Managing Psychic Abilities: A Real World Guide for the Highly Sensitive Person

Rate this book
Approximately 20% of the population is sensitive or in some way psychic. Being sensitive or psychic can allow you to understand the world in a way that most people can’t, and to see beyond what others are able to. But for many of you sensitivities are a burden, causing overwhelm or even physical ailments.

Most information about psychic abilities on the market is aspirational, meaning that all of the books out there focused on “opening your third eye” or “becoming psychic” are not meant for the highly sensitive person. You don’t want to become more sensitive, you may in fact be holding on for dear life because you are overwhelmed, panicked, have issues with sleep, body pain, headaches, digestive issues, and constantly shifting emotions. Or you might be mildly sensitive, but still need skills to manage going to work, or want to know more about how to become more functional while still being sensitive in this world. Learn how psychic abilities and sensitivities develop, where you are on the spectrum of these abilities and sensitivities, and most importantly, the basic and intermediate skills and techniques needed to be healthier, more functional, and to feel in control of your sensitivities and psychic abilities, so that you can live in the world more joyfully again.

I wanted so badly to like this book. I didn't get anything helpful out of this, just perhaps the sense that the author was to some extent exorcising her own demons by writing it. There was a lot of emphasis on denouncing aspirational psychics/mediums, and umbrella statements about what you supposedly almost certainly will feel regarding your own abilities. I have been terrified, especially as a little girl, yes, but I have never once hated or wished these aspects of myself gone. And I don't believe I have the license to size up anyone else who reports experiencing phenomena either (I got enough of that from family and "friends," thanks). Also, and most importantly - we all have the option to some degree to develop abilities. And wouldn't that be a marvelous thing? Everyone taking a deep dive into their hearts and psyches? I'll take that over gatekeeping any day.

Don't let the title fool you, this isn't a gimmicky cash grab for the new age crowd. Mary is one of the most underrated spiritual thinkers and teachers currently out there. Although this book isn't for everyone, that's exactly why it's good for the right person.

The book is full of what amount to mental exercises primarily aimed at people who are struggling because they don't know how to regulate the information the world is giving them, what Mary calls highly sensitive people. If that sounds even remotely like you, there's something in here worth reading.

It's a short book with little fluff, which I like. I like authors who respect my time and who understand what their audience is looking for. Although all of Mary's books are quite good, this one is a great place to start if you're arriving at her work overwhelmed.

This book is a soul saver and an awesome good read. Well structured and practical advice, clearly based on life experience, it traverses the fine balancing line between informing and empowering me as reader while avoiding flaky spirituality. For anyone striving to come to terms with ‘sensitivities’ that can’t readily be discussed....it has helped greatly in positioning and defining my path going forward in a most positive and constructive way. A very warm & grateful thank you to the author for sharing her private world with wisdom.

Extremely helpful in understanding the HSP in your life

I was led to this book as I searched for resources to understand and help my HSP/psychic child. It provided a clear understanding of the levels of sensitivity and, most importantly, how a highly sensitive person can "stay sane" when bombarded with so much information from the spirit world. The only thing that prevented me from giving this book 5 stars was that some sections got to be very repetitive, with the author restating points that had already been made clearly in earlier parts of the book.

Infinitely useful tips in this book

As a psychic, it is very difficult to find helpful coping methods and skills. Most books are geared toward people aspiring to be psychic. This book helps people who already are.

Practical book on grounding and spiritual hygiene. However at times it feels lacks information on the origin of many of these practices.
