At Your Command - Dominion: Applying Scripture As Taught By Neville Goddard

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.' Then God said, 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;...' -Genesis 1:27-28

Francis Bacon says - "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested." This is a kind of book that should be chewed and digested, that is to say, it should be read wholly with diligence and attention. Now I'm in love with neville and looking forward to read more books of him. It feels like the new beautiful journey has begun:)

The last third of the book is literally just a sales letter, or at least the version I read off of scribd. I guess it's a funny bit of irony that literally a few pages after Neville writes to trust no man except for one self in finding solutions to your problems that Vitale offers the 'secret' to solving all your problems and how to manifest a new car for the low payment of just 137 (everyone told him he was crazy out of his fucking mind for not charging 997 for this!! So it must be a good deal!)

Neville Goddard's "At Your Command" resorts to heresy and blasphemy in order to bolster the New Thought movement and the Law of Attraction.

I want to be fair in this review, so let me acknowledge my perspective. I’m a Bible-believing Christian. But, unlike some Christians, I’m also open to learning. I read widely - from different authors with various perspectives, including those who do not share my faith.

In that spirit, I don't have a knee-jerk, disapproving reaction to anything related to the so-called "Law of Attraction." Indeed, I agree with many of the observations and wisdom put forward by those (like Goddard) who were pioneers of “New Thought” and many today who embrace the “Law of Attraction.”

There’s wisdom to be gleaned from Goddard’s work, such as these quotes from “At Your Command”:

"You can only be to others what you are first to yourself.”

“Your opinion of yourself will determine your expression in life.”

“To dissolve a problem that now seems so real to you all that you do is remove your attention from it. In spite of its seeming reality, turn from it in consciousness. Become indifferent and begin to feel yourself to be that which would be the solution of the problem.”

“Life does not care whether you call yourself rich or poor; strong or weak. It will eternally reward you with that which you claim as true of yourself.”

But there’s also some bad, even dangerous, advice such as:

"Your desires contain within themselves the plan of self-expression. So leave all judgments out of the picture and rise in consciousness to the level of your desire and make yourself one with it by claiming it to be so now."

Really? What about those who have a desire to exploit or abuse others?

And then there's the premise itself, namely the author’s audacious undertaking to remake and redefine the Bible to be something that it is not AND to then insist that this is the best (and only legitimate) way to look at the Bible.

Goddard writes: “Instead of looking upon the Bible as the historical record of an ancient civilization or the biography of the unusual life of Jesus, see it as a great psychological drama taking place in the consciousness of man.”

Well...why? Much of the Bible IS a “historical record.” The Bible is actually a collection of books - and those books come in a variety of genres. But some of those books are indeed history books!

Goddard completely redefines the Bible to be about consciousness and manifestation. And he centers it on everyone’s favorite subject: YOU.

He writes: “If you, the reader, will give up all of your former beliefs in a God apart from yourself, and claim God as your awareness of being—as Jesus and the prophets did—you will transform your world with the realization that, ‘I and my father are one.’”

This is breathtaking in its intellectual dishonesty! Goddard takes quotes by biblical prophets — and refashions them as if these people were speaking of themselves and their own consciousness! He also takes Jesus’ quotes and redefines them as Jesus asserting the same kind of divine consciousness that (Goddard says) all of us have — or can have.

He even plays this redefinition game with one of the most reverent and holy identifiers for God in the Scriptures:

“Before man can attempt to transform his world he must first lay the foundation—‘I AM the Lord.’ That is, man’s awareness, his consciousness of being is God. Until this is firmly established so that no suggestion or argument put forward by others can shake it, he will find himself returning to the slavery of his former beliefs.”

To those who take God and the Bible seriously, this statement is nothing short of heresy and blasphemy!

But even if you don’t believe in God or the Bible...

What Goddard is doing is intellectually dishonest. Texts have meaning. The authors who wrote texts, including ancient texts, had goals and intentions when they (the authors) wrote those texts.

Who is Neville Goddard to ignore or redefine the intentions of the biblical authors?

Goddard’s approach represents a radical postmodernist conceit that (if fully imbibed) divorces one from reality.

He even goes so far as to assert that his take on Jesus and the Bible must be accepted without question and that the alternative to his view is “slavery” to one’s former (and fundamentally flawed) beliefs.

In his excellent book “Never Get Angry Again,” psychologist David J. Lieberman writes that “all roads out of reality lead to the land of suffering.”

I commend anyone who wishes to better their life. I don’t want to pour water on that desire. But I encourage you not to divorce yourself from reality and intellectual integrity. That’s too high of a price to pay.

