Remy's Dilemma

Rate this book
The world is coming to an end. That's what Remy Delemme believes, anyways. While double-checking his lifelong to-do list to ensure he has led a rich life, he realizes he hasn't come close to completing his goals. Panicked and short on time, Remy embarks on a chaotic road trip to complete the most important item on his bucket list - finding the answer to man's greatest question. There's just one problem. Detective Tobias Gray, the most respected criminal profiler in the Toronto Police Department, thinks Remy is a serial killer; and he's not the only one who has come to that conclusion. Armed with a green crayon, smiley-faced stamp and a pack of cigarettes in a race against time, Remy carves a path of hilarious destruction, baffling and infuriating the police, his government and every other person he encounters.

I love road trip books and this one is unlike anything I have ever read before. I must preface this by saying the following: If you are Canadian or have spent any time up here in the Great White North, you have to read this book! The author created a world in the not-too-distant future that is hilarious and you’ll laugh your butt off.

Remy wakes up to hear the world is ending from none other than the Prime Minister. Before panic sets in, Remy grabs his life goals check-list (wrote it in the 4th grade) and sets out to answer man’s ultimate question. First, he gets a car then he goes on the ultimate Canadian road trip where anything can happen (and does to Remy).

Remy’s Dilemma is filled with Canadian hijinks and the funniest parts are when the police and FBI are on a manhunt to capture a deadly serial killer. Yup, they think it’s Remy. I laughed out loud in several places and sometimes rolled my eyes at Remy’s innocence.

The only part I didn’t like was that it ended abruptly. I know this is a trend in books right now but it’s a pet peeve of mine as a reader. I’m hoping Mr. Snook has a sequel lined up soon.

Humor is tricky in literature but Remy’s Dilemma delivers rib-tickling humor/satire in the same vein as Canadian comic Steve Smith (aka Red Green). Do yourself a favor and pick up this book. You’re in for a fun time.

Favorite Character:

Remy. While he is quite possibly the most obtuse character I have ever encountered, he has an innocence about him that I found endearing. He meets a woman who kicks his ass more than once and in his mind, she’s utterly in love with him. * shakes head *

Favorite Quote:

“Waking up at random hours in a daze has never been a conflict for me since I don’t believe it’s necessary to have steady employment.”

What to do when you're given advanced notice of the end of the world? That, in a nutshell, is Remy's Dilemma. This rip-roaring riot of a novella tells the tale of Remy Delemme, a wandering soul, confused by a world which is equally confused by him. After receiving what he believes to be a premonition concerning the end of the world, he sets off on a journey to check everything off his childhood self's bucket list.

The narrative splits between Remy's 'adventures' and those chasing after him, a top Toronto police profiler and an FBI agent or two. What makes this book truly delightful is the way Remy seems to have little or no idea what he's doing. A path of destruction is left behind him but his intentions are rarely nefarious. He simply plods along his course, figuring any collateral damage isn't a big deal, what with the world coming to an end...

Remy’s Dilemma takes a little getting used to its oddities at the start but it is also these oddities that escalate during the story that makes it a page-turner. Its a fast read. However, its setting might prove to be a little more welcoming to Canadians (particularly living in Ontario and Quebec). However, the geographic story doesn’t quite make that much of a difference here as the characters and scenarios more than makes up for all the entertaining elements. I can’t help to think that Remy’s Dilemma might not be for everyone as it is a rather dark humor sort of story and humor is quite subjective to everyone.

I started reading 'Remy's Dilemma' one day. I got through the first two chapters and thought it was interesting and intriguing. Couple of days after I read some more and was still liking it. When I started reading Chapter 5, I just couldn't put it down. I was captured until the very end.
I loved this book and am happy that I decided to buy it.
Thank you for giving me a new book to add to my collection! And I hope this book gets out there because I believe it is truly a must read! I can't wait to read more!

Whimsical, adventurous and fun. This unique tale will keep you hooked until the end.
The novella is unlike anything else out there, and therein lies the appeal.
Follow Remy on his weird and wonderful adventure through Canada and let the silliness wash over you.
It is a fun, easy and playful read. Think Bukowski, if he wasn't a misogynist, loved kids and was more delightful than misanthrope.
Great book to read to kids and great book for adults who don't take themselves seriously.

An enjoyable flight of bizarre whimsy. Reads like if you took Vonnegut, along with dashes of Woody Allen's early work and just a pinch of Hunter S. Thompson for spice and tossed them in to a Canadian made blender (do they manufacture blenders in Canada? memo to self:do an ounce of research before writing the next review) All in all a fun little ride.

Set in a familiar yet just strange enough version of Canada, Remy’s Dilemma follows the titular character in a series of adventures on a wild road trip. Remy’s absolute cluelessness leads to ridiculous situations and Snook’s take on various institutions is hilarious.

Fantastic book! I found myself laughing out loud on multiple occasions! Reminds me of a cross between Christopher Moore and Douglas Adams. Highly recommend to anyone who wants a fun read.

*Spoilers*
This was a fun cartoonish story, but i found the ending "revelations" to be confusing. Why was Monica beaten up? Why did Remy hear the PM's speech prior to these events that seemingly was an auditory hallucination only to have the detective hear the exact speech 30 days later? Am I missing something?

With an open mind and good sense of humour, Remy's Dilemma is a wild ride that keeps you guessing (and giggling). It was an extra treat to live in the area it is set in and have driven through many of the places mentioned.

Remy's dilemma is an awesome read. Super light-hearted and entertaining with a kick of irreverence and a touch of inappropriateness. Very fun reading that leaves you wanting more.

I quite enjoyed this book, some great Canadiana twists and turns with lots of laughs! I met Andrew at Chapters where he took the time to present his books which impressed me. I should have bought both books as the first one was great, 2nd on order, looking forward to it and the 3rd when it is ready!

This book was chaos incarnate.

It kinda feels like a hyped up frat boy wrote it, but that was what made it funny!

It ended at such an inopportune time too! Now I need to know what happens next!
