Emily Grey is a young woman ahead of her time. She prefers breeches to dresses, and spends her time riding horses, fishing, and climbing trees.

When Emily is fourteen, she meets Cameron, the Duke of Templeton’s grandson. Their friendship deepens over the years, until Cameron is called to fight against Napoleon. They express their devotion to each other and make love for the first time before Cameron heads off to war.

When Emily’s father discovers she’s pregnant, he’s livid. He had no idea his tomboy daughter has fallen in love, and her predicament threatens to destroy their family’s honor. He sends Emily to live with Cameron's eccentric great aunt, and, to avoid shame, insists that she claims she is married.

Upon return from the battlefield, Cameron hears that Emily has wed and was pregnant. She writes him to explain the situation, but the letters never arrive, and the misunderstanding sends Cameron into a spiral of rage and despair. Their paths will cross again, but will their love be enough to overcome the fates at work to keep them apart?

This is a very hard review to write

This book made me mad, made me cry and it made me frustrated. It had way too many things going on and it just got old. Yes he thought she was married and he was mad and he got engaged and he was pretty cruel to the h. I hate the big misunderstanding trope and this one took it to the nth degree. I kept saying 'enough already' and I just got tired of it. I also felt like the a author had a certain amount of words she needed and she just stretched it on and on. The writing seemed to go downhill towards the end but I still finished it. I liked it but did not love it. There was opium addiction, jealousy, alcohol addiction, PTSD, a child born out of wedlock, another woman, another man, hired killers, and it just got too much. Pick one or two but squeezing all these tropes in was just irritating to this reader. I would read the author again but hopefully she will get the 'less is more' message.

This is a book I have been meaning to read for quite some time. I am so happy I finally got around to it because it was OUTSTANDING!

I love Barb A. Hart's writing. Such poignancy and emotion that I was mesmerized by the love story between two wonderful characters.

I LOVED IT!

This was a love story set in England in 1812 between a tomboyish girl Emily and her long time friend turned lover Cameron who goes away to war. When Cameron comes back from the war, he finds things are very changed with Emily since he left.

Sometimes the story line didn't seem very believable. He didn't write to her while he was away? Why wouldn't there have been more communication from others about Emily to Cameron? Why didn't his grandfather or aunt ever speak to him about her after his return?

I found the author's writing style lacking in descriptiveness and depth - it was very short and blunt. There were hardly any character facial/body expressions described, insights into characters thoughts, nor scenery laid out. "It was the night of the ball. Everyone was going. Mrs. Warren and Phillip had promised to play with Johnny in the parlor. Sarah was all excited." Needs. More. Please.

Story is good. But too bare to the bones. Would have liked the narrative more fleshed out, more in depth account revealing how characters felt, thought...ticked, rather than just so and so did this, this happened, then this happened. It ultimately left it up to me to figure out the implications of the psychological undercurrents of emotions brought on by the complexities of the situation. I wanted to get to know the characters better, get to know how conflicted they were by their inner turmoils, how they worked things out, particularly the main characters. Some secondary characters seemed likeable enough and stood out as having great potential for augmenting richness the narrative. Examples might be the main character's butler and housekeeper who seemed to offer up opinions amongst themselves about the irrational behaviour of the Duke in question, plus providing the readers with a bit of humour. All in all, the book is a bit too tidy and predictable.

Wonderful story, engaging characters (even if I was annoyed with them for at least 1/2 the book) and a captivating writing style. While there were parts of this that didn't feel particularly historically accurate, I really enjoyed the book. I was hooked from the first page and enjoyed it to the last page. I did find the final few chapters to be a bit random - honestly didn't feel necessary to the plot, but still enjoyable.
Definitely worth reading.

While I found this book entertaining and intriguing, there was a frustrating element that drove me crazy. Cameron was just too stupid. He never checked up on anything, just went on one person's hearsay about Emily. OK, maybe a misunderstanding at first would have been plausible, but it went on way too long! I was so annoyed with him that I felt he didn't deserve Emily. Other aspects of the book were enjoyable and I actually liked the novel overall.

Glad I Waited

Another excellent book by Barb A. Hart. I absolutely adore the two main characters Emily and Cameron. The main story is about their relationship after the war with Napoleon. Perfect reading for a lazy summer day. Now I'm off to find another of her books to read. Cheerio.

Wonderful story

What sadness and loneliness parts of this story has. Of course, there is happiness and intrigue and lots of family. An excellent book.
