him. I wish there was a bit more to this book. I know it's a HFN, with a third installment promised, but I wanted there to be a bit more meat. Mostly it's Wyatt worrying about the state of his relationship, and pushing away from Ethan before he can get his heart broken. It seemed a little juvenile, which is why I think it's more Upper YA than New Adult. There's sex on the page, and that was pretty good, but the overall vibe is still kinda young, IMHO. I also struggled with the mostly-telling narrative, and didn't quite bond with Wyatt, as a result. It's a quick read, though, and I might pick up the third book, if I had the time.

This is the second book in the Ethan & Wyatt series and needs to be read in order.

Ethan and Wyatt have decided to give their relationship a try, but while physically everything is going great between them, emotions and all they entail is not something that comes easily for Wyatt. With the holidays getting closer and Ethan wanting Wyatt to visit him at his home, Wyatt’s doubts begin to resurface. Do they have what it takes to make it in the long run?

While I wasn’t too sure about Ethan in the previous book, I liked him a whole lot more in this one. He was determined to make things work with Wyatt and would do anything to make him happy. Yes, he’s still self-absorbed, but he’s so loving, patient and caring with Wyatt that I just couldn’t not love him. Wyatt was still his prickly self, but slowly opening to Ethan and his friends, and it was nice to see him interact with his uncle and his girlfriend, who were pretty awesome and understanding. And of course, I loved seeing Ethan and Wyatt together, even if not everything was alright between them, their chemistry was undeniable.

I didn’t particularly care for Ethan’s mom, although her behavior was understandable up to a certain point, but I loved that the way she acted was the trigger for Ethan and Wyatt to finally resolve some of the issues they’d been dealing with.

I’m looking forward to the next installment and reading the conclusión to this great series!
