I apparently didn't read the same book as most people who reviewed this story.
Divorced parents in an ugly custody battle. While staying with the father one child is abducted. The story follows what happens to the abducted child and what happens to the father. I liked the first part of the book. I was certain that the father was going to follow the clues, recover his child and show his miserable ex that she was as responsible for what happened as he was. Nope. It is a just a depressing descent into madness. Neither of the parents was likable. The story then devolved into a strange religious "Come to Jesus" rant before winding away again. About halfway through I found myself skimming just so I could avoid making this book a DNF since I had already spent so much time on it. The resolution of the mystery is abrupt and kind of silly.
That was three hours I can't get back.

Băiatul și misterioasa disparițiemi-a plăcut și nu prea. A fost o lectură antrenantă, dar, pe alocuri am simțit că dispariția copilului nu a mai reprezentat punctul culminant al acestui thriller. Ți se spune din primele pagini cine a răpit copilul și care au fost motivele. Singurele semne de întrebare le ridică poziția lui în raport cu ceea ce fusese învățat să fie în noua viață. Pentru el, viața începuse din nou când avea șapte ani.

This is a book that I did not want to put down, but had to because it literally and figuratively hit home. The town of Billerica is real as are all the locations mentioned in the town. All the streets mentioned are part of the development I grew up in. I know all the places named and have been or attend them. Some of the names used are real people/family names from the development and some lived on the streets they were mentioned to have lived on. The warning about fictional places and people and it being coincidence is a misnomer. They may feel like it to the author since he moved away early in life.

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. Even though this book was at times hard to read because you were feeling pained for the characters, I am so glad that I had the opportunity to do so. Having 5 children of my own, I can't even begin to imagine the pain that I would feel if one of mine was kidnapped. I do know that just like the father in this book, I would never give up looking for them. I would recommend this book to everyone. I will certainly look forward to any future books by Russell Newell in the years to come!

I've never read a book about the town I live in. That mentions places that are familiar. That was so cool. The story was very sad but had a good ending with a lot going on in between.

Cartea aceasta este despre un copil răpit din sânul familiei de către o sectă religioasă care timp de 10 ani îi spală creierul până când acesta nu mai dorește să se întoarcă la propria familie, chiar dacă aceștia îi aplică pedepse crunte de fiecare dată când "păcătuiește".
În paralel urmărim cum viața tatălui său este distrusă treptat, acesta ajungând chiar și la închisoare.

🚲 Părerea mea: cartea aceasta avea un mare potențial, doar că a fost lungită prea mult. Uneori a fost repetitivă, întâmplându-se aceleași lucruri mereu; au fost prea multe referințe religioase, întregi paragrafe numai cu citate din Biblie. Totuși am vrut să citesc un thriller, nu Biblia.
Mi-ar fi plăcut să se concentreze mai mult pe pedepsele aplicate de către sectă și mai puțin pe munca lor în comunitate, irelevantă pentru poveste.
🚲 Cu toate acestea, cartea este extraordinar de emoționantă și sfâșietoare pe alocuri, la final am și lăcrimat puțin. În inima mea era de patru steluțe, dar rămân doar trei pentru motivele enumerate mai sus.

