Full disclosure: I know, and am friends with, the author.

Likes: The pacing was even and quick; I never felt like the plot dragged, or moved along too quickly. I liked both Lizbeth and Alan, our protagonists, and their scenes together are sweet without being sappy. I especially liked that I didn't feel like anything was melodramatic; I don't read a lot of romance for that reason, but here, both of our protagonists handle their hurdles like adults (for the most part), and both characters also grew and learned things about themselves as individuals. I enjoyed following Lizbeth's journey and watching her fight for autonomy, and that she has a life and goals outside of her budding relationship.

Dislikes: There isn't anything that I necessarily disliked, but as I am not part of the target audience, maybe my expectations were off. Some plot points and tropes were predictable; however, the author did not dwell or draw-out those moments, which I appreciated, and I do like the way she added a slight twist to some. I also expected to see more of a struggle between Lizbeth and her family, and while Lizbeth and Alan are definitely sweet together, I also wanted to see them develop more. This story would have benefited from having a higher word-count to allow room for more relationship development.

Overall: If you like romance, then you will like this. It's a quick read and a good debut, and I definitely look forward to seeing even stronger writing from Shoemaker in the future.

Young Lizbeth Vincent grew up privileged thanks to her ruthless, business tycoon father. She is finally trying to break free of his iron grip over her life and follow her dream -- to help people like her dead mother did. After a car accident allows her to get community service work at a shelter, she gets to test her mettle to see if she truly can stand on her own two feet or if she'll fall in line with her father's plans.

Alan Wheeler has one dream -- keep the homeless shelter his mother founded going so he can help people. But money is seriously tight and a business tycoon is trying to buy the location out from under him to put up another big building. He has no time for or thoughts of love, until a pretty young woman with a good heart is assigned community service at his shelter. The past and the future tangle in a dance where the outcome will change his entire life forever.

This sweet story is well written and evenly paced. I like the main characters and almost felt like I knew them. I read this story in one day, unable to put it down. The story explores the murky gray zones of familial duty, love, faith in others, and sacrifice. This feel-good sweet gem of a story would make a good Hallmark Christmas movie.

Ms. Shoemaker's debut novel is excellent. I look forward to reading more from her.

Sweet romance

The characters were okay, but I really didn't like the storyline. It bothered me that her mistakes were glossed over and weren't an issue. They still offered her alcoholic drinks. What?!? Instead the big issue was her dad not wanting to do good and let her do what she wanted to. Blech! I would have liked an ending or epilogue. Otherwise a great story.

I have to admit, there are many books I have read and fell in love with. But this book made be feel as if I was right there with Lizbeth and Alan.

The struggles of trying to find a way to keep the shelter open and out of the hands of Johnathan is real. Will Alan be able to find a way to keep the shelter from being closed? You must read to find out.

Good story line but was getting frustrated with all the missing words, words in the wrong order, and spelling errors. Sometimes I had to keep rereading sentences to try to make sense of it. Not sure if it's the version of the book I received through Amazon Kindle, or what, but it got very frustrating.
