Well, this was a bit of a disappointment. This was a book that I had been looking for to read for some time, and I was super excited to finally read it when it got delivered. Sadly, it was apparently not meant to be. There were funny parts, but sadly also enough stuff that wasn't good.
The book started off pretty fun and I liked Katie. She seemed a fun, interesting, down-to-earth girl who likes to make music, write lyrics, have fun with her best friend Lacey, and she was so normal. Not like a lot of main characters who are just perfect in each way. Oh no. Katie is all normal, 100% teenager. I loved the descriptions of her room (OMG that pizza, and how that just continued to come back throughout the story), I loved how everything seemed to spiral out of control and how Katie handled that. Poor phone though, no one deserves that.
I loved how she tried to make her life as good as it could, even if that meant navigating weird girls (Jaz, Nicole), popular girls (Savannah, Paige, that other girl), a father who apparently has moved to California and doesn't seem to listen to his daughter that much (though is still proud when certain events happen). Even if that meant living in a home without broadband (the HORROR :P).
I also loved the typical thing teenagers do when their parents kiss/hug (though I loved the reaction of the mom to that), or when parents say certain words they apparently shouldn't say (though I don't see why not, but maybe that is just my age).
But after that video, after what happened to Katie, I started to dislike her. Gone was the down-to-earth girl that I liked, instead I found myself stuck with a brat who apparently thought she was just fucking perfect and wonderful. :|

I hated what she did to Adrian, though then again, I didn't like Adrian, but I even thought this was just a new low point for anyone.
I never trusted Tony. I won't say much more than that, but I just knew something was off.
When Adrian came into the picture, I wondered about the mom's parenting skills. Great that you have found a new boyfriend (and you are happy with him), nice that you apparently never cared to tell your kids (or at least one of them), fun that you apparently think it is just a great and marvellous fucking idea to just move in with him in a new house.... I mean seriously, you just know him, your kids barely do, and you are just going to move in together? Like what? How in hell did you think that was a good idea? And then you didn't even check the house. Sorry, instead of laughing my butt off at the whole wreck of an house, I was just shaking my head at the poor skills of that mother. :| And then all the time that Katie wanted to talk, the mom just dismissed her. And sure, Katie was a bit insufferable, but I think it is pretty sad that it took until the end for the mom to finally realize how Katie felt. Bah.
I also have to say that I never liked Lacey. Not when she first came into the spotlight, not at the end. I found her a bit too much. And a hypocrite. Oh no, I don't want that video up, but I do want to be in your single/video when you make it professionally? What?
Jaz was a real surprise. She was a bit hit/miss, at times I found her a bit too much over the top, but in general I saw a nice girl who just wanted to be friends.
The ending was really sweet, and I was glad to see Katie like this again.
All in all though, this book was hit/miss, and I am not entirely sure I will be reading the next one. Maybe with the ending as it is, I will like Katie again, but I am not sure.

Do you ever get that feeling where you read a book SO GOOD you need the sequel immediately? LIKE YESTERDAY? And then you realise the sequel is at least a year away? Well, that. I am feeling that horrific anger where I want the sequel to Accidental Superstar right now, even if that means reading as Marianne writes it. Because Accidental Superstar was amazing. Absolutely knock-me-down amazing. I read all kinds of books but my favourites are the light reads that I can just lose myself in, without worrying about feeling any emotion other than happiness. The Geek Girl series does that perfectly for me, because you always know Harriet Manners will win out in the end, and I felt that with Accidental Superstar. It made me happy.
At heart I reckon I am still thirteen-years-old. Not twenty-five. Thirteen. Because books like Accidental Superstar make me miss school, and that amazing kind of hope you have at thirteen that everything will pan out exactly how you want it, and that's what it's like for Katie (although let it be said, I don't actually know how old Katie is). Katie's life actually kind of sucks, since her mum and dad broke up, they're living in a dump, her mum has a new boyfriend and to top it all off they're moving to a new house that resembles something out of The Money Pit, but when a video of Katie and her friends (and Adrian) jamming goes up online and goes viral, it looks like Katie's life is looking up - a music deal, a concert, a single, all that good stuff and I so bad wanted it to work out, but I've read books like this before and you just know there's a sting in the tail somewhere, but I loved Katie regardless.
Katie is the kind of girl I could have done with knowing at thirteen, that many girls could do with knowing. Maybe she's not always a good friend, but you do know that in the end she'll do the right thing, and hello? Who doesn't want to be a famous musician? Accidental Superstar is like the best roller-coaster you can ever go on, with ups and downs, but it made my heart sing (not literally, singing is not nor will ever be something I excel at) and it made me happy and do you know what? I didn't even notice there was no romance! There is no romance in this book, and I didn't even notice it was missing the book was that good. To be fair there was so much going on, it didn't really need it.
I loved this book. I loved Katie. I loved Mad Jaz. I loved the plot. I loved the writing. It was such a pure pleasure to read this book and I devoured it, like I would die if I didn't get to the end and see what happened. And the ending was sooooooooooooooo good. So satisfying, and left for book two nicely, but without an awkward cliff-hanger. I really, really enjoyed this book. I need Accidental Superstar: In Concert in my hands like as soon as it's released and it kills me I have to wait, but I will and it will so be worth it.

