I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review and here it is: 4.5 stars.
In this third novel in The McCord Brothers series, we focus on Logan McCord, who is just about to surprise his girlfriend of eight years, Helene, with an engagement ring and a marriage proposal. He's even brought along help, some of his family members who will hold up signs reading, "Will you marry me?" Knowing that Helene will be working late, they sneak into her office, only to find her in a very compromising position with, of all things, a guy in a clown suit. His reaction, go out and drink enough scotch to erase that visual image from memory.
Also tying one on that night is Reese, who sits next to Logan at the bar. She's also tying one on, with tequila, trying to forget that she'd just received notice from her doctor that she had an inoperable brain tumor and only a 2% chance to survive it. She decides that she'd better start checking off items on her bucket list, and one of those items is having one night of sex with a hot cowboy, and Logan definitely fits the bill.
When Logan wakes in the morning, Reese is gone, but he discovers that she'd placed her most prized possession, her grandfather's gold watch, into Logan's pocket. She also gets another surprise, notice that her diagnosis belonged to someone else, and she's healthy as a horse. She wants the watch back, but since neither she nor Logan exchanged their real names, now she has to track him down. Since she never stays in one place for long, trying to run from her con artist parents, and a deadly accident for which she feels responsible, she sets out to locate Logan based on the logo on the truck he was driving. What she doesn't know is that Logan has an identical twin brother, Lucky. She also has no idea that Logan has had a PI searching for her, so that he can return the watch. He's depressed and miserable over this faithless fiance and the breakup of their relationship, although he's still remembering his amazing night with the stranger, who identified herself as Julia child. Imagine his surprise several months later, when he goes out to get a hamburger and finds his quarry working at the grill in his hometown of Spring Hill. Also back in Spring Hill is Helene, and although she wants Logan back, he no longer wants or trusts her. Also entering the picture are Reese's rather loose and funny friend, Jimena, a number of unsavory, blackmailing characters from her past, including her own mother, Vickie, and the entire population of Spring Hill, all of whom are mahor gossip hounds.
My only complaint about the novel is that the title doesn't have anything to do with the story--in this book, Logan, the cowboy, is blameless.
Is this plot complicated enough enough for you? In her usual brilliantly plotted novel, Ms. Fossen makes all of these characters come alive, and she does so with drama, heartbreak, and a sense of the outrageous--by the way, just a warning, after you read this gem of a romance novel, I can promise you that you'll never be able to look at clowns the same way again.
