Zack Tolliver, FBI, rushes home to Tuba City, Arizona after he learns his friend Eagle Feather was attacked by a mountain lion and the Navajo guide's client is seriously injured. Zack knows the only cure for his friend's guilt is to hunt the cat down. But he quickly learns this is no ordinary animal, and it will be no ordinary hunt.
I have to admit when I first started to read the book, I thought this will be dumb and boring. By the time I turned the FIRST page I knew I was wrong! Man, had me sitting day and night to read this book, and that is very unlike me! Nothing gory. Not thing ugly. Just suspense and mystery. You won’t regret reading this book.

CAT is Book 4 from the Zack Tolliver, FBI mystery-murder series by R. Lawson Gamble. When Eagle Feather, an Indian scout, is injured while tracking an inimitable mountain lion, federal agent Zack Tolliver takes an interest in the hunt for the animal. Eagle Feather is convinced a skin walker, who takes the shape of other animals, is involved. Zack does not believe in ancient folklore and tradition, but becomes worried when this elusive creature watches his home.
As their investigation progresses, an Indian Seer who could help their case is murdered, and the evidence Zack gathers baffles him even more. Eagle Feather is more determined to catch the lion and heads into the canyon to find it. He soon realises that he is no longer the hunter but the prey when he encounters the giant beast.
CAT is a lovely, fast-paced mystery that will hold readers' attention. The stirring legend of the skin walker fascinated me. The Native Indian dialect, the characters’ reactions to the superstitions, and the ancient dwelling caves of their ancestors were also interesting. Although Zack Tolliver is the primary protagonist, the story had very impressive characters like the fearless Eagle Feather who makes witty remarks.
It is a well-developed story and R. Lawson Gamble's writing style makes every scene and setting visible to readers. The cover illustration is ideally suited for the theme. CAT, Book 4 from the Zack Tolliver FBI mystery series is the first book I have read from this author and I intend to read more from this series.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I hadn’t read the first three, so Zack Tolliver was new to me. I found it to be culturally and geographically interesting, well written (thank God), had sympathetic characters, and a surprise ending. I personally would have liked a little more info how the killer managed to do all that it did. The great reveal seemed all tied up rather quickly, Still, I am going to have to investigate if book 5 continues the character’s’ storylines, because now I am invested.
This author has an uncanny ability to draw me in to his story and this locale. I almost felt that I could taste the dust in the air and smell the delicate scents on the wind. I've never read any other books in this series, so I appreciated that I met characters Libby, Zack and Eagle Feather in the very beginning. Later on, I met Jimmy too. A series of murders of livestock and missing pets, both on and off the reservation, have drawn in the characters to discover what is happening. Then the murders begin. The tension built, and it did not build slowly. I found myself reading feverishly, on fire to find out what would happen next. This is not easy to do, as I read a lot. The finale of all the action was appropriate and took my breath away. The aftermath was not as satisfying but it paves the way for future books. I enjoyed reading this book; I enjoyed the way the author conveyed his characters and his story. I shall read more of this author's work.
Zack was a white man who was a lawman. His friend Eagle Feather was a Navajo Indian who often helped Zack on cases. Zack was married to Libby and they had a young son. Libby eventually got tired of Zack hardly ever being home .One day Zack had mentioned seeing a weird strange lion so him and Eagle Feather go on a search for it. In the meantime Libby thinks she sees a lions face a her window. Zack was away again. Later she hears scratching on the door. She calls the police and they come out but the lion was gone. Was it real or a skinwalker or a spirit.Zack spent days tracking the lion down and into some cave. Will they find the lion and shoot him or was he a new skinwalker after him.
Cat, Zack Tolliver FB1, book #4 By R Lawson Gamble.
I will admit having a hard time get into this book. However, once I did, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Gamble gives the reader relatable characters, multiple story lines, a great plot full of twists and turns, plenty of action, well researched Navajo lore, good proofing and editing (I think I did find 3 or 4 errors), and a satisfyinying conclusion.
I had not read the first 3 books in this series, and was still able to jump into the lives of the characters easily.
Found on one of my favorite free book sites, this was a wonderful story, great characters, great ending! This is the second book Ive read in this story, unfortunately I started off with book # 8 the other day. I then wondered what else was in the series, and when I checked the book list, its said "you own three books from this series".. say WHAT? Id better keep a closer eye on my TBR (to be read) list. This writer is really good, reminiscent of Tony Hillerman.
This could have been an easy five star review, as the story really held my interest and kept me guessing. I loved learning about the Navajo/Hopi beliefs and traditions and the difference between how they think, versus the way the FBI handles things. The characters really came to life for me. However, there were several editing errors that should have been fixed before the book was released. This was my first book by this author, and I will definitely be reading more of his books.
Very much in the style of a well-known Navajo / Arizona crime-writer. Several editing errors - some paragraphs lost entire sentences. Excellent story that held my interest despite the errors. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of logical FBI thinking and Navajo beliefs. I will look for more by this author.
Thus was a story that I had to read nonstop to the finish. It dances along the skinwalker mysticism very well, and uses some misdirection to keep you away from the actual killer to near the end,. Mostly it's a story that you can't put down once you're a couple of chapters in.
By now I know the characters and their personalities, and I really like these characters. Zack is in a tight place; family or career. Both are really important, REALLY IMPORTANT!!! This author knows how to tell a story that keeps you up at night and it’s impossible to put the book down. I love this series!!!
Some of us have a difficult time going beyond the black and white facts of proven science as a reality . . . but through the exposure of so much more knowledge today, and with creative writers like Gamble, the grey possibilities of unproven super natural superstitions become more believable!
Want more can I say, the book had me hooked from the very beginning. Recommend to anyone who loves suspense, supernatural, fiction and a good clean read. Recommend you read all the FBI series starting with book 1. tammymcinally@yahoo.com
Zack and Eagle Feather hunt a giant mountain lion that seems to take on other forms at will. The suspense builds through the story as people begin to vanish or die. The ending leaves a lot of questions for the reader to ponder.
An exciting tale well told! With a clever group of assistants, the FBI agent has trouble believing his eyes in this Navajo&Hopi story of ancient traditions conflicting with modern times. I'll look for other books in this series.
Whether You believe in Native American tales or not. Cat can make You a believer. If I weren't already a believer and Native American, R Lawson Gamble's story might accomplish that feat.
This series is sooo good! Zack, Eagle Feather and Navajo police chief Jimmy Chaperell are investigating several disturbing animal maulings. As they get to work, they can’t help but wonder if this could be the work of a skinwalker.
Mixing FBI with Indian and paranormal happenings makes for a very engaging book. This time there is a supposed skin walker near Tuba City, threatening not only mules but Zack’s family. Well written. A page turner.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found myself totally engaged in the storyline and the characters. I plan to read more of this author's work in the future.
At first one can't help but compare to a Hillerman story, but there are enough differences to acknowledge that it stands on its own, well worth a read.
