Nessa Donati used to be a happily married mother with a successful music blog and satellite radio show. But that was before her husband John relapsed on drugs and went missing. That was before he was presumed dead. And before she was framed for his murder.
When a commenter on Nessa’s blog starts harassing her online, Nessa shrugs it off. Trolls are a part of internet life. But eventually the troll begins threatening her safety and releasing personal details . . . details only her husband would know.
As Nessa’s life is dismantled piece by piece, her only option is to find John and put a stop to the lies. But when their son becomes a pawn in his twisted game, she must face a disturbing truth: Maybe John isn’t tormenting her, after all. But if he’s not . . . who is? And how far will this monster go to exact revenge?
LS Hawker grew up in suburban Denver, indulging her worrisome obsession with true-crime books, and writing stories about anthropomorphic fruit and juvenile delinquents. She wrote her first novel at 14.
Armed with a B.S. in journalism from the University of Kansas, she had a radio show called “People Are So Stupid,” edited a trade magazine, and worked as a traveling Kmart portrait photographer, but never lost her passion for fiction writing.
Her debut thriller, THE DROWNING GAME, was a finalist in the 2016 ITW Thriller Awards in the Best First Novel category.
She’s got a hilarious, supportive husband, two brilliant daughters, and a massive music collection. She lives in Colorado but considers Kansas her spiritual homeland. Visit her website at LSHawker.com.
Blutige Auseinandersetzungen sucht man eher vergeblich.
Between the cover and title for Body and Bone by L S Hawker, I don’t know which drew me in more. I love a mystery thriller and Nessa’s story supplied me with a steady supply of suspense.
Nessa’s mother haunts her every move and even worse, she married a man just like her…gimme, gimme gimme, mine mine mine. Usually a daughter marries a man like her father and I liked this nice little twist that L S Hawker supplied. But…wait…there’s more and you won’t believe where she takes the storyline.
Nessa is a strong woman, determined to manage her life on her own. She has secrets…many secrets…and she protects them by building a wall that no one can climb. No one, until Isabeau, her son’s nanny. I love this woman and she quickly becomes my favorite character. If you have a troll stalking you on the internet, she’s your gal.
But…L S Hawker made me question her motives. Could she be the troll that is stalking Nessa’s every move and trying to set her up for murder? Could the stalker be her crack addicted husband she kicked out and refuses to stay gone thinking she owes him everything she has? Could the stalker be the rapist from her past that was just released from prison? Well…I was kept guessing and I love that. I think you will too.
All the characters are richly developed with personalities that shine through, whether good or bad. Some you will love, some you will hate, but you will not forget them.
Nessa’s life is more than difficult, it is tragic. Bad choices left her with nightmares that follow her, dogging her every move. They have her looking over her shoulder, waiting for the hammer to drop. Imagiine that every noise, every knock on the door, every question asked is the one that will bring your world crashing down around you. How a person could even function at such a high level of leaves me wondering when the dam will break.
Body and Bone is a fantastic suspense thriller that has all the elements for excellent reading. L S Hawker’s writing is fast paced and jam packed with action at every turn. The twists and turns keep the mystery alive and I dare you to anticipate the ending. It blew my mind, again and again. Evil does walk among us and the worst kind of evil is the human kind. I must warn you though, once you start reading you won’t want to put it down, so plan accordingly. L S Hawker is an author I will be placing on my MUST READ list.
I received a copy of Body and Bone by L S Hawker in return for an honest review.
In Body And Bone, author L.S. Hawker weaves a chilling psychological thriller that follows the harrowing tale of cyber-stalking and bullying that turns successful music blogger and satellite radio show host Nessa Donati's life upside down.
Body And Bone is a riveting and intense story that is full of intrigue, action, drama, suspense, addictions, murder, and dark secrets. The author takes the reader on one hell of an emotional roller coaster ride as Nessa races against time to find out the identity of the dangerous cyber-stalker. As the reader follows the unraveling of Nessa's tumultuous life, the multitude of suspenseful plot twists and turns and growing list of suspects will keep them captivated and sitting on the edge of their seats, while making sure that they hold their breath as they turn the pages, and easily keeps them guessing what will happen next until the surprising conclusion.