5/10, where do I begin with this one, for starters this is another rise and fall book with a few bits of uniqueness here and there but other than that this is the same tired and rehashed book formula I've read so many times and I'm beginning to get sick of it. It begins with the main character Katie Cox posting a video and it got instantly viral and wow where have I seen this one before, anyways riding on her fame she goes to a recording studio and splurges on some dresses also and did I mention that she's just another typical annoying female protagonist. Katie is just another one of those people who likes to shout at people like a spoiled immature brat when things don't go her way but how old is she, 16 and other than a figurative slap on the wrist she gets away with it I guess however I really disliked that aspect of the book. Towards the second half of the book she rejects her deal with Top Records just because she had too many things going on like school or she might be waiting until she turns 18 and strikes a deal with them I don't really know but at least she experienced character development since she doesn't annoy people anymore towards the final part of the book and apparently there's a second book in the series that I might read to see if it's better than the first one but I doubt that my library would get it considering that this book is 7 years old now. If you like rise and fall stories read this one however there are better ones to read than this like My Heart and Other Breakables by Alex Barclay.

Positives:
- The prologue was short and sweet but straightaway got my attention. I feel like so many young adults would be able to relate to what the main character was saying about the background.
- People's reaction to the video was really believable as no one wants to stand out for the wrong reasons in school. They jump on whoever is being made fun of so as to not be that person themselves.
- It was so realistic and typical that the head teacher was trying to get the school to benefit from Katie's new found fame and make it look like they had played a part in it.
- I liked how both parents reacted differently to Katie's music single recording idea and it was interesting to see both points of view.
Negatives:
- The house move did seem fast to me to the point that I couldn't keep up with what was happening when I was reading that section.
- Lacey came across as highly strung at times and as though she took herself too seriously.
- Katie and Lacey's friendship didn't make sense to me. The two girls weren't particularly loyal to each other to the point that Lacey seemed to take pleasure in Katie feeling uncomfortable.

Maybe I'm getting old, but most of this book had me going "You had ONE JOB KATIE." Seriously, most of this book was a normal teenager going through extraordinary circumstances. The rest of it was the same teenager making incredibly basic mistakes that make you want to shake her.
Maybe I should be saying "omg she's so real, so flawed. I love her." But I don't. You know who I love? Her sister Amanda, who does so much to try to make things easier for both her mom and her sister, and gets like Zero credit. Jaz was alright, but she seemed like a bit of a plot device, not so much a character in her own right.
Really, if you were a teenager who was suddenly offered a record contract while your life was falling apart and it felt like the only real thing in the world, you'd go for it. But if you're given ONE RULE about getting the contract and you go home and break that ONE RULE, what do you expect will happen?
This book had me feeling meh. There are better ones, there are worse ones. If it's ever in flash sale and you can get it for free or for like 30 cents or something, go for it.

Katie Cox is going through some changes in her life - her parents getting divorced, moving, her mom dating someone new. Amidst all of this, she is an aspiring singer, songwriter. One afternoon her friends and her moms boyfriend are playing around and record a song. They post it online and it goes viral. What ensues is a series of events that take you from viral video to pop star.
I can definitely see where this would be appealing for middle grade girls. It has a home in the middle grade book world - for sure. That home, however, is not with me. I liked the concept and the writing was well done. But I didn't like the characters. I found Katie to be downright self-centered and rude but then again found her mom to be that way as well. The redeeming character was Jaz. Her I loved and loved what she stood for. Again, I think this was a realistic, well done portrayal and kids will like it. Just wasn't for me.

Pleasant surprise of a book! Well written and readable, portraits relationships between family members and teenagers in a very authentic way, yet it's still fun and not heavy-handed. Katie's instant fame goes into her head and although she's not overly cocky you know that fall is about to happen. Fortunately everything plays out just fine and not too painfull in the end. All the characters in the book are interesting to observe and I loved that some of the lyrics that Katie writes were included at the ends of chapters.

I absolutely loved this book !!!! And although I have read other people's reviews which have said that they were disappointed with how Katie acted when she was "famous" I completely disagree !!! Even though at some points it was a bit frustrating about how she acted towards other people I thought it added to the story. I will definitely be reading the second one.

