I read this play after reading an excerpt in my English Literature class, and I have to say that I was completely disappointed. Although I haven't read Seneca's Phaedra, the play on which this was based on, I knew the basic story line, and this adaption is not true it at all. Not only does it change key aspects, it also adds unnecessary vulgarities. An example of this is when Hippolytus is in prison, and a priest comes to visit him before his execution. They go from discussing religion and Hippolytus' disregard for it, to the priest performing oral sex on Hippolytus. There is absolutely no need for this, and it adds nothing to the overall storyline; it seems like the author added it only for the shock factor. In fact, she seems to do this throughout the play, adding unnecessary swearing and vulgar language, for no reason other than to make the readers cringe.
Overall, a very pointless and dissatisfying read, and I would not recommend it.
