The definitive systematic theology for orthodox Lutherans. Clearly those outside orthodox, confessional Lutheranism will consider studying Pieper a waste of time. They disagree with him, just as Lutherans would disagree with systematics texts for Baptists or Catholics. If you are a Lutheran, or are interested in learning about Lutheran systematic theology, these are the books for you, despite what some negative reviewers may say.
It took a looooong time to plow through this beast. Many theologians CLAIM to be Christ-centered and cross-centered. To know nothing but Christ and Him crucified. Pieper ACTUALLY does that. Every page, every theological category, no matter what, Pieper is always seeing it through, relating it to, returning to the vicarious satisfaction. This entire 3 Vol systematic is a synthetic binding of the core and the body of theology just as blood pumps through all body parts. This is by far the best systematic theology regardless of tradition. I know this because justification by faith transcends theological tradition and in these 3 volumes justification appears on every page
Not worth the time reading... here and elsewhere in Pieper expounds his defense of a Lutheran theology... Amongst other thing, three of his greatest weaknesses are his approach to the Trinity (too Western)... His Anthropology/Christology, his method is backward... AND his strict distinction between law and gospel is SILLY. Not worth the time, effort or space on one's shelf... Save your money, look elsewhere, leave the space on your shelf for something with fewer faults and fewer axes to grind.