This gritty dark tale deals with serious realistic issues of addiction, rape, dysfunctional family issues, personal demons and secrets, murder, and cyber crime. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I enjoyed the 1970-1990s musical references that are interspersed throughout the book.
Body And Bone is riveting psychological thriller that you won't be able to put down, and it will leave you wanting more!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by Partners In Crime Virtual Book Tours.
I like suspense novels - and thrillers - and mysteries. But this book tried to stuff too much into one book.
The story started out pretty good and definitely kept me guessing. But I thought most of the characters were not fleshed out enough and some did 180s without proper explanation.
I liked the basis of the book, with the protagonist being a music blogger and radio show host. And she dislikes the Beatles - another plus.
But the book is overstuffed with MacGuffins to begin with and then it gets to the end - and more and more are added. The ending was just too much, was rushed, and a hint of romance came out of nowhere.
I liked the idea of the book, just not the execution.
I received this book from Harper Collins through Edelweiss in exchange for my unbiased review.
These are the times I wish Goodreads had a rating scale that included .5. I'd give "Body and Bone" a 4.5 no doubt. See, "The Drowning Game" was easily one of the best books I've ever read, so I had really high expectations for "Body and Bone." While a fantastic and captivating read - I can't give it five stars like I did "The Drowning Game."
I love that L.S. Hawker isn't afraid to have plot twists that just seem so incredibly out there. I thought I had this one all figured out early on. I was so far off that it was laughable. Just... read it.
Another superbly suspenseful story from LS Hawker. Body and Bone had an intense storyline -addictions and secrets, betrayals and death, vengeance and redemption. I loved that fast-paced plot, and that Hawker's style suits me so well. I did think the big reveal/baddie was overdone and far-fetched, almost cartoonish, but, the rest of the story was pretty perfect.
I loved her first book but this one is better. Read it in one day and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Always kept me guessing, which is something I love. I never really enjoy a book when you figure out the bad guy too early, didn't have to worry with this one.
Engaging characters, twists and turns, a great read!
Interesting and twisted plot! I enjoyed reading it as well as her other book. Didn't see the ending coming! Couldn't put it down! I definitely recommend it. Look forward to more books by this author.
I have owned this book for several years but for some reason, I never read it. I am glad I finally did as it is a good story. It is full of twists and mystery and kept me guessing right to the end.
I wanted to like this book, and parts of it I did like. Then there were parts I found to be unbelievable. I found the climax to be very farfetched. It was hard to reconcile the two different aspects of Nessa's brother. The cool guy that introduced her to all the alternative music didn't seem like the passive puppet of her mother. Don't get me started on the mother! That whole storyline was hard to swallow.
I did like her roommate and I liked the dialog between her and Nessa. I found that it flowed naturally and her character was well written.
The character development, though it does get better as the book goes along, is not very good. Everything happens really abruptly, without much of a "suspenseful build up". I found myself being like "whaaaaaaat, did that really just happen without any pretense?" so many times throughout this book.
The plot is alright, and I'll admit I didn't expect the ending, but definitely wouldn't read again or really recommend.
I had no great expectations for this book. It was reading material for a long boring flight home after a trip. The narrative slowly seduced me until I was inextricably engaged. A wonderful story, skilfully written and plotted with subtlety and fitness rarely found in contemporary literature.
Great story. Well written and well told. Surprises and twists and turns to keep you off track. Just bought two more of her books to see if she tells all stories so well. I do recommend this book.
I've lost sleep over this book, I just couldn't stop reading! Great storyline, when I thought I had it figured out there was a new twist. I definitely recommend this book and I will be adding more stories by this author.
Nessa made everyone pancakes for breakfast. She promised Daltrey a bacon, egg & Gouda sandwich from Starbucks for breakfast before the 10:00 appointment at the police station…story lost credibility for me after that but I did finish it.

Interesting and suspenseful story about a successful woman with a past. Well told and we'll written. This is the first book I've read by this author. Won't be my last.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It’s suspenseful with a shocking twist at the end. Definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers.
Whoa! Sus-pense-ful! I looked up the definition of suspenseful - causing a feeling of excitement because you are waiting for something to happen or are uncertain about what is going to happen. YEP! That was this book. I felt "excitement because you are waiting for something to happen" the whole last half of the book!
