Amanda Forester holds a PhD in clinical psychology and a Masters degree in theology. As a psychologist, she has worked as a clinical researcher and a university instructor (what they call you when they don’t want to give you tenure). None of which has anything to do with writing romance novels. After trying for many years to stop the internal storylines floating around her head, she finally gave up and wrote one down. Now when she is caught daydreaming and talking to herself she can just say, “I’m plotting a scene for my next novel,” which sounds so much better than, “I’m hallucinating and responding to internal stimuli.”

Amanda lives in the Pacific Northwest with her officer and a gentleman husband and their two remarkably active, naturally brilliant children. They share their home with two fiendishly destructive cats and one lazy dog.

The Highlander’s Series represents Amanda's first venture into writing historical fiction, so she would greatly enjoy hearing from readers.

'My Highland Rebel' by Amanda Forester is book Two in the "Highland Trouble" series. This is the story of Cormac Maclean and Jyne Cambell. This can be a standalone book if wish to do so. This book along with 'If the Earl Only Knew' are my two favorite books out of Ms. Forester collections. Ms. Forester has some really enjoyable reads but those two are my favorite. I actually selfishly saved this one for my birthday. I had so enjoyed "If the Earl Only Knew" that this book was a treat for me and I just wanted to savor it. This book did not disappoint even with my buildup of expectation.
Cormac was left with monks after being abandoned by his father when he was little. Now his father, Red Rex who is a notorious war lord has decided that Cormac with become his heir. Red Rex has set out to mold his son into a version of him. But Cormac likes to read and has no desire to fight or be evil like his father. But Cormac has spun some lies to protect a Monk that his father had wanted him to kill. The Monk had been caught chasing after Cormac after he stole some scrolls. The lies to save the Monk has set him on a path to find this treasure..which takes me to Jyne's Abbey. Jyne and Cormac met one morning when Jyne fell into a smelly bog and heyne happened upon her. There Cormac saved her but shortly after her brother came for her and his Monk was hot on his trail for taking the scroll. But with Cormac new lies has taken him to meeting Jyne again. Jyne has just arrived at the Abbey which is to be her dowry. There she finds some squatters who are elderly and young folk abandoned by their own people who have set up home in her keep. Jyne being the kindhearted person she is has them swear their loyalty to her and the Campbell clan. Cormac domes a helmet and becomes the "Fire Lord" to take over the keep. But when he finally meets Jyne again he starts to try to be two people. He tries to be Cormac the man that saved her and the one that will help her now, along with be the "Fire Lord" to take over the keep. He keeps this up by leaving his mask on when he is the "Fire Lord". This actually puts a funny spin on this story. I just loved Cormac and how he was around Jyne. Jyne who was the 'runt' of a large family and always protected was able to become strong and grow.

This was my second book by this author, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. It was a different narrator, but she was still good.

Amanda Forester has the ability to take a very unlikely story and make me fully immersed and believe in it. I both laughed out loud and cried. This is a story about true love, moral character, and Redemption. I definitely plan to read more by this author soon.

A sympathetic hero can make all the difference in a book. For instance, my absolute least favorite trope in romance is The Big Secret. And that is the underlying thread in this book. However, I found I enjoyed the story anyway because it had a hero I could not help but to root for. So kudos to Amanda Forester for that.

Cormac is the son of the most fierce and vicious warlord in the Highlands. He wasn’t raised by his father. He was actually brought up by monks. He loves to read. He wants to be a scribe. But his father has other ideas. Red Rex wants to toughen him up, to remake him in his image. And it doesn’t matter that Cormac dreams of something different. It is conform or die.

Our heroine is Jyne. I have to say that the spelling of her name threw me and reading it constantly felt like I was seeing a typo, but I digress. Anyway, Jyne is the so-called runt of her family. Her brother is the laird of the Cambell clan. She grew up in a castle and because she was a sickly child, she has never had the opportunity to have an adventure. Until now.

Jyne is going to the keep that her brother has prepared as her dower land. On the way, she falls into a bog and needs rescuing. Cormac is the man on hand. She doesn’t know it, but he is on the run from a monk who is chasing him for stealing scrolls from a monastery. He has to read in secret because his father basically thinks reading is for sissies. Anyway the whole theft of the scrolls causes major trouble for Cormac with his dad. It gets even worse when the pursuing the monk stumbles into the camp after him and Cormac has to make up a giant lie to save the monk’s life and keep his father from burning down the monastery. He says the scrolls were not just for reading; they were actually treasure maps and he was trying to get the treasure for his father.

