Written by three career experts, An Intelligent Career is a playbook for the modern knowledge worker, providing a complete guide that will allow workers to take a composite, dynamic view of a life's work in the 21st century.
"Knowledge work" is fundamental in today's economy. It is the basis for long-term success in the global economy and it drives the collective brainpower through which goods and services are delivered. And today, knowledge work requires much more than a college it means understanding the changing nature of work and employment, and the processes through which knowledge is generated, transferred, and applied. It means understanding new career possibilities, more dynamic work arrangements, and the growing demand for knowledge work around the globe. It means navigating work life with an authenticity that replaces any straightforward loyalty to a single employer, and instead calls for better understanding of the self, collaborators, clients, and customers.
Now in paperback, An Intelligent Career provides clear guidance on how to take charge of your own destiny, seek continuous learning, collaborate with others, recognize and act on fresh opportunities, determine when it is time to move on, and much more.
This is a difficult book to rate - would have been three or four stars.
I honestly couldn't really think about what genre this book fit under. Sure, it seems like a career book, but it wasn't really. It was almost like a general life/career advice book, but having read it I don't know if I actually took anything away from it other than that a career is a very complex beast, and that the approaches to it are very varied.
This book has a lot of good information related to career and life, and has referenced prior studies and management research on the associated topics. However, there was a lack of a core thread to provide any solid guidance on career planning. It tells you a lot of factors which one should consider and leaves it to the reader to digest this information and use it in personal planning.
This book reflects on the way one can evolve in career and internalize professional world's influence into one's own life. Several examples have been shared to suit distinct scenarios with some mindful thoughts. Some of the tips are unconventional and can be taken into account to imbibe & enhance levels of professionalism. Was a good read for me.
This book tends to give pretty standard advice like, "Make sense of where you are," and "Take ownership of your career because your company won't do it for you." For a self-help book, it tends not to be particularly impactful in terms of giving specific guidance on how to frame a career.
