Before All Memory Is Lost: Women's Voices from the Holocaust

Rate this book
In this first Azrieli Foundation anthology, twenty-five women reflect on their experiences of survival—from the heart-stopping fears of hiding to the extreme risks of "passing" as non-Jews, and from the terrors of the Nazi camps to the treacheries of the Soviet Union. This powerful collection, woven together by the common thread of resistance, features a wide variety of narrative styles, including prose, poetry and diary excerpts.

This book profoundly deepened my understanding of the lived experience of the Holocaust for the women who experienced first hand this unthinkable period in history. It has changed my perspective on so much around me and in ways that I am still working through. This is a book that I recommend to anyone and everyone because it has universal significance and, I believe, will connect each reader with their own humanity and vulnerability while reinforcing our need to look out for one another, to make kindness and love the operating force in the world and to be vigilant and vociferous against intolerance in its many forms.

This is not an easy read in that the stories are horrific. It is beyond understanding how people can live through the horrors described, and then go on with living afterward. Many of these women were the only surviving members of their previously large families. Thank you to each of them for telling their stories. They are examples of courage and resiliency.