Of course, there is no treasure, but Cormac has to keep up with the lie in order to save everyone that he put in danger. The location of the imaginary treasure just happens to be Jyne’s new keep. So they meet again. Actually they meet a couple of times. First she sees him in a helmet that covers his face as the warlord who is taking over her land. Then she sees him as Cormac, the friendly helpful man who is going to protect her from said warlord. Obviously, it gets a little complicated because Cormac is playing two parts in the story. And the whole time you are waiting for her to figure out his whopper of a lie.

The thing is, I wanted poor Cormac to get away with it all. He didn’t have very many options and his heart was good, even if he made some ill advised choices. Jyne was a pretty standard virginal heroine. At least she wasn’t stupid. She, at worst, may have been a bit naïve, but I liked her OK.

This is a gentle romance. It is essentially a few kisses and a little bit of sensual touching. In fact, it took a while to get past kisses on the cheek here. But it’s sweet.

The book is not full of twists and turns necessarily, but I did find myself interested in seeing how Cormac was going to get out of the mess that he made. And he entertained me every time he took on the mantle of the fire lord.

There were some rather convenient developments, but overall I enjoyed the story fairly well. It moved quickly and it gave me an ending that satisfied.

My Highland Rebel. Okay so Cormac's daddy is basically the devil and terrorizes the lands and wants Core to follow in his footsteps which is so not Core's plan. But he flubs up and finds himself needing to outwit his dad and save a pretty girl, her people, a herd of monks and a stash of books--without her realizing who he really is.

I struggled a bit with this one. But it wasn't totally the book's fault. I'd confused this with book 2 of the series I read of hers and spent like 40% of the book confused as all hell how it could be the follow up to the one I read. *hangs head* So I put it aside back in Jan to try again another day. And that brought us to May.

There's drama and deception and struggle between good and evil as Core tries to save everyone and falls for Jyne. I liked them both overall and their desire to do what they want not what their families expect-- Core wanting to be a scholar not a warlord and Jyne wanting some adventure instead of being overly protected by her large family.

In the end, though, we just never got on the right foot. I didn't hate it. There was nothing really wrong with it-- other than not thinking the heroine was all that bright for not being able to figure out who Core was when in disguise-- a helmet, basically-- but overall it was an okay read with a nice ending.

The best thing about reading an Amanda Forester story is the way she can transport one to the place of long ago land and plant you right in the middle of her tale. She has a knack of mixing historical facts with fiction that is so seamless and authentic, you’ll be able to see and feel the world she takes you into.

Our couple, Jyne and Cormac, are so well written that I yearned for their friendship! They were that likable and real. Everything in this story just clicked to perfection, from plot to pace; from characterization to the sweet romance.

This tale is timeless and no matter if you’re a into Highlander tales or not, I have no doubt you’ll love this witty, sweet and tender romance.

I always enjoy a good forbidden romance story especially when there’s a hint of deception. The deception in this one, however, didn’t quite sit well with me. It was less romantic and more manipulative. Jyne was a bit naive and a lot stupid so I couldn’t help but feel violated on her behalf. Core on the other hand was just taking advantage of and exploiting her. This was not romantic but upsetting.

The plot was interesting and there were some funny bits but the story had me bored to tears. I really wanted to know how it ended so I trudged on…As expected nothing improved, rather they just got worse and I realized a little too late that I wasted about 6 hours of my life.

The *only* redeeming thing about this book is Core, who truly turns himself around and decides to make good, smart choices. But omg I did not like this book. Slow, plodding, full of deception... The MCs were bland and had very little chemistry. The secondary characters were non existent and while we all saw the romance between Luke and Breanna the fact that they got married at the end was ridiculous. Truly, idk that I like Forester's writing at all.

Cormac Maclean has been the subject of his father’s disapproval his whole life. His father gives himself one last time to prove that he can be a ruthless warlord. Core invents a story about an abbey that holds treasure. His father sends him to retrieve the treasure. Core is determined to get this right so when he arrives at the abbey, he has to find something there to bring back to his father.

Jyne’s family allows her to go visit the abbey. She is excited to finally be on her own. She has never been on an adventure this big and she loves it. The abbey is invaded by a handsome that saves her life and Jyne’s big adventure turns into so much more.

