“Snack Run” is a delightful short (12 minutes) story that manages to bring comical whimsey and a sweet relationship into a post-apocalyptic world of dying zombies and yet-to-arrive space aliens.
Society and our MCs are brutal enough that I initially wondered whether this was, perhaps, a new version of “A Clockwork Orange”. But no, “Snack Run” is not that dark. Our roommates and future more-than-friends are making the best of a bad situation, and keeping a sense of humor and love in their lives.
The audiobook is priced a bit high ($2.77 to members) for only 12 minutes, but I picked this up during the recent Audible sale offering an additional 30% off, so that brought it under $2. Still, that’s $10/hour - $10 is the price of a an Audible credit, which buys books that are many hours long. Authors don’t control pricing on Audible, and I think this is the lowest price for a book other than the now very infrequent (and much missed) $1.99 add-on price that used to be more common when buying a book on Kindle at the same time as buying the audiobook. “Snack Run” is another of the very few books that Erik makes available on KU; you can save a couple bucks, but the narrator is Hollie Jackson, which made it easy to choose between the KU book and the audiobook!!
4.5* for “Snack Run”. Rounded up because it’s so short I plan to listen to it over-and-over again to pad my 2019 Reading Challenge instead of resorting to a plethora of pwp KU and audiobooks to complete my challenge as I did at the end of 2018! Bwahahahaha!
No, seriously, I enjoyed the pwp too much to skip more of those titles in 2019. “Snack Run” deserves the 5* on its own for the entertainment it provided!
I'd like to see this expanded on as a series. This is the first, and to my knowledge, the only zombie apocalypse story to utilize the alien invasion as the reason for the outbreak angle. Also, the short "shelf life" of the undead is an interesting angle, as well.
There are a few grammatical errors, like dialogue that clearly ends with quotation marks, though the following descriptive text also has closed quotation marks around it. A minor quibble, to be sure, and not one that overly detracts from the story.
Mr. Schubach, please turn this into a full length novel and a series. I would love to read more.
I don’t particularly like zombie stories, but this was really about the two women and I thought this was the start of what could have been an interesting story. In fact as a very very short story it was a waste of two interesting characters.
Oh my goooood....I want more of this book. Erik...pleeeeaaasssee do a stand alone book!!!...!!!
This is a great take 2 years post zombie apocalypse. Not a real romance, just going out to get some food. About a 10 min read. Two thumbs up, and the bottle of orange soda.
A semi-romantic yarn about two smart women just living the best life they can without endangering themselves or others needlessly. For a zombie apocalypse story, this has a lot of heart and smart characters. A good, fun light zombie read.
Entirely too short. Another short story that has potential to be a longer adventure. In just 12 minutes you are introduced to two fun characters that would make great stars of a grand sweeping adventure that involved the quest to make a home in a post apocalyptic world.