Good examples of how to navigate the law of assumption that I have seen be true in my life. To someone who has never experienced something manifesting magically in their life this book will sound crazy. Any Neville Goddard will sound crazy if they have never experienced that. I think he is confusing a lot of the time. I had to reread a lot. Maybe its because he was writing this in the 1900's or he's just extra.

It is interesting that he uses the Bible to prove and explain manifestation. I enjoy reading different religious takes. Goddard is really interesting because I dont think most Christians would support this despite him using Christianity to prove his point. He believes we are all God and that God is not external but is basically our subconscious that manifests. And that we have the power to create our life once we know this truth.

Thank God for audiobooks—finishing this very short and concise work by Neville was easy thanks to the reading by 'Giving Voice to the Wisdom of the Ages' on YouTube.

At Your Command focuses on one core manifestation of Neville—anything can be achieved easily if you first drop all conditioning by going into the state of 'I Am'. Although Neville's favourite method in most works is the 'state akin to sleep', this book focuses on the 'I Am' method.

This is a very quick and concise book on improving your life by the master of New Thought and Law of Attraction.

"Use your mind, ignorant creature. It has POWER to take you anywhere - to Mars, to Jupiter, nigh, even across the whole universe! You have not been properly taught how to use it, but you must picture whatever you want and you will get it. Yes, I tell thee! Thy mind has supreme power."

Very intriguing for the persuadable, but loses its shine after a week or so.

"You can only be to others what you are first to yourself."

Wonderful book about what Neville calls The Law of Assumption (and what the mainstream calls The Law of Attraction.
This one is his first book and has many bible references in it. He quotes them and then interprets those in a mystical way, rather than in a religious way.

A quick read holding a lot of personal healing for me with its pseudo-“scientific” twist of Bible references. Can imagination be the “god” we have been always looking for in the sky, waiting to descend and make our hopes a reality?

The Game of Life and How to Play It" karya Florence Scovel Shinn.

Mari bahas bukunya :

Kamu anggap diri kamu kaya, benar.

Yakin a.k.a iman a.k.a percaya itu kuncinya.
Ragu? Jangan!
Overthinking? Jangan!
Just live your life... detach.

Pulihkan dulu harga dirinya.

Satu hal, jangan pernah mengutuk keadaan. Itu wajib.

This rising in consciousness is the spiritual marriage where two shall agree upon being one and their likeness or image is established on earth.

“Deny it if you will, it still remains a fact that consciousness is the only reality and things but mirror that which you are in consciousness. So, the heavenly state you are seeking will be found only in consciousness, for the kingdom of heaven is within you. As the will of heaven is ever done on earth you are today living in the heaven that you have established within you. For here on this very earth your heaven reveals itself. The kingdom of heaven really is at hand. NOW is the accepted time. So, create a new heaven, enter into a new state of consciousness and a new earth will appear.

[…]

“I AM the Lord the God, which has brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; thou shalt have no other gods before me.” What a glorious revelation, your awareness now revealed as the Lord thy God! Come, awake from your dream of being imprisoned. Realize that the earth is yours, “and the fullness thereof; the world, and all that dwells therein.” You have become so enmeshed in the belief that you are man that you have forgotten the glorious being that you are. Now with your memory restored DECREE the unseen to appear and it SHALL appear, for all things are compelled to respond to the Voice of God, Your Awareness of Being – the world is AT YOUR COMMAND!”

Always open to any author with a fresh outlook on how to go about living your best life and Goddard, in his time, had his own way of taking on that task. After listening to his whole oeuvre I think the man makes some pretty untenable and ludicrous claims. A clear advocate of 'manifesting' or the law of assumption: "an assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact": wow, just wow and hell no, absolutely no. Goddard actually believes 'God' to be the human imagination; very William Blake-ean, not at all original. He goes on to interpret the bible as a kind of drama, or personifications of the different states of the human mind. Ok, I get that, that's pretty modern but again not really helpful; the identification with the stories is worthwhile enough. What the works of Goddard did bring me was the introduction to the broader 'New Thought' movement, organised in 1914 into the 'International New Thought Alliance'; a coming together of multiple strings of religious and philosphical thought drawing from various ancient sources in 19th century US. From wikipedia: "The contemporary New Thought movement is a loosely allied group of religious denominations, authors, philosophers, and individuals who share a set of beliefs concerning metaphysics, positive thinking, the law of attraction, healing, life force, creative visualization, and personal power." Very instructive to actually meet the long pedigree of current self-help literature.