Core didn’t expect to find Jyne at the abbey. He wants to protect the sweet woman that he has grown affections for. She doesn’t know that he is the son of Red Rex. He is struggling between keeping his secret, protecting Jyne and the abbey and proving himself to his father.

I liked the story. Jyne and Cormac are both enjoyable characters that eventually grow by the end of the book. I’m not really sure if I buy the looking for the fake storyline of looking for a treasure but it helped put the two leads in the same place.

Cormac is playing dual roles as the enemy and the man she is falling in love with. It is a hard juggling act and I wondered how it will all end. Will Jyne be furious at him for misleading her? A little more than halfway through the book, the story and how it will unfold is predictable but doesn’t take away from it being enjoyable.

The secondary characters and their side romance are a bonus to the story. This is the second book in the series and while I didn’t read the first book, I was not lost in the story and what transpired. I look forward to going back and reading the first book.

Cormac was a man seeking knowledge and not like his father who is feared only by his people that he rules with an iron hand. No matter how hard Cormac tried, he is and would never be the son that his father wanted him to be. So, to outsmart his father he chose to take over what he presumed was a dilapidated Abbey.

These two characters had so much in common I think that is the reason these two was certainly mint for each other. Whereas, Cormac had to prove that even though he seeks knowledge that he was capable of defending himself and others. Jyne had to prove that she had the ability to be strong like her other siblings. But together they went on to prove that presumption of others could and would always lead man to their downfall.

My Highland Rebel could be read as a stand-alone, it had a steady pace and well-developed and likable characters. This is one title that all lover of Scottish romance will certainly enjoy.

Core obviously wants to make sure he lives up to his lady's satisfaction, "sitting on his lap, she felt his affection rise. Finally, she was able to get a good look. “Do I pass inspection?” he asked, noting her interest." I liked this book, lots of tension between Core and Jyne but damn if the man didn't love satisfying his woman, “Wlwell, now.” His dark green eyes glinted with pride. “I am glad to have pleased ye.”

DNF 62% - I've been struggling to get back into reading this one, but I think it's a lost cause for now. It's not a bad book at all and I've really been enjoying Amanda Forester's writing. I guess my main issue is the romance but it's mostly just me being annoying/super picky about it.

Cormac MacLean is the son of a warlord. He is a gentle soul who wants to read from scrolls but is forced to prove himself a warlord’s son. This gets him into trouble as we follow him in his many adventures. Jyne Cambell has had a very sheltered life and longs to spread her wings and have freedom. She takes charge of some elderly people and young children who occupy an abbey that she inherits. Unfortunately, or fortunately, her adventures become entangled in Cormac’s. As long as you’re not looking for much depth, this is a quick read.

[Intense giggles]

Still so much fun. Not as strong as the first book, but still highly enjoyable. My Highland Rebel tells the story of Jyne, the youngest in the huge Campbell clan, and Cormac, a rebellious highlander who is searching for knowledge. There are a few cameo’s from the previous novel, most notably the villainous Red Rex, who causes just as much trouble for Jyne and Cormac as he did with our previous characters.

Our leads are immediately smitten, and it’s a softer relationship than the previous story. Cormac is scholarly and bookish and Jyne is plucky and adventurous.

I really enjoyed this historical romance. I received this book for free and I voluntarily chose to review it. I've given it a 5 * rating. This book pulled me in from the beginning. The hero was one really busy guy.The heroine was pretty active too. Id say there was a lot going on in this story. I enjoyed them both but with reservations. Not for the under 18 readers mostly because of the violence. What a big adventure this story was.

Page turner for sure...

What an awesome story! Lady Jyne and Core are put through numerous trials and tribulations as the story unfolds. Core, the son of a notorious warlord father fails to see a path different from his father yet in truth he is nothing like him.

Highly recommend it’s a fantastic read with great characters and vivid descriptions that transport the reader to another time and place.

Good Story, But Not as Engaging as Others by This Author

This story was well-written with good characters and elements. However, I couldn't quite get into it. I think some things in the plot were a bit too far-fetched to be humorous, and maybe the overall theme just didn't appeal to me. This book is still worth reading.

I have not laughed so much in such a long time. Really loved the charactor of Cormac if ever there was anyone stuck between a rock and a hard place it was definatly him. The things he did to try and be two people was hillarious. Kept wondering how it would all resolve itself.

