She's good for the environment ... and she's disgusting!
Distinctive trait: Warts Food preference: Bugs and worms Special talent: Eating her own skin Disgusting? Yes, but fun, too!
The Toad is the next installment of the Disgusting Critter series. Hilarious illustrated non-fiction about toads perfect for beginning readers. Humorous text and funny illustrations will leave young readers croaking for more.
The toad is part of the Disgusting critters Series. It is a non-fiction picture book about all you want to know about toads: how are they related to frogs, where they live and what they eat, the different kind of toads that exist, what are those bumps in their skin, tadpoles, and more. It also brings to the reader attention the fact that toads are useful for we human since they eat pests, and the fact that pollution is putting their existence at risk.
This is the first book in the series we have read, and we really enjoyed it. It is not easy to find non-fiction picture books addressed to this age range, which are not boring or too difficult. In this case the text is accessible, with clear and concise facts shown in a funny way. The illustrations are a great accompaniment without distracting the attention from the text.

Children’s books come in two flavors: ones that even adults can appreciate and ones that tickle kids but cause adults to roll their eyes. This Spanish translation of Elise Gravel’s The Toad will probably enchant little boys and girls who love bugs, slimy things, mudpies and fart jokes. Sure, there’s a bit of scientific information here about toads, but most adults will find it just OK. Based on the appeal to the target audience, however, I’m giving it five stars.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and NubeOcho in exchange for an honest review.
What a delightful way to teach early science concepts. Apparently this is part of a series of "disgusting creatures". It is just the right amount of humor mixed in with real facts that let the child reading understand toads. Each fact is followed by a cute joke, except the one about how toads are dying off because of pollution and other factors. The toad, who has been making the funny comments says "This information is sad, so I won't make a joke here."
High recommend this to kids, librarians, school teachers, and parents as an easy and fun way to learn about toads.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing this book for an honest review.
I am a huge fan of the disgusting critters books and this is another great addition to the series. This book is filled with facts, some hilarious about toads. Along with the facts, there is some conservation information as well. As usual, I love the pictures and the conversation bubbles from the toad. This is a comical book that most children will love!
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange f0r an honest review.
This is a really cute and educational book on, what else, toads! I had a blast reading this with my daughter. At first it tells you all about different types of toads like one that grows a mustache of spikes! My daughter thought that was pretty cool. She even drew picture of it after we read the book. Then it goes into more detail about the common toad- what it eats, where it lives, etc. The information was presented in a very easy to understand way and it made it really fun to learn about because the illustrations were funny and made my daughter laugh.
Speaking of the illustrations, I loved the bright colors of the book. The bright pink was the perfect color to get my daughter to want to read a book about a topic that she usually would have called a boy book. The drawings of the toads were pretty cute, for example the book tells you that toads shed and then eat their skin and the illustration shows the toad with ketchup and plate and silverware in front of them, which made my daughter giggle.
Also addressed towards the end is why we needs toads and how we need to keep the Earth a clean place so toads can live here and not get sick. It was good lesson on taking care of the environment without being preachy or hogging the topic of the book.
I would read more books in The Disgusting Critter Series with my daughter. We both really enjoyed this and it was fun to have her draw what she learned afterwards. I think if I read any other ones from this series I will find some extra activities to go along with the book to make it extra fun but even without those this book was a very entertaining and educational read.
The Toad is an informational picturebook by Elise Gravel. It is scheduled for release on July 5 2016. She's good for the environment but many people think that she is disgusting! Distinctive traits include warts, food preferences and bugs and worms, a special talent is eating her own skin! She might be disgusting but fun, too!
The Toad is a great informational picturebook for beginning readers. the pictures are simple but still very fun. The facts are equal parts fascinating and gross. while I am not the squeamish sort when it comes to creepy crawlies or the possibly slimy of the great outdoors, I think this read could make some readers more interested in finding and observing a variety of creatures rather than avoiding or killing them. A win-win all around.
The Toad is part of the Disgusting Critter series. A previous book, The Spider, was a winner too and I expect nothing less from the series or author. The combination of humor and fact can raise interest and lower the fear factor for creatures that might otherwise make kids and adults alike a little squeamish.
This book is part of the Disgusting Critters series. It is a series of facts about toads told in a cute humorous way with somewhat silly illustrations. I never knew that toads are actually frogs. I knew they were both amphibians. They also stress that toads are good for the environment and only live where it is healthy. A great little science book for young children. This would be a good addition to a school library.

The Toad is an amusing yet informative picture book about toads and is part of the Disgusting Critters Series. High contrast illustrations paired with interesting font choices draw the reader in as they learn and chuckle about toads.
What do toads eat? How do they breathe? Can they grow moustaches? All of that and more is answered in The Toad.

