Rate this book

I've decided to read this after my grandma brought it back from Ukraine for my mom (I always steal book suggestions from my mom). Olga Kobylanska was a 19th century Ukrainian author, a staunch supporter of the first "Women's Movement" in Ukraine. She loved nature, especially the mountains, and the culture and way of life of the Hutsul people. One of her nicknames was "Sharitka" (which is the Hutsul word for edelweiss). This is a biographical novel of her trials in daily life, love, writing, and trying to be herself in the rigidly traditional Austro-Hungarian atmosphere of her time. I confess I loved the writing style - very evocative and imaginative, just like Kobylanska's own prose. True, the characters and come in and out of her life like kaleidoscope patterns, but Valeria Vrublevska was able to organize it all beautifully. She even incorporated some of the dialogue from Kobylanska's novellas to give life to the protagonist.

It became one of my favorite biographies, simply because it's so intricate and eloquent. And not just because I hardcore related to all of Olga's unrequited loves ;)))