A short but interesting book on metaphysical principles. In my opinion Neville Goddard was ahead of his time,as quantum physics are now bearing witness to the truth of many of his ideas. Goddard stressed our consciousness and imagination, coupled with emotion and belief as keys to manifesting in life. Quantum physics has proven that our conscious observation of energy affects it's behavior and causes materialization and localization of that energy. Goddard as well as other New Thought proponents taught that conscious action on an energetic field which pervades all of life is responsible for the materialization and creation of events and objects in life. Thoughts are comprised of energy, and energy and matter are interchangeable. It is not given to man to know how it works,God does that, but we know that it does work. I also appreciate a point made by Goddard,as well as other New Thought authors as to how we can be one with God,yet we are not God. Consciousness may produce an idea, the idea is one with the consciousness, yet the consciousness which produced the idea is far greater than the idea itself. Therefore we can say we are one with God,yet God is far greater than we are,his ways are past our knowing. Anyhow a good, short and thought provoking book.

“So can’t you see why the millions of prayers are unanswered? Men pray to a God that does not exist. For instance: To be conscious of being poor and to pray to a God for riches is to be rewarded with that which you are conscious of being—which is poverty. Prayers to be successful must be claiming rather than begging—so if you would pray for riches turn from your picture of poverty by denying the very evidence of your senses and assume the nature of being wealthy.”

“Deny it if you will, it still remains a fact that consciousness is the only reality and things but mirror that which you are in consciousness. So the heavenly state you are seeking will be found only in consciousness, for the kingdom of heaven is within you. As the will of heaven is ever done on earth you are today living in the heaven that you have established within you. For here on this very earth your heaven reveals itself. Finally reading the controversial At Your Command, and honestly… I expected more.

Don’t get me wrong, there was something in this book that really bothered me: the blasphemy. No, I’m not God, man 😂. I genuinely think Goddard went way too far in some of his biblical interpretations.

“Then why give it 5 stars if you think the whole ‘you are God’ idea is nonsense, especially when the book is built around it?”

Fair question. And here’s my answer.
This book encourages something that I believe is one of the strongest weapons a human being can have: being delusional about your own capabilities.

Not in the literal sense of being God, but in truly, deeply believing in yourself, even in an absurd way. When you genuinely believe you can do something, you often end up doing it. I have no doubt about that, because I’ve seen it proven in my own life more than once.

So no, this book isn’t about being God to me.
It’s about conviction.
It’s about faith in yourself.
Be delusional.

Finished the Law of Consciousness and wanted to give this one a try. If you're new to the Law of Assumption and to Goddard's teachings I wouldn't recommend this as the first book to read, perhaps a good 5th or 6th.

In this book, Neville emphasizes biblical imagination over practical reality. The formula, for Neville, is simple: your desire + your awareness of being ("I AM") = reality (the expression of that desire).
Life does not make mistakes. Life does not care about right or wrong, morality was man's doing and undoing. Life does not care about whether or not you are worthy, whether or not you are deserving. Life does not give conditions. Again, these are man's doings and undoing.
Instead, Neville teaches us to accept our desires as they are, remain convicted in our awareness that they have already been fulfilled, and watch everything happen as you command it.

In this book "At Your Command", it seems as if the author is interpreting the Bible in a way that can be understood instead of believing in the mystery. For instance he tells us that Mary was not a woman giving birth in some miraculous way to one called "Jesus". etc It seems as if he's denying history as it relates to the birth of Jesus and his subsequent demise. He's done this in other books as well. I believe that if God can make Heaven and Earth He's also capable of giving His son Jesus a virgin birth . He say's "Look upon yourself as this virgin Mary - being impregnated by yourself through the medium of desire etc. I realize he's using this analogy to help us understand his meaning of consciousness but at this point in the book he's lost credibility in his distortion of the biblical account.

It’s interesting to see the crossover of Christianity into the mystic manifestation sphere where God is viewed as the creative power within you and the Bible is not a literal history but a psychological manual about growing consciousness.
In order to manifest your life, you call upon the “I AM” power within to fulfill your wishes, thus communing with God and setting the creative powers into motion.
Goddard draws on examples from the Bible such as the widow’s mite to explain the importance of living as if you already have abundance, living in a state where it’s possible to give freely of what you have. He posits that if you don’t consider yourself worthy of good things, even if the opportunities surround you, it won’t be given you. But if you live in a state of abundance and gratitude, solutions and opportunities are yours for the taking.