Kids may well like this overview of toads with cartoony drawings. Humorous with some cursory facts. Thought the extremely stylized art was detrimental to the message in places.
As a judge for the CYBILS award, I received a copy of this book for free in return for honest evaluation.
So fun! A really brief overview, but this is definitely the best one in the "Disgusting Critters" series I've seen thus far. The illustrations and asides are very cute.
The Toad is a cute but informational book on none other than toads! Elise Gravel gives background on South American ancestors of frogs and toads then leads into background information on toads. She talks about what they eat, how they lay eggs, warts, how they grow from babies to adults, and more. The main toad in the book is a girl and is quirky. There are little text bubbles used where she comments on the information given on the opposite page.
Overall I really liked this book. I enjoyed the color scheme of greens and pinks. Most of the colors in the book were cool and earth-toned which represents water, nature, and plant-life which I find fit well with the theme of toads. This book was informative yet also fun, which makes it perfect for a children's book. All of the toads had spunky personalities and I like reading their thought bubbles to get a taste of what their character was like. This book used two-page and one-page spreads for illustrations. I liked how the illustrator changed it up and didn't stick to text on one side and pictures on the other. On one of the pages it showed a bathroom and the tiles spanned both pages with the toad in the toilet to humorously let children know that toads need to have regular access to water. There was texture shown throughout this book in the form of small sideways u's that represented the toads' warts. This book falls under the informational category and I find that it did a great job in teaching interesting facts about toads while also giving a call to action as some species of toads have gone extinct.
The Toad is another book in the "Disgusting Critter" series that aims to educate young children on animals that many find "gross" or "scary." I have previously reviewed other selections such as The Slug and The Rat, and felt that other than The Rat, these books serve to recognize the values in these animals and make them less stigmatized. The Toad accomplishes the same with really funny illustrations about how there are different variety of frogs, how they grow, etc. I was unable to review the book at the time I got my NetGalley copy so I needed a refresher, so I watched a "Read Along" video on YouTube and the reader did different funny voices and sound effects for the pictures which really made the story pop. As always, this series has attractive illustrations and fonts that keep the reader engaged and make the topic more interesting to learn about.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
This book is one of the greatest way for toddlers to learn about toads. I think it is really detailed with colors and not too realistic drawing will help little ones to learn something new about some thing that exist in our creature about our nature. There was also some Spanish words on the book and I thought it will be fun to see some different language as well. But for me I think it will be nicer if they have translation under those Spanish words. Because even tho I know these words on Spanish one it is not a book for learning Spanish and it os book about toad, I think it will be more enjoyable to learn language at the same time as well. The drawing is really simple and cute. I really like that this book ha some colors or impact on the part where has numbers on or some more nice details.
Goodreads needs a box you can check for "read a million times because this is a picture book and my kids are obsessed with it." This whole Disgusting Critters series is great - I love the way Gravel mixes interesting facts with super corny jokes - but I want to give this one extra credit because when I found long strings of eggs in the pond near our house, I knew immediately that they were toad eggs. Later I realized that was because of this book! I hope she continues the series with more disgusting critters, or even non-disgusting critters.
Hurrah! I love these Disgusting Critters books so much. Each is a joy to read and learn some interesting facts from. Highly recommended if you are looking for a fun, engaging early reader book, enjoy reading about living things that are usually considered "icky", or just need very accessible way to engage a younger audience using STEAM concepts.
This picture book provides a humorous introduction to the amphibian toad, which is a type of frog.
This book provides a basic introduction to the toad, accompanied by zany cartoon illustrations in a quasi-graphic novel format. It describes the toad’s physical characteristics, where it lives, what it eats, its life cycle, its role in the ecosystem, and threats to toads.
I love the entire series. What a great way to bridge the gap between humor and non-fiction. These books will snag your readers with the comical, vibrant illustrations and hilarious jokes. I highly recommend them to any non-fiction fans or reluctant readers.
Stumbled upon this charming nonfiction book, and really enjoyed it! A toad explains about its family, the lifecycle of toads, different kinds of toad throughout the world, and unique things toads do (like eat their own shed skin! Ick!). Lots of personality, silly speech bubbles, etc.
We loved this book. This was a fun non-fiction book about toads. This mom even learned some fun facts. I’m not to keen about the babies coming out of the back of a certain toad but it was really interesting 🧐
The Mushroom Club was such a hit we decided to get all the other books by this author that our library had and they are just as excellent. We learn interesting things, the humourous asides are fun and Kait loves the illustration style and wants to try to imitate it.
Will appeal to emerging readers and beginning readers with goofy illustrations and funny text. Accessible non fiction series delivers basic facts. This one has a touch of environmentalism mentioning toads are harmed by pollution.