This was a tiny bit slower getting started but VERY quickly turned around. And definitely made up for it the last 2/3 of the book. I think I read the last half in one sitting. I could not stop reading. And to think that something like this - Terrorizing someone via the internet could actually happen (and probably has!) is so scary, the reality of it. It just is unbelievably real.
Great character development. I didn't care for Nessa in the very beginning. I thought she was very odd. But... there was a reason for this oddness, as you soon find out and it is very well done. I did end up warming up to her and actually ended up really liking her and was scared for her. Really scared! I loved Isabeau! She was like this super hero. Who would have thought that this college student/nanny would turn out to be a knife throwing bad-ass! I definitely want her on my side! She was like a ninja wonder woman.
Nessa realized she's never asked Isabeau anything about herself, and it made her ashamed. she was so swept up in the drama that was her life Isabeau was just a bit player, a prop, an extra. But by rescuing Nessa tonight, she'd earned top billing.
This is my second book by this author. I also read - The Drowning Game which was her first novel. See my review for that one - HERE I am definitely hooked! I will want to read everything she writes now! I love it when I find a great new author like this that I can add to my list! ~~~Eagerly awaiting her next book~~~

This is the first thing we know about this book, but trust me it is not enough. This is a very intense book, a real page turner. Deals with cyber-bullying and other topics like drugs abuse, rape, etc.
My only complain? I feel like the ending was too fast built and we missed some character construction, but that’s just me. And I can’t say more…No spoilers!
All the time you are asking “is the husband really dead?” “if so, who did it?” “Could have been Nessa and she’s delusional?” Everyone is a suspect. And you never guess it, there is no clue whatsoever, of what’s coming at the end. And that’s what I think is the key for an excellent reading (in this genre, of course) that it keeps you guessing until the very end.
Well done LS Hawker!
This was my first book from this author but certainly it won’t be the last.
The last 3 books I’ve read have been just meh so I was really craving a good, suspenseful mystery and "Body and Bone" by L.S. Hawker fit the bill to a T! The book focuses on a single mom full of secrets who has a music satellite radio show who is framed for the death of her crack-addicted, estranged husband. This thriller is a fast-paced, tightly-written, well-developed novel with great characters, heart-wrenching secrets, uncomfortable topics, dark secrets, shattered dreams, broken trust, death, family strife, internet trolls, as well as sex, drugs and rock n roll! The music lover in me loved all the references to rock bands. I highly recommend this great read! P.S. Another gem found on BookBub!
Earlier this summer, I read LS Hawker’s debut novel, The Drowning Game and really liked it. The characters were quirky but also had real emotional depth and were easy to like. Although the characters in Body and Bone are genuine and authentic, they’re not so easy to like. As a reader, you want to root for them but they don’t always make it easy. I suspect the author would correctly point out that most people are a complicated mixture of admirable qualities, shameful vices and everything in between. While that may be true, not many possess the extremes that make up Nessa Donati, the main protagonist. What I liked... (full review on the blog: http://www.knockinbooks.com/reviews/b...)
Body and Bone is a wonderful second book by new author L.S Hawker. I was really excited to read it after being surprised by how great her first novel, The Drowning Game, was. Lucky for me I wasn't disappointed by this second book. All in all, Hawker seems to have settled well into her writing style, and for me the novel feels a lot tighter than her first one, although I enjoyed both. At first I was a little thrown off by the town seemingly populated with only oddly-named characters, but I got used to it eventually.
The book is well-paced, and the twists and turns the story takes keep you guessing even when you think you've worked it out. Definitely a great new author to watch.
This was an entertaining thriller. Ness Donati is a successful music blogger and satellite radio show host. She lives with her son and has a nanny called Isabeau (seriously?) She has just thrown her husband out for doing drugs in the family home.
But Nessa has many secrets and is determined to keep them. Things start to unravel, however, when she attracts a cyber-stalker. Someone is trolling the interweb trashing her reputation. Someone who knows her well. The tension is slowly ratcheted up until the inevitable confrontation between Nessa and her stalker. Hmm gets a little far-fetched here.
Still, LS Hawker is developing as a writer and is one to watch.