Vă mărturisesc încă de la început că dacă vă așteptați de la acest roman la o supradoză de suspans și mister, dezamăgirea voastră o să vă împiedice să percepeți romanul la adevărata sa valoare.
Aflăm încă de la început că Jack a fost răpit și adus într-o comunitate izolată, în care membrii acesteia își dedică viața slăvirii lui Dumnezeu și studierii Bibliei. Trăind după un set de reguli stricte și predefinite, aceștia pedepsesc aspru fiecare abatere de la codurile morale pe care le apără și promovează cu sfințenie.
Din momentul dispariției lui Jack, acțiunea romanului se scindează pe două planuri centrale concentrând, pe de o parte, eforturile disperate ale unui părinte de a-și găsi fiul dispărut și, pe de altă parte, modul de viață la care trebuie să se adapteze copilul în vârstă de 7 ani în comunitatea în care a fost adus. Ambele planuri au ca factor comun sacrificiul, Gus renunțând la serviciul pe care îl iubea și la vechea viață pentru a-și concentra eforturile în direcția găsirii lui Jack. Pe de altă parte, băiatul este obligat să-și uite vechea viață și se străduiește să trăiască după regulile impuse, pentru a scăpa de pedepse și a se integra în comunitatea din care face parte.
Odată cu dispariția lui Jack, viața lui Gus începe să se destrame cu fiecare zi care trece fără să știe orice fărâmă de informație despre fiul său. Acesta se folosește de toate mijloacele pentru a-și găsi băiatul, de la poliție până la un detectiv particular, însă toate se dovedesc zadarnice. După ani de zile de la incident, apropiații lui Gus îl fătuiesc să lase în urmă trecutul și să privească spre viitor, însă problema acestuia este că din punct de vedere psihic a rămas blocat în acea zi, neacceptând faptul că băiatul său a dispărut fără nicio urmă. În tot acest timp, Gus își pătrează vie speranța că într-o zi îl va găsi pe băiat, în viață.

Finished reading this last night. The story was a good story, but there was too much religious talk due to the cult that took Jack (Augustine). At times it got to be a bit much and I felt myself skimming through the words instead of actually reading them. I was so angry at the mother for being that way to a father who just wanted to be there for his kids. I felt heartbreak for him losing everything over his son that he could just not stop looking for. His dedication amazed me. Of course, he made some mistakes...big ones along the way, but I could still relate to him. My kid is my world too. I was happy to see how he found his way back to the positive life and by the end I was in tears.
I would say about 3 1/2 stars for me, but because I can't do half, I had to choose. Next time, a little less details in the speech of the cult and more on the actual story itself. Good book overall.

WOW, I'm super glad I read this story! It was a page turner for sure! I kept hoping that there would be news about Jack so that Gus could recapture his life, but it kept going and going. The ending is def worth the read tho!
Characters (good and bad ones) were so deep that it really helped tell the story along the way. Well done!

I finished this book last night and I really enjoyed it! Read it in two days because I couldn't put it down! I could tell the author did a lot of research on the subject and the reader really was able to feel the main characters pain. Great read!

Great read! Well developed characters and compelling storyline. I felt a genuine interest in how the story would turn out and anxiously looked forward to the twists and turns. Can't wait for the movie!

Crazy book! Made me extremely nervous about where my kids are and who they are talking to. I had to keep reading to find out what happened to Jack. Finished in a day!!!

I did enjoy the love story though not terribly innovative. I am quite put off by all the god-speak. I would not seek out this author to read again.

Personajele care m-au înfuriat de la începutul și pana la sfârșitul cărții au fost: Victoria, mama băiețelului răpit, și Abraham, cel care conducea un cult religios barbaro-creștin, și care de altfel, a fost autorul răpirii lui Jack. Mi-au plăcut: mobilizarea generală a oamenilor obișnuiți, suspansul și povestea de dragoste care s-a înfiripat între Jack căruia bestia de Abraham, i-a schimbat numele in Augustin, și frumoasa Frances. Mi-a plăcut și finalul: tatăl și fiul se întâlnesc la zece ani după răpire. Vă las sa descoperiți singuri, cum s-a întâmplat asta!

Very thin characters, abrupt lines dropped here and there to explain away a missing plot element or gap in time, and way, way too much focus on the cult-religious speak. Just did not enjoy and would not recommend.

A fost o carte destul de ok, dar din păcate, unele capitole au fost mult prea lungite și în plus, consider că finalul trebuia mai detaliat, mi-ar fi plăcut să aflu de reacția mamei și surorii lui+ a bunicilor.

Cu toate că am fost furioasă pe parcursul întregii povestiri din cauza nedreptății ce se face unui copil...cartea m-a ținut în suspans până la ultimul cuvânt al povestirii.
Te zgâlțâie destul de dur de la început până la sfârșit.
