Much has been written on the topic of guided reading over the last twenty years, but no other leaders in literacy education have championed the topic with such depth and breadth as Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell. In the highly anticipated second edition of Guided Reading, Fountas and Pinnell remind you of guided reading's critical value within a comprehensive literacy system, and the reflective, responsive teaching required to realize its full potential.
Now with Guided Reading, Second Edition, (re)discover the essential elements of guided reading through:
a wider and more comprehensive look at its place within a coherent literacy system a refined and deeper understanding of its complexity an examination of the steps in implementation-from observing and assessing literacy behaviors, to grouping in a thoughtful and dynamic way, to analyzing texts, to teaching the lesson the teaching for systems of strategic actions a rich text base that can support and extend student learning the re-emerging role of shared reading as a way to lead guided and independent reading forward the development of managed independent learning across the grades an in-depth exploration of responsive teaching the role of facilitative language in supporting change over time in students' processing systems the identification of high-priority shifts in learning to focus on at each text level the creation of a learning environment within which literacy and language can flourish. Through guided reading, students learn how to engage in every facet of the reading process and apply their reading power to all literacy contexts.

There are many good things about the second edition of this book. It is jam-packed with wonderful, detailed information to help teachers improve the quality of their guided reading instruction. There are many scripts of teacher-student interactions, samples of anecdotal notes, and suggested agendas for PLCs. It directly addresses guided reading in the middle grades (4-6) and gives lots of attention to the rest of the literacy block (read aloud, shared reading, etc.). The downside is that it is going to be a hard sell. Some teachers are going to see 600+ pages and run the other way. The $54 price tag is also a turn-off and it is technically advanced. Great for teachers who have a masters degree in reading and 10+ years experience, certainly not for novices.
Comprehensive look at guided reading 2.0 informed by two decades of expert opinion, research, and classroom experiences since the 1996 publication of the original guided reading book. More more emphasis on guided reading as responsive teaching (something you use versus do) and new chapters devoted to critical topics like ELL.
Like all F&P books, this is a huge book! I put together a reading schedule and finally made my way through it. It has loads of great info and is certainly well worth the read (of only it had visited!) This would be an excellent book club book for teachers working on improving all aspects of reading as it doesn't just focus on guided reading (despite the name).
meh. I hope that I can apply the use one day. Not nearly a bible for instruction, but more of self promotion for the authors. Positive philosophical learning elements.
Considered the holy grail for guided reading ! This book will help teachers who are new to teaching guided reading or for teachers who need to rethink how they respond to students individual reading needs. The book layout is simple and easy to navigate based on guided reading topics you need to explore more on. One of the most important aspects this book discussed is how to analyze level readers and create plans for students based on the F & P gradient .