This is the second book by Amand Forster I have read and I am loving her stories.

Awful narrator. All the characters sound the same. No difference in cadence or tone. She goes up in her inflection constantly and doesn't perform anything with differing sentiments. The writing is excessively repetitive. Not worth the read and absolutely not worth the listen. Skip and save yourself.

Amanda Forester again whips up a fun, sexy, adventure and makes it look effortless. Danger, humor, and powerful chemistry are grounded in fascinating history in her newest book, My Highland Rebel. Comedy, love, and a gratifying happily-ever-after ending are classic elements of this light, fun, steamy romance.
Lady Jyne Campbell gets more than she bargained for when she wishes for an adventure. Considered the runt of the litter of her 14 siblings, because of her small and delicate nature, she’s never been given the same freedoms as her siblings. Never been chosen to travel or have adventures. So she’s excited when given the chance to visit her dower lands of Kinnoch Abbey. Jyne fell in love with the abbey and the band of people she found living there. Tired of being the dutiful younger sister, she reveled in the fact that at Kinnoch Abbey she was more than just the little sister of the laird. She was needed at the abbey. This was the first time she had control to manage a household. The first time people looked at her to make decisions. She felt like she’d come home and that thrilled her. But that thrill quickly changed to alarm when the abbey was besieged by a fearsome group of highlanders led by a man calling himself The Fire Lord.
Cormac MacLean had been raised in a monastery until it was discovered who his father was and he’d been cast out. Core was the only heir of Red Rex, a monster of a man feared by all who knew him. Red Rex was determined to turn Core into a warlord just like him or kill him in the process. Cormac adored books. They’d always been there for him, giving him adventures when he was young and alone, opening his mind to new ideas and perspectives, and providing him clues to unlock the mysteries of his most recent interest, alchemy. But Red Rex hated book learning and, angered by Core’s resistance to his future as warlord, threatened to burn down the monastery and all the books if Core didn’t prove himself worthy. Eager to save the monastery and books, Cormac uses his quick wit to create a story about an abandoned abbey with a hidden treasure. So Red Rex sends Core to retrieve the treasure, and to ensure Core doesn’t decide to run off, he also sends twenty or more of his men.
Core is surprised to find the abbey inhabited but knows he has to carry out his ruse of the hidden treasure to appease his father and his men. Surely there was something of worth there. So, donning his horned helmet, he takes over the abbey and is quickly taken with Jyne, a girl he’d met briefly just days before. Jyne knows nothing of his ties to the infamous warlord Red Rex. She only knows him as a kind, chivalrous man who rescued her from a sinking bog. And so Cormac finds himself in another predicament. He not only has to come up with a treasure to keep his father happy, but now he has to act the fierce leader to his men while protecting Jyne and the people of the abbey. So Cormac assumes two roles, only appearing in his helmet when in his men’s presence, but appearing as the helpful Cormac when alone with Jyne. Jyne believes Cormac is there to help her rid the abbey of the fire lord and his men. He could never let Jyne know his real identity. In exchange for a kiss, Cormac is more than happy to help Jyne. But each kiss leaves the two hungry for more. When they kissed, “their bodies melted into each other and their kiss burned like sweet fire”. With Cormac, Jyne knew the thrill of desire of a man. He made her knees weak and her heart pound. And Cormac was affected by Jyne as well. No one had ever kissed him like that before. She treated him with more kindness than his father ever had. As the two worked together to rid the abbey of its intruders, their feelings for one another continued to grow. Jyne wanted the fire lord and his brigand gone, but she wasn’t ready for the adventure to end. As long as they fought against the fire lord, she and Cormac were together. Cormac was equally torn. He knew once Jyne’s brothers arrived to save her, he’d have to leave. Jyne had feelings for Cormac, not the fire lord. She was a lady. He was the son of a warlord. If she knew who he really was, she’d despise him. Can these two star crossed lovers defy the obstacles before them and find happiness?
There’s something about Amanda Forester’s books that bring a smile to my face and a lightness to my heart. They just make me feel good. The characters of Jyne and Cormac are so well rounded and loveable, and the plot is sure to bring a chuckle or two. The story moves at a lively pace, and is driven by witty characters, genuine emotion, and entertaining repartee. Though the second in her Highland Trouble series, it can easily be read as a stand alone. Don’t start this story at night though, as it can be highly addictive! . I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