Though entertaining, Katie Cox Goes Viral is nothing special. It's a cute book that has a timely focus for today's middle-grade readers. I'm sure 10-13 year olds will love the music focused content and the way Katie navigates the challenges in her life. I have always wanted to read a book about a tween or a teen going viral. It's always interested me to see how it happens, so when I found out about this book, I just knew that I would love it!
And love it I did! I could not put it down. It was even better than I was expecting it to be, especially considering that it's a middle grade book. It was soooo adorable and fluffy, I just can't...
For a synopsis, this book centres around Katie, a middle schooler, who really enjoys writing songs. Her family is full of avid musicians- and since her parents have just gotten divorced, she has been writing a ton of songs to vent out her emotions. When her friends pressure her to sing one of the songs she's written, she is hesitant, but she does... and ends up becoming a viral singing sensation!
Katie was such a cute and awesome character. She developed a lot during the story, that's for sure! Reading the book, I could tell that she had a passion, and that it was totally shining through. Even though she was a bit shy at first, I feel like she definitely broke out of her shell by the end of the story. She went from an unsure songwriter all the way to a viral sensation in a matter of seconds, which is freaking amazing!! Katie was also a sweet and loyal friend, which I really admire.
Katie's friends were so fun and spontaneous! Yes, there was quite a bit of drama going on, but what friends don't experience that? They were super supportive and totally had her back. Seriously, they are SQUAD GOALS.
I loved the fact that this book had zilch romance in it. Almost all of the books I've been reading lately have a ton of romance included in the plot, so I felt like this book was an awesome break from it. Guys, I know that you know how much I love romance books, but sometimes I just need a break from all that love! (And for the record, this was the perfect one <3)
Aside from the fact that there's no romance, I also really liked the family aspect in this book. Despite the 'broken up families' trope, I felt like it was done really well and that it was pretty realistic. It gets two thumbs up from me :)
Overall, this was just an adorable, make-me-happy read, with relatable characters and great morals. I'd honestly recommend it to anyone, especially those looking for a cute story focusing less on the romance and more on the family and friendship ties. I know that fans of middle-grade and probably even young adult will DEVOUR this book! When the clock strikes 2017... get your wallets ready!

Oh, gosh, I loved this book. The language was so cleaver, but natural at the same time, as shown below:
The story is normal enough. Katie writes songs, the way some people draw, or write fan fic, because that is what she enjoys doing, and she keeps a lyric book, where she writes everything down. Her mother has recently divorced, and has started seeing someone, Adrian, she met in the local pub during karaoke night. Shortly, thereafter, they move to a new house, so they can all live together, and Katie has to take the local bus, to get to school, and who should be on that same bus but Mad Jaz, who she and her best friend, Lacey, make fun of, in the past.
And that is how Katie, Mad Jaz, Lacey, Adrian and Amanda, her sister, all end up in Katie's bedroom one night when Katie performs her latest song, and Mad Jaz films it and puts it up on the internet, where Katie, as the book title says, goes viral.
And if you think this is a rags to riches story, well, no, there is much much more here. There is dealing with Mad Jaz, the anarchist, with Savannah, the local rich girl, with Adrian, with well life, and all that.
It is her observations about life that make the book so much fun. Here is another one about her principal:

The whole book is a wild ride, and I think this will appeal to everyone, adults and kids. It is somewhere between a middle school book and a YA. But whatever it is, it is fun.

This is a great young adult novel. Katie Cox feels that her life is changing - her parents got divorced, her dad moved to America, her mom has started dating someone new and now they all live together, along with her sister. Even her best friend feels to be slipping away. Imagine the excitement when a video of her singing in her bedroom goes viral one day. Everyone in town is talking about it, and eyes all over the world have seen it. A London record company comes calling, and Katie's whole world is about to change!
I thought this was a great story that felt very realistic. In this day and age, where the weirdest things can become viral hits one day and misses the next (remember that Friday song?!) this is a story that not only shows how one family can be affected by viral superstardom, but also how those around Katie react as well.
This is one I can recommend to all young adult fans.

Her mum and dad are divorced and he now lives in California. Her mum has a new man and they’ve moved into a dilapidated house of horrors (complete with mice, spiders and leaking roof) out of town. Katie feels very much a passenger in her life. One night everything changes when one of her mates puts a video of her singing online. Overnight she’s famous with a recording contract on offer but life is never straightforward. A wonderful and entertaining tale about finding out what is really important in life.

This book was really enjoyable and not at all what I was expecting. I first thought that this book would be like any other book like this but it wasn’t and I really recommend it!
